avid Markland, cofounder and executive director of Midsummer Scream, stated, “This year, for the first time ever, I'm putting together a Halloween attraction. It's called Cemetery Lane: Trick-R-Treat Experience. Since I have lived in an apartment for a number of years, I've plotted how I could rent a creepy old house to decorate for Halloween and hand out treats. And then, when I started producing events, the dream grew to taking over an entire neighborhood. When the opportunity came up to do this at Heritage Square Museum, I immediately booked the location.” The event will be held from October 27-31 at Heritage Square Los Angeles, 3800 Homer St. in Los Angeles, just north of the I-5/I-110 freeway intersection in Montecito Heights. Heritage Square is an outdoor museum of old homes from throughout Los Angeles that have been moved there for preservation. And of course, a few are haunted. Together with his Midsummer Scream co-producers, Claire Dunlap and Ian Momii Momii was technical director for The Nest, a 2020 psychological thriller film written, directed, and produced by Sean Durkin; it starred Jude Law and

SENATOR BOB ARCHULETA with Assemblywoman Lisa Calderon (D-Industry) and La Habra Heights resident Castulo De La Rocha at the La Habra Heights Fire Department Community event at The Park.
Senator Bob Archuleta (D-Pico Rivera) co-hosted a community celebration for the La Habra Heights Fire Department's new fire truck and new apparatus headquarters. The event was at The Park in La Habra Heights. "It is imperative that our first responders be empowered with the resources needed to safely and effectively do their job. I am happy that this year's budget delivered a major funding victory for our firefighters that allowed them to purchase a new fire truck and new apparatus head-
quarters," Senator Archuleta said. "We are all grateful to the firefighters for their commitment to our community's public safety given a fire season that began early and displayed an intensity we have not previously experienced. Their vigilance in the face of such dangers merits our appreciation, and I am excited about our community coming together to celebrate our firefighters." The Senator was joined by Assemblymember Lisa Calderon, who also represents the city of La Habra Heights, for the $75,000 check presentation.
The Latino Restaurant Association launched DINE Latino Restaurant Week in Pico Rivera this past Tuesday, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. It is part of the Association's initiative to raise awareness about the “challenging and inequitable economic recovery” in the Latino restaurant industry and promote patronage of struggling Latino restaurants. More than 150 Southland Latino restaurants will be promoting special menu items and drink specials to get people back into the restaurants and help keep these businesses going in their communities; it runs now through Sunday. “I am honored the Latino Restaurant Association chose the City of Pico Rivera to launch their DINE Latino Restaurant Week to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.,” said Pico Rivera Councilmember Gustavo Camacho. “Latino restaurants have been hit particularly hard during this pandemic driven economy." CEO of the Association Lilly Rocha, kicked off the special week, with Vicente Ortiz, owner of Don Chente Bar & Grill. “Most of the Latino restaurants are
mom and pop restaurants, we really need support, please support our businesses,” said Ortiz. The Association manages to promote business through initiatives but there are also many other ways to help. “Just liking a picture, sharing with a friend, just telling someone helps. And this organization and promoting Dine Latino is helping us,” said Tatiana Pacheca, owner of Andrea’s Healthy Kitchen. “Latino restaurants have been hit particularly hard during this pandemic driven economy, Camacho told HMG-CN. "Anything we can do to assist them to rebound and get back on the road to recovery will help create jobs, support families and stimulate the local economy. I encourage everyone to go out this week with your families to patronize and support your local Latino owned restaurants, especially those in Pico Rivera because we have many fine restaurants in our community specializing in Latin cuisine.” Participating restaurants can be found at latinorestaurantassociation.org/.

HMG-CN has said it before - social media must be regulated and a cabinet position created under the president. The government cannot allow an industry that prints cash to regulate itself. Nothing good will result. But maybe allowing content that is literally killing people will finally be the trigger. YouTube, owned by Google, the same company that recently capitulated to Vladamir Putin in pulling down a voting app, is pulling a "look over there" maneuver and "expanding its crackdown on vaccine misinformation." Better late than never Comrade Google. Vaccine misinformation has been a huge concern to health officials who issued an advisory in July to warn Americans about the bogus information peddled on social media platforms. According to reports, as of Wednesday, YouTube had already ejected a herd of high-profile anti-vaccine creators, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Reports are that Putin is "very angry" and will exact revenge because all of his
Kremlin-financed vaccine misinformation channels have been removed. The company updated its guidelines this past Wednesday to "add specifics for those spreading lies about the COVID vaccine that are approved and confirmed to be safe and effective by local health authorities and the WHO.” How long did it take? A least a year. How much money did Google and earn, we'll never know. But wait, instead of banning all false content, YouTube defined what content will be banned: Content alleging that vaccines cause chronic side effects, outside of rare side effects that are recognized by health authorities. Content claiming that vaccines do not reduce transmission or contraction of the disease. Content misrepresenting the substances contained in vaccines. Why did the company feel the need to identify categories of lying; a lie is a lie. At least it is something. YouTube said it has already removed over 130,000 videos for violating

U.S. Betting on a Pill to Treat Covid-19 A new $3.2 billion program will support the development of antiviral pills, which could start arriving by the end of this year. The US is funding, to the tune of nearly $4 billion, to develop pills to fight COVID early in the course of infection, potentially saving many lives in the years to come. The Antiviral Program for Pandemics, will speed up the clinical trials and, if all goes well, some of those first pills could be ready by the end of the year Influenza, H.I.V. and hepatitis C, can be treated with a simple pill. Now it is time for COVID. Say you wake up in the morning, you don’t feel very well, your sense of smell and taste go away and you have a sore throat. You can call up your doctor and say I have Covid and I need a prescription. Scientists have found the best time to try to block the coronavirus is in the first few days of the disease, when the virus is replicating rapidly and the immune system has not yet mounted a defense. So far, only one antiviral has demonstrated a clear benefit to people in hospitals: remdesivir. In October, it became the first — and
so far, the only — antiviral drug to gain full F.D.A. approval to treat the disease. Yet remdesivir’s performance has left many researchers underwhelmed. In November, the World Health Organization recommended against using the drug. Companies began a second study last fall, this time testing the drug on people recently diagnosed with Covid-19. That trial is continuing, and Merck is recruiting volunteers with a higher risk of infection, such as older people with obesity and diabetes. The trial should deliver clear results by October. Another drug the government is considering is AT-527, developed by Atea Pharmaceuticals. The compound has already proven safe and effective as a treatment for hepatitis C, and early studies suggested it might also work against Covid-19. The other drug was created by scientists at Pfizer. Last spring, the scientists decided to modify its old structure so that it would work against the new coronavirus’s protease. More than 200 Pfizer researchers joined forces on the effort on the molecule, known for now as PF-07321332. The drug had been designed to be taken intravenously, but the Pfizer researchers succeeded in altering its structure to work as a pill. When mice were given the drug orally, it reached high enough levels in the body to block the coronavirus. Pfizer
launched a clinical trial in March to study its safety in people, and expects to move to later-stage testing next month. Experts are urging a fully integrated system, people will need to gain access to the drugs as soon as they test positive. The government will also spend up to $1.2 billion on research centers where scientists will carry out early-stage studies on drugs that block the coronavirus in other ways. Some drugs may interfere

10 High Impact Tulips to Delight Your Neighbors Once your tulip bulbs are in the ground, you can relax and wait for the beautiful spring tulip display. BY MELINDA MYERS

ig, bold and beautiful, these dazzling tulips are sure to brighten your gardens and neighborhood. Include a few or all ten to create a colorful display throughout the spring that is sure to delight you and everyone who passes by. Welcome spring with Red Emperor, one of the earliest tulips to bloom. It’s not
surprising it has remained popular for more than 80 years. Also known as Madame Lefeber, this heirloom tulip features extralarge, bright red blooms with a golden yellow base. As the flowers mature, they can be up to seven inches across. From heirloom to flashy, it is easy to see why Monsella is one of the most popular tulips. The early blooming double flowers have fragrant layers of canary yellow petals with bold red stripes. A great choice for containers. As early spring tulips begin to fade, the mid-spring varieties take center stage. To help plan for continuous color throughout the spring, consult Longfield Gardens’ Planning Guide for Tulips. Tulip Ad Rem has scarlet red petals edged in golden yellow. As with other Darwin Hybrids, the flowers are enormous and this one also has a nice fragrance. Blushing Apeldoorn is another mid spring bloomer with extra-large flowers. The blend of yellow, gold, orange and red on each flower make it a standout in any landscape. Plant the bulbs en masse to create a stunning display or pair them with daffodils to extend the show. Change things up in mid to late spring with the hot pink flowers of Cosmopolitan. The goblet shaped fuchsia flowers are held high on 18 to 20” stems. Be sure to plant extras for spring flower arrangements. Team up Cosmopolitan with the violet-blue flowers of Purple Flag. Or shake things up by pairing this lovely purple tulip with flowers that bloom in its complementary colors yellow and orange.
OCTOBER 1, 2021 As temperatures climb, the late blooming tulip Sky High Scarlet really shines. Its huge tomato red blossoms hold up well despite the heat that often shortens late spring tulip displays. You and your neighbors will enjoy watching the transformation of World Expression tulips. The flowers start out soft primrose yellow with scarlet red flames. As the blossoms mature, the petals whiten, and the flames deepen to a cardinal red. Add a little Midnight Magic to your late spring garden. This double late tulip has multiple layers of petals in a blend of burgundy and garnet. Pair it with white for a formal look or energize the display by combining it with orange and yellow blooms. Be sure to cut a few of these large, rose-like flowers and enjoy their fragrance. End the tulip season with a blaze of color. Sun Lover features vibrant orange petals with stripes of deep orange and red. The flowers open wider and wider each day and are a dramatic addition to any bouquet. Order tulip bulbs in late summer for the best selection. Shipping starts in early fall and once the bulbs arrive, they should be stored in a cool, dark place until you plant. Tulips grow best when the bulbs are planted in late fall, after the first hard frost and before the ground freezes. Those in mild climates (zones 8-10) will need to pre-chill their tulip bulbs in the refrigerator for 10 to 14 weeks before planting in the garden. Once your tulip bulbs are in the ground, you can relax and wait for the beautiful spring tulip display. Your neighbors are sure to thank you for this colorful addition to the block.

Dave's Hot Chicken in Lakewood - We Tried Every Level

La Mirada Public Safety Seat Filled At the latest La Mirada City Council meeting, Councilman John Lewis nominated Angelo Maldonado to fill a vacancy on the Public Safety Commission. The La Mirada Public Safety Commission studies, makes reports, holds hearings, and makes recommendations to City Council on matters relating to public safety in the City. Major areas of responsibility include items of traffic safety as related to traffic and pedestrian control; and adequacy of police, fire, and health services. Maldonado has been a La Mirada resident since 1984. He serves as a law clerk and is the Commander of VFW, Post 9148 in La Mirada. He has served as President of the La Mirada Volunteer Center; President of the Charter Legal Clinic, an adjunct member
DAVE'S HOT CHICKEN opened recently with this LCCN Publisher, loving hot food, visiting to take a taste test. I tried them all, excellent chicken, brined to perfection. The last two heat levels required a milkshake.
BY BRIAN HEWS The drive-thru chicken wars have stepped up the game in Lakewood with another serious contender, Dave's Hot Chicken, the fast-food franchise specializing in Nashville hot chicken. The mouth-watering preparation brines every piece of boneless chicken for hours, so the spices are in the skin and meat instead of just slathered on a piece of un-brined chicken. Dave's lets you order your preferred level of spiciness by giving you more than just two choices of flaming or mild. The chicken comes in tender and slider size, and each piece is seasoned in one of seven levels of spiciness from "no spice" to "reaper," referring to the infamous, skoville record-breaking Carolina Reaper pepper. 1. No Spice You have to eat the no-spice piece to see if the chicken is good on its own. Yes. Crispy skin juicy meat, you can taste the time taken to prepare the must. 2. Lite Mild Don't know why this is on the menu, the spice is there but it's not screaming for your attention. 3. Mild Like it says, mild. The spiciness is there but it is still comfortable and manageable even for people who think Tabasco is hot. 4. Medium A big jump from mild, the recipe uses
Carolina Reapers for all its spices. The heat is building, but not excessively tongue burning, a milkshake might work here. 5. Hot I like hot food; I was the taster of fresh habaneros at our weekly pizza parlor visit after playing softball. This was good and spicy but not like the habaneros, which would make my chest swell. This is a good hot, not blow your head off hot. 6. Extra Hot Not sure if the word extra works here, maybe fuc**** hot, keep the milkshake handy; this has reached above habanero hot. Ranch dressing works too. The chicken's flavor has a brine background, but the spice is starting to take over, it is still good though. 7. Reaper Red alert; the hottest level. Like the ones at Buffalo Wild Wings that I enjoy watching people eat and then turn red. What's hotter than effing hot? It's just spice though, not vinegary. It is the kind of hot that sneaks up on you. Your sinuses start running and your eyes water, then it hits your lips. Get another milkshake. But the spice it takes over the chicken, just another gimmic to get you into the store. All in all, I liked the Medium spice, Portland-based Aardvark Sauce hot, but not blow you head off. Go try it, they are located at 5247 Clark Ave, Lakewood, CA 90712, daveshotchicken.com
THE POO POO PLATTER: all the goodies you could want, three different levels of spice in chicken tender and slider form; fries - the fries were awesome; sides of macaroni and cheese, pickles, and their delicious coleslaw topped off the feast, If you order hot chicken, order a milkshake.

Angelo Maldonado sworn in by Assitant City Clerk Leticia Revilla. of the Long Beach Bar Association and an active member of the Los Angeles Paralegal Association. He has served this country as an Infantry Platoon Sergeant for the United States Army and was a crime intelligence analyst for the Los Angeles Police Department.

SANTA ANA-In 2015, La Mirada High’s football team began the season at 1-3 by being pummeled by St. John Bosco High 76-8 and Mater Dei High 42-7 in two of the first three games, as described by head coach Mike Moschetti. The Matadores, though, would go on to win the next 12 games, capture a CIF-Southern Section Southeast Division title and a Division IIIAA state crown. So, when the Matadores walked onto Eddie West Field at the Santa Ana Bowl last Friday night to face the top team in the nation, Moschetti knew an upset wasn’t in the cards, but that this would be an opportunity his players would cherish for a long time. On this night, it wasn’t about the final score, which went in favor of Mater Dei 58-7, leaving La Mirada sitting at 3-3. It was about the memories. “We knew this was going to get ugly, so we wanted to play everybody,” Moschetti said. “And it’s just something we do at La Mirada. Nobody will play these guys, and we’re a public school with 1,800 students and it’s just something we’ve done. I think it’s the fifth or sixth time we’ve played them. We’ve played Servite, we’ve played Bosco, we’ve played Bishop Amat. I really feel you get something out of this. It’s a good time atmosphere. It’s something these kids will remember for the rest of their lives; to say they’ve played the number one team in the country.” Moschetti continued to say that all week long and even when they got off the bus upon arrival at the Santa Ana Bowl, his players couldn’t stop talking about playing the Monarchs and that being a big time program like Mater Dei is something La Mirada is striving to be someday. The Matadores have completed their non-league portion of the schedule with a three-point loss to El Toro High and back to back setbacks to Foothill High and Mater Dei by a combined score of 92-14. And while it’s too early to predict if the Matadores will make a deep run in the playoffs or a divisional championship like the one it had in 2015, La Mirada is sure to use these first six games of the 2021 season as tune-ups for the upcoming Suburban League schedule and the playoffs. Before the kickoff, La Mirada was even more at a disadvantage because senior running back Edward Lafferre, who separated

LA MIRADA HIGH junior running back Denver Stillman tries to get some positive yardage but Mater Dei High’s Eoghan Kerry (#52) has the advantage in making a tackle in last Friday night’s Mater Dei 58-7 victory. La Mirada, which was held to minus 10 yards rushing in 30 attempts, dropped to 3-3 on the season.

his shoulder against Foothill, did not play. He leads the team with 430 yards and three rushing touchdowns and is listed week to week, according to Moschetti. In fact, the coach admitted his team is ‘really thin and really beat up’. Mater Dei scored three times within the first 7:44 on just 10 plays with Raleek Brown going in from six yards out, Elijah Brown tossing a 49-yard pass to Coper Barkate and Jordon Davison adding a three-yard score. Meanwhile, La Mirada couldn’t get anything going on offense, running 12 plays in the first quarter for 10 yards with junior quarterback Nehuel Garcia throwing an interception, which led to the second Mater Dei score. La Mirada’s defense held its ground in the second quarter against the Mater Dei reserves and got an interception from sophomore linebacker Frank Torres, who returned the ball 37 yards. Five plays later, Garcia scored from a yard out and with 6:26 left in the half, La Mirada was showing some life. But the Monarchs responded by going nearly the remainder of the half and with 9.3 seconds left, Chase Meyer kicked a 34-yard field goal. Whatever momentum the Matadores thought they might have had was wiped out
when Ajon Bryant returned the second half kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and a 31-7 lead. “It was a huge backbreaker, and we have to fix our turnover situation,” Moschetti said. “We threw a pick [and] we fumbled for a touchdown. I think it’s the third game this year we’ve given up a defensive touchdown.” “We pulled the one’s at the end of the first quarter and it was fun to watch our two’s play and have them battle,” said Mater Dei head coach Bruce Rollinson. “And then we’re always going to put our one’s back in because we only had two preseason games and a scrimmage.” Mater Dei scored three more times in the third quarter, including a 21-yard fumble return by R.J. Fineanganofo caused when Kassius Ashtiani sacked Garcia. It was the second of two
turnovers La Mirada had in the game. The fourth quarter would be played under running clock conditions. Mater Dei has now defeated the Matadores in all seven meetings dating back to 1975 by a combined score of 279-14 and even with the blowout loss, Rollinson was still concerned with La Mirada’s offense. “The offense is very creative,” Rollinson said. “Mike’s done a great job with shifts, motions, unbalance. There’s a myriad of things that you have to defend, and what I like what he does, he just tries to find mismatches. But we spent a lot of time trying to get the kids to understand what they essentially were trying to do. That was our biggest concern; their offense, which I thought they had some success. “Defensively, I thought they would blitz more,” he continued. “I thought they would stunt more. I was worried about them shifting and they didn’t shift as much. But it was a good game. I respect Mike; those kids played hard.” Rollinson, who is now in his 33rd year coaching the Monarchs, won his 319th game opposite 86 losses and two ties. Under his watch, Mater Dei has been to the CIF-SS finals 14 times, won seven CIF-SS championships, four National Championships,
Besides the youth and inexperience of the Artesia High football team this season, there are two other words that best describes the failures of the Pioneers-finishing drives. Artesia had its second straight game of some offensive production, but it resulted in another goose egg. The Pioneers had 271 yards on offense, but had consecutive red zone drives in the second quarter halted as they were blanked by Estancia High 43-0 last Thursday night at Atkins Stadium. The Pioneers have scored once in 16 quarters this season and have been shutout in consecutive games. “Yeah, but I think that’s just youth,” Olmstead said of the lost opportunities. “They haven’t
played [enough]. Catching a ball in practice is different than catching a ball in a game. I thought we did a lot of good things. There are losses where you feel like we played [awful], and then there are losses where you think we played better than we actually did. There are fixable mistakes.” Artesia punted on its first three possessions, then had a nice drive going with 3:17 remaining in the opening quarter. Starting at the Estancia 48-yard line, the hosts ran 11 plays and got the ball down to the eight-yard line before not gaining another yard on four straight plays. After the ensuing Estancia drive stalled at the Pioneer’s 37-yard line, Artesia drove down the field again, only to see
senior quarterback K’Len Williams picked off at the one-yard line by Andrew Coyotzi. That turnover led to Estancia’s fourth score of the night as it held a 29-0 halftime lead. It would add another touchdown on its opening drive of the second half before the Pioneers moved 62 yards on 14 plays before that drive was stalled at the 18-yard line. “As far as the first half goes, and parts of the second half,” I thought K’Len played great,” Olmstead said. “But you have to finish drives in high school football. There were times where we thought kicking a field goal, but at that time, we wanted to see if we can finish some drives and you can’t trade touchdowns for

and three state titles. “From here on out, these kids aren’t going to face anything near what we just faced,” Moschetti said. “Coach Rollinson and his staff did a great job; he played everybody and got his freshmen kids in there. [Our] kids wanted to do it and it’s something we’ve always done, and we got something out of this tonight.” He added that by playing the likes of a Mater Dei every season, he thinks his coaching staff can coach off film and learn a lot about the makeup of the team. Garcia completed four of 10 passes for 55 yards, but the Matadores were limited to negative 10 yards on the ground in 30 attempts. Overall, the Monarchs outgained La Mirada by over 400 yards and had 17 first downs opposed to just four. The Matadores also did not convert a third down and punted eight times. “That’s a good football team; they’ll do fine in their league,” Rollinson said. “But I think we wore them down with that interception.” La Mirada will enjoy a week off after playing six in consecutive weeks before jumping into Suburban League action at Mayfair High on Oct. 8. After that, the Matadores will host Norwalk High as the league tittle could be decided following that contest with two more weeks to go in the regular season. “Mayfair has beaten us four years in a row, so our whole focus is on trying to get over that hump,” Moschetti said. “First thing we have to do is get healthy. But we always play a tough preseason schedule because it prepares us for games in November and December. Coming out here and facing Mater Dei and facing a good Foothill team…now when you go into the playoffs and you have to go up against Mayfair, they’re not going to be wideeyed. They’ve played against the best. Nobody in the country is going to play a team as good as Mater Dei. field goals and expect to win the game. “When you get to the red zone, the field shrinks,” Olmstead later said. “When the field shrinks, you have to make plays and we didn’t make plays. But I think that’s the sign of a young team. I don’t think we’re going to be a big threat team this year, so I was really proud of those drives. We just have to finish them.” The Pioneers were led by Williams and senior running back Erin Moses for the fourth time this season with Moses picking up 101 yards on 17 carries while Williams completed eight of his first 18 passes for 88 yards and picked up another 47 yards on 14

605 LEAGUE GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Artesia continues to make a push for rare playoff berth, sweeps John Glenn BY LOREN KOPFF @LORENKOPFF ON TWITTER Since the 605 League was formed prior to the 2018-2019 school year, four of the six member schools have advanced to the CIF-Southern Section divisional playoffs. The two that haven’t met on the court this past Tuesday to begin the second round of league action with one of them hoping to stay in the hunt for the postseason. Artesia High, which has not tasted life in the playoffs since 2010, swept last place John Glenn High 25-20, 25-15, 25-9 this past Tuesday afternoon, improving to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the league. The seven victories equal the output from the 2015 and 2019 and the Lady Pioneers are on pace to have the pro-
gram’s best record since going 10-14 in that playoff season. In addition, Artesia swept a seasonseries from the Lady Eagles for the first time since 2016. “It’s still an ever building process right now,” said Artesia head coach Tommy Dube. “Confidence in our serving translates into the confidence in our hitting. We’re still continuing to work on both those items of serving effectively, which will translate to our attack.” Early in the match, Glenn (1-12, 0-6) was primed to upset Artesia, or at the very least, win a set in league for just the second time this season. The Lady Eagles scored the first three points of the first set and held leads of 8-3 and 10-6 before Artesia woke up and went to work. A kill from junior outside hitter An-
Pico Rivera Cheer and Football Back in Action
PLAYING: Kids at Rivera Park, the Dons and Donnas is open to 6-14 year olds; and kids from other cities that don’t have a San Gabriel Valley Jr. All-American Franchise. BY EILEEN OSUNA As Pico Rivera resident Cynthia Carlos sat between two fields at Rivera Park watching her children, a son in football and daughter in cheer practice, she thought about how good it felt to be back. Their program, the Pico Rivera Dons and Donnas, shut down during COVID. “They’re fighting for us to keep the program going, putting in rules in and regulations and stuff because of COVID,” Carlos said. “I love the fact that they’re trying to keep things going normally for the kids.” Other than the pandemic-related hiatus, Carlos’ 12-year-old has played football every year since he was 7-years-old and now her daughter has joined the Dons and Donnas family through cheer. The Dons and Donnas, founded in the 1970s, is open to children between the ages of 6 to 14 in Pico Rivera and other cities that don’t have a Franchise. While families and coaches are glad to be back, they still worry about COVID.
“I just feel that, you know, we work really hard for our routines and put a lot of effort and money and fundraising, and it’s just a fear that it would be for nothing if it gets shut down,” Donnas cheer coach Gina Salinas said. Salinas also said it’s been difficult raising funds for the program. Even with the food nights, clothes drives and other fundraisers they hold, it’s still not enough. “It’s expensive, especially cheer, with uniforms, registration and competition fees,” Salinas said. “The parents have to do it on their own and right now with parents financially struggling it’s been rough.” Cheerleading fees are about $300 and football fees range from $185 for flag football to $200 for tackle football, according to a post on the organization’s Facebook page. Long time Pico Rivera resident Terry Palazuelos, who has her son in football, said the program “keeps them [children] out of trouble, keeps them straight. I love giving back to the community and kids."

drea Arzate, who would be a thorn in Glenn’s side throughout the match, posted her first kill, leading to senior middle blocker Melissa Lopez serving four straight points to give Artesia its first lead at 11-10. The set would feature seven ties and five lead changes, the last coming when Glenn was called for a rotation violation, putting the visitors in front 20-19. Arzate’s sixth kill of the set gave the Lady Pioneers their largest lead of the set at 23-20. Artesia would have a dozen kills and five aces in the set while Glenn had 11 kills and four aces after one. “I think it’s the immaturity of the team, having last year off as well,” Dube said of the slow start. “Just that killer instinct is something that we’re still working on. Glenn is a formative serving team, so we just needed to make sure we move.” Glenn tried to stay close to Artesia in the first few minutes of the second set, but when senior defensive specialist Stephanie Avina served consecutive aces, Artesia had a 6-4 lead. An ace from Glenn sophomore setter Abbey Zavala would tie the set at 6-6, but Artesia responded with four straight points and never looked back. Arzate continued to hurt the Lady Eagles with five more kills in the set and finished with a match-high 16 along with five aces. She, along with junior outside hitter Alexis Brazil (10 kills, nine aces) are becoming another offensive tandem the rest of the league should not sleep on. “Andrea has definitely been one of our key outside hitters, and when she’s on, she plays phenomenal,” Dube said. “She puts the ball where she wants to put the ball, and with [senior setter] Kira’s [Magdaleno] setting and the setup of that, that’s where it all starts with.” Another key component to the win over Glenn was Avina, who was inserted

into the match to begin the second set and immediately contributed with five of the 11 aces the team would get. “We just needed a change of pace,” Dube said. “Rylee [Asumbrado] is a freshman; the other defensive specialist that we have on the team. So, I felt that we got burned too many times. Stephanie, as a junior, came in with a little bit more maturity and really stepped it up. So, I kept her in, then also I wanted to replenish Rylee as we come in to foster in of her youth.” With the score 7-4 in the third set, a serve into the net allowed Brazil to reel off six straight points to put the match away. Later in the set, Arzate would serve six consecutive points as well. Those two accounted for all but seven kills the Lady Pioneers would collect as the team will host league-leading Cerritos High today. The Lady Dons improved to 20-3 with a four-set win over Oxford Academy this past Tuesday. Artesia will then travel to Oxford Academy on Tuesday. “I think [it will take] just focusing on playing ourselves more than playing our opponent,” Dube said of the final two weeks of the regular season. “Unfortunately, the girls are still coming out of not having that year of playing last year. So, that little bit of a break is more playing against ourselves than it is the other team.” Junior outside hitter Kaylani Moncada paced Glenn, as she has done all season, with six kills, all coming in the first set, while sophomore opposite hitter Janessa Leal and senior middle blocker Gabriela Ortega added five and four kills respectively. Glenn, which will miss the postseason for the 11th straight season, visits Whitney High today and entertains Pioneer High on Tuesday.

MEGATAXERS from page 1 rice. If the plan is for ten years, plant trees. If the plan is for one hundred years, educate children.” Pasadena Unified School District, Measure O Knowledge is a good thing, but nothing compared to character. Stephen English, Esq., along with Molly Munger and Connie Rice, all deserve honorable mention for their exemplary work in Godinez v. Davis. The lawsuit involved a new funding system for the construction and modernization of public schools, especially to relieve overcrowding in urban schools. Much like Jeff Mardersosian, Esq., they are formidable advocates for students. However, just when the first tax measure appeared to be channeled through residents, the process took a turn. The lawyers During the June 25, 2020 PUSD regular board meeting, the Board approved agreements with Megataxer law firms including Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Rudd and Romo; Dannis Woliver Kelley; the Law Offices of Jeff Carl Marderosian; Mundel, Odlum & Haws, LLP; the Shimmof Law Corporation, and Garcia Hernandez & Sawhney who included the exhibit for processing immigrant documentation. Bonifacio Garcia’s contract was included in the exhibit for processing immigrant documentation. The Resolution and Measure After signing agreements with the Megataxer law firms, the PUSD Board held a “special meeting” at 8:00 pm that night. The agenda had three bond proposals: issue school bonds for $360 million, $516 million, and $688 million. The official meeting minutes show the Board passed two: one for $360 million, Resolution 2574; and another for $516 million, Resolution 2575; according to
NEWS from page 10 carries. Moses also led the defense with six tackles. In comparison, the Eagles gained 389 yards on the night with quarterback Cameron Knickerbocker completing 10 of 12 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns, and Noah Aires picking up 99 yards on seven carries and a pair of touchdowns. “If you don’t catch the ball…guys had opportunities,” Olmstead said of his offense. “I think in the first half alone, we dropped four balls, and they were all good throws that K’Len put right on them. We’re not going to make big plays this year. We’re going to have to throw hitches, we’re going to have to throw slants, we’re going to have to make those easy throws and play catch, and we didn’t do that.” Artesia will travel a short distance tonight to face Valley Christian High in the team’s fourth non-league game with one more to come before 605 League play begins. The Defenders enter the contest at 3-1 and are coming off a 35-21 win at Ontario Christian High on Sept. 17. V.C. has had one game cancelled while the Pioneers have had two cancelled. Since its openingseason loss to St. Paul High, V.C. has outscored its next three opponents by a combined score of 106-28 with one shutout. “We haven’t seen them a whole lot,” Olmstead said. “We saw them in passing league, but [in] passing league, we don’t really value a ton. But it will be a fun game. It’s crosstown, so we don’t have to travel very far. And we’re playing better and we have stuff to build on.” In other area football action, with games subject to be cancelled because of the Covid situation or moved to another date after time of press, Cerritos High, with its 2-3 record, visited St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy (5-1) on Sept. 30. The Dons are coming off their bye and last time out,
The statement showing "bonds at legal rates" and "bonds are outstanding," violations of Government and Education Code.
the minutes, the $360 million bond passed 7-0; the second 5 to 2. Education Code Section 15266 requires a two-thirds vote of the Board. But the documents show the Board processed the $516 million tax measure. The $360 million measure never made it. The documents also show that municipal advisors Dale Scott & Co., and the law firm of Stradling Yocca Carlon & Rauth were present at the meeting. The text of the tax measures gave the Board the option of authorizing $360 million or $516 million in bonds “at legal rates.” The presumption is that “at legal rates” means “at legal interest rates.” Recalling Government Code 15272, the interest rate must be stated. The text differed, allowing the Board to impose a tax of $30 per $100,000 of assessed value on real property or $45 per $100,000 of assessed value on real property. Based thereon, real property tax revenue would be raising revenue equivalent $19.5 Million annually or $28.5 Million annually. The tax would last “as long as bonds are outstanding”. The duration of the tax is not disclosed, concealed by the use of the words “while bonds are outstanding;” two additional violations of Government Code 15272 and Education Code 13119 Looking at the tax rate statement for the measure for $516 million, the duration of the tax is 2027-‘28 until 2048-’49; including principal and interest, the bond is
expected to cost taxpayers $798 million; PUSD has just over 17,000 students in public school. Voter Information Guide is not the Ballot. The voter information pamphlet is not the actual ballot used at the time of voting. The Ballot Label did not comply with Education Code section 15272 (including the full statement required by law) and Elections Code section 13119 (rate and duration of tax). The ballot label did not even disclose the rate of interest. Just when the tax appeared to be prompted by residents, well, as stated, things took a turn. What is interesting is that the “2020 PUSD Bond Committee” shows Jonathan S. Fuhrman as the Treasurer, but no Controlling Officeholder, Candidate, State Measure Proponent, or Responsible Officer of Sponsor. What is also fascinating is the list of contributors, who gave nearly $130,000. •Wendy Munger threw in $5,000 •Jane “Malcolm in the Middle” Kaczmarek coughed up $5,000. •Flewelling & Moody, $10,000 •NIC Partners, Inc., $2,500. •LCC3 Construction Services, Rancho Cucamonga, $5,000. •PBK, Inc., Architects, Ontario, California, $5,000. •WLC, Architects $5,000. •Element Consulting, Construction Management, $5,000.
•PJHM Architects, $20,000. •PBWS Architects, $3,500. •Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Romo & Rudd, $8,775. •Kitchell, Inc. $5,000. •Moving Forward California, c/o Gould & Orellano, $2,500. •United Teachers of Pasadena $2,500 •C.W Driver $5,000. •NAC Architecture $2,000. •Jerry Kohl, Philanthropist, $5,000. •Stephen English, Esq., $2,500. •Joan Payden, Chief Financial Analyst, Catholic Investment Services, $9,000. The bond passed in November 2020, despite the multiple violations of the Government and Education Code. And the Megataxers made millions. was crushed by Troy High 49-6 on Sept. 17. While senior quarterback David Sagun has completed 32 of 53 passes for 327 yards and one touchdown, two other players have combined to go 12 of 32 for 39 yards. Senior Mateo Martinez, normally a wide receiver, leads the ground attack with 135 yards on 25 touches. He’s also the top receiver with 14 catches for 109 yards. The Warriors, who began the season with four straight wins before falling to St. Anthony High 43-25, crushed Gardena High 63-0 last Friday. Quarterback Dieter Barr is a dual threat, passing for 904 yards with 18 touchdowns and just one interception while gaining 174 yards on 27 carries. The leading rusher is Dejour Menefee (34 carries, 426 yards, five touchdowns) while Barr has many options to go to in Menefee (24 receptions, 300 yards, four touchdowns), Nate Frazier (12 receptions, 169 yards, five touchdowns), Geoffrey Brown (12 receptions, 151 yards, one touchdown)), Jordan Shaw (10 receptions, 147 yards, three touchdowns). Gahr High (0-3) @ Downey High (4-1)This one could get ugly very early and very fast as the Gladiators have not scored a point this season while having to cancel an Aug. 20 home game against Mayfair High and a Sept. 3 game at Heritage Christian High. Downey has won four straight including a 25-14 decision against Hart High last Friday. The Vikings have scored 156 points and quarterback Aiden Chiles has already completed 67 of 92 passes for 1,109 yards and nine touchdowns. He (28 carries, 295 yards, three touchdowns) and Antonio Ruiz (37 carries, 289 yards, five touchdowns) lead the running attack while Isaiah Blair, Ian Hernandez and Tryse Redford have combined to catch 60 passes for 932 yards with 11 touchdowns. Covina High (3-2) @ John Glenn High (2-3)-The Eagles lost a high-scoring af-
fair to Hawthorne High last Friday, 48-34, for their third straight loss. While they are primarily a one-man show with senior running back Iona Young, they hope to even their mark before facing a tougher opponent in Garden Grove High on Oct. 8. Covina, which blanked Sierra Vista High 47-0 on Sept. 23, has scored 127 points in its three wins while allowing 67 points. But in the two losses, it has been outscored 71-7. Quarterback Jake Duronslet, a freshman, has already completed 53 passes in 83 attempts for 827 yards and 11 touchdowns while Rey Fierro leads the ground game with 48 carries for 310 yards and four scores. Jordan Rodriguez is the top receiver with 15 catches for 290 yards and four touchdowns. Bellflower High (1-3) @ Norwalk High (4-2)-The Lancers saw their four-game winning streak snapped by El Rancho High in a 34-7 loss last Friday night. The lone score came in the second quarter on a twoyard run from junior running back David Herrera. This is the Suburban League opener for both with the Buccaneers coming in on a three-game losing streak, including a 49-8 loss to Arroyo High last Friday night. In its three losses, Bellflower has been outscored 124-22. Quarterback Adonis Thomas has completed 31 of 76 passes for 400 yards and four touchdowns with three interceptions while Tyler Dunn (38 carries, 170 yards, one touchdown), Isaac Aninyei (36 carries, 112 yards), Chad Ballard (12 receptions, 116 yards, one touchdown) and Christian Fargas (eight receptions, 144 yards, two touchdowns) are the other offensive threats. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Cerritos, coming off an impressive performance in the Pacifica Tournament last Saturday, winning all five matches including a 25-14, 25-10 win against Fountain Valley High for the championship, entered
today’s match at Artesia at 20-3 overall and 6-0 in the 605 League. The Lady Dons knocked off second place Oxford Academy in four sets this past Tuesday and need two more wins to clinch at least a share of the league title. They will also host Whitney High on Tuesday. Gahr entered this past Tuesday’s home match with Paramount High at 7-9 overall and 2-2 in the San Gabriel Valley League. The Lady Gladiators hosted Downey on Sept. 30 and will visit Dominguez High and Lynwood High on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. La Mirada High, which began the season with 11 straight losses, has turned it around the past two weeks to enter its Sept. 30 match at Norwalk with a mark of 8-16 overall and 3-1 in the Suburban League. The Lady Matadores travel to Mayfair High on Tuesday and Bellflower on Thursday. Norwalk entered this past Tuesday’s match against first place Mayfair with a 6-7 overall mark and 1-2 in the Suburban League as the Lady Lancers will go to Bellflower on Tuesday and Mayfair again on Thursday. Through the first half of Olympic League play, V.C. has split four matches, including a 20-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 7-15 loss to Whittier Christian High this past Tuesday. The Lady Defenders (1511 overall) went to Maranatha High on Sept. 30 and will entertain Village Christian High on Tuesday. Village Christian is ranked fifth in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 and 2 poll while Whittier Christian is ranked third in Division 3. Whitney dropped to 4-16 overall and 1-3 in the 605 League after a 25-19, 25-23, 26-24 loss to Oxford Academy last Friday. The Lady Wildcats were scheduled to play Pioneer High on the road this past Tuesday and will host last place Glenn today.

are barely hanging on by a thread,” said Gabriel. “Outdoor dining offers a critical lifeline that can help local restaurants keep their doors open during these challenging times. Our bills will provide much-needed flexibility so that restaurants can safely expand outdoor dining and continue to serve the communities they call home. We have made great progress in addressing the pandemic, but we must do more to help these beloved small businesses.” The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated small businesses across the state— particularly in the restaurant industry. During the first three months of the pandemic alone, the restaurant and food service industry lost around $120 billion in sales, and the National Restaurant Association reported 2.5 million jobs lost in 2020. Many proprietors say that a rebound will take 2-3 years. Outdoor dining has become an essential and enjoyable part of going to restaurants and bars across the state,” said Senator Wiener. “We need to do everything we can to help small businesses—particularly in the hospitality industry—recover from the economic challenges posed by COVID-19. Expanding outdoor dining is a no-brainer, and I am proud to have worked with Assemblymember Gabriel to ensure that it’s here to stay.” “The restaurant industry has been hit hard by the pandemic. With indoor dining rooms still closed in most places, outdoor dining has become an important lifeline for restaurants,” stated Madelyn Alfano, Immediate Past Chair of the California Restaurant Association Board of Directors and owner of Maria’s Italian Kitchen, a neighborhood Italian restaurant. “AB 61 will help to address issues restaurants face as we have created outdoor spaces to
continue to serve our customers. Nothing is more important to me than the safety of our customers and the ability to continue to provide delicious meals for my community.” “These two bills should pass, but we must do more,” saud Cerritos Councilman Frank Yokoyama. “Just like across the state, the pandemic has devastated our Cerritos restaurants. Compounding the problem, third-party food delivery service fees are price gouging our Cerritos restaurants. Numerous cities across the country have capped third-party delivery service fees to help their local restaurants during the pandemic. I tried to likewise help Cerritos restaurants by capping delivery service fees, but the other Cerritos councilmembers, Chuong Vo, Bruce Barrows, and Naresh Solanki, won’t help Cerritos restaurants during the pandemic.”

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on October 12, 2021, at 7 p.m., the City of La Mirada will conduct a public hearing to receive input from the community regarding the redrawing of election district boundaries. The hearing will be held at La Mirada City Hall’s City Council Chambers, 13700 La Mirada Boulevard, La Mirada, California 90638. Every ten years, districts must be redrawn so that each district is substantially equal in population. This process, called redistricting, is important in ensuring that each City Councilmember represents about the same number of constituents. In La Mirada, the City Council is responsible for drawing council districts. Redistricting is done using U.S. Census data, and the redistricting process must be completed by December 15, 2021. To the extent practicable, district lines will be adopted using the following criteria: (1) geographically contiguous districts (each city council district should share a common border with the next), (2) the geographic integrity of local neighborhoods or communities shall be respected in a manner that minimizes its division, (3) geographic integrity of a city shall be respected in a manner that minimizes its division, (4) easily identifiable boundaries that follow natural or artificial barriers (rivers, streets, highways, rail lines, etc.), and (5) lines shall be drawn to encourage geographic compactness. In addition, boundaries shall not be drawn for purposes of favoring or discriminating against a political party. During the public hearing, the City Council will seek input in selecting the next district map for our City Council. You have an opportunity to share with the City Council how you think district boundaries should be drawn to best represent your community. You can contact the City Clerk at (562) 943-0131 to find out more about how the process works. Additional information is on the City’s website at www.cityoflamirada.org. All interested persons will be given an opportunity to comment on this item at the public hearing. In addition, written comments may be submitted to the City prior to the hearing, mailed to 13700 La Mirada Blvd., La Mirada, California 90638, Attention: City Clerk. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 730-2727 or visit this Internet Web site www.servicelinkASAP.com, using the file number assigned to this case 2021-01343. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an "eligible tenant buyer," you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.
