The design is an experiment of symbolic spatial distribution. For centuries, we've believed that facial expressions mirror our inner most emotions. But it may be far from the truth. "House of Actress" is a groovy mask flaring out every moment. "House of woman" is slice of her life which everybody desire to peek. "Home of Heart" like a diary where you can deal your emotions. "

02 Interpretation of Reality

The Whispering Church I n d i v i d u a l Wo r k TKU 2018 Spring Thesis Design Supervisor:Chiaju,Lin

“The city didn’t lie. She told you that life is unpredictable from the word go.”—Lolita Hu (Melancholy of the City) ROKUJYODORI is different by day and by night, just as human nature is full of strong contrasts. It can’t be “reality” when you see it at only one time. The architecture in this area doesn’t have direct value. What is seen is different for each person, and what you realise restructures your own world. You may near the reality and develop an understanding if you make the effort .

Prototype of Rokujydori When writing, the content is not just about what happens to us, but how we feel. We sometimes describe these emotions through the sensation of space. For example, loneliness is like seeing many doors around you, but nobody wants to open one. Contempt is like you are standing in a high place, looking down on someone. Space is like emotions, a soft event covered by layers of veils. Space doesn’t have a model answer. There are different interpretations of reality for different people. Reality has various forms. I choose a site in Rokjuydori, near Linsen North Road. In 1912, it become a brownstone residence for an administrator. In 1951, the tourism industry was staring to develop, as were the bar and sex industries. Since the 1997 economic recession, Rokujydori has become an exotic area. It is full of pubs, clubs, hotels, izakaya and art cultural activities. There are also many apartments. Everything gets mixed up in this area. Although Rokujydori seems to be degenerating, there is a sacred church located in the lane. The church represents various things. It can make people feel guilty, or feel like they are being rescued. It could be a place for communication, or nothing at all. I wrote four stories about Rokjuydori, trying to figure out this complex lane. You might see a dark tunnel, a secret entrance, street lights, display windows, and so on. Rokjuydori's characteristics could be frostiness, glacial beauty, warmth or enthusiasm. The concept of time could be stagnating, repeating, long or short. You get what you desire.

Interpretation of the church

I started thinking about the possibilities that a picture creates. You can’t see the picture as a whole through only one perspective. It can’t be completely true when you see only one side. There is a contradiction between plans and elevations. I try to blur reality and the imagination through relativity, distance, cutting and symbolisation to show a disordered rhythm of feelings.

In their lifetime, everyone is lonely. It isn’t rare to encounter love or sex, it’s rare to encounter understanding. Our moods keep changing: now crazy, now rational. Now everything is blurry, and now it is clear. Things shouldn’t be either black or white, but grey. It might be diversity, uncertainty, flexibility or change. However, people can engage in a dialogue in different times and spaces, or resonate with somebody they have never met. I hope that users can find what they desire.

Life Container I started to think about the kind of church this is. There might be closed space and a curved corridor, or other features which are undefined. In the whispering church, you could choose to stay or escape. You can peep and probe. Everyone is a Flâneur. You try to observe the unpredictable situation by yourself. The space becomes a life container which is influenced by different variables, and you try to find the things which are closest to your heart.

“Hello! Nice to meet you." "Hi! Where do you come from?" We came from different places. However, we ran into each other here. If I can, I want to make this moment eternal. Chenggong Public Housing is situated in a prosperous area in Taipei. However, it seems like a lonely island in the city. People living in thep housing seldom go out to interact with others because of disabilities and the lack of appropriate facilities in the community. Moreover, people who live in the city seldom go to Chenggong Traditional Market because it only serves the local community. It’s as though these two groups of people are from different worlds. Therefore, I want to create a new market and plaza where people can connect with each other easily, opening the gate to the island.

The strong image of Dunhua South Road's Green Tunnel is an important element in my design. These trees guide people to the plaza and the market. The tunnel also connects the community to Taipei City. Then, the closed gate of this lonely island will be open to the city. People can easily reach others again. Let's turn the moment into an eternal experience!

Connection Between Visitor and Localism Public transportation around Chengong public housing is very convenient. People can easily reach the housing and the traditional market. In addition, there are many schools and green areas nearby. There are both elderly residents and young people around the site. Therefore, I think Chengong public housing and Chengong traditional market have potential to become a prosperous area where there are many activities. After surveying the site, I recorded the local activities and added new ones. Trying to link the visitors and the locals, I created three directions and imagined a story. First, the x-axis tries to link the residents and visitors. For example, the children's playground, elderly residents’ leisure area and traditional market are for the residents who live in the community. The dynamic square and the creative/holiday market are for visitors. I mixed them to encourage the different groups to encounter each other by chance. The y-axis tries to connect the residents in the community so that they meet their neighbours more often. Finally, the z-axis features many squares and atrium spaces to connect the plaza and the market, so that people can see different activities no matter where they are.

Many different areas help to demonstrate how Chenggong Market and Plaza can be used. For instance, there are three large squares on the first floor, and three medium-sized squares and three small squares in the basement. Each square provides a site for different activities, such as sports, music, leisure, performances and so on. Some are for children, some are for young adults, and some are for the elderly. However, the functions of these spaces aren't separated clearly, so people can use the square freely and meet strangers more often. There is not only a traditional market, but also new types of creative stores and a holiday market in the basement. Local residents can use the traditional market, and people from Taipei City may be attracted by the new type of market. And if the squares host performances, this becomes an area where people gather together.

“Our declaration is to realise a kindergarten without boundaries with nature." An energised space can encourage people. Nowadays, children spend a lot of time indoors and seldom exercise. Therefore, I elongated the circulation to let children have more movement when they learning at school and break the boundary between people and nature. Also, by continuously changing the movement, children can easily see the transformation of the natural environment. This creates a kindergarten without boundaries. I elongated the circulation to let children have more movement when they learning at school and break the boundary between people and nature. You can really see that the kindergarten is without boundaries, but it is still safe for children. Parents do not have to worry about safety and security. In addition, the two circulations encircle six courtyards, so people can hold science lessons and leisure activities in this area. They can also have picnics in the courtyards at lunch time and snack time. The kindergarten brings the nature of Tamsui into every area and corner. Now, children, please leave your televisions and iPads. Let's run as much as we like and learn with nature! I hope that you can have fun in the kindergarten every day!

Unrestrained Kindergarten I think children get the most exercise when the boundary with nature has disappeared. I separated the circulation into two routes - one for adults, one for children. This is because children feel uneasiness when adults restrict them. If they have their own circulation route, it becomes their secret spot. Moreover, I added some elements to create a more unpredictable corner. I hope that they can have more fun and movement while they are learning at school. Also, the two circulations may cross over. Everybody could hold special activities in these intersecting areas. Both circulation routes feature typology which responds to the timeline and natural environment.

Detail of Audults' Circulation To address the needs of classrooms and offices, special materials and construction methods could be A A C E used. People can easily see the transformation of natural light by bamboo skin. The light is like a clock which leads people to go to certain places at certain times. After surveying the climate of Tamsui, I decided to use deep wood beams as part of the project's structure. The beams soften the light when it enters the room, making the room calming and suitable for teachers and students. According to the area and the timeline, there are also six types of constructions for the adults’ circulation route; for example, with or without a balcony, and with the earth covered or uncovered. The needs of different classrooms will be addressed through the construction and materials. Detail of Children's Circulation To address the needs of the children's playground, the rolling height changes as the function and timeline C C E E G G do. I put the pipeline underneath the floor rather than mounted on the ceiling because I think the sky is an important natural element for children. They feel freer when there is no obstruction blocking their view of the sky. According to the area and the timeline, there are also six types of construction for the children's circulation; for example, dynamic playgrounds and static playgrounds. The construction here is different from that in the adult's circulation in order to separate the two circulations. Everybody may hold special activities in these intersecting areas. “When you take me into your heart, I can see your daily life in the greenery." Dihua Street is a dilapidated area located in Taipei City. However, I can see the vitality here when I walk along the street among the local residents. They take care of each other and the relationships between them are closely interrelated. Afterwards, I wrote a “diary of greenery” to record my observations of the residents’ daily lives here. I was attracted by the vitality of the street.

After I surveyed Dihua Street’s greenery, I found that there are many different uses in mind when people arrange these plants. The different arrangements of greenery are like a diary recording the residents' daily lives. Therefore, I used the symbol of a tree to arrange different kinds of families. For example, grandparents should be on the lower floors, and the rented rooms should be on higher floors. According to the different uses, I also planted and arranged the greenery in the condominium. I hope that the people who live here can feel more comfortable, and that the neighbourhood’s relationships can be more friendly and closer.

Relinking Lifeforms

I intend to create new paths between the buildings and surroundings; a combination of larger public spaces and smaller distributed public elements; insertion of new programmes for young people from both within and outside of the site to interact with elderly people, even by chance. By doing this, I relink symbiotic lifeforms and address neglect through energies from new interactions, to improve this part of society and look toward the new lifestyles of the future. The goal is to fill Dihua condominum with vitality and friendliness just like a family.

" Inspire future imagination by walking through the track of the past." A section of the fence surrounding one of the dismissed areas that are going to constitute a modern heritage, i.e. the former Taipei Railway workshop, has been made into an observatory to the site and the process of its conversion. Not only, but also an exhibition and a spatial experience were installed finally creating a meeting point between the heritage site and the public space of the city. Instead of a fence, a metallic lattice with various opening and a folded platform was put in place. These, not only offered unobstructed visual continuities and viewpoints of different elevation, but also a series of spaces integrating information and audio-visual experiences. Indeed, a led sign integrated with the main door provided a continuous strip of information, two slopes the vantage points for taking pictures and reading about the site, and a stage with audio system the possibility for events about the historical soundscape or simply contemplating the modern remains.

" Reviving the earth gently with wild herbs." In the Taoyuan Agriculture Expo 2018, living space and agriculture mechanism were combined to create the “Greenhouse as Home” - a prototype of future home composed of five greenhouses. In 2019, “Greenhouse 2 - Grass Field” switch its focus to the indigenous herbs, exhibiting herb incorporated spaces and landscapes, land restoration mechanism and the wisdom of herbology. In “Greenhouse 2 - Grass Field”, the new type of native plant ecological landscape and restored vegetation cover on farmlands constitute an indigenous herb lab. Based on the mutualistic symbiosis of the herbs and the fields, hundreds years of herb culture in Taiwan is incorporated to build a utopia of sustainable agriculture.

Hybrid Grass Field

The two facing hills are covered with indigenous plants of all altitudes in Taiwan. Within the large area of herbaceous vegetation cover, various species of plants are densely planted together and intertwine w i t h o n e a n o t h e r, t h u s b l u r r i n g t h e boundaries between different species and further attracting new species to join. This small ecological system contains medicinal and edible herbs common in daily life and exemplifies eco friendly agriculture. It is not only a new type of landscape with native vegetation, but also an ecological paradise!

To cover the farmland with native flora, c o m m o n h e r b s s u c h a s T h re e f l o w e r Tickclover, Taiwan Bugle and Chinese Mesona are planted on the planting shelves. The restoration of native vegetation on farmlands creates suitable habitats for insects and help preserve the soil water. As a result, more nutrition are supplied to the crops, a richer ecological environment is formed, sustainability of agricultural activities and ecological system is achieved, and each farm grows into unique and charming landscapes.

Plant Tissue Culture Lab

As the native plants are largely collected and environment is devastated, the advanced technology is introduced to alter the situation. Endangered species or profit crops are meticulously grown in the sterile bottles. Plants are effectively grown from tiny tissues and eventually planted back into the soil. The plant tissue culture technology is applied to regenerate both endangered species and genetically superior profit crops, therefore could effectively enhance the productivity of farmlands and restore ecological system at the same time.

Herbs are common in Taiwanese daily life, people incorporate them in their daily cuisine for nutritious or medicinal purposes. Knowledge and experiences are passed down from generation to generation, each herb contains its unique aroma and attributes. Within the large drying hall, the wisdom of ‘herbology’ accumulated over generations is exhibited. Through the action of cooking herbs, we could observe the relationship between cooking, land, environment and human lives.

We try to design a communicative student housing that not only encouraging residents to talk to each other, but also share with each other’s life, and interactive with surrounded neighborhood—at the same time.

In this project, we tries to design communicative student housing which not only encourages residents to talk to each other, but also share each other’s lives and interact with the surrounding neighbourhood—at the same time, we wanted the housing to act as an energy self-sufficient community. Besides, We designed a housing community with layers of “terrace farms” to encourage students to learn how to be net zero users while producing food resources. Students can claim a field or fish pond to cultivate by themselves. This is to encourage residents to take opportunities to share their lives together and fill the community with vitality and friendship. “Let’s break the phenomenal wall!" The current situation at the site is similar to melting ice. In my opinion, the entrance and the route inside the site are like cracks in the ice, and the activities in this area represent energy. Now, however, the cracks and the energy are not strong enough to break the ice wall all around the site. Therefore, I try to make the conditions more powerful, hoping that the area can be full of vitality and friendliness. We identified the following as critical issues facing Toyama Heights: isolation caused by disconnection with the surroundings, alienation caused by the lack of communication between local residents, lack of population diversity, and a combination of high demand and occupancy but low density. We use techniques to re-programme the site, such as deleting, inserting and adding to the tops of buildings. We decided to place the centre here first according to the location of the buildings. Then we rerouted the site to link some spots and provide convenience, and then we worked on reprogramming to fill Toyama Heights with vitality and friendliness.
