A Dickensian Christmas at Blenheim Palace 9th November to 13th December 2013 2

hristmas at Blenheim Palace this year will be a more magical time than ever for visitors to enjoy when the Palace will be beautifully decorated for a ‘Dickensian Christmas’. The Great Hall will be adorned with grand Christmas trees decorated in candles, baubles, lanterns in traditional reds, greens and golds associated with a Victorian Christmas. Dickensian scenes will be brought to life with ‘Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe’ windows for Victorian passers-by to peer into from the blistering winter outside. Lanterns and street lamps will lead the way past the Victorian shop windows; a grocers, a candle makers and glove shop, all set within the archways of the Great Hall, decked with swathes of holly and ivy. The grand Saloon table will be set for a Christmas feast inspired by the classic Dickens story ‘A Christmas Carol’. The Victorian feast for ‘Tiny Tim’ and the Cratchit family will include roast goose, pheasant, a joint of ham, glazed carrots, chestnuts, cheery-cheeked

apples, pears and oranges, and mince pies. The fireplaces in the State Rooms will provide a warm welcome to the Palace, each beautifully dressed for the Dickensian theme by floral specialists, Springbank Flowers. Grand trees in the Long Library will be decorated with lanterns and candles inspired by the Dickensian era, and displays of giant replica Victorian Christmas cards, and excerpts from Dickens’ stories will set the scene within the library. In the Palace’s Chapel, scenes of Victorian carol singers will bring the magic of a Dickensian Christmas to life. During the festive season there are superb festive dining options with delicious festive menus in our cafés. Festive Sunday lunches in the Orangery, and Festive Afternoon Tea in the Indian Room and Champagne Bar are available to book. The wonderful Palace shops provide a variety of Christmas gifts and decorations inspired by ‘A Dickensian Christmas’, as well as traditional Christmas foods, hampers, wines and champagnes. From December, freshly cut Christmas trees will be on sale.

Ashmolean Museum Presents the Francis Bacon Henry Moore Exhibition

8

he Ashmolean opens its autumn 2013 programme with a major exhibition which brings together works by Francis Bacon (1909–1992) and Henry Moore (1898–1986). Francis Bacon Henry Moore: Flesh and Bone shows 20 paintings by Bacon alongside 20 sculptures and 20 drawings by Moore which have been borrowed from public and private collections, selected by Martin Harrison, editor of the Francis Bacon catalogue raisonné, and Richard Calvocoressi, Director of The Henry Moore Foundation. Generously supported by Pictet & Cie, Sotheby’s and the Friends of the Ashmolean, the exhibition explores themes such as the treatment of the human figure and the artists’ responses to the violence of the twentieth century. It shows surprising parallels in the work of two giants of twentiethcentury western art whose careers have rarely been linked until now. In their different mediums, Moore and Bacon created unforgettable images of the human figure. The distinctive visual languages that each artist developed over more than half a century were marked by a growing simplicity and monumentality of form. Their perspectives differed: Moore clung to a belief in humanism, while Bacon espoused a post-humanist, nihilistic view of the world. In expressing their visions of humanity, the two artists had very different approaches: Bacon working from the outside in, disintegrating and dissolving form; Moore from the inside out, pushing anatomical structure to the surface. Moore and Bacon were both born before the First World War, in

“ This is one of the most ambitious and exciting exhibitions we have mounted since we reopened in 2009. It compares the two greatest British artists of the twentieth century, and promises to be both visually thrilling and immensely thought-provoking ” Professor Christopher Brown cbe Director of the Ashmolean which Moore was just old enough to serve in the trenches – an experience that had a profound, if delayed, effect on his work. Similarly, Bacon’s consciousness of civil unrest in Ireland, where he spent part of his childhood and youth, introduced him to the presence of violence at an early

Moore and Bacon created unforgettable images of the human figure. age. In the 1930s, both artists were influenced by Surrealism, but more especially by the biomorphic forms in Picasso’s work of the period. In the Second World War, both men lived through the Blitz, Bacon as an ARP Warden, Moore as an official war artist. As war

ended, a group exhibition opened at the Lefevre Gallery in London in which Bacon showed his Three Studies for Figures, at the Base of a Crucifixion (1944), propelling him into the limelight for the first time. It is often overlooked that, in the same exhibition, Moore showed two sculptures from the 1930s and 14 wartime drawings, some of which anticipate the theme (though not the savage imagery) of Bacon’s triptych. Exhibiting together in a commercial gallery was repeated twice more in the 1960s, when Moore and Bacon were both represented by Marlborough Fine Art. These joint shows, extensively reviewed in the press, gave critics a chance to compare the artists’ radical approaches to the human figure, which were seen as complementary rather than conflicting. The two artists were united in their love of sculpture, especially that of classical antiquity, Michelangelo, and Rodin. In the early 1970s, the forms in Bacon’s paintings became increasingly sculptural. Bacon often talked about making sculpture, even enquiring on one occasion if he could take lessons from Moore. In recognition of this influence, works by Michelangelo and Rodin from the Ashmolean’s famous holdings are shown as a prelude to the exhibition.

“ Fifty years after their first joint exhibition at Marlborough Fine Art, Francis Bacon Henry Moore: Flesh and Bone places the work of these two great artists in close relation once again ” Mr Richard Calvocoressi Director of The Henry Moore Foundation

“ It’s an extremely intense exhibition, its startling juxtapositions pushing you to rethink these artists and the century that built them, and in this sense it works on its own terms, thought-provoking and sharp. But it also, I think, stands as a brilliant pendant to the Tate’s 2010 retrospective of Moore, a survey that showed his darker side, and caused in many of his doubters – I was one – an epiphany of reappraisal ” Rachel Cooke Observer

“ The art of Francis Bacon (19091992) and Henry Moore (18981986), displayed in dialogue at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford will surely make one of the most startling exhibitions of the year. Over 60 works ranging from an early concrete carving, Mask, 1929 by Moore, to Second Version of Triptych 1944, painted in 1988 by Bacon, provide this provocative and illuminating meeting of two colossi, the best-known British artists of the past century…” Marina Vaizey Guardian Saturday Review

“ Exhibiting Henry Moore and Francis Bacon side-by-side is a masterstroke as Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum sheds light on the dialogue between postwar sculpture and painting ” Jackie Wullschlager Financial Times 9

Help to Buy A helping hand Heyford Park Magazine speaks with David Bryant, Chairman of the New Homes Marketing Board, to find out more about Help to Buy – the latest low deposit mortgage scheme that has everyone talking… he Government-backed Help to Buy mortgage scheme has hardly been out of the headlines recently, especially following Chancellor George Osborne’s surprise announcement to bring the second stage of the scheme forward by three months. It’s not surprising that the initiative is attracting so much attention from all corners of the sector, as Help to Buy is truly helping people to secure their dream homes. Since the scheme launched in April this year,

Previously, only new homes were covered by the Help to Buy guarantee, which is an Equity Loan scheme and gives people the chance to buy a home worth up to £600,000 with as little as a 5% deposit. Now that the scheme has been extended, both new and second hand homes are eligible, which is great news for those who have been prevented from buying a new home due to being unable to sell their existing one. It goes without saying that more movement across the entire house building sector will

80% of the population aspire to own their own home

buy a home worth up to £600,000 with as little as a 5% deposit

10,000 people have reserved new homes and the number of first time buyers is at its highest level since 2007. Year on year, surveys regarding home ownership reveal that over 80% of the population aspire to own their own home. With this in mind, government-funded help is no doubt a welcome relief to many, giving housebuilders greater confidence to build more new homes and in turn, offering future homeowners a step onto the property ladder.

help everybody. With all of the evidence leaning towards the positive, there is no doubt that Help to Buy is helping the housing market and its customers to prosper. First time buyers are being given a helping hand to get their foot onto that very first rung of the property ladder, whilst existing homeowners are receiving an extra push towards the top of that same ladder. Long may this continue for a nation that is showing no signs of ending its love affair with home ownership.

How it works 1. Secure a new build home worth up to £600,000 with Help to Buy 2. You put down at least 5% of the property price as a deposit 3. The government will give you a 5 year interest-free loan for up to 20% of the property price 4. You need to secure a mortgage of up to 75% of the property price to cover the remainder For further information on the Help to Buy scheme at Heyford Park, please visit: www.heyfordpark.co.uk or call 01869 238238 For further information on Help to Buy please visit: www.gov.uk/affordable-home-ownership-schemes

ucie Greenwood – owner, chef and general superwoman of The Milkshed in Weston on the Green – might in fact be my idol. Actually, I am pretty sure I have a big, fat, girly food crush on her. In the formidable sea of Oxfordshire gastro pubs, it takes a brave woman (and a real true-blue foodie) to captain a different, and indeed more risky route for their eatery. Thankfully, it appears the destination is altogether more exciting. Previously known to locals as Mrs Godwin’s Ice Cream Shop, The Milkshed is North Oxfordshire’s answer to the delis, cafes and brunch bars that make certain postcodes in North London some of the most sought-after in the country. And whilst rural Oxfordshire certainly punches above its weight when it comes to fantastic places to eat, The Milkshed is something of a lone ranger when it comes to quality day-time destinations. Having recently

The Milkshed is North Oxfordshire’s answer to the delis, cafés, and brunch bars that make certain postcodes in North London some of the most sought-after in the country. moved to a small village after spending 5 years eating my way around Oxford’s city centre, I very much miss lazy Sunday mornings at my favourite café. There, I would happily work my way through a Sunday paper and a large plate of Eggs Florentine, able to forget

Monday was just around the corner. OK, admittedly I am relishing walking to my front door without fighting my way through hoards of Spanish tourists, but I do miss those quirky, independent coffee shops that are usually confined to more urban spots. Luckily for me, my move seems to have perfectly coincided with The Milkshed’s revamp. So what’s new? Whilst anyone with an OX26 postcode will probably carry a certain fondness for the colloquial charm of Mrs Godwin’s traditional Jersey offering, Lucie and her team have smacked this small café (and the ice cream itself) into the here and now. Gone is the boring Cornish clotted cream and dated mint choc chip, and in its place are vats of golden salted caramel ice cream and decadent peanut butter swirled with cherry jam; the latter, whizzed into a thick shake, felt like a grown-up sweet treat (and an unexpected hangover cure).

Restaurant Review

More exciting still is the range of light bites on offer. The smoked haddock chowder, with crispy pancetta croutons, was pleasantly refined without being fussy or losing its rustic integrity. The fluffy ricotta and banana pancakes, drizzled with honeycomb butter (what a revelation), will happily replace Eggs Florentine as my Sunday staple. Ultimate food heaven was the sticky seared chorizo, lovingly draped over a doorstop wedge of sourdough and served with sweet pickled peppers, smoked chilli jelly and a homemade aioli that was certainly not for the faint-hearted. It seems shaking up Bicester’s café culture isn’t enough for Lucie as she is now embarking on a range of monthly supper clubs for those regulars who are intrigued to see what she can do on a larger scale. That’s correct, supper clubs. Usually reserved for the bespectacled, red chino-wearing intelligentsia of Shoreditch, supper clubs have surprisingly found their way to the Cherwell Valley under Lucie’s guardianship, and I personally couldn’t be more excited. It is for all these reasons that I applaud Lucie Greenwood for her imaginative, individual and downright charming café. Keep up the good work and you never know, one of Mrs Godwin’s regulars might just slip on a pair of red chinos and join us at the next supper club.

Your Quick Gluten Guide! Wheat and gluten intolerance and sensitivity have recently become a heated topic, and for good reason, as these conditions appear to be on the rise. The reported symptoms are varied and range from fatigue, achy joints, digestive complaints and weight loss to bloating and tiredness, which make them a tricky problem to diagnose. If you suffer from any of these symptoms or suspect a gluten intolerance, be sure to see your GP for advice before removing gluten from your diet.

WHAT’S IN SEASON AUTUMN / WINTER

Cranberries Cabbage Apples

Parsnips Jerusalem artichoke

Chestnuts Pomegranate

Leeks Sprouts Clementines

What is gluten and why does it matter? Gluten is the protein found in wheat, rye, some oats and barley and is the magic ingredient that gives bread its elasticity and structure. Wheat is used in so many processed foods that it can be a difficult substance to cut out of your diet, but a growing number of people are now going gluten free and there is more demand for gluten free foods than ever before. While the exact reason for the rise in gluten sensitivity is not known, there have definitely been some major changes in the way we eat wheat that could explain it. In the last 60 years wheat has changed a great deal. Modern wheat is the result of major cross-breeding and hybridisation programmes so that it can yield bigger crops; this is not the wheat of our grandparents’ generation and as a result it can be pretty tough to digest. Another factor that could be playing into this gluten intolerance is what we’re putting in bread – modern dough uses yeast to rise the bread in quick time, and supermarket breads contain a whole host of other added ingredients (take a look at the ingredients next time and you’ll see just how many!) Before we began adding these preservatives and ingredients,

traditional bread contained just four components; flour, salt, water and a starter culture (also known as a sourdough). This bread develops over many hours before baking, and this slow rise process is what actually helps break down the proteins, making them easier to digest. Coeliac VS Intolerance Coeliac disease affects around 1 in 100 people in the UK. It is

...there have definitely been some major changes in the way we eat wheat... an autoimmune condition which causes an immune response in the body to the gluten protein, causing damage to the lining of the small intestine. This is a serious condition requiring lifelong avoidance of all foods containing gluten and gluten contaminated products. Gluten and wheat intolerances and sensitivities do not cause damage to the intestine, but this doesn’t make the symptoms any less uncomfortable. People with wheat sensitivities may be able to

tolerate ancient wheat varieties such as spelt or kamut flour which may be easier to digest. These ancient wheats are not suitable for coeliac or gluten intolerant people. What can I eat? If you have coeliac disease or are gluten intolerant, it can be daunting knowing what to eat. Luckily there are many alternatives that taste great and keep you nourished. Try brown rice flour, buckwheat flour (which makes amazing French style pancakes), gram flour, millet, quinoa and teff flour, arrowroot starch, potato starch, coconut flour, maize flour and ground almonds. Oats shouldn’t create an adverse reaction, however due to potential contamination during processing and packaging, avoid unless they say gluten free on the packet. What should I avoid? There are a few things to watch out for besides wheat. Be sure to avoid barley, rye, regular oats and ancient wheat grains such as spelt, kamut and einkorn. Check processed foods very carefully as they often contain hidden wheat and gluten.

Christmas Recipes

Gluten free Christmas pudding Serves 10

This Christmas there is no need to miss out if you are following a gluten free diet. The following Christmas pudding recipe is gluten free and refined sugar free (double bonus!) It tastes amazing. Don’t be put off by the long list of ingredients: this is an incredibly easy recipe. Everything can simply be thrown in together! Make this up to a week ahead and re-steam for 1 hour on the day it will be eaten.

1 cup/100g currants 1 cup/100g raisins ½ cup/50g sultanas ¾ cup/75g chopped prunes ½ cup/50g chopped figs Zest of 1 orange Zest of 1 lemon ½ cup/40g flaked almonds 1 grated apple (skin on) 1 tbsp ground ginger 1 tbsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground allspice 2 tbsp cold butter, grated, or coconut oil 1 tsp gluten free baking powder 1 cup/100g brown rice flour ½ cup/50g ground almonds 80ml red wine 150ml prune juice 2 large eggs, beaten Pinch of sea salt

6 easy steps 1. Soak the raisins, currants and sultanas in the wine for about an hour, until most of the liquid has been soaked up. 2. Lightly grease a large 1.5L pudding basin. 3. In a large bowl, mix together the soaked fruit along with all the remaining ingredients. Stir until well mixed. Pour into the greased pudding basin; the mixture should come up to about an inch from the top to allow room for rising. 4. Cover the top of the basin with a circle of buttered greaseproof paper, and then seal with tin foil or muslin tied with string (be sure to put a pleat in the cover to allow for expansion) over the bowl to make a lid. It’s also a good idea to make a handle out of some string tied around the basin so that it is easy to lift out after steaming. 5. Put the basin in a large saucepan and fill to just under half way up the basin with water. Bring to the boil, put a lid on the pan and reduce to a simmer. This pudding needs to simmer away for four hours, be sure to keep an eye on the water level and to top up if needed. 6. After 4 hours, remove carefully from the pan and set aside to cool. Pop it in a cool dark place until you’re ready to re-heat on Christmas day. To re-heat, simply cover with fresh muslin/foil and steam in the same way for another hour. Cool slightly and turn out to serve.

Save time this Christmas with no-bake mince pies!

Three ways with sprouts!

Makes 12

The humble brussel sprout, we either love it or hate it. But gone are the days of soggy overcooked sprouts at the Christmas dinner table, try one of these recipes and make the sprout a centre piece of your table!

If, like me, you’re a last minute kind of girl, then worry no more! This super quick, no-bake version of mince pies takes just minutes to make and tastes great.

Ingredients For the pastry 4 medjool dates (or 8 soft, regular dates) 2 dried figs (look for soft ones) ¼ cup of walnuts 1¼ cups of ground almonds A pinch of sea salt For the filling ½ cup of currants ½ cup of raisins ¼ cup of sultanas Zest of 1 lemon and 1 orange ¼ cup of flaked almonds 2 tbsp prune juice ¼ tsp each of ginger and mixed spice ½ tsp ground cinnamon 1 pear, puréed (skin on) 34

Ingredients

5 easy steps 1. Mix all the filling ingredients together and set aside for the flavours to develop while you make the pastry. 2. Blitz the pastry ingredients together in a food processor until the mixture comes together into a kind of dough. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll into balls. 3. Take a fairy cake tin and press each piece into the tin to line the individual tins. 4. Divide the filling between each pastry case.

1. Jewelled sprout salad Finely shred the sprouts and mix with the seeds of one pomegranate, a handful of chopped walnuts, sea salt, pepper, lemon juice and olive oil to taste. Also nice topped with cubed Gouda cheese.

2. Steamed sprouts with garlic dressing Lightly steam the sprouts until just cooked, and dress while warm with lemon zest, juice, olive oil and crushed garlic.

3. Herby roasted sprouts with chestnuts Roast the sprouts in a little butter and olive oil along with some shelled chestnuts and a couple of sprigs of thyme. Season with sea salt and black pepper.

5. Chill to firm up before transferring to a plate. Photography by Isabel Daman

Ditch and Switch ant to look your best in your little black dress? This 7 day flat tummy plan is effective, and the best part is there is no calorie counting or strict meal plans. This is not an intense weight loss routine or cleanse, but a way to introduce healthier subtle changes that can really make a difference. Each tip and dietary suggestion should be maintained through the remainder of the week for best results. Some of these tips are so easy to do they may well become a regular part of your routine!

The 7 day party countdown! 7 days to go Ok, I’m not asking you to ditch anything today, but rather to switch up your morning routine. Each morning before you shower spend a few minutes to gently brush your body with a natural bristle brush. Brush lightly in long sweeping movements in the direction towards your heart. This stimulates circulation to help combat cellulite and removes dead skin for a healthy glowing complexion.

6 days to go Ditch the white flour, bread and pasta and switch to rice, quinoa, buckwheat and rye bread. The high gluten and sugar content in refined flour products can cause havoc with our digestion leading to bloating. Also replace fizzy drinks with water and slices of lemon and cucumber and herbal teas such as peppermint, dandelion, chamomile and fennel.

5 days to go

Blitz up

4 days to go

Ditch sugary and refined breakfast cereals and toast and start your day with a morning smoothie. Adding a breakfast smoothie to your routine will help keep you satisfied and take the extra workload off your digestive system. Not only that, it is full of anti-inflammatory foods and enzymes that help keep your tummy happy! Have this each morning for the rest of the countdown (and beyond!)

½ papaya or pineapple ¼ cucumber ½ cup of melon, diced 1 handful of ice 1 cup of organic plain yoghurt, coconut yoghurt or almond milk 1 tbsp almond butter or hemp seeds 1 tbsp ground flax 4 mint leaves

It’s time to switch and ditch those snacks and drinks!! Ditch chocolate bars and crisps and switch for healthier, stomach-friendly foods such as dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa solids), pumpkin seeds, apples and celery filled with a little nut butter. Replace your regular morning tea or coffee with green tea and lemon which is detoxing and anti-inflammatory. (It’s also very refreshing!)

3 days to go

2 days to go

1 day to go

Include a daily probiotic supplement or a daily cup of natural yoghurt - ditch flavoured yoghurts which are full of sugar and switch to unsweetened (preferably organic). Sweeten yourself with a little local honey instead.

Ditch rushing your meals and switch to mindful eating! Chewing food fully and slowly helps avoid ingesting air which can cause bloating and also helps to prevent over eating. Stress is another huge contributor to bloating so take some time out for yourself today. Over the next few days, try doing 5 minutes of breathing exercises daily to help de-stress.

Ditch the late nights and be sure to get some quality hours of sleep. For a happier tummy, try to eat before 7pm and get to bed before 10.30pm. Enjoy a liquid dinner tonight to ease the load on your digestion before bed time. A fibre rich vegetable soup is a good option.

Final Routine he big day is here! Don’t worry, there is no need to starve or stress out. Follow this simple plan for today and not only will you look great in your little black dress, you will feel refreshed, energised and ready to go!

Morning Have a glass of warm water with fresh lemon upon waking. This stimulates digestion and helps give your liver a boost, a great option if there will be alcohol and heavy food tonight. Enjoy your morning smoothie and take a moment to do some breathing exercises before you start the day.

Mid-afternoon Have a cup of calming peppermint or fennel tea. For an energy boost at snack time, enjoy some pumpkin seeds and a little dark chocolate (raw refined sugar free chocolate is the best if you can get it. If not be sure it’s at least 70% cocoa solids).

This routine is a great way to look your best without harming your system or leaving you feeling drained on the big day. Remember, how you feel is just as important as how you look! Be sure you get enough nutrition, rest and movement during this routine for best results.

Mid-morning Enjoy a cup of dandelion tea. Dandelion tea is great for the liver and helps to prevent excess water retention. For a tasty snack, try some fresh sliced papaya drizzled with lime juice.

Lunch Be sure to have a substantial meal to keep you going into the late hours, but one that is also gentle on your digestion. Include a protein, a salad and a soup. Good protein would be wild salmon, free range eggs or quinoa. Ditch those creamy soups and switch to lighter vegetable broths which are easier to digest.

HEALTH CLINIC RIGHT ON YOUR DOORSTEP

The Old Blacksmiths Shop on Bletchingdon village green stood empty for a number of years until Osteopath, Monica Franke, took the opportunity to start her own complementary healthcare clinic, a minute’s walk from her home.

36

he clinic offers Osteopathy, Cranial Osteopathy (babies, children and adults), Sports Injuries – treatment and performance management, Massage – relaxation and remedial, Nutrition, Acupuncture, Foot Health Care, Orthotics by Feet 24 7, Hypnotherapy, CBT counselling, Personal Training at a local private gym and Pilates. “It is a real privilege to be part of the history of this beautiful and iconic building. It’s like a tardis – looking tiny from the outside, but opening up into a warm, calm space which is perfect for a wide range of therapies. My vision for the clinic is to provide a range of therapies with practitioners who are experienced, empathetic and know how to make effective use

of current research within a number of disciplines. We support the advice given by GP’s and nurses but aim to provide another dimension of care.” Monica’s passion for making complementary health care accessible is evident when visiting the Clinic on the Green. Empowering people by providing information about different therapies available, and having access to a wide range of therapists, patients can feel free and relaxed to ask questions or discuss health-related issues. With such passion, the Clinic on the Green offers workshops to schools, corporations and other private or public groups to explore ways in which complementary healthcare can benefit staff, children or group members in their day-to-day life.

Monica Franke, Osteopath Monica explains “We try to keep our work as collaborative as possible, offering workshops which present helpful information about a handful of therapies”, for example: • Sports Injuries – common injuries in school sports will be discussed, along with a number of possible ways to manage them. • Pilates for Performance – high level core activation and functional movement skills. • Nutrition – an easy ‘how-to’ on the importance of eating well to maintain healthy skin, athletic performance, brain function and fulfil academic demands. • Stress and Anxiety – can be present in many ways and can affect people of all ages; our hypnotherapist, Linda and cranial osteopath, Angela, give advice on how to navigate through difficult times and overcome any associated symptoms.

Other workshops may cover: Golfing – the physical and mental challenges posed and how to optimise performance Osteoarthritis – massage, acupuncture, taping, exercise and nutritional advice. Corporate Drain – nutrition, hypnotherapy and massage. The message here is that you don’t have to handle the physical and mental pressure day-in, dayout. This workshop helps you to become supported and nourished in body, mind and soul, and ultimately to find the quality of life you so desire. Since opening in May of this year, word has spread and Clinic on the Green has been attracting patients and clients from all around this part of Oxfordshire and as wide as Stow-on-the-Wold and Aylesbury. Reflecting on the testimonials the clinic has received, we can see why.

“ Monica was recommended to me by a

doctor after a long course of physiotherapy failed to make improvements to my regular back problem. One session with Monica got my back realigned, freed my muscles and the pain was gone. I was amazed at this, given the pain and severity of my condition. Due to the amount of physical work I do, as soon as I feel my back going out of alignment it gives me great confidence that Monica is available. My back is better than it has been in years and the treatments needed are far less frequent. I can’t recommend Monica highly enough. A. Hancer

LOVE IS IN THE AIR Heyford Park’s historical fountain of knowledge, Don Todd, shares with us some of the fondest memories of ex-US airmen and the historical significance Heyford Park holds.

Heyford Park possesses a strong historical significance, playing a vital role as an air base to various operations throughout the 20th Century.

he base was used as an R.A.F. station during World War II, partaking in 1,000 bomber raids over Germany throughout 1942. In addition to this, from 1950 until its eventual closure in 1994, the base was home to the American Air Force. From 1950 – 1965, the base was used for Strategic Air Command. During this time, as a means of entertaining the troops, it was common for girls to be bussed in from surrounding villages and often as far away as Coventry. Girls would be invited to attend dances held in the Airmen’s Club, and for a number of the Americans these

dances proved to be much more than just a night of entertainment, as several met their future wives at these events. As Heyford Park enters its new era, many of the now married couples and their children have since been back to Heyford Park to revisit the place where it all began, leaving messages in the ever-growing American Visitors’ Book, which we have taken some quotes from. Many of these marriages came about when the 20th Tactical Fighter Wing was stationed here, and since closure in 1994 we have had hundreds of American visitors bringing their wives and families with them. It is wonderful to hear that so many of ‘The Jive’

the returning airmen are insistent that they regard their assignment at Upper Heyford as the best assignment of their careers. Visitors to the site are often relatives of those who used to be based here, with people even getting in touch as they search for long-lost relatives and friends for help in being able to reconnect with them. One recent visit was from the children of an ex-rear gunner who flew a Wellington Bomber, who told the story of their father who was part of an aborted mission to bomb

Visitors to the site are often relatives of those who used to be based here... Hamburg. They said their father, despite all of the planes being shot down, was the sole survivor of the mission as he was the only one who did not try to escape. He remained on the site until it was safe to flee. There was in fact one other survivor from the same mission, Pilot F. Lowe, who returned after the war had ended. As more people make contact with the base and numbers of visitors continue increasing, so too does the collection of stories depicting the historical value of Heyford Park and the impact it has had on so many people’s lives.

Chamomile Barn Home & Giftware Range by Isabel Daman

A Return to Nature I remember the first time I visited Paris to source products for Chamomile Barn’s home and giftware range. I was blown away by the sheer scale and exciting array of design. This year was no different. We’ve picked our favourite trends and looked at how to make these work for you.

This season’s collections are awash with fur blankets, animal hide rugs, and untreated, roughly finished wooden tables and benches – think rustic Scandinavian chalets. You can achieve this look without investing in new furniture. Faux fur cushions, wooden candlesticks and other accessories are a great way to update your decor. We’ve taken this trend a step further and incorporated another earthy material, soft felt, in our winter rings too, thereby blending the trend for neutral, natural materials in interiors with the sartorial pastels of this season.

Victorian Tiles

Glass display cases and domes were to be found in many Autumn/Winter collections too and are a creative way of bringing the beauty of the outdoors in, or displaying treasured possessions. Fill them with a collection of feathers, nuts and moss, fossil finds, or more nostalgic treasure: old letters, pictures and books, tied together with pretty ribbon. These glass domes and cases also serve as a magnificent table centrepiece, filled to the brim with Christmas baubles, doubling the reflection of light bouncing off the decorations. We’ve opted for a twist on this trend: beautiful transparent picture frames and oversized glass bottles, which might even tempt you to experiment with creating a terrarium – the options are only limited by the bounds of your imagination.

If neutrals and earthy aren’t your cup of tea, then the antithesis can be found in the burst of colour and detail of home accessories modelled on intricately decorated, colourful Victorian ceramic tiles.

THE DARK KNIGHT There’s a hero in your garden, working tirelessly, relatively unseen, often unacknowledged.

ts rewards are few, often infrequent, but it toils on nonetheless, day and night. It’s your soil. Often, I am invited to a garden to advise the owner how best to maintain it and a familiar situation unfolds. The owner will have spent hundreds, sometimes thousands of pounds recreating borders, renewing their planting schemes, on many occasions working hand in hand with a garden designer, and the view is impressive. Then my head drops. I peer down to the ground, scratch around a little, and my heart sinks. They’ve dressed their garden up for its new future, but it’s wearing its tattered, worn out shoes from its infancy. There is no spring in its step. It’s tired underneath and it cannot pull off the performance for long. The garden owner has done nothing to care for the soil. Every garden should be built from the ground up, literally. Soil is formed primarily from rock erosion so it contains a certain level of mineral content. This mineral content helps provide

44

your plants with nutrition. In addition to rock erosion, soil also contains a health level of decomposed organic matter, as a result of plant and animal decay over time. It is this organic matter that provides its bulk. Dig into your soil and you will see the different layers that constitute it. These are called horizons and consist of (from the bottom up) parent rock, subsoil and topsoil. The roots of most plants will not penetrate deeper than the topsoil level because the majority of nutrients they require are found at this level. It transpires and therefore the deeper your topsoil, the happier the majority of your plants will be. To assess the mood of your plants, look at their appearance. To assess the mood of your soil, give it a feel. Good soil should be dark, crumbly and contain a healthy volume of worms, bacteria, insects and other micro-organisms. It is these little guys that are helping to break down the organic matter which in turn improves your plants’ ability to access the nutrients from this organic matter more quickly.

A good soil containing healthy amounts of organic matter will also contain a good balance of the three main elements that plants require for good growth: 1. Nitrogen supports the green growth in plants through providing protein, which results in increased stem length and leaf size, paramount to helping the plant generate sugars to feed itself. 2. Potassium is required to improve the quality and size of the plant’s flowers and/or fruit. 3. Phosphorous counterbalances the effects nitrogen has on the plant’s metabolic rate, so it keeps it all in balance and it ensures the plant has a good, strong root system.

However, the problem lies here. These elements are leached out of your soil on a continuous basis through rainfall or are lost by being consumed by plants. Only a minority of people ever consider that they should be replacing these elements by feeding their soil. You can do this two ways. The first is a short-term fix, through using inorganic fertilisers such as tomato feed, seaweed solution,

ingredients, but is predominantly made up of rotted down leaves, grass clippings and manure. It will ensure your soil’s structure is improved (improving air and water flow), its mineral content is enhanced and your depth of topsoil increases over time. Whether you have a sandy soil which retains nutrients poorly and needs to be bulked out and nutritionally enhanced, a clay soil

“ Every garden should be built from the ground up, literally ” or even the amateur gardener’s favourite tonic, MiracleGro. However, this really is only a very short-term fix as these solutions do nothing for your soil’s structure, so they too can be leached out through your soil. The answer is soil conditioner. Soil conditioner is, in essence, organic matter. At Oxford Edens, the conditioner that we supply most of, consists of many

that is compacted and draining poorly, and hence needs better structure for air flow, or a chalk soil that is too shallow (as they often are), you need to improve your soil, ideally in the autumn/ winter (dependent upon soil type) and spring. Neglect this at your peril. Your garden will not thank you for it and your dark knight will be visible, in the form of a shrinking violet.

Gardening tasks for winter 1. Condition your soil before the hard frosts commence, getting your beds ready for the growing season in spring. Mulch shrubs and trees, and give your roses a hard prune and mulch with manure. 2. Prune apple and pear trees and trim deciduous hedges. 3. Prepare sites thoroughly for any new lawn which can be sown or laid in spring.

Gardening tasks for early spring 1. Prune shrubs that flower on young wood, including Buddleja davidii, ready for spring growth. 2. Prune Wisteria back to within three buds from the base of a stem. 3. Fig trees and stone fruits can be pruned. 4. Herbaceous perennials can be divided and re-planted, with each plant renewed by discarding old stems and roots. 5. New lawns can be sown or laid.

“ Winning the Cherwell Business Awards 2013 Charity and Community Award has been one of the best things that has ever happened to us. The recognition and reward for all our hard work has been a huge encouragement for us, and has given our morale a significant boost. It often feels to a small charity that our work is invisible, and this award has made us that much more visible, which has helped with the kind of support we have received this year. To be able to say ‘OYAP Trust, award-winning charity’ is hugely significant in terms of our credibility, and for a charity this is priceless. We have received support from the local business community who have that extra level of confidence and belief in us, and have been chosen as charity of the year by Sainsbury’s Bicester, to which accolade I have no doubt our Cherwell Business Award has contributed. We are proud and honoured to have received this award, to be considered as a successful charitable business by the business community, and for young people in Cherwell to feel the benefit of this success through our work. We will have the confidence to ask the local business community to support us in our new empty shop youth café initiative, and we will be sure the support that we need will be there. We are indeed on Cloud 9! ” Helen Le Brocq, Director at OYAP Trust – Winner of the Cherwell Business Awards 2013 ‘Charity and Community Award’

Community

armest greetings from Heyford Park Free School and welcome to our Term 1 review – a look at some of the highlights from our first two months! I recall Wednesday 4th September 2013 with immense pride and hope that everyone involved has very happy memories of our historic opening day. We had excellent press coverage and great community support. Since then the students have settled into school life incredibly well and are already celebrating successes both in the classroom and in enrichment activities. So far this year, Year 7 students have performed traffic surveys on Camp Road, competed in an inter-house swimming gala and cross-country, and taken part in a concert with the Oxfordshire

County Music Service. One of the key factors of our success is the small and personal size of the school; with 60 students per year group we have got to know every child well, and are enjoying seeing them grow and develop. Our Directors of Learning are providing exciting opportunities in both Reception and Year 7, and are supported by excellent and experienced Teaching Assistants. Our school is a happy and busy place. Another key area of our Vision is about Community, both within school and engaging with Heyford Park itself. Community Police have visited our Reception class, and Year 7 have supported local charities at Harvest. Plans have been put in place for a

Christmas play extravaganza to which the whole community is invited on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th December. Looking forward to September 2014 we are excited by the progress being made on our new buildings; the Officer’s Mess and Specialisms Campus works are well underway and all our children and staff have been involved in the final designs. These buildings will provide fantastic indoor and outdoor facilities which will enable us to grow and develop for years to come. On behalf of our staff, parents and students, I would like to say a huge thank you for your support so far. We believe that Heyford Park Free School is already providing a great education for children in this area and we are looking forward to working with our community as we expand. We are receiving lots of enquiries regarding admissions for Reception Class and Year 7 students from September 2014. If you would like a copy of our prospectus or to arrange a visit please contact the School Office on 01869 232203 - we would be delighted to hear from you.

Oxfordshire Playbus has been all over the county helping build communities.

Jamie Briggs Removals & Storage Limited

amie Briggs Removals and Storage Ltd is a family-run business, regarded as one of the leading Domestic and Commercial Removers in Oxfordshire. Our friendly permanent staff have many years of experience in making removals as stress free as possible and will go out of their way to give excellent customer care and attention. Following the acquisition of Move Easy Removals, Jamie Briggs Removals and Storage merged the two companies and expanded into a 35,000 square foot warehouse on the Upper Heyford base in October 2010 which has a growing commercial and domestic population. A good move all-round! When our surveyor has viewed your property he will e mail or post you a quotation which will include our ‘Helpful Hints and Tips’ for a stress free move. I am happy to share them with you in this edition of The Heyford Park Magazine: Appoint – A removal company who is a member of the British Association of Removers (BAR) – Accreditation and regular checks are made by the BAR so you can be assured that the company you select will be up to date with their procedures. Awareness – Inform your removals company about the access to your new home. Lorries are large and don’t always fit!

50

Moving House features as one of the top most stressful events in people’s lives – FACT Good Removal Companies will also do their own research into this via google earth or personal visits. Parking Permits – Apply for parking permits in plenty of time, especially in London. Plan Ahead – De-clutter and above all, if you choose to self-pack, give yourself plenty of time – it takes much longer than you think.

We at Jamie Briggs are happy to help in any way we can to make your move as stress free as possible. Packing – Why not ask the removal company to pack for you? It takes less time, takes so much of the stress out of the move and is cheaper than you think it might be. Self-Pack – Ensure your boxes are sturdy and use good wrapping tape – Jamie Briggs supplies boxes and tape as part of their contract with you. Boxes – DO NOT OVER PACK THE BOXES, ESPECIALLY WITH BOOKS – Remember that the

boxes have to be manually handled. DO NOT pack heavy items on top of delicate items – common sense but this is often overlooked if you are rushing. Labelling – Clearly label your boxes and if possible label where you would like them placed in your new home. Dismantle – Dissemble beds/ climbing frames/sheds etc. beforehand, unless your Removal Company has quoted to do this for you – double check your quotation to ensure that this is noted if you requested it to be included. The Loft – Discuss the loft with your Removal Company. It is possible to have help with this but the majority of Removal Companies require it to be fully boarded and will need notice to do this for you. Downsizing? – If you are downsizing you might like to consider having a storage unit available as an option, because as much as you want your items to be with you, there is often not enough space, which in turn can cause stress and anxiety. If you have planned for items to come back to store and it is not necessary, you will not be charged. Personal files/Items – Removal men will assume that everything needs moving! Ensure that you put personal items to one side and

label them clearly or put them in the boot of your car out of the way. White Goods – Empty your white goods in plenty of time and give your fridge/freezer at least 24 hours to defrost. Ensure your washing machine is secured with its transit bracket and that water is drained from the hoses! Pets and Children – Removal Companies cannot carry pets or children in their lorries so it is essential to arrange safe movement of them before the removal day. Utilities – Notify all your utilities companies approximately 1 week before your move date and if you have one, arrange for your satellite dish to be taken down.

Please do ask our surveyor if you have any extra requirements and we will do our utmost to help. Other services we offer include; • European and Overseas Removals • Commercial Moves • Library Moves • Piano Moves • A ntique Collection and Delivery • Archiving • Shredding • Crate Hire for Commercial Moves • Binsorted Office Recyclable Recycling Bins For further information about the above please visit our website www.jamiebriggs.co.uk
