HG’s foundation is in creative problem solvers that employ a collaborative cross-discipline approach to ensure strong solutions for our clients. In our decades of design in Virginia, we have amassed a vast portfolio of work in all sectors, including healthcare, academic projects, residential, municipal, and private and public development.

Dave Gerstenmaier, PLA President and Director of Design For over 30 years, Dave has accumulated an extensive and award-winning portfolio in landscape architectural design and land planning in Virginia. He started his own firm in 1991, and built a reputation for effective project delivery balancing cost, time, and quality design. In 2000, he took the helm of H&G Landscape Architects in Richmond and catapulted the firm into the preeminent landscape architectural and land planning firm in the region. Clients appreciate Dave’s passion and responsiveness resulting from the small-size firm mindset, but creative ingenuity usually characteristic of a metropolitan practice that has distinguished the firm’s work. Through Dave’s creative land planning, and design of the courtyards and grounds at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, the campus was designated “America’s Most Beautiful Hospital,” and in that same year, Dave was the recipient of The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture Impact Award for Landscape Architecture.

Charlene Harper, PE, LEED AP Director of Engineering and Design Partner Charlene has more than 20 years of experience in the fields of water resources and site development specializing in low impact development and innovative stormwater treatment designs, stormwater concepts for federal projects, and compliance strategies for MS-4 and industrial stormwater permit programs. Her work focuses on the reduction of environmental impacts due to the built environment both during and post-construction, as well as identifying opportunities for water quality and flood control retrofits. Charlene is an expert in the design and installation oversight of innovative stormwater treatment techniques such as green roofs, cisterns, permeable pavements, submerged gravel wetlands, and bioretention cells in addition to traditional treatment practices such as filters and basins. She has managed significant contracts for both public and private sector clients, using a collaborative project approach and management style.

West Broad Village Master Plan | Henrico County, VA

LOCATION Henrico County, VA

West Broad Village is a 115-acre mixed-use development located at West Broad Street and I-64 in western Henrico County, Virginia. The development combines residential, retail, office, hotel, and recreational uses all within a walkable community. HG Design Studio was retained by the developer during rezoning to work with the architect in developing an open space plan, conceptual park design, and landscape standards for streetscapes and screening. We prepared a comprehensive open space plan and conceptual designs for the main street park, community clubhouse and pool area, residential courtyards, and the linear park. The village buildings and open spaces connect through the urban streetscape network. Combining conceptual plans, images, and textual descriptions, the project team generated detailed design standards for the rezoning submittal.

Corporate Campus Headquarters Master Plan | Goochland County, VA HG currently holds the Civil Engineering Term Contract for this Goochland campus. We infuse our rich design history of landscape architecture with solid civil engineering and have worked with the client to renovate all buildings and new construction. Our contributions to the design included the entry plaza with complex fountain design; pedestrian crosswalks connecting the buildings with the parking deck; a suspended bridge entry to one building; and an attractive, sustainable, installation of native plant plan to tie the campus into the surrounding natural area and stormwater management. In our capacity as civil/landscape consultants, we have collaborated with several architectural firms, including Odell, Gensler, HLW, SMBW, Leo A. Daly, as well as Jones Lang Lasalle.

The Sauer Center Master Plan | Richmond, VA The Sauer Center is a 40 acre mixed-use city infill project anchored by a new Whole Foods store. HG Design Studio provided the master plan, which includes a 125unit apartment complex with high-end amenities and several office buildings such as the C.F Sauer Company headquarters, which will receive a complete renovation. Several of the buildings on the site are historic and will be fully restored while new buildings are also added. Efforts are being made to maintain an urban look and improve walkability by providing a pedestrian plaza and corridors throughout the site. The plan also includes a GRTC Pulse station, streetscaping along Broad Street, and a parking deck servicing the apartment complex and the historic Putney building. The entire site will be upgraded to be ADA accessible.

St. Francis Medical Center Master Plan St. Francis Medical Center is a 45-acre medical campus that comprises a 130-bed acute care hospital, an attached six-story medical office building and two freestanding medical office buildings. In lieu of a sea of asphalt as the first thing greeting hospital guests, the team at HG created a site plan that features a tree-lined boulevard with pedestrianscale lighting, and a series of smaller parking lots on either side, making the walk from the car the first in a series of soothing, calming measures designed to welcome guests. At the entry, a large central fountain and vine-covered pergolas soften the face of the hospital building. At the back of the hospital a sunken chapel garden is one of the signature features of the hospital. Nestled between the retaining wall for the parking lot 16 feet above, and the hospital building, this long, narrow, potentially-challenging space presented HG with an opportunity to create something spectacular. Long pergolas line either side of the garden, and a cast stone gazebo at one end not only creates a lovely focal point, but completes the garden which has become a popular site for weddings. We designed a reflecting pool and granite runnel water feature to add the soothing sights and sounds of running water, and our plant palette of mixed evergreens, deciduous shrubs and herbaceous perennials provides year-round interest. Both the front entry and the chapel garden contributed to the Medical Center being named America’s Most Beautiful Hospital by Soliant Health in 2011. In making this distinction, organizers cited the landscaping that “welcomes patients and visitors to relax and regenerate.

St. Francis Cancer Institute | Bon Secours Health System The Cancer Institute features a healing garden that is integrated into the design of the building. A wall of glass windows allow patients to enjoy the signature stone wall and water feature surrounded by colorful, lush plantings during long hours of treatment. We chose the warm stone to complement the building, and designed the wall as a backdrop for the fountain that also screens a nearby road. Created as a soothing, comfortable space for patients and family members, this natural, quiet garden provides relaxation that is away from the clinical environment. The team at HG included many specific design features with the patients in mind, such as substituting stone mulch for the typical shredded wood since the odor of wood mulch can sometimes be unpleasant to patients.

Capitol Square Master Plan | Richmond, VA HG Design Studio revised and updated the Master Plan for the Capitol Grounds which feature the Capitol building, a National Historic Landmark designed by Thomas Jefferson. Capitol Square serves a significant dual role as the historic seat of state government as well as being an urban oasis in downtown Richmond. The project team had to balance several competing interests in the master plan from historic preservationists, to sustainability activists, to state legislators. We established guidelines for daily, weekly and ongoing maintenance; future landscape and hardscape installations; and addressing safety concerns and citizen complaints. We created recommendations for access, circulation and parking; hardscape materials; site elements; vegetation and topography, all within the context of preserving the prominent features of this important and historic site. We also gave consideration to future maintenance with a focus on less labor-intensive practices. Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Rose Garden Master Plan For the rose garden area at the botanical garden, our client wanted a place not just to showcase dozens of varieties of roses, but a pleasant, quiet path with plenty of restful seating where visitors to the garden can rest and enjoy the beauty of the gardens and the views of the lake beyond. HG Design Studio was retained by Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the Rose Garden, a daily attraction for visitors, and is also the perfect location for social gatherings, weddings, and musical events. The Botanical Garden took this opportunity to fine tune this major garden feature and greatly improve and expand the rose garden plantings as well. Design challenges included redesign of the paving material to improve safety and maintainability while providing adequate space for events. Another challenge was in bringing purpose and a finished look to the turf hillside. HG designed a simple but elegant solution in the form of a terraced lawn which links the Central Garden and Conservatory to the Rose Garden and patio, with views of the lake beyond. We designed the drainage and grading to provide the well-drained soils preferred by roses, and to encourage the lawn to drain quickly after storm events.

Collegiate School Master Plan In the early 1990’s, Collegiate School retained HG to study the previous master plan and to develop new ideas that accelerated their goals for improved, high-quality educational facilities. The improvement of Upper, Middle, and Lower School classrooms, the addition of a Performing Arts Center, and the improvement of sports facilities were among their major goals. Major objectives for the campus included: strengthening the main entrance and identifying the center of campus in a way that respects and enhances the surrounding residential community; organizing and improving the safety of student/vehicular circulation; and beautifying and creating outdoor spaces for a multitude of uses from active play to quiet study. After the successful completion of Upper School and Middle School improvements, the Lower School campus renovation became a high priority. Like the outdated and inefficient classroom buildings, the exterior play spaces and vehicular/ pedestrian circulation patterns were conflicting and unsafe by modern standards. Completed in 2001, the improved Lower School Campus includes ample parking, age-appropriate equipment, and a combination of new architecture and site walls to provide secure containment for both active play areas and passive courtyard spaces.

We have completed multiple projects at the School over the years, including an overall main campus site plan, Watts Hall, Stuart Hall renovations, a play area, a maintenance building and the Darden Hall Parking Area. HG adapted the master plan of the school to the selected site and worked in tandem with the design team on all facets of the site work. Landscape architecture elements included planting design, irrigation design, hardscape design including pedestrian circulation, building entrances, dining terraces, lighting plans and other outdoor spaces. We also supervised the design and construction of a playground area, sidewalks, retaining walls, outdoor dining and amenities. Plans included the use of a bio-retention pond to address stormwater on the site while creating a lush green space adjacent to the building and along the existing road.

St. Joseph’s Villa Master Plan | Richmond, VA HG Design Studio addressed pedestrian and vehicular circulation through the preparation of hardscape and landscape development plans for the pedestrian mall, loop road, central garden, drop off shelters and landscape island around the St. Joseph statue. In addition to separating the pedestrians from the vehicular traffic, we helped develop clear pathways to the buildings, helping to unify the campus and create a sense of place. We also created illustrative documents that were used in fundraising efforts.

Christchurch School Christchurch School is a 225-student facility that operates year-round with summer programs focusing on education and sports activities with the added bonus of water-related activities such as sailing, water safety, and marine science. The 125-acre main campus is situated on a bluff overlooking the Rappahannock River with a small dock and boat storage facility on a sandy riverside beach. Over the years, HG has assisted the school with many projects including landscape and hardscape improvements to the parking lots, a dining terrace, a plaza between the science building and a dormitory, and the faculty housing area, in addition to revising and updating the campus master plan. The school retained HG to study the previous master plan and to develop new ideas to unify the overall campus and allow for future expansion. Major objectives for the campus included strengthening the main entrance, organizing and improving the safety of student/vehicular circulation, and beautifying and creating outdoor spaces for a multitude of uses from active play to quiet independent study.

Innsbrook Office Park Competition for corporate talent has increased, so when Highwoods Properties, purveyors of much of Innsbrook Office Park, decided to refresh and refurbish dated spaces, they contacted HG Design Studio to create sophisticated outdoor amenities that appeal and attract discriminating tenants. First in order was the aged signage at the corner of Cox Road and West Broad Street. HG sited a new sign concept and provided grading to elevate the sign in the median. By providing a 3D study of the intersection for future sign accent walls, the client was able to better express their entry vision. After completing base concept and planting plan, we coordinated with sign installer, irrigation, lighting and planting contractors to deliver the product. Phase two of the restoration consisted of creating an outdoor terrace plan for a 3,000 square foot rear deck at one of the office buildings in the park. (Approx. $350,000) Schematics and construction documents were prepared by HG, and we coordinated a structural review. Updated planting and enhanced pedestrian lighting were implemented, and were connected to existing trail system. The client then asked us to reconfigure the front entry drop off and add a plaza to complement the lobby renovation. Front entry area to be completed in Fall 2017. Highwoods II and the Saxon Building were part of the next phase of design updates. HG was tasked with renovating the entry and providing a parking study. A schematic study to renovate the main entry exterior into an urban plaza was an additional project for the client. As a result of working on time and budget with Highwoods, HG was referred to longtime tenant Markel, where we were commissioned to renovated the back amphitheater terrace to a more useable space that included an IPE deck and cable handrail. HG’s design provided more useable square footage to the rear terrace of the building by adding a floating deck over an existing sloped hillside. Updated planting and connections to the existing lakeside walk were instituted.

Virginia Historical Society Master Plan | Richmond, VA A $38 million fundraising campaign allowed the museum to present a friendlier face on the Boulevard, have a more prominent main entrance from its parking area, and tell a more compelling story of the museum. The focus was not on additional space, but making smarter use of the existing space. HG Design Studio’s Master Plan integrates the goal of easier, open access to all entrances with the museum’s architectural design. The columned front doorway and lobby had been described as intimidating by patrons, so the challenge for HG was to design the site with classical elements and a pedestrian-friendly gateway. At the main entrance, we designed a gracious lawn and planting beds to replace existing pavement, and the additional green space creates a connection to the adjacent Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Through our design, we achieved our clients’ vision of providing a welcoming exterior environment. Vehicular and traffic patterns, lighting and landscape plans, and standards for amenities complete the scope of landscape architecture services performed for the project.
