HG intentionally maintains a small firm culture, even though we routinely compete on projects with much larger firms. We have found that clients prefer to work with the same senior staff that appeared on the submittal and attend the interview. We are keen on customer service and invite you to call the owners/partners whenever necessary. This way, we maintain relationships‌over 80% of our clientele is repeat business. We have active projects in Virginia from Blacksburg to Virginia Beach, and D.C to South Boston.
Dave Gerstenmaier, PLA Founding Partner and Director of Design For over 30 years, Dave has accumulated an extensive and award-winning portfolio in landscape architectural design and land planning in Virginia. He started his own firm in 1991, and built a reputation for effective project delivery balancing cost, time, and quality design. In 2000, he took the helm of H&G Landscape Architects in Richmond and catapulted the firm into the preeminent landscape architectural and land planning firm in the region. Clients appreciate Dave’s passion and responsiveness resulting from the small-size firm mindset, but creative ingenuity usually characteristic of a metropolitan practice that has distinguished the firm’s work. Through Dave’s creative land planning, and design of the courtyards and grounds at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, the campus was designated “America’s Most Beautiful Hospital,” and in that same year, Dave was the recipient of The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture Impact Award for Landscape Architecture.
Charlene Harper, PE, LEED AP Senior Partner and Director of Engineering Charlene has more than 20 years of experience in the fields of water resources and site development specializing in low impact development and innovative stormwater treatment designs, stormwater concepts for federal projects, and compliance strategies for MS-4 and industrial stormwater permit programs. Charlene is an expert in the design and installation oversight of innovative stormwater treatment techniques such as green roofs, cisterns, permeable pavements, submerged gravel wetlands, and bioretention cells in addition to traditional treatment practices such as filters and basins. She has managed significant contracts for both public and private sector clients, using a collaborative project approach and management style.
Randy Biltz, PLA Partner and Director of Project Management Randy is dedicated to combining practical design solutions with real world sensibilities. With almost twenty years of experience in the industry, Randy is astutely aware of the constructibility of a design, and how to minimize a client’s expense without sacrificing a project’s delivery. He is a graduate of the Davis School of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design at West Virginia University, and at HG, he has excelled at getting the job done right, within budget and on time. Randy’s plain-spoken but knowledgeable manner resonates with both the commercial and residential client, and he has achieved the rare skill set of designing and managing projects from the very small, like a landscape plan, to the sizable, like a large mixed-use development with varied amenities, and every variable in-between.
Corporate Campus Headquarters HG Design Studio was contracted to perform Civil Engineering and Landscape Architecture for a series of projects for this private campus,, incorporating two new buildings, extensive outdoor amenities, green space, and a second parking deck. Emphasis was placed on collaborative outdoor green space, pedestrian connectivity and environmentally responsible campus features. A complex and sleek entry fountain and plaza design was vital to the clients desire to attract top talent, as well as views and connections to and from other buildings. The centrally located meadow and stormwater management combination provides most common vista from each building. A pedestrian bridge designed by HG spans stormwater rain garden filtration system. HG navigated topography with a series of steps and a ramp system designed by HG, as well as an intricate native plant plan to tie the campus into the surrounding natural area. Client project schedule required diligence and internal planning to devote proper resources and priority to design and construction, as well as knowledge based construction administration. Other Civil Engineer and Landscape Architecture projects include the following: The Commons Outdoor Terrace: This project required high quality design and extensive construction administration. Dave worked directly with the client and Leo A Daly, an architecture firm out of Nebraska, on this project. The Den Renovation: HG collaborated with HLW Architects out of New York City to incorporate a new entry access and building extension between campus Buildings 5 and 6. Both Civil and Landscape Architecture services were offered. HG ensured that a continuity of the campus design standards were incorporated into the renovation project. Thoughtful consideration of new bike and pedestrian circulation, planting design and utility reconfigurations were all part of the final design. Town Center Refresh: An office campus facility expansion, HG worked with Gensler and their Schematic Design to deliver this project’s Design Development and CD’s for civil/landscape within one month’s turnaround. HG had to consider impact on existing utility ducts, grading and drainage, hardscape and landscape design. West Creek Village: Seeking a rare LEED-NC certification for a private owner, HG engaged in design and expansion of the site green space and amenities requiring integration with existing facilities, pedestrian connections, courtyard and garden, upper and lower patios, lighting, concrete ramp, retaining walls and metal handrails. HG partnered with architecture firm SMBW with substantial design completion in February 2017.

Westminster-Canterbury Richmond Expansion | Henrico County, VA At Westminster-Canterbury’s northside campus, HG Design Studio is working with SFCS Architects to assist the client with modernizing an older facility. Senior living has become a competitive market, and often driven by the younger generation, who values luxury and up-to-date facilities. In response, the creation of gardens, a Wellness Activity area above a new parking deck as well as the creation of a new Villa neighborhood is the objective to improve the campus. The roof of the parking deck will accommodate a variety of wellness components, which have all been determined through close coordination with WC staff and residents. Structured elements like pickleball courts, an exercise equipment fitness courtyard, and firepit and picnic shelter will be joined by gardens and open lawn areas for multipurpose uses. Land planning will integrate a collection of buildings from different eras into a sense of community and place. The new Villa neighborhood will be centered around a large Village Green, with pathways, gardens, and a dog park. Community garden beds will be located adjacent to the existing Cochrane Pond. Berms and dense plantings will screen the property from adjacent commercial development. A walking trail, which is among the most popular amenities with residents, will connect all parts of the large campus.

University of Virginia, Davenport Field | Charlottesville, VA The University of Virginia’s Davenport Field project was fast-paced from design through construction, following these design phases: programing, schematic design, design development, early sitework construction documents, final sitework construction documents, bid negotiations, and construction administration. HG worked closely with UVA Facilities Planning and Construction, our client; UVA Athletics, the end user; DLR and Grimm + Parker, the architects; 2RW, the MEP; and Martin Horn, the contractor, to develop designs and implement construction on a site that was occupied by the owner and sports teams throughout construction. Challenge 1: Occupied Site The Davenport Field project is part of a larger park and athletics complex which was occupied by both owners and users during construction. Our construction phasing was tailored to accommodate access for both users and contractors; to adjust work hours and access for events, camps, and competitions; and, to coordinate timing of outages and access with owner’s scheduling needs. • HG developed an early site package to relocate utilities in advance of construction and during off-season times for the adjacent Lannigan track and field stadium. The early utility relocation extended water service and power duct banks to the project site; the routes for these lines would have impeded larger construction access had they not been completed early. • Work was phased to maintain fire and delivery access through the site during construction, and schedules for access and delivery needs were coordinated during the weekly construction meetings. • Temporary paths and bridges were constructed to route athletes and coaches around the construction zones to the adjacent facilities in use. Alternative access to the fields adjacent to the Dorey competition field will be an important consideration. Additionally, staging construction to limit impacts to existing infrastructure is imperative. University of Virginia, Davenport Field | Charlottesville, VA Challenge 2: Stormwater Management The existing stormwater best management practices (BMPs) at Davenport Field were not sufficient to account for the new impervious cover; therefore, innovative stormwater measures for the tight site were required. HG studied the larger regional watershed and determined that downstream channels were sufficient to handle large storm events. Small storm events and water quality improvements were achieved through the use of high-flow media filters “hidden in the landscape islands, pervious pavement in the overflow parking lot, and an underground infiltration chamber. The high-flow media filters are small footprint rain gardens that drain very quickly during rain events and can be nestled into slightly oversized parking lot islands or other available green spaces. Additional Project Highlights: Vehicular circulation, fire access, and pedestrian circulation shared a single, 15-foot wide asphalt road prior to the expansion project at Davenport Field. Through the limited use of site walls, HG addressed the site pinch-point to create a separated pedestrian and vehicular zones. A 20-foot road provides vehicular, fire truck and delivery access; pedestrian crossings are limited and demarcated by table-top cross-walks which visually and physically cue drivers to slow for pedestrians. An 8-foot sidewalk with landscaping brings pedestrians to the ticketing plaza. And for the first time, there are ADA and VIP parking spaces located at the ticketed entrance to the field.
Sheltering Arms Rehabilitation Institute | Goochland County, VA The new SARI hospital was master planned to provide space for future inpatient and outpatient buildings and services. This project includes 114 inpatient beds, a central rehabilitation gym, a laboratory, a pharmacy, a kitchen and cafeteria, administrative offices, surface parking, site and utility development, and more. The site is close to major roads and interstates and was developed to support not only the initial building but also future expansion. The owner wishes this project to become a destination site for the specialized services being offered. As such, access to the campus and offered services was developed with both the patients and the care-givers in mind such that outside experts and researchers will be drawn to the facility. The landscape design approach utilizes native and adapted native plants as well as drought tolerant species. An orchestrated sequence of flowering ornamental trees leads the traveler to the auto-court and main building entrance. the parking lot islands are planted with shade trees, low shrubs and groundcover. At the main entrance to the building, there is colored concrete paving with a dominant scoring pattern to distinguish this area from all the other standard collector walk concrete. Remaining walkways are poured in place, gray concrete. Ornamental LED light bollards are located at the patient arrival area. Low voltage LED landscape lighting is located near the entrance to the building. Attractive metal benches with backs and metal trash cans are located near the front door.

James Madison University, Chandler Courtyard | Harrisonburg, VA Sustainability and stormwater management were the driving forces behind the Chandler Courtyard project. A busy 40-year-old crumbling concrete courtyard surrounded by three dormitories and an academic building was redesigned to reduce impervious area and add green space. The design ties together the adjacent buildings with a series of open green spaces and intimate seating configurations. The pre-development impervious surface area of the courtyard was decreased by a quarter of an acre and an overall storm-water management strategy was incorporated. Stormwater runoff headed for the lake was reduced in quantity and improved in quality through the use of bio-retention areas. The bio-filtration planters manage stormwater on-site and provide lush gardens in the middle of the courtyard. The courtyard was also designed to accommodate the circulation needs of the student dorm population. Beach volleyball and an outdoor dining terrace with a view of the lake are popular features within the space.

The Landing at Swift Creek | Moseley, VA When StyleCraft Homes decided to build a luxury residential community along the Swift Creek Reservoir, HG Design Studio understood what the discriminating demographic would appreciate and expect. The Landing at Swift Creek design plan not only enhanced the already the peaceful, wooded setting on which the charming neighborhood of spacious houses was neatly tucked, but also created more value by way of fashioning appealing and unique amenities. HG’s land plan facilitated housing lots to nestle around the waterfront and created an outdoor lifestyle amenity connecting homeowners to the lake via a private dock and pavilion, with canoe/kayak storage area. We included a cozy patio with fire pit for gatherings, and provided environmental services and site landscaping. HG was also tasked with developing an entrance feature that was grand enough to draw home buyers focus before Woolridge Road was expanded, while still designing the correct proportions once the road was widened.

New Post on the Rappahannock | Spotsylvania, VA
New Post is a master-planned residential community nestled between Ruffins Pond and the Rappahannock River in Spotsylvania County. Today’s consumers demand high quality amenities and well-planned, pedestrian friendly neighborhoods. HG Design Studio was retained to design these important spaces to ensure the development delivered. Residents will enjoy gorgeous waterfront home sites, a community center with a pool, a boat ramp, and private access to the Rappahannock for boating, swimming and fishing. The first focal point is the main entry identification sign along Route 2, which functions as an important branding position for the community, so HG considered the luxury of the neighborhood, as well as it functionality. The second focal point is a secondary entry on Route 17, that features a pavilion and gateway columns created by our designers. HG designed the streetscape along Premier Street and New Post Boulevard, two of the main streets within the residential development, with the understanding that our client’s clients would make home buying decisions based on the appearance of the entire planned community. Our designers participated in the VDOT negotiations to gain approval for these streetscape designs and focal features. We then continued our relationship with Tricord by designing the pool and recreation area, and a third focal point for the Estates entry.

Chickahominy Falls | Hanover County, VA HG Design Studio is proud to have been a part of planning this unique community. Dave Gerstenmaier created a master plan that includes 400 single-family units on 200 acres with a twist on its farmland roots. Chickahominy Falls is the Richmond area’s first neighborhood that speaks to a farm-to-table and alternative trends to the conventional neighborhood template. Empty nesters and retirees are attracted to a concept that will blend suburban clubhouse living with professionally managed organic farming, producing fresh, local, healthy fruits, veggies, and foods while creating a wonderful and unique outdoor amenity for the residents. Farm-lets or Pocket-Gardens will be dotted throughout the neighborhood, alongside other HG designs around the clubhouse, pool, green spaces and play spaces. The community is planned for the 55+ age group with opportunities to experience and enjoy outdoor activities and healthier choices of food. HG Design Studio assisted with all levels of initial planning and zoning for the neighborhood and its adjacent 10-acre farm, along with designing open and gathering outdoor spaces, walking trails, bike trails around the river and shared spaces. HG connected the developer with a national organic farming vendor and worked with the natural topography of the site for placemaking of the gardens. With multiple wetland areas cutting up the site, a grid style development would not work. Our designers let the land dictate where our sections lines would be. Once sections were defined, we could work with the grades to see what type of product would best work in those areas. The wetlands and other lowlying areas became ideal areas for walking trails that connect the whole project together. HG also provided landscape and lighting plans for each section and worked with the team to design and implement a sales and marketing center on the farm. For Cornerstone Development, a commitment to environmental preservation and sustainability is important, so HG is tasked with adhering to the low-impact community plan. State-of-the-art conservation practices will protect mature hardwoods, watersheds and the river.

An adult pool was designed with ample seating, adjacent to the recreation pool. A permanent shade structure was also designed to provide refuge from the sun. The structure was placed between the adult pool and recreation pool so that both pool users could take advantage of it. In addition, design services included the tennis court complex built next to the pool area.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Rose Garden Master Plan For the rose garden area at the botanical garden, our client wanted a place not just to showcase dozens of varieties of roses, but a pleasant, quiet path with plenty of restful seating where visitors to the garden can rest and enjoy the beauty of the gardens and the views of the lake beyond. HG Design Studio was retained by Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the Rose Garden, a daily attraction for visitors, and is also the perfect location for social gatherings, weddings, and musical events. The Botanical Garden took this opportunity to fine tune this major garden feature and greatly improve and expand the rose garden plantings as well. Design challenges included redesign of the paving material to improve safety and maintainability while providing adequate space for events. Another challenge was in bringing purpose and a finished look to the turf hillside. HG designed a simple but elegant solution in the form of a terraced lawn which links the Central Garden and Conservatory to the Rose Garden and patio, with views of the lake beyond. We designed the drainage and grading to provide the well-drained soils preferred by roses, and to encourage the lawn to drain quickly after storm events.
