MUSCLE LOSS IS NO MATCH FOR VITAMIN C The human body loses 1 percent of muscle mass per year after age 50, which doesn’t sound like a lot. But over the years, it adds up and can lead to frailty, diabetes, and disability. Fortunately, vitamin C can slow down this loss of muscle. British researchers looked at data from more than 13,000 people between the ages of 42 and 82 and found that those getting the most vitamin C in their diets had the least amount of muscle loss. They estimate that eating an orange plus a vegetable side dish every day would provide enough vitamin C.
