Vertebrae ICC School of Arch. // East Peoria, IL a beacon for a studio

Design an entrance to the Architecture Dept. in Dirksen Hall at ICC constructed of only 2x4’s 8’ long or shorter that will attract more attention to the ICC Architecture Dept. Since the sequence in arriving to Dirksen hall is so unique and it is the entrance to the Architecture Dept., Vertebrae is based around the sequence and attracting people to the Architecture Dept. It takes the form of a creature to represent the lively nature of the Architecture Department. There are two separate forms to draw people in from the most commonly used road by people attending or visiting ICC.

VISUAL STIMULATION

The lake structure is seen sitting out in the clearing on the lake shore. This Sparks one’s curiosity and gets them interested in whatever is over at Dirksen Hall, bringing more attention to the Arch. Department.

01

MAIN STRUCTURE

While viewing the lake structure, the main entrance is seen behind it and is framed by the trees. From this distance, the sculpture is merely a shell. This wooden mass serves as a goal for the sequence.

02

DECISION MAKING

The structure is to the left and the intersection is just ahead. This can force someone into the impulse of seeing the sculpture. The entrance is now visible and inviting.

03

ANTICIPATED STRUCTURE

The structure is hidden behind Dirksen Hall, building anticipation which will be met once one turns the corner.

04

HUMAN SCALE

05

The juxtaposition of the undulating form and the strong perspective of the datum invites te user to the stucture. The dome facing the main sidewalk compresses and leads one into the Architecture Department. The tectonic pattern of the 2x4s above provide a flickering light when engaging one’s self in the details of the construction.

Cat Haus Private Residence // Pekin, IL shelter as necessity

This is a home that improves the lives of my cats that live outdoors on my parent’s property. There is a large coyote population on their property and the surrounding properties so there is a need for a safe refuge for the cats. Additionally, the Central Illinois winters can be harsh and unpredicatable. I had already lost a 2 cats to the coyotes when I read the book, Design Like You Give a Damn which inspired me to do something about it. This book’s explaination about how design can positively affect people’s lives forced me to consider what it can do for other animals. This is an exploration of what can be done with nominal lumber, balance and cantilevers. The Cat Haus has a low impact on its surroundings. The only anchor in the ground is a single 10’ 4x4, but provides ample space for the cats.

11

The “Kit of Parts construction of this structure allowed me to build it in a relatively short amount of time and helped create a fecund design process that gives the structure flexibility to change over time.

Meditation Pavilion ICC Bluffs // East Peoria, IL

a tectonic pavilion for contemplation Design a pavilion for the students and faculty of Illinois Central College. The pavilion had to express a distinction between public and private realms as well as include at least three different experiences. It must also be made of primarily pre-fabricated elements. This project was also meant to be a lesson and an excercise in human scale, spacial heirarchy, tectonics, proportion, and sequence. This pavilion doubles as a structure for meditation. Located on the brow of one of the hills in the wooded bluffs behind the campus, it is secluded from most of the noise of the nearby interstate and campus. It is located off of one of the nature trails, where one interacts first with a small frame that sparks the interest of the human. The trail that is created then leads a path following the rules set in Christopher Alexander’s A Pattern Language under the pattern: “Paths & Goals.” This eventually leads to the main structure, where one experiences several unique spaces, fostering different emotions of curiosity, contemplation, calm, and fear.

19

The structure uses a conglomerate of planes, frames, and mass as visual and proportional cues to different spaces and therefore - experiences. During the design process, many sketches and study models were created, leading to the final form and proportion of the spaces. these are a few that lead to the final design.

In order to further express the prefabricated nature of the structure, I notched the HDF where the foundations would be located. This also expresses the insertion into the site. The site itself is abstracted in a grid to abstract the desity of the landscape and emphasize the tectonic nature of the structure, as well as accentuate the pathways. The site ribs themselves are generated from the structural cues of the pavilion and the paths leading to it.

June Private Residence // Pekin, IL a table for Scott

June is a 2-week long collaborative project between designer/friend Emily Litten and myself for a mutual friend. This coffee table draws inspiration from our client’s strong personaity, as well as our limited resources and funds. The wood consists of “runners” originally used to bundle lumber in mass quantities. They were completely free and were milled down to a module to form our kit of parts.

29

Scott’s personality can be hard to grasp, but he is best defined by his creativity. He works by day handcrafting stone plug jewelry. By night, he is a musician and an artist. He is interested in philosophy, body modification, and D.I.Y. ethics. His music excessively challenges traditional ideas of rythym and technicality, experimenting with soundscapes that are both spatial and technically mature. He is constantly working to hone in his unique tone through his style and tuning of his bass rig.

02

This table draws from Scott’s unique personality, while remaining practical for his uses as a table, seat, and storage. The looping grain of the table top is an homage towards Scott’s music, while the form pays respect to his love of nature and abstraction.

We were to design a coffee table with storage that is also strong enough to double as a seat for extra guests or band practice. The form is a kit of parts comprised of 6 lengths of ripped lumber runners which abstracts cave-like features and houses a secret compartment which remains sensitive to human interaction.

Brady St Public Market Brady Street // Milwaukee, WI a crossroads of neighborhoods

The public market serves as both an anchor for Brady Street, and a beacon to the inner city. It bears a strong presence on Brady St + Pearson Ave, but remains within scale of it’s context from the respective streets. The structure pays a strong homage to the history of Milwaukee through its series of monumental radiating walls constructed from recycled Cream City Bricks. The market square holds the corner of Brady + Holton St with its 40’ Columns. The square provides a connection for both pedestrians + bicyclists by preserving and beautifying the existing bike path, as well as providing an open square.

The market was one of three chosen in its section for a tectonic bay development group project. The team was Sehar Javed, Maxwell Paradis, Damir McCurty, Anthony Lane, and myself. Seeing as I knew the project best and was the most technically inclined, I took the role as supervisor of the project and created the working drawings on the following spread.

Tree Haus Downer Woods // Milwaukee, WI a gateway to the woods

Downer Woods is a hidden gem on the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee campus and is currently under utilized. The residence hall strives to activate the green space instead of providing a contained courtyard within the site. The irregular form of the building is derived from program and context.

45

The courtyard spaces are designed as a gateway from the UWM campus to Downer Woods. Instead of simply creating a large, sun-filled courtyard, the form is a metaphor of the dense forest. It is cut away to reveal pools of light outside that change throughout the day. The building is clad with vertical terracotta baguettes, as well as a terracotta “hypertexture“ shown in the raised “treehouse“ and northern courtyard.

Kern Park Acadamy Riverwest // Milwaukee, WI

fostering individuality within community The goal of this project was to blur the line between natural and artificial to invoke imagination into the children attending the academy. In this school, “natural“ landscape [park] and the “artificial” landscape [school] inform and react to each other to provide zones of safety and a learning in order to help foster a sense of individuality within the community.
