Dave Gerstenmaier, PLA President and Director of Design For over 30 years, Dave has accumulated an extensive and award-winning portfolio in landscape architectural design and land planning in Virginia. He started his own firm in 1991, and built a reputation for effective project delivery balancing cost, time, and quality design. In 2000, he took the helm of H&G Landscape Architects in Richmond and catapulted the firm into the preeminent landscape architectural and land planning firm in the region. Clients appreciate Dave’s passion and responsiveness resulting from the small-size firm mindset, but creative ingenuity usually characteristic of a metropolitan practice that has distinguished the firm’s work. Through Dave’s creative land planning, and design of the courtyards and grounds at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, the campus was designated “America’s Most Beautiful Hospital,” and in that same year, Dave was the recipient of The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture Impact Award for Landscape Architecture.
Charlene Harper, PE, LEED AP Director of Engineering and Design Partner Charlene has more than 20 years of experience in the fields of water resources and site development specializing in low impact development and innovative stormwater treatment designs, stormwater concepts for federal projects, and compliance strategies for MS-4 and industrial stormwater permit programs. Her work focuses on the reduction of environmental impacts due to the built environment both during and post-construction, as well as identifying opportunities for water quality and flood control retrofits. Charlene is an expert in the design and installation oversight of innovative stormwater treatment techniques such as green roofs, cisterns, permeable pavements, submerged gravel wetlands, and bioretention cells in addition to traditional treatment practices such as filters and basins. She has managed significant contracts for both public and private sector clients, using a collaborative project approach and management style.
Richmond International Airport The north parking garage is the fourth and final covered garage necessary to support the new terminal expansion. HG Design Studio designed new irrigated landscape plantings and pedestrian routes that provide a continuous and cohesive connection from the RIC grounds surrounding the garage buildings to the main terminal. We created a schematic landscape design that enhances the North Garage, the entrances and signage; developed the design including hardscape layout and materials plan, as well as a schematic grading plan and created a landscape plan and detailed site developments and furnishings. In addition, HG completed several other projects at Richmond International Airport including the landscape master plan, designs for the Airport Drive streetscape, and enhancements to the terminal entrance, valet parking area and cell phone lot B.

Corporate Campus Headquarters HG currently holds the Civil Engineering Term Contract for this Goochland campus. We infuse our rich design history of landscape architecture with solid civil engineering and have worked with the client to renovate all buildings and new construction. Our contributions to the design included the entry plaza with complex fountain design; pedestrian crosswalks connecting the buildings with the parking deck; a suspended bridge entry to one building; and an attractive, sustainable, installation of native plant plan to tie the campus into the surrounding natural area and stormwater management. In our capacity as civil/landscape consultants, we have collaborated with several architectural firms, including Odell, Gensler, HLW, SMBW, Leo A. Daly, as well as Jones Lang Lasalle.

St. Francis Medical Center | Bon Secours Health System St. Francis Medical Center is a 45-acre medical campus that comprises a 130-bed acute care hospital, an attached six-story medical office building and two freestanding medical office buildings. In lieu of a sea of asphalt as the first thing greeting hospital guests, the team at HG created a site plan that features a tree-lined boulevard with pedestrianscale lighting, and a series of smaller parking lots on either side, making the walk from the car the first in a series of soothing, calming measures designed to welcome guests. At the entry, a large central fountain and vine-covered pergolas soften the face of the hospital building. At the back of the hospital a sunken chapel garden is one of the signature features of the hospital. Nestled between the retaining wall for the parking lot 16 feet above, and the hospital building, this long, narrow, potentially-challenging space presented HG with an opportunity to create something spectacular. Long pergolas line either side of the garden, and a cast stone gazebo at one end not only creates a lovely focal point, but completes the garden which has become a popular site for weddings. We designed a reflecting pool and granite runnel water feature to add the soothing sights and sounds of running water, and our plant palette of mixed evergreens, deciduous shrubs and herbaceous perennials provides year-round interest. Both the front entry and the chapel garden contributed to the Medical Center being named America’s Most Beautiful Hospital by Soliant Health in 2011. In making this distinction, organizers cited the landscaping that “welcomes patients and visitors to relax and regenerate.�

University of Virginia Civil Engineering Term Contract HG Design Studio was awarded the Term Contract for Civil Engineering Services at the University of Virginia in March of 2016. Our responsiveness, reasonable fees, and quality work products have quickly made us a highly valued consultant to the University. The highest compliment a client can give is to recommend us to others; UVA personnel have been recommending us as good partners to their other consultants, the University of Virginia foundation, and to outside architects.
UVA Davenport Field This project expands the existing Davenport Field stadium along the right field line; relocates the home and visitors bull pens; renovates the left field bleachers; provides an enhanced entry plaza; treats stormwater for quality and quantity control; and expands parking for the stadium. During the schematic design process, HG Design Studio provided multiple design iterations to align the aesthetic vision for the project with the needs of the athletics department and the construction budget. Because of baseball season accommodation, HG adhered to an aggressive completion schedule, and the stadium re-opened in time for Opening Day on February 20, 2018.

MeadWestVaco Headquarters (now West Rock) As one of only three buildings in the United States to receive the highest Green Globes rating of four globes from the Green Building Initiative, the MeadWestVaco headquarters building at Foundry Park reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability. The project includes sustainable landscape strategies such as intensive and extensive vegetative roofs, drip irrigation, native plants, and light colored paving. The design team was faced with the challenge of creating an entrance plaza on top of the underground parking structure. The solution was to reduce the amount of hardscape by introducing intensive and semi intensive vegetative roof gardens. These roof gardens continue onto the roof terrace where an extensive vegetative roof is the foreground for panoramic views of the James River. The building sits on a site that slopes more than thirty feet towards the river. The landscape architects worked closely with the architect to create parallel stairs inside and outside the building that lead from the lobby level to the cafeteria and dining terrace and then down to the fitness center at street level. The dining terrace is terraced into the hillside with stone walls that are partially constructed of stone that was salvaged from the site. The curved edges are in contrast to the straight lines of the building and are a reminder of the Kanawha canal which used to cross a portion of the site. The hillside is planted with a mix of native plants including Switchgrass, River Birch, Sycamores, Serviceberry and Dogwood.
Longwood University, High Street Gateway HG worked with the team architects on designs for several gateways to Longwood University. The materials and design are in keeping with the historic school’s formal campus and colonial architecture. In addition to the gateways, we designed plaza improvements, streetscape upgrades and planting designs in preparation for the Vice Presidential Debate held at the University in late 2016. James Madison University, Chandler Courtyard Renovation Sustainability and stormwater management were the driving forces behind the Chandler Courtyard project. A busy 40-year-old crumbling concrete courtyard surrounded by three dormitories and an academic building was redesigned to reduce impervious area and add green space. The design ties together the adjacent buildings with a series of open green spaces and intimate seating configurations. The pre-development impervious surface area of the courtyard was decreased by a quarter of an acre and an overall storm-water management strategy was incorporated. Stormwater runoff headed for the lake was reduced in quantity and improved in quality through the use of bio-retention areas. The bio-filtration planters manage stormwater on-site and provide lush gardens in the middle of the courtyard. The courtyard was also designed to accommodate the circulation needs of the student dorm population. Beach volleyball and an outdoor dining terrace with a view of the lake are popular features within the space.

HG has enjoyed helping this corporate client create a campus that matches the character of this software firm. They wanted their grounds to have a fun, whimsical atmosphere loaded with amenities to attract and maintain the best and brightest employees. Our design work over the years has included an orchard, a mini-golf course, sculpture garden, tennis court, entry walls and colorful plantings for their Powhatan campus.

The Sauer Center The Sauer Center is a 40 acre mixed-use city infill project anchored by a new Whole Foods store. HG Design Studio provided the master plan, which includes a 125unit apartment complex with high-end amenities and several office buildings such as the C.F Sauer Company headquarters, which will receive a complete renovation. Several of the buildings on the site are historic and will be fully restored while new buildings are also added. Efforts are being made to maintain an urban look and improve walkability by providing a pedestrian plaza and corridors throughout the site. The plan also includes a GRTC Pulse station, streetscaping along Broad Street, and a parking deck servicing the apartment complex and the historic Putney building. The entire site will be upgraded to be ADA accessible.

Bon Secours, Center for Healthy Living (After) This urban renewal project creates a welcoming presence in one of Richmond’s most at-risk areas. Renovated in conjunction with longtime client, Bon Secours, who has operated a community hospital in the East End of Richmond for decades, the project demonstrates the commitment to investing in this neighborhood near some of the city’s most vulnerable populations. HG Design Studio was tasked with transforming a decayed, abandoned and blighted site into a pedestrian friendly outdoor park, with benches (which are almost always full) and a reuse of the gas station canopy to provide shade to benches and tables below. This adaptive reuse project converted a dilapidated gas station, Parsley’s, into a place where members of the community can meet, chat, and enjoy a cup of coffee. The center also gives employees of the Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital – located just across the street – a place to take a break and engage with members of the community. Previously, there was nowhere to wander outside the hospital walls. A new 1,800 square foot addition will be home to the Front Porch Café, a coffee shop operated by Church Hill Activities and Tutoring (CHAT) to provide job training and build life skills for young adults in the area, many of whom lack older adult role models. HG Design Studio is honored to be part of the design and construction team that benefits the community and is spurring more economic development in the area.
