At HGA, we design for change. The built environment is at the intersection of changes in technology, energy supply, climate, and business models—all impacting the human experience. We help our clients prepare for an evolving future. Our goal is to design buildings that are embraced by the owners, operators, users, and community members who live, work, and gather inside and around them. A beloved building— one so treasured it lasts for generations—is both beautiful and sustainable.
It is our responsibility to shape the future through design. We are inspired by the world we can build when our industry steps up to mitigate the devastating effects of climate change—our clients, our children, and our communities depend on it.

HGA was founded in 1953 on the belief that diverse perspectives, primarily of different disciplines, are integral to great design. As a firm committed to learning and growing, our definition of diversity has evolved, and is inspiring us to build a more equitable and inclusive culture.
Designing from an equity lens is about listening without assumptions and creating experiences that all can share where the phrase “all are welcome” can truly resonate.

Inclusive Design
It is no small thing to leave a mark on the world.
At HGA, our responsibility as designers is both inspiring and humbling: to create a positive, lasting impact. We value empathy, are fueled by curiosity, and embrace the hard work that leads to innovation. We endeavor to create environments in which patients and staff thrive. At the forefront of our healthcare planning and design is safety, both for staff and patients. We incorporate unconscious and conscious design cues that demonstrate to patients they are receiving the highest quality of care in a safe space where they are respected.
We use design to empower patients, provide a safe and respectful healing environment, foster the ease of mobility, connect to the community, and provide a sense of purpose and independence to all who inhabit the space.
HGA’s goal on every project is to ensure that our team responds to the most challenging questions faced by healthcare organizations today—and that we address the evolving needs of our clients, their staff, their patients, and their communities. Our pre-design strategy involves interactive workshops with hospital leadership, physicians, staff members and user groups to create an ideal patient environment. We merge evidencebased and ethnographic research, Lean principles, data analytics, and design thinking with architecture, engineering, and planning to provide value-based solutions. Through our work, we help clients reimagine ways to deliver services for improved staff efficiency and better patient care.
