At HG, our landscape architects and civil engineers work side by side, combining aesthetic sensibility with technical acumen, which creates attractive yet functional solutions for your external built environment. Our design philosophy is that site design should perform required functions without distracting from the aesthetics of the buildings they serve.

HG intentionally maintains a small firm culture, even though we routinely compete on projects with much larger firms. We have found that clients prefer to work with the same senior staff that appeared on the submittal and attend the interview. We are keen on customer service and invite you to call the owners/partners whenever necessary. This way, we maintain relationships…over 80% of our clientele is repeat business. We have active projects in Virginia from Blacksburg to Virginia Beach, and D.C to South Boston.
Dave Gerstenmaier, PLA Founding Partner and Director of Design For over 35 years, Dave has accumulated an extensive and award-winning portfolio in landscape architectural design and land planning in Virginia. He started his own firm in 1991, and built a reputation for effective project delivery balancing cost, time, and quality design. In 2000, he took the helm of H&G Landscape Architects in Richmond and catapulted the firm into the preeminent landscape architectural and land planning firm in the region. Clients appreciate Dave’s passion and responsiveness resulting from the small-size firm mindset, but creative ingenuity usually characteristic of a metropolitan practice that has distinguished the firm’s work. Through Dave’s creative land planning, and design of the courtyards and grounds at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, the campus was designated “America’s Most Beautiful Hospital,” and in that same year, Dave was the recipient of The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture Impact Award for Landscape Architecture.
Charlene Harper, PE, PLA, LEED AP Senior Partner and Director of Engineering Charlene has more than 25 years of experience in the fields of water resources and site development specializing in low impact development and innovative stormwater treatment designs, stormwater concepts for federal projects, and compliance strategies for MS-4 and industrial stormwater permit programs. Charlene is an expert in the design and installation oversight of innovative stormwater treatment techniques such as green roofs, cisterns, permeable pavements, submerged gravel wetlands, and bioretention cells in addition to traditional treatment practices such as filters and basins. She has managed significant contracts for both public and private sector clients, using a collaborative project approach and management style.
Sheltering Arms Rehabilitation Institute | VCU Health & Sheltering Arms The new SARI hospital was master planned to provide space for future inpatient and outpatient buildings and services. This project includes 114 inpatient beds, a central rehabilitation gym, a laboratory, a pharmacy, a kitchen and cafeteria, administrative offices, surface parking, site and utility development, and more. The site is close to major roads and interstates and was developed to support not only the initial building but also future expansion. The owner wishes this project to become a destination site for the specialized services being offered. As such, access to the campus and offered services was developed with both the patients and the care-givers in mind such that outside experts and researchers will be drawn to the facility. The landscape design approach utilizes native and adapted native plants as well as drought tolerant species. An orchestrated sequence of flowering ornamental trees leads the traveler to the autocourt and main building entrance. the parking lot islands are planted with shade trees, low shrubs and groundcover. At the main entrance to the building, there is colored concrete paving with a dominant scoring pattern to distinguish this area from all the other standard collector walk concrete. Remaining walkways are poured in place, gray concrete. Ornamental LED light bollards are located at the patient arrival area. Low voltage LED landscape lighting is located near the entrance to the building. Attractive metal benches with backs and metal trash cans are located near the front door.

St. Francis Medical Center | Bon Secours Health System St. Francis Medical Center is a 45-acre medical campus that comprises a 130-bed acute care hospital, an attached six-story medical office building and two freestanding medical office buildings. In lieu of a sea of asphalt as the first thing greeting hospital guests, the team at HG created a site plan that features a tree-lined boulevard with pedestrianscale lighting, and a series of smaller parking lots on either side, making the walk from the car the first in a series of soothing, calming measures designed to welcome guests. At the entry, a large central fountain and vine-covered pergolas soften the face of the hospital building. At the back of the hospital a sunken chapel garden is one of the signature features of the hospital. Nestled between the retaining wall for the parking lot 16 feet above, and the hospital building, this long, narrow, potentially-challenging space presented HG with an opportunity to create something spectacular. Long pergolas line either side of the garden, and a cast stone gazebo at one end not only creates a lovely focal point, but completes the garden which has become a popular site for weddings. We designed a reflecting pool and granite runnel water feature to add the soothing sights and sounds of running water, and our plant palette of mixed evergreens, deciduous shrubs and herbaceous perennials provides year-round interest. Both the front entry and the chapel garden contributed to the Medical Center being named America’s Most Beautiful Hospital by Soliant Health in 2011. In making this distinction, organizers cited the landscaping that “welcomes patients and visitors to relax and regenerate.”

Cedarfield Senior Living | Henrico County, VA HG Design Studio was inserted into this large and multi-phased expansion project to provide landscape architecture for the gardens and exterior spaces surrounding the new Wellness Building, four additional courtyard gardens dotted throughout the property, and perimeter planting for additions to the Independent Living building and Household facility. Cedarfield is situated on 90 wooded acres, and the presentation of its grounds is integral to its mission to enrich the quality of life of its residents. An essential part of our charge was to create landscapes that conform and correspond with the existing campus, and to work in collaboration with the facilities staff, including the horticulturalist on plant selections.
LOCATION Henrico County, VA
Our landscape architects designed attractive, pedestrian-friendly garden spaces accessible to residents of all abilities. These included a Secret Garden courtyard, a Memory Care courtyard, a New Resident courtyard, and planting quadrangles adjacent to a loading dock and two building additions. Client and architectural input was integrated into the programming and schedule in order to attain consensus, desired budget, and design deliverables, including presentation of rendered landscape concepts. HG evaluated existing POD submittals for information relevant to the proposed design and coordinated plans with county officials to ensure compliance. Selection of plantings suitable for the area and the residents was part of our process, and HG solicited bids from contractors for preliminary estimates of construction budgets.

Westminster Canterbury Richmond Expansion | Richmond, VA At Westminster-Canterbury’s northside campus, HG Design Studio is working with SFCS Architects to assist the client with modernizing an older facility. Senior living has become a competitive market, and often driven by the younger generation, who values luxury and up-to-date facilities. In response, the creation of gardens, a Wellness Activity area above a new parking deck as well as the creation of a new Villa neighborhood is the objective to improve the campus. The roof of the parking deck will accommodate a variety of wellness components, which have all been determined through close coordination with WC staff and residents. Structured elements like pickleball courts, an exercise equipment fitness courtyard, and firepit and picnic shelter will be joined by gardens and open lawn areas for multipurpose uses. Land planning will integrate a collection of buildings from different eras into a sense of community and place. The new Villa neighborhood will be centered around a large Village Green, with pathways, gardens, and a dog park. Community garden beds will be located adjacent to the existing Cochrane Pond. Berms and dense plantings will screen the property from adjacent commercial development. A walking trail, which is among the most popular amenities with residents, will connect all parts of the large campus.

St. Mary’s Guest House | Bon Secours Health System The Evelyn D. Reinhart Guest House was designed to be a home away from home for families of patients at St. Mary’s Hospital, serving as respite for up to 16 families. HG took this project from the creation of schematic concepts through construction administration, creating a construction document package of hardscape plans, including a reflecting pool and walled gardens, landscape plans, irrigation plan and lighting plan. We also shepherded the plans through the City of Richmond’s approval process and assisted with requirements for the building’s goal of LEED certification. HG’s concepts for the garden space featured areas for private reflection as well as an area for gatherings of larger family groups. The landscape walls enclose visitors like an embrace, shielding them from public areas like the adjacent parking lot, in addition to providing a feeling of privacy for families supporting loved ones in the nearby hospital.

John Randolph Medical Center | HCA HG was tasked to help bolster the presence of the Hospital by improving visual access into the site and site circulation, creating opportunities to improve the grounds through gardens, walking paths, and terraces and also to develop a campus identity. HG provided a site analysis with regards to the desires of the client and created a list of opportunities for the campus. The master plan addressed: • Street Access - Create a 'greener' appearance throughout their street edges by burying utility lines, adding street trees, upgrading plantings, improving off-site pedestrian connections, and providing gateways into the site. • Building Access - Create strong visual clues to the entrances of the building, reconfigure vehicular circulation to reduce conflicts between ambulances/facilities/hospital patrons, and upgrade site design for critical building entrances. • Green Space - Create a fitness/walking trail around the campus to capture views of the Appomattox River, create Cafeteria terrace for employees/patrons, and upgrade central garden into a place to decompress and relax in nature. • Campus Identity - Create a campus standard in lighting, seating, and vehicular control. By having a consistent theme across the campus, the repeated patterns help establish a campus core.

The Cancer Institute features a healing garden that is integrated into the design of the building. A wall of glass windows allow patients to enjoy the signature stone wall and water feature surrounded by colorful, lush plantings during long hours of treatment. We chose the warm stone to complement the building, and designed the wall as a backdrop for the fountain that also screens a nearby road. Created as a soothing, comfortable space for patients and family members, this natural, quiet garden provides relaxation that is away from the clinical environment. The team at HG included many specific design features with the patients in mind, such as substituting stone mulch for the typical shredded wood since the odor of wood mulch can sometimes be unpleasant to patients.

Bon Secours, Center for Healthy Living This urban renewal project creates a welcoming presence in one of Richmond’s most at-risk areas. Renovated in conjunction with longtime client, Bon Secours, who has operated a community hospital in the East End of Richmond for decades, the project demonstrates the commitment to investing in this neighborhood near some of the city’s most vulnerable populations. HG Design Studio was tasked with transforming a decayed, abandoned and blighted site into a pedestrian friendly outdoor park, with benches (which are almost always full) and a reuse of the gas station canopy to provide shade to benches and tables below. This adaptive reuse project converted a dilapidated gas station, Parsley’s, into a place where members of the community can meet, chat, and enjoy a cup of coffee. The center also gives employees of the Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital – located just across the street – a place to take a break and engage with members of the community. Previously, there was nowhere to wander outside the hospital walls. A new 1,800 square foot addition will be home to the Front Porch Café, a coffee shop operated by Church Hill Activities and Tutoring (CHAT) to provide job training and build life skills for young adults in the area, many of whom lack older adult role models. HG Design Studio is honored to be part of the design and construction team that benefits the community and is spurring more economic development in the area.

School of Nursing Garden | Virginia Commonwealth University After the opening of the new School of Nursing, VCU contacted HG to help with the design of a garden for the area behind the building. As there was no funding available, HG collaborated with the University Architect and the School of Nursing leadership to prepare a garden concept on a pro bono basis. The resulting design and cost estimate was used as a basis for fundraising and we were later contracted to prepare construction documents. The VCU School of Nursing garden was designed to provide a peaceful place for nursing students as well as a place to honor the history of nursing education on the MCV campus. Part of the student experience involves work with real patients and their illnesses and the garden is an inviting place for them to relax, study and experience nature. The school’s more-than-100-year history is commemorated by the incorporation of cornerstones from now demolished buildings that housed the school. Our plan created a green space for the students with lush landscaping, two water features, quiet seating areas, flexible seating for dining or outdoor meetings, and a large lawn to accommodate a tent for special occasions. We also incorporated design solutions to correct a drainage problem adjacent to the site and address unforeseen site conditions.

Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center | Richmond, VA
The Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center is a state run assisted living facility on the campus of the McGuire VA Medical Center. HG Design Studio worked with the Department of Veterans Care and the project architect on site landscape architecture, the visitor courtyard and two special courtyard areas for Alzheimer’s patients. Carved out of the leftover space between two buildings, one small courtyard allows patients to walk a paved circle, make use of various seating options or experience different textures through the hardscape materials and plant materials. The main Alzheimer’s courtyard is designed with seating and a shed to store gardening equipment for the occupants. The walking path allow allows for patients to complete a circle with no dead ends, and designers used different paving materials to emphasize entrances and exits to help with wayfinding. All plants and hardscape materials were chosen with safety in mind, and both Alzheimer’s courtyard spaces are secure with no outlets outside of the facility.

Beth Sholom Lifecare Community | Henrico County, VA HG Design Studio was retained by the owner to complete a comprehensive analysis of the whole campus of this village of long-term care, assisted living, memory support and independent living apartments. We studied pedestrian flow, landscape amenities and lighting for all the buildings, with an intensive focus on particular areas of the site. We considered locations for memorial plantings, focal elements, site amenities, and a raised garden for wheelchairs. HG also created a detailed set of plans for Penn Park featuring a planting design, pergola, paving patterns, seatwall, fence, arbor, wetland deck, and a separate area for interactive gardening in which the residents can tend to vegetables, herbs and flowers. The overall master planning contains hardscape, landscape, lighting and irrigation plans, and enhanced planting plans for the main entrances.
Winchester Senior Living | Winchester, VA HG is providing Landscape Architecture services for a new Senior Living Center in the heart of historic Winchester, on the site of the old Valley Health Hospital. Working collaboratively with Moseley Architects and Greenway Engineering, HG assisted the client in receiving City Council approval to proceed with the project, which has experienced opposition from the neighbors because of the scale of the building within this residential neighborhood. A beautiful and intensively planted landscape design was key to gaining approval to proceed. The property includes an existing building to remain, and will include a new structure which will accommodate independent living and memory-care facilities in addition to various amenities for residents. A corner park will serve both residents and the surrounding neighborhood, and several existing parking lots will be improved with upgraded planting. The site plan was submitted to the City of Winchester for approval in mid-October and building design is underway.
