In vervolg op het meerjarenprogramma Innovatie en Conflict staat 2015 in het teken van de Wereldtentoonstelling en de wijze waarop iedere volgende aflevering weer een ander idee van de toekomst en daarmee van innovatie wist te verbeelden.

Following the long-term programme Innovation and Conflict, Het Nieuwe Instituut zooms in on the World Expo in 2015, focusing on the way in which each edition has been able to represent a different idea of the future and thus of innovation.

Het jaar start met een tentoonstelling over plastic, ooit gezien als hét materiaal van de toekomst. Ontwerper en onderzoeker Tal Erez laat met PLASTIC, Promise of a Home-made Future zien hoe die belofte al snel in een nachtmerrie ontaarde. Het materiaal werd synoniem voor milieuvervuiling en consumentisme. Dankzij de 3D-printer krijgt plastic nu een nieuwe kans, waarbij de rol van de consument verandert in die van producent (prosument). Tegenover de huidige wegwerpcultuur zet de tentoonstelling de belofte van een hergebruikcultuur. Zo ver is het alleen nog niet, achter de schermen speelt zich een keiharde strijd af. De industrie ziet kansen voor nieuwe verdienmodellen, die vaak tegengesteld zijn aan het democratische principe van ‘open source’.

The year starts with an exhibition on plastic, once seen as the material of the future. In PLASTIC, Promise of a Home-made Future, designer and researcher Tal Erez shows how that promise quickly turned into a nightmare. The material became a symbol of environmental pollution and consumerism. Today the 3D printer presents new opportunities for plastic, transforming the role of the consumer into that of producer (prosumer). In the exhibition, the throwaway culture is juxtaposed with the promise of a recycle culture. We’re not there yet, though, and behind the scenes a tough battle is taking place. The industrial sector sees opportunities for new business models, which are often in sharp contrast to the democratic principle of ‘open source’.

Vervolgens opent 1:1 Stijlkamers, een installatie van de architect en kunstenaar Andreas Angelidakis, op basis van stijlkamers uit de collectie van het Amsterdam Museum. Stijlkamers zijn veelal historische interieurs die een bepaalde tijdsperiode en haar specifieke stijlkenmerken representeren. Met recente heropeningen in het Louvre en het Rijksmuseum, lijkt de stijlkamer terug van weggeweest. En waarom niet, vele museumliefhebbers koesteren de stijlkamer met heimelijk genoegen, in een tijd waarin de witte tentoonstellingswand, de zogenaamde ‘white cube’, nog altijd domineert. 1:1 Stijlkamers biedt niet alleen een reflectie op het

After this exhibition, 1:1 Period Rooms opens, an installation by architect and artist Andreas Angelidakis, based on period rooms from the collection of the Amsterdam Museum. Period rooms are mostly historical interiors that represent a certain time period and its specific style characteristics. With recent re-openings in the Louvre and the Rijksmuseum, the period room seems to be making a comeback. And why not? In a time when the white ex hibition wall, the so-called ‘white cube’, is still the dominant typology, many museum lovers cherish the Period Room with secret pleasure. 1:1 Period Rooms does not only offer a reflection on the interior and the period room, but

Voor 1:1 Stijlkamers maakt architect en kunstenaar Andreas Angelidakis een installatie met stijlkamers uit het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. De 19e-eeuwse stijlkamers moesten daar in de jaren 70 plaats maken voor witte tentoonstellingswanden. Het Nieuwe Instituut neemt de stijlkamers nu als aanleiding om na te denken over de toekomst van museale presentatiemodellen. De tentoonstelling vormt het tweede deel van een drieluik over interieurs.

Voor 1:1 Stijlkamers maakt architect en kunstenaar Andreas Angelidakis een installatie met delen van stijlkamers uit de collectie van het Amsterdam Museum. Deze kamers komen oor spronkelijk uit het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, waar ze in de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw plaats moesten maken voor de zich snel uitbreidende collectie moderne kunst. De installatie 1:1 Stijlkamers vertelt een verhaal over de betekenis van de negentiende-eeuwse stijlkamer en hoe deze halverwege de twintigste eeuw door de opkomst van de neutrale tentoon stellingswand, de zogenaamde white cube, uit het museum verdween.

For 1:1 Period Rooms, architect and artist Andreas Angelidakis made an installation using parts of period rooms from the collection of the Amsterdam Museum. Originally, these rooms came from the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, where they had to make way for the rapidly expanding collection of modern art in the 1970s. The installation 1:1 Period Rooms tells a story about the significance of the 19th-century period room and how it disappeared from the museum with the advent of the neutral exhibition wall, the so-called white cube.

Reconstructie in de tentoonstelling Stijlkamers werden eind 19de eeuw populair. Met meubels, wandbekleding en kunstwerken werd een ‘stijlzuiver’ beeld van de heersende smaak geconstrueerd. Kroonstuk van 1:1 Stijlkamers is de Empire kamer. Deze stijlkamer zal in samenwerking met de Universiteit van Amsterdam en Amsterdam Museum in de tentoonstelling worden gereconstrueerd. Op woensdag- en zondagmiddag kan het publiek de restauratoren live aan het werk zien. Discursief programma De stijlkamer vormt voor Het Nieuwe Instituut een aanleiding om in een serie lezingen en debatten het denken over de toekomst van museale presentatiemodellen met historisch bewustzijn te verrijken. In het discursief programma bij 1:1 Stijlkamers wordt daarnaast ook nadrukkelijk aandacht besteed aan de manier waarop ruimte in andere domeinen wordt ingezet, zoals het digitale en het commerciële.

Reconstruction in the exhibition Period rooms became popular in the late 19th century. Furniture, wall coverings and works of art were used to offer a ‘stylistically pure’ picture of the prevailing taste. The crowning work of 1:1 Period Rooms is the Empire Room. This period room will be reconstructed in the exhibition in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Museum. On Wednesday and Sunday afternoons the public can watch the restoration experts at work. Discursive programme For Het Nieuwe Instituut the period room forms the starting point for a series of lectures and debates, intended to enrich the discourse on the future of museum models with historical consciousness. The discursive programme in con junction with 1:1 Period Rooms also explicitly addresses the way in which space is used in other areas, such as the digital and the commercial.

PLASTIC, Promises of a Homemade Future is de derde in een serie tentoonstellingen over materialen en hun economische, culturele en maatschappelijke betekenis. Eerder ging het al over biodesign en hout, en een tentoonstelling over glas is in voorbereiding. Deze tentoonstelling laat zien hoe plastic zich van belofte naar bedreiging heeft ontwikkeld en door de 3D-printer opnieuw een andere betekenis krijgt.

PLASTIC Promises of a Home-made Future

PLASTIC, Promises of a Home-made Future onderzoekt de relatie tussen plastic en de 3D-printmarkt. Plastic is de belangrijkste grondstof voor de 3D-printer. Deze nieuwe technologie zou tot een nieuw consumptiemodel kunnen leiden en daarmee plastic van een ecologische bedreiging in een ecologische belofte kunnen doen ver anderen. Maar, zoals de geschiedenis van plastic ons leert, de toekomst pakt niet altijd positief uit.

PLASTIC, Promises of a Home-made Future explores the relationship between plastic and the 3D printing market. Plastic is the main raw material for the 3D printer. This new technology could lead to a new consumption model and thus chance plastic from an eco logical threat to an ecological promise. But, as the history of plastic teaches us, the future does not always turn out positive.

PLASTIC krijgt de vorm van een ‘docubition’, een mix van documentaire en tentoonstelling. Hierin wordt de geschiedenis van plastic verteld, zijn hoogte- en dieptepunten, met de technologische innovatie van het 3D-printen als laatste ontwikkeling. Leidt deze techniek daadwerkelijk tot nieuwe productiemodellen, of krijgt het oude kapitalisme een nieuwe gedaante? In de interactieve installatie van het Perpetual Plastic Project kunnen bezoekers een aantal keren per dag zelf plastic afval verwerken en er een eigen object mee printen. De docubition PLASTIC is gebaseerd op het onderzoek van ontwerper Tal Erez, dat hij verrichtte in het kader van zijn fellowship bij Het Nieuwe Instituut.

PLASTIC takes the form of a ‘docubition’, a mix of documentary and exhibition. It tells the history of plastic, its highs and lows, with the technological innovation of 3D printing as its latest development. Does this technique effectively lead to new business models, or does the old capitalism merely take on a new guise? In the interactive installation of the Perpetual Plastic Project visitors can process plastic waste themselves and print their own object with it. The docubition PLASTIC is based on the research of designer Tal Erez as part of his fellowship at Het Nieuwe Instituut.

De Prix de Rome is de oudste en grootste Nederlandse prijs voor beeldend kunstenaars en architecten onder de 40 jaar. Sinds januari 2013 wordt de prijs georganiseerd en gefinancierd door het Mondriaan Fonds. De tentoonstelling benadrukt het belang van ontwerp en innovatie; kernbegrippen die centraal staan in alle activiteiten van Het Nieuwe Instituut.

Het Nieuwe Instituut presenteert de inzendingen voor de Prix de Rome Architectuur 2014. De Prix de Rome is de oudste en grootste prijs in Nederland voor architecten en beeldend kunstenaars onder de 40 jaar. Winnaar van de Prix de Rome 2014 is Donna van Milligen Bielke.

Het Nieuwe Instituut presents the entries for the Prix de Rome Architecture 2014. The Prix de Rome is the oldest and most established award for architects and artists under the age of 40 in the Netherlands. Winner of the Prix de Rome 2014 is Donna van Milligen Bielke.

Voor deze aflevering werden acht (landschap)architecten en stedenbouwkundigen gevraagd om een visie te ontwikkelen op de Hoogstraat in Rotterdam, een levendige stadsstraat met gemengde functies. De genomineerden voor de Prix de Rome Architectuur 2014 zijn: Steven Delva, Florian Idenburg, Marieke Kums, Kees Lokman, Donna van Milligen Bielke, Jasper Nijveldt, Tim Prins en Max Cohen de Lara en David Mulder (XML). De Prix de Rome wordt sinds 2013 georganiseerd en gefinancierd door het Mondriaan Fonds. Verrassende vondsten uit de collectie #3 – Nederland bouwt in baksteen Nederland bouwt in baksteen is een tentoonstelling die de veronderstelde zegetocht van het modernisme in de periode tussen de twee wereldoorlogen nuanceert. Twee fotocollecties uit het archief laten zien dat baksteen nog altijd een geliefd bouwmateriaal was, ook voor experiment. Bijzondere toevoeging zijn foto’s van het bakstenen wandreliëf dat de Britse beeldhouwer Henry Moore begin jaren vijftig voor Het Bouwcentrum in Rotterdam ontwierp. Nederland bouwt in baksteen is de derde aflevering van Verrassende vondsten uit de collectie. Voor deze serie selecteert archivaris Alfred Marks aan de hand van een thema telkens bijzondere tekeningen, foto’s, voor werpen en maquettes uit het archief van Het Nieuwe Instituut.

Surprising Finds from the Collection #3 – The Netherlands Build in Brick The Netherlands Build in Brick is an exhibition that nuances the assumed triumph of modernism in the years between the two world wars. Two collections of photographs from the archive show that brick remained a popular building material, even for experimen tation. A remarkable addition is a series of pictures of the brick wall relief designed by sculptor Henry Moore for the Bouwcentrum in Rotterdam. The Netherlands Build in Brick is the third installment of Surprising Finds from the Collection. In this series, archivist Alfred Marks thematically selects special drawings, photographs, objects and models from the archives of Het Nieuwe Instituut.

Inside Outside / Petra Blaisse Intervention in the Sonneveld House

Met één ingenieuze ingreep biedt interieur- en landschapsontwerper Petra Blaisse de bezoeker van Huis Sonneveld een geheel nieuwe ervaring. Het Nieuwe Instituut vroeg Blaisse te reageren op het originele interieur van de woning uit de jaren dertig. Met haar bureau Inside Outside legt Blaisse ‘de andere kant’ van Huis Sonneveld bloot en versterkt de relatie tussen binnen en buiten. Ze reageert hiermee op de drie kernbegrippen van het Nieuwe Bouwen: licht, lucht en ruimte. Door de confrontatie met een actuele ontwerppraktijk wordt de historische museumwoning naast Het Nieuwe Instituut de hedendaagse ontwerpwereld binnengehaald.

A single ingenious intervention by interior and landscape designer Petra Blaisse offers visitors a totally new experience of the Sonneveld House. Het Nieuwe Instituut invited Blaisse to respond to the original interior of the 1930s villa. By exposing the ‘other side’ of the Sonneveld House and enhancing the relation between inside and outside, Blaisse and her office Inside Outside reinterpret the three key principles of Dutch Functionalism: light, air and space. By confronting it with a current design practice, the historical house museum is introduced into the field of contemporary design.

Huis Sonneveld Naast Het Nieuwe Instituut staat Huis Sonneveld. Deze vrijstaande villa werd in 1929 ontworpen door architectenbureau Brinkman en Van der Vlugt in opdracht van Albertus Sonneveld, een van de directeuren van de Van Nellefabriek. Het gezin Sonneveld maakte in 1933 een radicale ommezwaai naar een moderne leefstijl: ze namen bijna niets mee uit de oude woning en startten met een schone lei in een compleet nieuw interieur. De woning is licht en ruim, geheel naar de moderne idealen van die tijd, met strak vormgegeven meubels, veel balkons en grote raampartijen die uitzicht bieden op het groen van de omliggende tuin. Huis Sonneveld is wereldwijd een van de best bewaard gebleven woonhuizen in de stijl van Het Nieuwe Bouwen.

The Sonneveld House The Sonneveld House is located next to Het Nieuwe Instituut. The villa was designed in 1929 by the architecture firm Brinkman & Van der Vlugt and commissioned by Albertus Sonneveld, one of the directors of the Van Nelle Factory. In 1933 the Sonneveld family made a radical shift to a modern lifestyle, taking almost nothing from their old home and starting with a clean slate in a completely new interior. The house is light and spacious, fully in line with the modern ideals of that time, with sleek furniture, lots of balconies and large windows that overlook the greenery of the surrounding garden. The Sonneveld House is one of the world’s best-preserved houses in the style of Het Nieuwe Bouwen.

World Expo

Vanaf 26 april presenteert Het Nieuwe Instituut een programma naar aanleiding van de 34e Wereldtentoonstelling die mei 2015 opent in Milaan. Het Nieuwe Instituut neemt de geschiedenis van de Wereldtentoonstelling als vertrekpunt voor een programma over hoe cultuur en industrie gezamenlijk inspirerende vooruitgangsverhalen kunnen verbeelden. Sinds zijn ontstaan in de negentiende eeuw is de Wereldtentoonstelling een spektakel van technisch vernuft. Ook nu weer zijn nieuwe ideeĂŤn en verhalen nodig om aan een duurzame toekomst te kunnen werken waarin technologische mogelijkheden, sociaal-maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen, ecologie en economie elkaar versterken.

From April 26 onwards, Het Nieuwe Instituut presents a programme on the occasion of the 34th World Expo, which opens in Milan in May 2015. Het Nieuwe Instituut takes the history of the World Expo as a starting point for a programme questioning how culture and industry can jointly represent inspiring stories of progress. Since its emergence in the 19th century, the World Expo has been a spectacle of technical ingenuity. New ideas and stories are still needed to build on a sustainable future in which technological possibilities, social developments, ecology and economy can strengthen one another.

The Crystal Palace, een grote expositiehal die in 1851 voor de eerste wereldtentoonstelling in Londen werd gebouwd, vormt het vertrekpunt van de tentoonstelling GLAS. Het immense gebouw was door het vooruitstrevende gebruik van glas en staal bijna geheel doorzichtig. De tentoonstelling laat aan de hand van de lens, de reageerbuis, de broeikas, het windscherm en de glasvezel zien hoe het materiaal glas altijd een centrale rol in de vooruitgang heeft gespeeld. Een terugkerend onderdeel van vroege wereldtentoonstellingen was de Hal van de Machines. Het Nieuwe Instituut vertaalt dit fenomeen naar de 21ste eeuw en presenteert een dierentuin van machines. Machines gedragen zich immers steeds meer als levende wezens die communiceren en deelnemen aan de ecologie. Het Nieuwe Instituut presenteert zo een nieuw verhaal over de toekomst van techniek.

The Crystal Palace, a large exhibition hall that was built in 1851 for the first World Expo in London, forms the starting point of the exhibition GLASS. As a result of the innovative use of glass and steel, the immense building was almost completely transparent. On the basis of the lens, the test tube, the greenhouse, the windshield and fiberglass, the exhibition shows how glass has always played a central role within progress. A recurring element in the early world fairs was the Machinery Hall. Het Nieuwe Instituut translates this phenomenon into the 21st century and presents a zoo of machines. Indeed, machines are increasingly acting as living beings that communicate and participate in the ecology. This way, Het Nieuwe Instituut presents a new story about the future of technology.

Plastic for children

In het kader van de tentoonstelling PLASTIC, Promises of a Home-made Future ontdekken kinderen in Het Nieuwe Instituut welke nieuwe mogelijkheden de 3D-printtechniek biedt voor de toekomst van het materiaal plastic.

As part of the exhibition PLASTIC, Promises of a Home-made Future children can discover the new possibilities of 3D printing for the future of the material plastic at Het Nieuwe Instituut.

3D-printer Kinderen gaan aan de slag met de recycling van plastic afval en kunnen zo zien hoe de 3D-printer dit plastic omvormt tot nieuwe legoblokjes. Op het doe-dek kunnen de kinderen bouwen met de vers geprinte legoblokjes. Zo worden kinderen uitgedaagd het tot de verbeelding sprekende Skoaterwaldgebouw met de zwanen van Sjoerd Soeters na te bouwen. 3D-printpen Op woensdag- en zondagmiddagen maken kinderen onder begeleiding een eigen ontwerp met een 3D-printpen. Uit deze pen komt vloeibare plastic, het is dus een soort mini 3D-printer. Kinderworkshops Op 15 februari maken kinderen een tekening op de iPad die ze vervolgens kunnen laten 3D-printen. Deze workshop wordt in samenwerking met Doodle 3D aangeboden. Op 22 maart leren kinderen de moge lijkheden van de 3D-pen kennen. Deze workshop wordt in samenwerking met Sober Industries aangeboden. 3D printer Children get started with recycling plastic waste and experience how the 3D printer converts plastic into new Lego bricks. At the do-deck the kids can build structures with the freshly printed Lego bricks. Amongst others, the children are challenged to reconstruct the imaginative Skoaterwald building with the swans by Sjoerd Soeters. 3D print pen On Wednesday and Sunday afternoons, children are taught to make their own design with a 3D print pen. This pen produces liquid plastic and can be seen as a kind of mini 3D printer. Children’s workshops On February 15, children can make a drawing on the iPad, which will then be 3D printed. This workshop is offered in collaboration with Doodle 3D. On March 22, the children learn about the possibilities of the 3D pen. This workshop is offered in collaboration with Sober Industries. Staying over at Leonard Children’s audio tour

Kinderen ontdekken Huis Sonneveld op een speelse manier met de kinder audiotour en het bijbehorende koffertje. Leonard, de kleinzoon van de heer en mevrouw Sonneveld, neemt de kinderen mee op ontdekkingstocht. Hij fluistert ze alle geheimen van het huis in terwijl de kinderen met de spullen uit hun koffertje alles komen te weten over het ontwerp en de bewoners van Huis Sonneveld.

Children can discover the Sonneveld House in a playful way with a children’s audio tour and a suitcase. Leonard, the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Sonneveld, guides the children on their exploration and reveals all the secrets of the house, while the children come to know everything about the design and the residents of the Sonneveld House using the items in their suitcase.

House in a White Tutu

Tot en met 24 april 2015 werkt kunstenaar en ontwerper Job Wouters in de foyer van Het Nieuwe Instituut aan een serie muurschilderingen. In december voorzag Wouters met zijn witte kalligrafieën de glazen gevel van Het Nieuwe Instituut van een decoratieve tweede huid. Hij maakt in zijn interventies typografische en taalkundige knipogen naar het programma van Het Nieuwe Instituut. Huis in een Witte Tutu, de overkoepelende titel van zijn interventies, is dan ook een anagram van ‘Het Nieuwe Instituut’. Kanariezaad Octet Violist, de titel van de eerste muurschildering die in december werd opgeleverd, is een anagram van ‘Creativiteit als noodzaak’.

Until April 24, 2015, artist and designer Job Wouters is working on a series of murals in the foyer of Het Nieuwe Instituut. In December, the white calli graphies made by Wouters provided the glass facade of Het Nieuwe Instituut with a decorative second skin. In his interventions he makes use of typographic and linguistic references to the programme of Het Nieuwe Instituut. House in a White Tutu, the umbrella title of his interventions, is therefore also an anagram of ‘Het Nieuwe Instituut’. Kanariezaad Octet Violist, the title of the first mural that was presented in December, is an anagram of ‘Creativiteit als noodzaak’.

Job Wouters (1980), beter bekend als Letman, is van oorsprong typograaf. Zijn handgemaakte en vaak kleurrijke letterontwerpen spelen met de grenzen van illustratie en graffiti. Sinds zijn afstuderen in 2004 bouwt Wouters gestaag aan een internationale ontwerppraktijk, met opdrachtgevers als Stussy, Nike, Duvel en de New York Times. Samen met beeldend kunstenaar Gijs Frieling ontwierp hij in 2012 dessins voor de najaarscollectie van modeontwerper Dries van Noten. De laatste jaren legt Wouters zich toe op typografische muurschilderingen, die hij onder meer in Milaan, Parijs, Los Angeles, Tokyo en Moskou maakte. Nu is ook Rotterdam aan de beurt.

Job Wouters (1980), better known as Letman, is first and foremost a typo grapher. His handmade and often colourful type designs play with the boundaries of illustration and graffiti. Since his graduation in 2004, Wouters has been steadily developing an international design practice, with clients including Stussy, Nike, Duvel and the New York Times. Together with artist Gijs Frieling he created the designs for the autumn collection of fashion designer Dries van Noten. In recent years, Wouters has been focusing on typographic murals, which he has produced in Milan, Paris, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Moscow, and now, finally, in Rotterdam.

Tentoongestelde interieurs speelden een belangrijke rol in het verspreiden van ideeën over wonen en interieurontwerp. Architecten en ontwerpers gebruiken nog steeds 1:1 installaties om te illustreren hoe zij denken over de relatie tussen architectuur, design en het interieur. Op deze avond vertellen enkelen daarover, n.a.v. de publicatie DASH#11 – Interiors on Display.

Period rooms played an important role in transferring ideas about living and domestic design. Architects and designers still use 1:1 installations to illustrate how they reflect upon the relationship between architecture, design and the interior. During this evening, designers talk about the relevance of these installations in the context of the publication DASH#11 – Interiors on Display.

Modernity, ideology and the interior 20:00–22:00 (voertaal Engels) Avond i.h.k.v. 1:1 Stijlkamers met Penny Sparke (Kingston University London) en Greg Castillo (Berkeley University of California). Sparke vertelt over de opkomst van het moderne interieur en de rol die het negentiende-eeuwse interieur hierin speelde als plek waar moderne waarden en ideeën werden gevormd. Castillo laat zien hoe het interieur in de koude oorlog aan beide kanten van het IJzeren Gordijn als propagandamiddel werd ingezet.

Modernity, ideology and the interior 20:00–22:00 (Language: English) Evening in the framework of 1:1 Period Rooms with Penny Sparke (Kingston University London) and Greg Castillo (Berkeley University of California). Sparke talks about the emergence of the ‘modern interior’, and the role that nineteenth century interiors played as places in which modern ideas and values were formed. Castillo shows how, during the Cold War, the interior was used as a propaganda tool on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

De stijlkamer toonde een geïdealiseerd beeld van ons verleden. De kamer vertelde vaak meer over de tijd dat ze werd samengesteld, dan over de periode die ze representeerde. De stijlkamer staat in musea weer volop in de belangstelling. Waar komt deze belangstelling vandaan en wat vertellen deze nieuwe interpretaties over de omgang van musea met de geschiedenis? Met o.a. Paul Spies (Amsterdam Museum) en Barbara Laan (interieurhistoricus).

The period room showed an idealised image of our past. The room often illustrated more about the time they were made than the period they represented. The period room is making a comeback in museums. Where does this renewed interest come from and what do these interpretations tell us about museums’ encounter with the past? Symposium 1:1 Over de toekomst van museale presentatiemodellen Hoe kan met ruimte een bepaalde wereld worden oproepen, een verhaal worden ontvouwen en betekenis worden gegeven? Dit symposium blikt terug op museale modellen als de stijlkamer en de white cube, en onderzoekt hoe ruimtelijke modellen uit andere domeinen, zoals het digitale en het commerciële, interfereren met de museale ruimte.

Het Nieuwe Instituut

Het Nieuwe Instituut is het huis van de Nederlandse architectuur, design en e-cultuur. In het gebouw aan het Museumpark worden tentoonstellingen en debatten georganiseerd over de verschillende ontwerpdisciplines zoals grafisch ontwerp, productontwerp, games, mode, (interieur)architectuur, stedenbouw en landschapsarchitectuur. Daarnaast beheert het instituut een uitgebreid archief over werk en leven van Nederlandse architecten en stedenbouwers. Het instituut heeft drie belangrijke functies: presenteren, onderzoeken en bewaren. Daarbij wordt zowel naar het verleden als naar de toekomst gekeken. Programmalijnen De diverse activiteiten worden langs de programmalijnen De Dingen en De Materialen en Landschap en Interieur en een jaarlijks veranderend thema aangeboden. Binnen deze thema’s worden de verschillende disciplines met elkaar verbonden en kunnen fascinerende, verhelderende en inno vatieve dwarsverbanden ontstaan.

Het Nieuwe Instituut is the home of Dutch architecture, design and e-culture. The building next to the Museumpark hosts exhibitions and debates on the various design disciplines, including graphic design, product design, games, fashion, (interior) architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture. In addition, the institute maintains an extensive archive on the work and life of Dutch architects and urban planners. The institute has three main functions: presentation, research and conservation. All three functions involve looking at the past as well as into the future. Programme tracks The diverse activities are presented within the programme tracks Things and Materials, Landscape and Interior, and an annually changing theme. Within these themes different disciplines are interlinked, fostering fascinating, enlightening and innovative connections.

Landschap en Interieur Grenzen vervagen, niet alleen die tussen de stad en het landschap, maar ook die tussen binnen en buiten, tussen privaat en publiek en tussen fysiek en digitaal. De programmalijn Landschap en Interieur gaat over de veranderende wereld en biedt Het Nieuwe Instituut de mogelijkheid om op de verschillende schaalniveaus van architectuur en design, maar ook transdisciplinair en vanuit de e-cultuur te opereren.

Landscape and Interior Boundaries blur, not only between city and countryside, but also between inside and outside, private and public, physical and digital. The programme track Landscape and Interior addresses this changing world and offers Het Nieuwe Instituut the possibility to operate on the different scales of architecture and design, but also transdisciplinary, as well as from the e-culture.

De Dingen en De Materialen De programmalijn De Dingen en De Materialen richt zich op de hernieuwde belangstelling voor het ambacht en voor de kwaliteit van het materiaal waarvan objecten zijn gemaakt. Daarbij vormt de radicale verandering van de tastbare werkelijkheid door de huidige kruisbestuiving tussen natuur, wetenschap en creativiteit een belangrijk aandachtspunt. Vanuit deze programmalijn werkt Het Nieuwe Instituut, samen met uiteenlopende culturele, zakelijke, bestuurlijke en wetenschappelijke partijen, aan een meerjarig onderzoek naar de nieuwe verhouding tussen biologie en ontwerp.

Things and Materials The programme track Things and Materials focuses on the renewed interest in craftsmanship and the quality of the materials from which objects are made. The radical transformation of tangible reality by the current interdisciplinary approach to nature, science and creativity forms a major theme. With this programme track, Het Nieuwe Instituut initiates a long-term research project the new relationship between biology and design, in collaboration with a variety of cultural, business, administrative and scientific partners.

Jaarthema Innovatie is per definitie aan de actualiteit gebonden en kan niet los worden gezien van de heersende tijdgeest. Naast de meerjarige programmaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s De Dingen en De Materialen en Landschap en Interieur, presenteert Het Nieuwe Instituut ieder kalenderjaar een derde leidraad voor verschillende activiteiten. In 2015 staat het fenomeen van de Wereldtentoonstelling centraal en in 2016 wordt de aandacht gericht op de Olympische Spelen.

Annual theme Innovation is always tied to current events and a prevailing zeitgeist. In addition to the long-term programmes Things and Materials and Landscape and Interior, Het Nieuwe Instituut annually presents a third programme track for various activities. In 2015, Het Nieuwe Instituut focuses on the phenomenon of the World Expo and in 2016 a programme will be developed on the Olympics.

Studiezaal/bibliotheek De studiezaal is toegankelijk voor iedereen die de archieven en de bibliotheek van Het Nieuwe Instituut wil raadplegen en bestuderen. Het archief richt zich op leven en werk van Nederlandse architecten. De bibliotheek is internationaal georiënteerd.

Reading room/library The reading room is open to anyone who wants to consult or study the archives and library of Het Nieuwe Instituut. The archive focuses on the life and work of Dutch architects. The library is internationally oriented.
