This common cooking spice from the mint family does more than just flavor your food! Oregano has been used all throughout history, more as a therapeutic herb than a seasoning. The Greeks called oregano the “joy of the mountains” and used it for healing wounds, killing infections and for lung disorders. Potent Antioxidant. A 2002 USDA study found that several spices were potent antioxidants, but oregano in particular had 40 times the antioxidant effects of apples and 5 times the antioxidant effect of blueberries. Potent Germ Killer. Oregano, and more specifically oregano oil, has been studied for its antimicrobial properties. Research has found that oregano kills fungi, such as candida, and helps destroy viruses. One study even showed that oregano was as effective as a conventional treatment at killing staphylococcus bacteria, a treatment resistant bacteria, although scientists say more research is needed. Immune Booster. Oregano can help strengthen the immune system. The respiratory tract benefits from oregano since it helps reduce infection and cough. It’s an important herb to keep around during the changing seasons and winter months. Oregano is available fresh or dried for seasoning. The oil of oregano is very concentrated, giving more of a therapeutic benefit, and is available in capsule form.

letter from the editor

June Gloom Editorial Director Nicole Brechka

If you’ve never lived in Los Angeles, you’d probably be shocked if I told you that, weather-wise, June is just about the worst time to visit the City of Angels. But it’s true, thanks to an annual pattern known as “June Gloom.” While the rest of the country is basking in the warm glow of early summer, “sunny” LA is usually mired in a funk of cloudy, chilly, foggy drizzle. Typically, June in Los Angeles is anything but beach weather, far different than what you might expect. The same is true for a lot of things. Take minerals. If you asked 100 people to name one mineral that Americans need more of, most would probably say “calcium.” But the truth is that we’re more likely to be deficient in magnesium. Worse still, an excess of calcium paired with a deficiency of magnesium is a recipe for all sorts of health problems. Find out more on p. 14. Or, if you ask people to name the most effective way to manage diabetes, how many would say “insulin”? But—especially in the case of type 2 diabetes—a combination of simple diet and lifestyle changes coupled with the right supplements can not only treat the disease, but may even help to reverse it. Check out “Blood Sugar Battles” (p. 18) for the scoop. Whether you’re planning a vacation or managing your health, reliable information is the key to making good choices. And that’s just what we try to provide every month in The Healthy Edge. Enjoy! Jerry Shaver Executive Editor Have a question or comment? Email us at healthyedgemag@gmail.com.

HOT INGREDIENT OF THE MONTH:

Astaxanthin An exceptionally powerful antioxidant found in algae, astaxanthin (“asta-ZAN-thin”) gives salmon its pink color—not to mention the energy to swim upstream against strong currents and leap over tall waterfalls to reach its spawning grounds. In humans, research shows that astaxanthin reduces wrinkles from within, enhances athletic performance, relieves joint soreness, reduces eyestrain from computer use, and protects against heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes. Studies have tested two proprietary forms, BioAstin and AstaREAL, which are found in many supplements, including Nutrex BioAstin Hawaiian Astaxanthin and Source Naturals Astaxanthin softgels (with AstaREAL).

TURN ON YOUR GOOD GENES Vitamin D turns on good genes that reduce the odds of heart problems, cancer, and other diseases, according to a study that examined the vitamin’s effect on more than 22,500 genes among 9 people. According to the research, published in PLOS One, an effective dose is 2,000 IU daily.

Garlic Reduces Blood Pressure An Australian study found that Aged Garlic Extract can lower blood pressure in adults with hypertension. Compared to a placebo, 480 mg of the garlic supplement (sold under the brand name Kyolic) taken daily for 12 weeks reduced blood pressure enough to lower heart disease risk by 16–40 percent. “Aged Garlic Extract has fewer side effects than fresh garlic and allows better standardization of dosage than other types of garlic supplements,” said lead researcher Karin Reid, PhD. The study was published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

new age

They say youth is wasted on the young, but with resveratrol, it doesn’t have to be

H

uman beings have been seeking the fountain of youth since time immemorial. And with resveratrol, an ingredient in red wine, we may have found something pretty close. Animal and cell studies have shown that resveratrol is a strong antioxidant that inhibits oxidation of cholesterol; fights inflammation; reduces risk for diabetes; may help control weight; and helps protect the heart. And human studies are now beginning to show similar results.

Fighting Diabetes Researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in Bronx, N.Y., found that resveratrol showed benefits among 10 people with prediabetes. According to Jill Crandall, MD, director of the Diabetes Clinical Trials Unit at Einstein, “Preliminary studies suggested that glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and vascular function improved.” Such changes reduce the risk for both diabetes and heart disease.

Protecting against Aging At the State University of New York at Buffalo, researchers gave resveratrol or a placebo to healthy people (10 in each group) for six weeks. Participants in the resveratrol group showed a significant drop in oxidative stress and inflammation, compared with the placebo group. Such an effect protects against damage that develops with aging. In another study, scientists tested the effect of resveratrol or a placebo among 10 healthy people who ate a high-fat,

By Vera Tweed

high-carbohydrate meal containing 930 calories—the equivalent of a typical fast-food dish. Although such food raises oxidation and inflammation, resveratrol suppressed this harmful response. Both studies were published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Studies suggest that resveratrol may activate the genes that enhance antioxidant production. It may also reverse the negative effects of high blood glucose on the lining of arteries. This type of damage is more pronounced with aging, and resveratrol may resuscitate a natural artery-protecting mechanism that degenerates as we age. Researchers also noted that among obese people, the supplement might help restore the function of the hormone leptin, which signals when we’ve eaten enough. In other words, resveratrol might help control appetite.

The French Paradox Despite the increase in obesity worldwide, France is still pretty skinny. About 14 percent of women and 16 percent of men are obese, according to the World Health Organization. Compare that to about 34 percent in the United States. “The French paradox is alive and well,” says Naomi Whittel, CEO of Reserveage Organics, a Fla.-based company that produces resveratrol supplements. “Despite a diet rich in saturated fat,” she says, “the French have strong cardiovascular systems and stay trim.” Reserveage Organics supplements are currently being used in clinical trials. Researchers at the University of Florida are

Akin’s & Chamberlin’s True Resveratrol combines transresveratrol from Japanese knotweed and red wine extract for a full-spectrum formula.

measuring the cognitive benefits of resveratrol, while scientists at the University of Miami are examining the benefits of resveratrol among stroke patients.

Shopping Guide The quantities of resveratrol in red wine are too low to produce the types of therapeutic effects observed in studies. According to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, a 5-oz. glass of red wine contains between 0.17 and 1.89 mg of resveratrol, and 1 cup of red grapes contains between 0.24 and 1.25 mg. In supplements, look for resveratrol from natural sources, which include grapes and Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum). The most common daily dosage is about 250–500 mg.

Reserveage Organics combines resveratrol with other antioxidants in the Resveratrol Ultimate Antioxidant formula. This cellular rejuvenation formula contains pomegranate, green tea, and cocoa.

New Discovery Promotes Bone Density Four Clinical Studies Back Bone Health Discovery. At Source Naturals®, our nutritional scientists follow important advances in supplements—especially those with strong science and carefully designed studies. One recent milk based discovery stood out. In 4 well-controlled clinical studies, scientists found that MBP®, a special sliver of protein found in milk, acts as a powerful catalyst for healthy bone density advances in women of various ages. MBP® is the key ingredient in Source Naturals MBP® Bone Renew™.

Powerful Support. Small Pill. MBP® comes in a small capsule taken once daily. It’s highly purified, concentrated, and with only trace amounts of lactose, is suitable for most lactose intolerant people. MBP®’s power comes from its ability to enhance our bodies’ natural bone renewing cycle. (You can see how the cycle works in the illustration below.) MBP® increases the activity of our bone building cells. Unlike calcium alone, which our bodies may not use for bone building, MBP® makes bones receptive to calcium for bone building. The result is healthy net bone formation from a well-balanced bone building cycle.

Better Bones. Better Life. Strong, healthy bones give us the mobility and the means to enjoy life. Our bodies reach peak bone mass as early as age 30, so it’s never too early to start caring for them with a healthy diet, weight bearing exercise, and the right supplements. Whether you get calcium from your diet or supplements, Source Naturals MBP® Bone Renew can help you build strong, healthy bones for life.*

Our bones work to renew themselves every day. As our bones breakdown through wear and fatigue, bone dissolving cells (osteoclasts) clean out the worn areas to make them ready for repair. Bone building cells (osteoblasts) use calcium and collagen as brick and mortar to rebuild our bones, completing our natural bone renewing cycle. Feeding these important cells with nutrients can help you have strong, healthy bones. Learn more at mbp-bone-renew.com. MBP® is a U.S. registered trademark of MEGMILK SNOW BRAND Co., Ltd. and is protected under multiple U.S. patents. *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. secrets of sea buckthorn Learn why this natural supplement is great for skin, heart health, and more

I

f good things come in small packages, the sea buckthorn berry is bursting with goodness! Traditional Chinese medicine has turned to sea buckthorn to treat everything from digestive disorders to respiratory problems. Today, however, sea buckthorn’s vibrant orange fruit and oil have become a popular addition to moisturizers, cleansers, and body oils.

What It Is Despite its name, sea buckthorn has nothing to do with the ocean. Instead it’s a nutrient-packed shrub that grows throughout the world. Sea buckthorn offers a unique mixture of active compounds, including a variety of carotenoids (such as lycopene and zeaxanthin); sterols; tocopherols; vitamins C, B1 , B2 , B5, B 6, and folate; and flavonoids (such as quercetin and kaempferol). It’s also one of the very few botanicals that provides a wealth of essential fatty acids, including omega-3s, -6s, -7s, and -9s. Sea buckthorn also contains high concentrations of palmitoleic acid—a fatty acid naturally found in sebum (the oil that lubricates the skin). This unique lipid supports skin cells and aids healing. Studies also show that palmitoleic acid is effective against gram-positive bacteria and may help tame skin infections.

Did You Know? Sea buckthorn may be listed as an ingredient under its Latin name, Hippophae rhamnoides.

What It Does Throughout history, sea buckthorn has been revered for its nourishing, regenerative, and restorative properties. It’s been used to treat a wide range of skin ailments, including burns, wounds, eczema, lesions, and sun damage. Several recent studies conducted in India show that topically-applied sea buckthorn can enhance the healing of both burns and wounds. Not only do these berries help keep infection at bay, sea buckthorn seed oil also provides potent antioxidants that appear to increase glutathione levels and reduce harmful free radicals. The skin can also benefit when sea buckthorn is taken internally. A small placebo-controlled trial of people with atopic dermatitis found that those who took supplemental sea buckthorn oil had higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their skin, which helped relieve their dermatological conditions.

Bonus Benefits A double-blind trial of 233 volunteers at the University of Turku in Finland found that those who took sea buckthorn experienced a significant drop in C-reactive protein—a marker of inflammation and a risk factor for heart disease. There’s also preliminary evidence that sea buckthorn supports healthful cholesterol levels, protects the lining of arteries, dampens the negative impact of high blood pressure, and may help prevent cancer.

Where to Find It Sea buckthorn can be found in cleansing lotions, soaps, moisturizers, and oils. But you can also benefit from taking this superfruit internally. Find it in capsule form, or enjoy its sweet, tart, and slightly spicy flavor in a daily dose of sea buckthorn juice. 10

German holistic therapist Hubertus Trouillé developed Almased to help improve his patients’ metabolism. It did that and more—burned fat, decreased hunger, improved kidney function, and promoted healthy levels of the human growth hormone (HGH), which has anti-aging effects. A host of studies by German scientists and 25 years of research have confirmed the claims: Almased’s potent blend of fermented soy, probiotic yogurt, and enzyme-rich honey safely speeds up metabolism, zaps weight, and boosts energy levels. In fact, just one serving of Almased daily may promote beneficial effects on metabolic health. What might this look like for you? You’ll lose weight while retaining muscle mass. Natural solutions for hepatitis C and liver health

hat do Gregg Allman, of the Allman Brothers Band, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, and Pam Anderson have in common? They’re all infected with the hepatitis C virus. While you might not be one of the other 5 million infected people in the United States, chances are you’re fewer than six Kevin Bacon-y degrees from someone who is. And that person might well not know it because the symptoms of hepatitis C are often non-existent—or so mild as to be

mistaken for something else. The first noticeable symptom is also the most common: fatigue. But it often doesn’t manifest until years after the original infection. Other symptoms of hepatitis C are very similar to flu symptoms—joint aches, muscle pain, loss of appetite, mild fever, and more fatigue— which leads many people to dismiss their symptoms as something routine. On top of all that, hepatitis C symptoms can ebb and flow, and even disappear for a while—so it can actually be years before a proper diagnosis is made. “The cycle of disease from infection to significant liver damage can take 20 years or more,” wrote C. Everett Koop, former Surgeon General of the United States and later director of the C. Everett Koop Institute at Dartmouth.

Cleaning Up Hepatitis C is a viral disease that can lead to serious and permanent liver damage. And the conventional drug treatment isn’t particularly fun, nor always successful. Fortunately, there are a number of vitamins and herbs that can help. As a bonus, anything that works with hepatitis C by definition supports the liver, so the supplement program outlined here can be used by anyone—whether or not you have hepatitis C—who’s interested in improving overall liver health. The single best thing you can do if you’ve got any form of liver disease is to stop drinking. Completely. Alcohol puts a strain on your liver that isn’t so bad if it’s healthy, but is lethal if it’s not. So if you’ve got hepatitis C, whatever else you do, quit drinking. Period. You should also stop taking Tylenol or any other product that contains acetaminophen—which is the number one cause of hospital emergency admissions for liver failure—on a daily basis. It’s pure hell on the liver. Imagine the common scenario of drinking too much and taking four Tylenol (or more) during the day to “treat” the hangover. If you’ve got hepatitis C and you do that, you’re pretty much asking to be a statistic. After you stop ingesting those two harmful substances, it’s time to start ingesting liver-supporting nutrients and herbs. I first learned about this “natural treatment” from Burt Berkson, MD, PhD. In 1999, Berkson published a paper called “A conservative triple antioxidant approach to the treatment of hepatitis C: A combination of alpha lipoic acid, silymarin, and selenium: Three case histories.” In it, he suggested a basic protocol of three supplements that would help protect the liver from free-radical damage, increase the levels of other fundamental antioxidants, and interfere with viral proliferation. That protocol is the core of the natural treatment for hepatitis C. 12

The Big Three ALPHA LIPOIC ACID: ALA is a powerful antioxidant that scavenges free radicals, protects cells from damage, and helps to regenerate vitamins C and E. It’s one of the most powerful liver nutrients available. SELENIUM: In January 2007, one of the most conservative publications in medicine, The Archives of Internal Medicine, published an article showing that daily selenium supplements appear to suppress the progression of the viral load in patients with HIV infection. Selenium levels have also been shown to be low in those with hepatitis C. MILK THISTLE: The herb milk thistle is probably the single best natural supplement for the liver. Its active ingredient is silymarin, which is believed to be responsible for its medicinal qualities. Milk thistle has been used in Europe as a treatment for liver disease since the 16th century.

More Liver Support There are a number of other important nutrients that you should consider as part of any liver health program. N-ACETYL CYSTEINE (NAC): This derivative of the amino acid L-cysteine is a precursor to the formation of the powerful antioxidant glutathione. It is one of the best ways to increase glutathione levels in the body (since glutathione isn’t well absorbed orally, your body has to make it). It’s also important for protecting the liver against the toxic effects of acetaminophen, for those who need to take acetaminophen on an occasional basis.

Bluebonnet Multi-Action Whey Of Life Whey Protein in Natural Chocolate Flavor features high-quality whey protein isolate and concentrate with naturallyoccurring immunoglobulin for optimal immunity.

WHEY PROTEIN: Though not technically a supplement, whey protein is another powerful way to increase the body’s stores of glutathione. Be sure to get a high-quality powder made by a reputable company (there are several listed on my website, jonnybowden.com). For liver health, you definitely don’t want to try one of those “fancy” protein shakes—full of sugar or artificial chemicals—that you can find at the mall. ARTICHOKES: This vegetable has a long folk history in treating liver diseases. The active ingredient is cynarin, which has demonstrated liver-protecting effects. Artichoke extract is used in many liver-supporting supplement formulas. DANDELION ROOT: Many people living healthily with hepatitis C swear by this herb and use it to make a tea. PHOSPHATIDYLCHOLINE: The active ingredient in the popular supplement lecithin is actually a substance called phosphatidylcholine, which has been shown to protect against cirrhosis and fibrosis in animal studies. We know that choline— the prime constituent of phosphatidylcholine—is essential for normal liver function, and phos choline is an excellent “delivery system.” In one double-blind British study, hepatitis C patients who were treated with 3 grams of phos choline each day had significantly reduced symptoms compared to control subjects. Many researchers have postulated that phosphatidylcholine has an ability to repair the membranes of liver cells. Hepatitis C is a disease in which many outcomes are possible. And what you do and the choices you make can have a profound influence on the course of the disease.

Paragon Plus Grape Root Dtox Liv Formula features a blend of liverfriendly herbs, including milk thistle, Oregon grape root, dandelion root, and burdock root, in liquid filled veggie caps.

WOMEN’S HEALTH SERIES:

Yeast Infections

BY SALLY KARLOVITZ, CN

IN PART 2 OF OUR series on women’s health, we will look at a common problem that women of any age may face: yeast infections. Candida albicans is a yeast-like fungus that lives predominantly in the intestines. A poor diet high in sugar and refined foods, stress, and antibiotic use are some of the factors that lead to the over proliferation of

yeast in the body. As yeast spreads, it begins to spill out of the gut and into the bloodstream, finding new places that it can colonize. When we talk about yeast infections, most women think of vaginal yeast, but yeast can colonize almost anywhere. No matter where it goes, the basic protocol for dealing with it remains the same: you must both kill

the yeast and create an environment that’s unfriendly to yeast. There are a variety of natural substances that are antifungal that can be very effective at killing yeast. Garlic, oil of oregano, grapefruit seed extract, pau d’arco, and caprylic acid (a derivative of coconut oil) are commonly used. Another effective approach is the use of enzymes that specifically break down the wall of a yeast cell allowing it to be destroyed. Finally, homeopathic remedies, using the principle of “like to cure like,” have been developed that stimulate the body to target and kill Candida yeast. To create an environment unfriendly to yeast requires you to first look at your diet and eliminate those things that are feeding the yeast. This would basically be all forms of sugar, wheat products, fruit and fruit juices, and alcohol. Focus instead on fresh vegetables, lean meats, whole grains such as quinoa and teff, and unsweetened plain yogurt or kefir. The main defenders our body uses in the gut to keep yeast in check are probiotics, or friendly bacteria, which is what you get in yogurt and/or probiotic supplements. Probiotic supplements are highly recommended because they can be used in concentrated levels and can be taken in forms that directly release in the intestines where they need to go.

Health from the Hive BY MARY ANN O’DELL, MS, RD WHEN WE THINK OF BEES, the first thing we think of is their sting. However, bees actually provide us with a host of beneficial nutritional and healing materials from their hives. BEE POLLEN. Bee pollen is the male seed of a plant that's collected by bees and carried back to the hive to nourish the colony and structure of honeycombs. Bee pollen is a very nutritious food, containing enzymes and coenzymes, along with amino acids, minerals, and vitamins. Bee pollen has been used for several purposes, including reducing allergies. Bee pollen contains quercetin, a bioflavonoid that inhibits the release of allergycausing histamine. Bee pollen has also been used to improve the immune system and increase energy and endurance. BEE PROPOLIS. Bees create propolis by collecting sap from trees and mixing it with wax in their hives. Propolis contains a variety of phytochemicals, many of which possess antibacterial and antiviral properties. These properties work in the body to increase resistance to illness by stimulating the immune system. Propolis is used to fight infection both internally and externally. HONEY. Bees make honey with the use of nectar from flowers. Honey is most commonly used as an alternative sweetener to chemically refined white sugar. While some argue that honey is

SUGAR BATTLES HOW TO PREVENT, TREAT, AND EVEN CURE TYPE 2 DIABETES

ype 2 diabetes used to be called “adult-onset” diabetes. But not any more. In fact, it’s no longer uncommon to see it in teenagers, and it’s even been reported in children as young as four. So what happened? And, more to the point, what can we do about it? By Jonny Bowden, PhD, CNS What’s the Difference? Type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes are entirely different animals. In both, there’s a problem with the hormone insulin, but it’s a very different problem. Type 1 diabetes is basically an autoimmune disease where the body attacks and destroys cells in the pancreas that produce insulin (the beta-cells). As a result, type 1 diabetics simply can’t make insulin, or can’t make enough. The widely shared view is that injectable insulin is the only available treatment for type 1 diabetes, since without insulin you would simply die. (Prior to the discovery of insulin in the 1920s, children with type 1 diabetes rarely lived beyond their late teens.) But the dietary and lifestyle modifications I’m going to suggest for type 2 diabetes are also a great idea for type 1 diabetics. Type 2 diabetics make plenty of insulin—it just doesn’t get the job done. And since type 2 diabetes almost wholly results from poor diet and lifestyle choices, it’s not only preventable, but correctable.

Sugar Struggles When you eat, your blood sugar rises and the pancreas releases insulin to remove excess sugar from the bloodstream. How much insulin depends on the workload, which depends on the amount of sugar, which depends on what you ate. Simple, right?

BLOOD SUGAR BATTLES, CONT. Pure carbohydrates—especially those that are high in sugar or convert to sugar quickly—have the most impact on blood sugar. Protein has an effect as well, but not nearly as pronounced, and fat has virtually no effect at all. That’s why diets higher in fat and protein and lower in carbs are terrific for controlling both blood sugar and insulin. Insulin’s job is to act as a sugar wrangler; it goes into the bloodstream, grabs extra sugar, and escorts it to cells to be burned for energy. Ideally, the cells that need sugar the most are muscle cells, since they’re supposed to do the heavy lifting. But the system doesn’t always work so well.

Modern Problems For one thing, our bodies weren’t designed for the amount of sugar and processed carbs we consume on a daily basis. And we’re not just talking desserts and candy. Virtually all cereals—except those that are really high in fiber—as well as most pastas, white rice, white bread, crackers, and the

over 40 inches and women with waists over 35 inches almost certainly have insulin resistance. When the muscle cells start resisting insulin, it takes its sugar payload to the fat cells. And they’re more than happy to welcome it in. In these early stages, the pancreas may produce enough insulin to prevent blood sugar from rising into the diabetic range, but there’s trouble brewing. High levels of insulin essentially lock the doors to fat cells, making weight loss difficult. As you gain weight—an inevitable consequence of insulin resistance—those fat cells begin secreting hormones of their own, which are designed to keep you fat. The result is that you become fatter while progressing toward a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

Healthy Solutions The obvious answer is to lower your insulin levels to a normal, healthy range. And the way to do that is by eating foods that don’t spike your blood sugar. When

FOR ONE THING, OUR BODIES WEREN’T DESIGNED FOR THE AMOUNT OF SUGAR AND PROCESSED CARBS WE CONSUME ON A DAILY BASIS. like are high-glycemic, meaning they convert to sugar quickly and raise your blood sugar rapidly. This puts a heavy demand on the pancreas. Unfortunately, our sedentary lifestyles don’t create much demand for sugar as an energy source. So when you eat a carb-laden meal, your blood sugar goes crazy and your pancreas starts pumping out insulin. Insulin floods the bloodstream, grabs up the excess sugar, and starts looking for places to drop it off. Muscle cells won’t need it if the only exercise they’re getting is pushing the clicker on a TV remote. So the sugar has to go somewhere else. And that’s a problem.

Rigid Resistance The condition whereby muscle cells stop paying attention to insulin is called insulin resistance, and it’s at the heart of diabetes. A good visual test for insulin resistance is to look at your belly. Men with waists 20

blood sugar is normal, there’s no need for the pancreas to go into overdrive, and insulin levels will fall almost immediately. In fact, most experts believe that insulin resistance—the hallmark of type 2 diabetes—can be reversed within as little as three days of eating mostly low-glycemic foods that don’t produce elevated levels of blood sugar. Since carbohydrates have the greatest impact on blood sugar, it makes sense that a low-carb diet is the ticket to preventing and treating type 2 diabetes. So an eating plan that’s higher in protein and fat and lower in starchy carbs is the way to go. Such a plan can also be helpful for type 1 diabetics, because it may allow them to lower their insulin dose. And that’s a good thing because insulin has many other effects in the body besides lowering blood sugar. For one thing, it sends a message to the kidneys to hold onto sodium, which raises blood pressure. And if you’re

In addition to diet and lifestyle changes, certain vitamins, herbs, and nutrients can help bring your blood sugar into balance. We like the following products. Almased Synergy Diet is a weight-loss shake and diet program that has been shown to be safe and effective for people with type 2 diabetes (and anyone else interested in losing weight naturally).

interested in losing weight, high levels of insulin are exactly what you don’t want. An eating plan that resembles the Paleolithic diet—foods that you could hunt, fish, gather, or pluck—coupled with exercise, which creates demand for sugar in muscle cells thus reducing insulin resistance, is the best plan for controlling blood sugar and insulin. And come to think of it, it’s a terrific overall plan for anyone wanting to stay healthy for life.

FOR MEN ONLY A guy’s guide to supplements

As a young man, you feel invincible. But as you get older, you start noticing changes. More fat, less muscle. Higher cholesterol levels. More fatigue. Poorer memory. A healthy diet and regular exercise can help you stay fit. And so can certain supplements. So where do you start? Begin by taking a daily high-potency multivitamin. Then consider some of the following individual supplements to reduce your risk of health problems and maybe even turn back the clock.

ENERGY Mitochondria in your body’s cells burn food molecules for energy. But damage to mitochondria increases with age, making them less efficient. Compounding the problem, most mitochondria are found in muscle cells, which also decrease with age. Several nutrients are essential for normal energy production in mitochondria. CoQ10 (50–200 mg a day of a fat-soluble form) was the basis of the 1978 Nobel Prize in chemistry, given to Peter Mitchell, PhD, for his explanation of energy production in mitochondria. L-carnitine (1,000–2,000 mg a day) helps cells burn fat for energy. And alpha-lipoic acid (100–600 mg a day) plays a key role in energy production.

HEART HEALTH Heart disease is still the leading cause of death among men, and several nutrients can make a huge difference in heart health. Chief among them are omega-3 fatty acids (1,000–2,000 mg a day). These healthy fats can reduce inflammation, thin the blood, slow the heart rate, and improve blood vessel flexibility. They also help regulate heart rhythm and reduce triglyceride, a fat related to cholesterol. To lower cholesterol levels, opt for beta-sitosterol (2–4 grams a day). The B-complex vitamins, particularly folic acid (400–800 mcg a day), help lower levels of homocysteine, a blood protein that increases risk of heart disease and stroke. Magnesium (200–300 mg a day) can lower blood pressure.

BRAIN HEALTH The omega-3s (1,000–2,000 mg a day) can also help preserve brain function. Studies have found that omega-3s can help people with depression, impulsiveness, aggressiveness, and bipolar disorder. DHA (300–500 mg a day), one of the omega-3s, can help with memory. Another memory aid: L-theanine (100–200 mg, one to three times a day), found in green tea. In a recent study, a combination of L-theanine and green tea supplements improved memory and

attention in men and women with mild cognitive impairment, a common prelude to Alzheimer’s disease.

acuity, perhaps by working with lutein and zeaxanthin.

PROSTATE HEALTH MUSCLE ATROPHY Muscle mass declines with age. Exercise can slow this deterioration, and some amino acids can help boost muscle mass in seniors. Chief among them are the branched-chain aminos (BCAAs)—leucine, isoleucine, and valine. Of these, leucine (3–6 grams a day) is the most important because it helps convert protein to muscle. In a European study, researchers found that leucine helped increase muscle synthesis in older men almost to the level found in younger men. Other helpful aminos include betaalanine (2,400 mg a day), L-ornithine (2 grams a day), and multi-amino acid supplements (8 grams a day) .

Benign enlargement of the prostate is common in men over age 50. Lycopene (5–30 mg a day), found in tomatoes, can slow the increase in prostate size and lower levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA), a marker of prostate cancer risk. Other supplements that support the prostate include saw palmetto (200–300 mg a day) and stinging nettles root extract (100–200 mg a day). Inflammation of the prostate, called prostatitis, can lead to pain during urination and intercourse. Studies show that quercetin (1,000 mg a day) can help. Combining quercetin with bromelain (600 GDU daily) and papain (50 mg a day) improves the odds of recovery.

EYE HEALTH

SEXUAL HEALTH

Night blindness, characterized by difficulty seeing in the dark or being blinded by headlights, is a classic sign of vitamin A (10,000 IU a day) deficiency. Lutein (6–10 mg a day) and zeaxanthin (1 mg per day) form the macular pigment, which helps eyes register tiny details. These two nutrients might also slow the progression of macular degeneration. And astaxanthin (4–6 mg a day) might enhance visual

L-arginine is the precursor to nitric oxide, a compound that regulates the flexibility of blood vessels. While good for the heart, arginine can often enhance a man’s ability to maintain an erection. Supplemental arginine (750–2,000 mg per day) has been shown to improve the ability of blood vessels in the penis to dilate. Also, the herb maca has been traditionally used to enhance sexual desire and performance.

MEN’S HEALTH:

The Holistic Approach to Sexual Health

BY MARY ANN O’DELL, MS, RD

AS MEN AGE, THEY ARE BECOMING more and more interested in increasing their health, endurance, and vitality throughout their lifetimes, and this includes sexual health. Sexual dysfunction is a problem not uncommon in men as they age. Thankfully there are natural approaches that help promote healthy libido and overall sexual health. LIFESTYLE SUPPORT. A healthy diet is the foundation for optimum health. Nourishing your body with organic fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, nuts, and seeds will translate into improving health in your whole body. Exercise, stress reduction and sleep are also important factors for sexual health. Exercise can help boost your mood and self-esteem, which makes you feel better about yourself. Stress and lack of sleep are two killers of sexual desire, so make sure you’re keeping stress under control and getting enough sleep to ensure that you’re feeling your best. HERBAL SUPPORT. Numerous herbs have been found to play a role in enhancing libido in men. Maca enhances sexual function and energy in both men and women. It has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure, and increase DHEA in men. To boost testosterone levels, Tribulus has been used as an aphrodisiac for centuries. Ginkgo helps improve circulation, and adaptogens such as Eleutherococcus and ginseng help reduce stress and restore energy and balance in the body. In addition to these specific herbs, men should take a high potency daily multivitamin to ensure that they’re getting the essential nutrients needed for optimal health.

Q&A Q:

Are there herbs or vitamins that can help support thyroid function?

Like all glands in the body, the thyroid gland needs specific nutrients in order to function properly and optimally. A sluggish thyroid can result in weight gain, sensitivity to cold, fatigue, and other symptoms. While it is important to check with a qualified health care practitioner before starting any thyroid regimen, there are some good natural approaches that can support healthy thyroid function and therefore, can help a person feel better. The amino acid tyrosine plays an essential role in the production of thyroid hormones, as does the trace mineral iodine. In the herb world, certain Ayurvedic herbs show great potential in supporting the thyroid. Guggulsterone from guggul extract has been found to promote healthy thyroid function. Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that may enhance mental and physical vitality and overall well-being.

IT’S SUMMER, and it’s time to get outside! Camping, picnics, water skiing, swimming, gardening, whatever it is, most of us will spend more time outside during the summer months. Here are some tips to keep your skin protected and glowing all summer long.

PREPARING SKIN FOR SUMMER SUN

ing and protecting ingredients such as vitamin E or aloe vera. Protect your skin from pests with natural insect repellents. Don’t apply chemicals to your skin to keep the bugs away. Look for completely natural insect repellents made with essential oils, not toxic chemicals such as DEET.

Poison Ivy, Oak or Sumac is a common warm weather malady in many parts of the country. After exposure, use poison ivy soap and an herbal spray made with jewelweed, which helps to naturally relieve itching. Insect Bites/Stings. Always keep tea tree oil on hand as a natural antiseptic and insect bite soother.

Get your skin ready for summer by setting up and maintaining healthy skin lifestyle habits. From the inside be sure to nourish and hydrate the skin. Eat plenty of antioxidant-rich foods such as fruits, superfruits, vegetables, and unrefined whole grains. Include good fats such as those found in nuts, avocado, flax, chia, cold-water fish, and olive oil. These healthy fats support moisture balance in the skin. Be sure to drink lots of pure water. A hydrated body helps nourish skin cells and allows water-soluble vitamins to work better. On the outside be sure to protect your skin with a natural sunscreen or sunblock. Look for a broad-spectrum formula that protects against UVA and UVB rays. Look for mineral based sunscreens that contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, as well as nourish-

Happy feet are a key to good health

L

eonardo da Vinci said that the foot is the greatest engineering device in the world. Your feet are your foundation, providing stability and balance. But if you’re like most people, you forget about these extremities until they hurt. And that’s doing these important appendages a disservice. Since the average pair of feet takes 10,000 steps per day, even normal wear can lead to swelling, calluses, dry skin, chipped nails, and minor infections such as athlete’s foot. More complicated—but still fairly common—foot problems include heel pain, nail fungus, and pain in the balls of the feet. If you’re diabetic, any injury to your feet is an open invitation for infection. And infection can cause higher blood sugars, which can interfere with the healing process and lead to ulcers and potential amputation. Many common foot problems can be alleviated—or avoided—by simply taking the time for some basic care. And, let’s face it, these hard-working supports deserve at least as much attention as we give to our hair and teeth. Pampering our feet really is a vital indulgence.

FEET TREAT

Follow these steps for a natural, do-it-yourself pedicure that’s also safe for diabetics with foot issues: Wipe off old nail polish using a cotton pad soaked in an acetonefree polish remover. Soak your feet for 5–10 minutes in warm water and ½ cup Epsom salts to relax your feet. Then pat your feet dry with a towel. Slough away dead skin using a pumice stone. Rub gently in a circular motion, paying extra attention to your heels and the balls of your feet. File your toenails with an emery board. File straight across, and gently round the edges. Rinse your feet with warm water to wash off any dead skin. Use the flattened end of an orange stick to push back cuticles. Rub a drop of oil into the nails and cuticles to prevent drying or cracking. Try: TheraNeem Nail & Cuticle Oil Pen from OrganixSouth, with nourishing organic oils. If you polish your nails, look for a polish that is free of toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and formaldehyde—all known carcinogenic ingredients. Try: Honeybee Gardens, No-Miss, and Suncoat all-natural polishes. Massage a rich foot lotion into your feet. Concentrate on your heels and the balls of your feet, as these areas are especially prone to calluses. Put your feet up and relax!

specially if they’re grilling, people often spend so much time focusing on summer entrées that they put little thought into side dishes—beyond opening a bag of chips, of course. And that’s unfortunate, because Americans get too few fresh vegetables and fruits in their diets as it is, and side dishes are the perfect way to add more. Emphasizing quick and creative food combinations that take full advantage of summer’s abundance of ripe, fresh, local produce is an excellent strategy during blazing-hot days when you want to keep cooking to a bare minimum. Having a few flavorful side items on hand can even make a nice, light meal. To prepare your own low-fuss, seasonal side dishes, just try a few of these tips: Make smart use of what you cook. Prepare quick-to-make seasonal vegetables such as green beans or quinoa, both of which can be used in cold dishes later. Chilled cooked green beans can be used on top of green salads, mixed with canned beans and a gluten-free Dijon mustard vinaigrette to make a bean salad, or mixed with olives, tomatoes, feta cheese, and a red wine vinaigrette to make a Greek green bean salad. Quinoa can be used as a gluten-free substitute for wheat-based couscous to make tabouli with fresh parsley, mint, cucumber, green onions, lemon juice, and olive oil. It also can be combined with other ingredients, such as avocado, tomato, peppers, cilantro, and a cumin-lime vinaigrette for a Mexican twist. Use no-cook items as much as possible. Perk up raw vegetable-based sides with flavorful no-cook foods such as olives, avocado, nuts, or seeds. Or make super low-calorie noodle salads with ready-to-use Sea Tangle Kelp Noodles, which have a neutral taste that enhances whatever you combine with them. Kelp noodles are high in

this time of year. Try serving these fruits on the side by themselves, using berries or peaches to make a fruit salsa for topping seafood or poultry, or adding berries, grapes, or chopped peaches, with goat or feta cheese or toasted nut pieces, to fresh spinach or lettuce side salads.

melon marvel Just 1 cup of cantaloupe provides a full serving of vitamin A and close to a serving of vitamin C. Enjoy this sweet summer fruit with our recipes for Cantaloupe & Watermelon Salad and Cantaloupe Salsa

ou know that ubiquitous greenishorange melon that we’ve been calling a cantaloupe all these years? Turns out it’s actually a muskmelon. But no matter what you call it, it’s a true summertime favorite. A Middle Eastern proverb puts it best: “He who fills his stomach with melons is like he who fills it with light—there is a blessing in them.” Blessings are indeed to be had in abundance from this delightful fruit that goes right to the head of the class. The website The World’s Healthiest Foods (whfoods.org) gives what we call cantaloupes an A+, due largely to the staggering amounts of vitamins A and C they contain. Just 1 cup of the sweet orange flesh offers more than 100 percent of the Daily Value for vitamin A and just under 100 percent for vitamin C—with only 56 calories.

Vitamin A has been proven to be especially important for eye health, contributing to a reduced risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. And a study at Kansas State University found that vitamin A can help offset the deleterious effects of second-hand smoke and ward off emphysema. Vitamin C, of course, is a powerful antioxidant. And when you combine it with the beta-carotene that naturally contributes to the cantaloupe’s vibrant orange color, you’ve pretty much covered many of your bases for reducing the risks of cancer and heart disease. An assortment of B-vitamins and minerals rounds out the cantaloupe’s nutritional profile, making it a premier choice for your daily fruit allotment.

Pick the Perfect Melon Studies have shown that the riper the fruit, the higher the vitamin and mineral content—so be sure to choose the ripest melons you can find. They should be smooth and blemish-free, with no soggy spots. The underlying color should tend more to orange than to green; and the stem end should be smooth and slightly concave, with no pieces of stem still attached. When raised to your nose, the melon should give off a slightly sweet fragrance—an overpowering or cloying sweetness may indicate over-ripeness and interior decay. If possible, store whole melons in the crisper drawer of your fridge, as its mixture of higher moisture level and colder temperature is optimal for cantaloupes. Then just add a little bit of this nutrient powerhouse to any meal—cut it up on your cereal, purée it in a smoothie, mix it into yogurt, or try one of our delicious recipes.

did you know? Cantaloupe is a member of the same family as cucumber, squash, pumpkin, and gourd. The melon’s peak season is June through August. 1 cup of cantaloupe contains just 56 calories. Cantaloupe is named after Cantalup, the Italian village where the melon was first cultivated.

a word of caution... Because cantaloupes grow on vines that allow them to rest on the soil, proper cleaning and handling are important. That webbing on the surface has its downside: Bacteria, including salmonella and E. coli, find it an especially hospitable place. The University of California, Davis, recommends scrubbing melons with a vegetable brush under running water, then blotting dry with a paper towel, to remove any bacteria. Start with a clean cutting board and knife, and rinse the knife repeatedly while cutting. Lastly, if you’re not eating it right away, wrap the cut melon tightly and refrigerate immediately.

in season: rhubarb Harvested from a lushly growing perennial, this tart-flavored veggie shines as a fruit in summer recipes How to Select and Store Look for firm stalks without any blemishes, advises Judy Henry of Berry Patch Farm in Nevada, Iowa. “Check the cut end: it should be moist, not dry,” she says. Colors range from blushing pink to deep fuchsia; generally, the darker the hue, the tarter the flavor. Wrap unwashed rhubarb in a dish towel and keep in the refrigerator for no more than a few days. If you need to store it longer, wash the stalks in cold water, dice, and freeze. To revive limp rhubarb, slice off the ends, and stand the stalks in a pitcher of cold water for a couple hours.

Prep Tips Rhubarb leaves contain toxic levels of oxalic acid, so be sure to remove and discard them before using. Trim the stalk at the root end; insert a small knife under any visible strings, and pull to remove. Wash well in cold water.

try this! Combine tart rhubarb with sweet strawberries in pies. Add finely diced fresh rhubarb to your cake or cookie batter. Mix cooked, puréed rhubarb into vinaigrettes. Boil 1 cup each of rhubarb and sugar (tasting for sweetness) for about 30 minutes; use as a base for punch or slushies.
