At HG, our landscape architects and civil engineers work side by side, combining aesthetic sensibility with technical acumen, which creates attractive yet functional solutions for your external built environment. Our design philosophy is that site design should perform required functions without distracting from the aesthetics of the buildings they serve.

HG intentionally maintains a small firm culture, even though we routinely compete on projects with much larger firms. We have found that clients prefer to work with the same senior staff that appeared on the submittal and attend the interview. We are keen on customer service and invite you to call the owners/partners whenever necessary. This way, we maintain relationships…over 80% of our clientele is repeat business. We have active projects in Virginia from Blacksburg to Virginia Beach, and D.C to South Boston.

DAVE GERSTENMAIER, PLA Founding Partner and Director of Design For over 35 years, Dave has accumulated an extensive and award-winning portfolio in landscape architectural design and land planning in Virginia. He started his own firm in 1991, and built a reputation for effective project delivery balancing cost, time, and quality design. In 2000, he took the helm of H&G Landscape Architects in Richmond and catapulted the firm into the preeminent landscape architectural and land planning firm in the region. Clients appreciate Dave’s passion and responsiveness resulting from the small-size firm mindset, but creative ingenuity usually characteristic of a metropolitan practice that has distinguished the firm’s work. Through Dave’s creative land planning, and design of the courtyards and grounds at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, the campus was designated “America’s Most Beautiful Hospital,” and in that same year, Dave was the recipient of The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture Impact Award for Landscape Architecture.

CHARLENE HARPER, PE, PLA, LEED AP Senior Partner and Director of Engineering Charlene has more than 25 years of experience in the fields of water resources and site development specializing in low impact development and innovative stormwater treatment designs, stormwater concepts for federal projects, and compliance strategies for MS-4 and industrial stormwater permit programs. Her work focuses on the reduction of environmental impacts due to the built environment both during and post-construction, as well as identifying opportunities for water quality and flood control retrofits. Charlene is an expert in the design and installation oversight of innovative stormwater treatment techniques such as green roofs, cisterns, permeable pavements, submerged gravel wetlands, and bioretention cells in addition to traditional treatment practices such as filters and basins. She has managed significant contracts for both public and private sector clients, using a collaborative project approach and management style.

WEST VILLAS, WESTMINSTER-CANTERBURY SHENANDOAH VALLEY | WINCHESTER, VA HG is providing land planning and landscape architecture services for this project, which is currently in design. Located adjacent to the existing SVWC campus, the site for ten new villa buildings is both steep and heavily wooded, with minor rock outcroppings. The major eastern approach to the new development is via a new road which connects to the existing campus over a wooded ridge line. The landscape design will attempt to preserve as much as possible of the existing landscape within the buffers around the site perimeter and will augment existing plantings with more shade trees, understory trees, evergreen trees, and shrub massings to create a lush, solid border around the property and a screen to the neighbors. The interior of the site will also be lushly landscaped with shade and ornamental tree canopy as well as understory and shrub plantings. A pedestrian pathway system throughout the site will include paved sidewalks along the villa access road as well as a trail system through extensive park spaces. All pathways will be graded at under 5% in order to be universally accessible. The site slopes down from east to west and from north to south. The natural drainage patterns will be augmented and highlighted through lowimpact-development strategies incorporating stormwater as an aesthetic design feature of the project. A series of rain gardens, natural drainage channels, structured drainage channels, and two large ponds at the low point of the site will, together with the site vegetation, create a beautiful setting for the new villa buildings that draws upon the unique characteristics of the property. A central gathering space for the site will be connected to the path system; the large meadow landscape surrounding the new ponds will provide further recreational and aesthetic opportunities. The primary vehicular entry from the west crosses over a causeway created between the two ponds. The site also includes a parcel of land which will be leased to commercial tenants, to include intergenerational day-care as well as a medical office.

WESTMINSTER-CANTERBURY RICHMOND EXPANSION | HENRICO COUNTY, VA At Westminster-Canterbury’s northside campus, HG Design Studio is working with SFCS Architects to assist the client with modernizing an older facility. Senior living has become a competitive market, and often driven by the younger generation, who values luxury and up-to-date facilities. In response, the creation of gardens, a Wellness Activity area above a new parking deck as well as the creation of a new Villa neighborhood is the objective to improve the campus. The roof of the parking deck will accommodate a variety of wellness components, which have all been determined through close coordination with WC staff and residents. Structured elements like pickleball courts, an exercise equipment fitness courtyard, and firepit and picnic shelter will be joined by gardens and open lawn areas for multipurpose uses. Land planning will integrate a collection of buildings from different eras into a sense of community and place. The new Villa neighborhood will be centered around a large Village Green, with pathways, gardens, and a dog park. Community garden beds will be located adjacent to the existing Cochrane Pond. Berms and dense plantings will screen the property from adjacent commercial development. A walking trail, which is among the most popular amenities with residents, will connect all parts of the large campus.

WESTMINSTER-CANTERBURY RICHMOND EXPANSION | HENRICO COUNTY, VA

CHICKAHOMINY FALLS | HANOVER, VA HG Design Studio is proud to have been a part of planning this unique community. Dave Gerstenmaier created a master plan that includes 400 single-family units on 200 acres with a twist on its farmland roots. Chickahominy Falls is the Richmond area’s first neighborhood that speaks to a farm-to-table and alternative trends to the conventional neighborhood template. Empty nesters and retirees are attracted to a concept that will blend suburban clubhouse living with professionally managed organic farming, producing fresh, local, healthy fruits, veggies, and foods while creating a wonderful and unique outdoor amenity for the residents. Farm-lets or Pocket-Gardens will be dotted throughout the neighborhood, alongside other HG designs around the clubhouse, pool, green spaces and play spaces. The community is planned for the 55+ age group with opportunities to experience and enjoy outdoor activities and healthier choices of food. HG Design Studio assisted with all levels of initial planning and zoning for the neighborhood and its adjacent 10-acre farm, along with designing open and gathering outdoor spaces, walking trails, bike trails around the river and shared spaces. HG connected the developer with a national organic farming vendor and worked with the natural topography of the site for placemaking of the gardens. With multiple wetland areas cutting up the site, a grid style development would not work. Our designers let the land dictate where our sections lines would be. Once sections were defined, we could work with the grades to see what type of product would best work in those areas. The wetlands and other low-lying areas became ideal areas for walking trails that connect the whole project together. HG also provided landscape and lighting plans for each section and worked with the team to design and implement a sales and marketing center on the farm. For Cornerstone Development, a commitment to environmental preservation and sustainability is important, so HG is tasked with adhering to the low-impact community plan. State-of-the-art conservation practices will protect mature hardwoods, watersheds and the river.

CEDARFIELD SENIOR LIVING | HENRICO COUNTY, VA HG Design Studio was inserted into this large and multi-phased expansion project to provide landscape architecture for the gardens and exterior spaces surrounding the new Wellness Building, four additional courtyard gardens dotted throughout the property, and perimeter planting for additions to the Independent Living building and Household facility. Cedarfield is situated on 90 wooded acres, and the presentation of its grounds is integral to its mission to enrich the quality of life of its residents. An essential part of our charge was to create landscapes that conform and correspond with the existing campus, and to work in collaboration with the facilities staff, including the horticulturalist on plant selections.

LOCATION Henrico County, VA

Our landscape architects designed attractive, pedestrian-friendly garden spaces accessible to residents of all abilities. These included a Secret Garden courtyard, a Memory Care courtyard, a New Resident courtyard, and planting quadrangles adjacent to a loading dock and two building additions. Client and architectural input was integrated into the programming and schedule in order to attain consensus, desired budget, and design deliverables, including presentation of rendered landscape concepts. HG evaluated existing POD submittals for information relevant to the proposed design and coordinated plans with county officials to ensure compliance. Selection of plantings suitable for the area and the residents was part of our process, and HG solicited bids from contractors for preliminary estimates of construction budgets.

WINCHESTER SENIOR LIVING | WINCHESTER, VA HG is providing Landscape Architecture services for a new Senior Living Center in the heart of historic Winchester, on the site of the old Valley Health Hospital. Working collaboratively with Moseley Architects and Greenway Engineering, HG assisted the client in receiving City Council approval to proceed with the project, which has experienced opposition from the neighbors because of the scale of the building within this residential neighborhood. A beautiful and intensively planted landscape design was key to gaining approval to proceed. The property includes an existing building to remain, and will include a new structure which will accommodate independent living and memory-care facilities in addition to various amenities for residents. A corner park will serve both residents and the surrounding neighborhood, and several existing parking lots will be improved with upgraded planting. The site plan was submitted to the City of Winchester for approval in mid-October and building design is underway.

JOHN ROLFE SQUARE | HENRICO COUNTY, VA HG was tasked early in the development process for this 55+ community in western Henrico to assist with rezoning. This process required creating illustrative exhibits to convey the clients intentions. To help the County planning commissioner and board of supervisor member understand our client’s vision, HG produced a bird’s eye flythrough video that took the viewer through the neighborhood in real time. It was a huge part of securing the desired zoning proffer changes requested. In addition, HG also met numerous times with adjacent property owners to address their concerns with stormwater runoff and landscape buffering. Charlene made a presentation to concerned citizens regarding plans for enhanced stormwater management practices both during and after construction.. The case was passed unanimously by the planning commission and board of supervisors, with adjacent neighborhood support. Additionally, during the land planning phase, HG had to solve the need for level home sites being placed on a rolling topography on a very tight land area due to this being an infill site. HG navigated a very challenging slope to accommodate the home sites while eliminating the need for expensive walls via stepping the homes as needed and adding walk out basements to take up the grade. Through clever layout of house pad sites and land sculpting, we were able to steppe the homes with the land, while still creating a cohesive neighborhood vibe. Without our innovation, the original zoning submittal had 25’ tall walls holding up the home sites at the rear of the property, and HG was able to substantially lower expense to the owner. HG also created a central park amenity for all homeowners to congregate and enjoy company of friends and neighbors. A pedestrian path system made up of concrete sidewalks and mulched trails connects the community as a whole. By providing amenity design options based on good, better, best, the client was able to make a decision balancing between producing a return for its investors while still designing a community with elegant amenities to attract the target market. Landscape architecture was a key component to creating beauty and function for homebuyers.

SIT TER & BARFOOT VETERANS CARE CENTER | RICHMOND, VA

The Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center is a state run assisted living facility on the campus of the McGuire VA Medical Center. HG Design Studio worked with the Department of Veterans Care and the project architect on site landscape architecture, the visitor courtyard and two special courtyard areas for Alzheimer’s patients. Carved out of the leftover space between two buildings, one small courtyard allows patients to walk a paved circle, make use of various seating options or experience different textures through the hardscape materials and plant materials. The main Alzheimer’s courtyard is designed with seating and a shed to store gardening equipment for the occupants. The walking path allow allows for patients to complete a circle with no dead ends, and designers used different paving materials to emphasize entrances and exits to help with wayfinding. All plants and hardscape materials were chosen with safety in mind, and both Alzheimer’s courtyard spaces are secure with no outlets outside of the facility.

BETH SHOLOM LIFECARE COMMUNITY | HENRICO COUNTY, VA HG Design Studio was retained by the owner to complete a comprehensive analysis of the whole campus of this village of long-term care, assisted living, memory support and independent living apartments. We studied pedestrian flow, landscape amenities and lighting for all the buildings, with an intensive focus on particular areas of the site. We considered locations for memorial plantings, focal elements, site amenities, and a raised garden for wheelchairs. HG also created a detailed set of plans for Penn Park featuring a planting design, pergola, paving patterns, seatwall, fence, arbor, wetland deck, and a separate area for interactive gardening in which the residents can tend to vegetables, herbs and flowers. The overall master planning contains hardscape, landscape, lighting and irrigation plans, and enhanced planting plans for the main entrances.

THE CROSSINGS AT IRONBRIDGE | CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA

In 1997, HG Design Studio prepared a master plan for the building location, guest drop off and parking lots, and planned the design of an internal courtyard hardscape and landscape plan for a private developer. Intimate seating areas provide spaces for families to privately visit with loved ones and more open central seating areas allow for social events for residents. The courtyard features a three-tiered fountain and lush landscaping to provide a shady respite to invite enjoy the day outside. In 2002, after Bon Secours took ownership of the building, they contacted HG Design Studio to prepare a memory care garden on the campus. We created an outdoor courtyard secured with a 6’ tall decorative fence for the residents’ safety in a contained setting, as well as a meandering walking path around the perimeter of the woodland setting, with benches and picnic tables placed along the way for family and residents to gather. We created an illustrative exhibit for Bon Secours to use in showing how family members could donate a recognition.
