“The "tyranny of the private realm" is destroying our cities.----Court and Garden by Professor Michael Dennis Under the rapid urbanization process, a lot of culture and substances carried with memories are diminishing. This project is not only to bring back the memories of traditional social spaces by reproducing the scene of banyan tree and its associated life but also a protest to some selfish modern buildings.

01 Memory - a recall of past CHALLENGE “The "tyranny of the private realm" is destroying our cities. ----Court and Garden by Professor Michael Dennis To gain more profit, more land has been used for intensive exploitation. Instead of being friendly to the city and citizens, some developers nowadays only cares about their own benefits while designing architectures. Moreover, some memory and culture such as leisure lifestyle under the old banyan tree also have gone with the land. As a result, there will be no place for southern Chinese to comfort their nostalgia of banyan tree.

Stretch as high as possible.

Unwelcome citizens.

The diminishing banyan trees and culture

Occupy the land as much as possible.

Strange shape was adopted to be special.

This architecture locates in the southeast of Baiyun Lake Park, a typical Lingnan landscape. There are several important landscape points in the park. The design, in order to be the real part of the park, is supposed to have connection with these landscape points. Firstly, in the design visitors should be able to have perception of other landscape points in vision. Secondly, in other parts of the park, the design should be harmonious visually with the park to the visitors. Thirdly, there are banyan trees in the design site originally. The design should response to these information. 02

01 Memory - a recall of past DESIGN CONCEPT The core design ideas are banyan tree and relationship of architecture, visitors and the park. According to the banyan tree, the architecture should provide friendly space for visitors to bring back the memories of traditional social spaces by reproducing the scene of banyan tree and its associated life. To make the relationship close and friendly, instead of being distinct, the museum should blend in the park and provide space for visitors to have activities.

Generating Process 1.Origin

2.Windmill

The architecure should make response to the surrounding.

Windmill, a typical toy, will increase the visual possibility to the scenery, decrease the sensation of volume.

3.Core

4.Crown

Adding a banyan tree in the core of the windmill to strenghthen the topic of the museum.

The third floor moves closer to the lake, providing grey space and decreasing the sensation of volume.

5.Aerial Roots

6.Leaf Crevices

Columns stretches from the museum to the ground, which defines the grey space and supports the building.

Using shutter, a typical ecological technique in Lingnan, as roof to make the outside environment a part of the interior design of museum.

01 Memory - a recall of past landscape showcase Lingnan Landscape in the Baiyun Park is also an important part of Lingnan Culture. To make this culture a part of exhibition in the museum. "Landscape Showcase", referring to the "enframed scenery" principle in classical Chinese garden, is designed in this museum. With "Landscape Showcase", which is equally important to other substantial exhibits, visitors can feel the outside environment while visiting the museum.

01 Memory - a recall of past Under the banyan tree South China Art& Culture Museum as a public architecture has its responsibility to give something back to the public. In this project, the museum is not a arrogant and indifferent building, which usually look distant from the most noteless and homely villager. On the contrary, it acts actively as a community space and nostalgia space to comfort the lose of the old Banyan tree in everyone's memory.

Revitalization of river corridor - a plan for future

Type: Academic & Personal Urban Design/Lanscape Design "SCUT+UCB" International Urban Design Workshop Supervisor: Prof. Peter Bosselmann 12/2014, Guangzhou Individual Work

"New Orleans is wide-awake, but they are not yet discussing these questions(water issue) in the great Chinese, Vietnamese or Indian deltas. It’s high time that that changed. There are tens of millions of people living there!" ----Prof. Peter Bosselmann This design is to use landscape urbanism as a method to deal with the existing problems of the site: segregation, infrastructure and the relationship between villagers and river. Further, water level rising in 100 years is also considered, according to which the design can coordinate.

08

02 Outlook - a plan for future CHALLENGE The village locates in a relatively low lying land, which may suffer from flood of the adjacent river, though it may be not so obvious nowadays. Moreover, the present situation of the river leads to the isolation of the village to some extent. The polluted water from agriculture and dwelling makes the river dirty and may cause the bloom of algea.

03 Hybrid - a typology about balance CONDITION OF URBANIZATION In China, in the first place, conflicts between citizens, architecture and environment are mild. When urbanization got rapid, high rise buildings with podium buildings and wide roads, in order to get profits, occur deliriously, which have occupied public space. Furthermore, connection between citizens, architecture and environment has become weak.

04 Arousal - a prototypical solution CHALLENGE

Teenagers in cities barely treasure their chance of education and barely understand the meaning of it. We've witnessed that so many students became totally confused and went astray after attending college. In villages of China, on the contrary, numerous children have been left behind by their parents who work in the city. They have no ability to make their living, no chance to study at school, and no one to accompany them. Their life are full of desperation.

2 Realize the benefit of knowledge 3 Self-actualize with own effort

We need a balance. Children from cities should be educated to be grateful and gain their resource on their own; children from villages also deserve a chance to gain education with all the effort they have made.

This is what we propose, a utopia of study, where students will gain all their resources, including food, shelters and, most importantly, education, with their labor. 19

The Channel is a place for students to feel the nature, consider about themselves and communicate with others deeply. Terrace, a marvelous native landscape, provides a chance for students to forget the flashy things brought by the hustle and bustle of city and calm down to contemplate. Rooms with different scales provide different feelings to meet different needs. In addition, the shadow of channel is an essential part of courtyard space.

Skyscrapper Design - A future skyscrapper system

Type: Academic Architecture Design 09/2016-12/2016

Team Work Partners: Boqun Huai, Yue Peng Contribution: Concept Development, Modeling, Rendering, Diagram Drawing

Nowadays, human-computer interaction have infiltrated virtually every industry on the planet. However, architectural design has not followed this global technological trend as closely. Therefore, this project proposes a self-conscious and metabolic building model: the building should interact with the environment and people, making the three become a complete symbiotic system.

05 Flow - a future skyscrapper system ELEVATION

PROPOSAL This project proposes a self-conscious and metabolic building model: the building should interact with the environment and people, making the three become a complete symbiotic system. Like plants in nature can produce photosynthetic capacity to transport nutrients, the building can detect its own energy needs, regulate transmission, and perform post-analysis on information collected, emulating nature's own comprehensive self-regulation.
