At HG, our landscape architects and civil engineers work side by side, combining aesthetic sensibility with technical acumen, which creates attractive yet functional solutions for your external built environment. Our design philosophy is that site design should perform required functions without distracting from the aesthetics of the buildings they serve.

HG intentionally maintains a small firm culture, even though we routinely compete on projects with much larger firms. We have found that clients prefer to work with the same senior staff that appeared on the submittal and attend the interview. We are keen on customer service and invite you to call the owners/partners whenever necessary. This way, we maintain relationships…over 80% of our clientele is repeat business. We have active projects in Virginia from Blacksburg to Virginia Beach, and D.C to South Boston.
DAVE GERSTENMAIER, PLA Founding Partner and Director of Design For over 35 years, Dave has accumulated an extensive and award-winning portfolio in landscape architectural design and land planning in Virginia. He started his own firm in 1991, and built a reputation for effective project delivery balancing cost, time, and quality design. In 2000, he took the helm of H&G Landscape Architects in Richmond and catapulted the firm into the preeminent landscape architectural and land planning firm in the region. Clients appreciate Dave’s passion and responsiveness resulting from the small-size firm mindset, but creative ingenuity usually characteristic of a metropolitan practice that has distinguished the firm’s work. Through Dave’s creative land planning, and design of the courtyards and grounds at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, the campus was designated “America’s Most Beautiful Hospital,” and in that same year, Dave was the recipient of The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture Impact Award for Landscape Architecture.
CHARLENE HARPER, PE, PLA, LEED AP Senior Partner and Director of Engineering Charlene has more than 25 years of experience in the fields of water resources and site development specializing in low impact development and innovative stormwater treatment designs, stormwater concepts for federal projects, and compliance strategies for MS-4 and industrial stormwater permit programs. Her work focuses on the reduction of environmental impacts due to the built environment both during and post-construction, as well as identifying opportunities for water quality and flood control retrofits. Charlene is an expert in the design and installation oversight of innovative stormwater treatment techniques such as green roofs, cisterns, permeable pavements, submerged gravel wetlands, and bioretention cells in addition to traditional treatment practices such as filters and basins. She has managed significant contracts for both public and private sector clients, using a collaborative project approach and management style.
CORPORATE CAMPUS HEADQUARTERS | GOOCHLAND COUNTY, VA HG Design Studio was contracted to perform Civil Engineering and Landscape Architecture for a series of projects for this private campus,, incorporating two new buildings, extensive outdoor amenities, green space, and a second parking deck. Emphasis was placed on collaborative outdoor green space, pedestrian connectivity and environmentally responsible campus features. A complex and sleek entry fountain and plaza design was vital to the clients desire to attract top talent, as well as views and connections to and from other buildings. The centrally located meadow and stormwater management combination provides most common vista from each building. A pedestrian bridge designed by HG spans stormwater rain garden filtration system. HG navigated topography with a series of steps and a ramp system designed by HG, as well as an intricate native plant plan to tie the campus into the surrounding natural area. Client project schedule required diligence and internal planning to devote proper resources and priority to design and construction, as well as knowledge based construction administration. Other Civil Engineer and Landscape Architecture projects include the following: The Commons Outdoor Terrace: This project required high quality design and extensive construction administration. Dave worked directly with the client and Leo A Daly, an architecture firm out of Nebraska, on this project. The Den Renovation: HG collaborated with HLW Architects out of New York City to incorporate a new entry access and building extension between campus Buildings 5 and 6. Both Civil and Landscape Architecture services were offered. HG ensured that a continuity of the campus design standards were incorporated into the renovation project. Thoughtful consideration of new bike and pedestrian circulation, planting design and utility reconfigurations were all part of the final design. Town Center Refresh: An office campus facility expansion, HG worked with Gensler and their Schematic Design to deliver this project’s Design Development and CD’s for civil/ landscape within one month’s turnaround. HG had to consider impact on existing utility ducts, grading and drainage, hardscape and landscape design. West Creek Village: Seeking a rare LEED-NC certification for a private owner, HG engaged in design and expansion of the site green space and amenities requiring integration with existing facilities, pedestrian connections, courtyard and garden, upper and lower patios, lighting, concrete ramp, retaining walls and metal handrails. HG partnered with architecture firm SMBW with substantial design completion in February 2017.

KINSALE INSURANCE HEADQUARTERS | HENRICO COUNTY, VA The Kinsale Headquarters project includes a new 5 story office building and 4-level parking garage at the intersection of Maywill and Thalbro Streets. Apartments were built adjacent to the parking garage at a later date. A private road was built between the office building and garage to provide vehicular access to the garage and a front-dropoff and loading area for the office. Accented by the office building’s sculptural front canopy, street trees, and brick sidewalks, this private road provides a walkable connection between the buildings. The tip of the property where Maywill and Thalbro Streets intersect is visible to passing cars, and provides a foreground to the building. Trees and sidewalk line the edges of this space, encircling a lawn and central concrete paver terrace. The terrace is broken-up into smaller spaces by long raised concrete planters of varying heights, providing room for outdoor furniture that employees can enjoy. Trees in the planters and a future pergola will shade the terrace.

ANTHEM COURTYARD | HENRICO COUNTY, VA With the redesign of this courtyard at the Davis Center, located in Richmond, Virginia, Anthem is making a statement about the importance of wellness, vitality, and rejuvenation for its associates. Not simply a beautiful outdoor space for employees to appreciate visually, the new Wellness Courtyard will facilitate associates expanding their work life into the out-of-doors, giving them space for meetings, dining, conversations, play, exercise, group gatherings, or solitary reflection. Some studies show that access to natural, outdoor spaces can improve physical and mental health by reducing stress, depression, pain, and fatigue while enhancing immune function, concentration, and emotional resilience. There are several elements incorporated in this design which should improve the quality of work life for Anthem employees including group seating areas, curved pathways for strolling, raised garden beds, outdoor dining, an event lawn, spaces for games such as cornhole, and a contemplative corner with water feature. In contrast to the sterility of the typical indoor work environment, the Wellness Courtyard introduces a vibrant, varied environment to stimulate the senses and bring mental restoration. Use of natural materials like wood together with plantings and light shade structures subdivides the space into a series of outdoor rooms so that it gives people choices of how they want to use the courtyard, depending on their needs at any particular time. The courtyard is designed using principles of universal accessibility so that all employees, regardless of mobility status or other potential physical or mental challenges, can enjoy the space. The overall impact should be to prevent stress and burnout among Anthem employees by giving them a place to clear the mind and relax or exercise the body.

COSTAR HEADQUARTERS (FORMERLY WESTROCK) | RICHMOND, VA As one of only three buildings in the United States to receive the highest Green Globes rating of four globes from the Green Building Initiative, the MeadWestVaco headquarters building at Foundry Park reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability. The project includes sustainable landscape strategies such as intensive and extensive vegetative roofs, drip irrigation, native plants, and light colored paving. The design team was faced with the challenge of creating an entrance plaza on top of the underground parking structure. The solution was to reduce the amount of hardscape by introducing intensive and semi intensive vegetative roof gardens. These roof gardens continue onto the roof terrace where an extensive vegetative roof is the foreground for panoramic views of the James River. The building sits on a site that slopes more than thirty feet towards the river. The landscape architects worked closely with the architect to create parallel stairs inside and outside the building that lead from the lobby level to the cafeteria and dining terrace and then down to the fitness center at street level. The dining terrace is terraced into the hillside with stone walls that are partially constructed of stone that was salvaged from the site. The curved edges are in contrast to the straight lines of the building and are a reminder of the Kanawha canal which used to cross a portion of the site. The hillside is planted with a mix of native plants including Switchgrass, River Birch, Sycamores, Serviceberry and Dogwood.

BOATHOUSE AT SUNDAY PARK | CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA HG Design Studio was tasked with updating the event staging grounds at The Boathouse at Sunday Park in Brandermill. The owner contacted us because he was interested in updating the privacy and enhancing the lake views as well as the user experience. We upgraded the pedestrian circulation, addressed the circulation and path surfaces from the restaurant to the pavilion, the pavilion to the lawn, and drop off to the lawn. We also addressed the site drainage issues.

HG was tasked with assisting the architect with the design of the new outdoor dining terrace, and providing civil and landscape design for the perimeter of the terrace and surrounding land form affected by the expansion. We created bid documents showing how the addition would drain and how an existing storm sewer line and sanitary sewer line could be accommodated. HG served as construction manager, providing hands-on site supervision and working out a temporary pedestrian traffic pattern to keep the building accessible during construction. We were asked to bring smaller, local contractors to the table and bid out all the hardscape, grading, drainage, landscape and irrigation. When a communication pole and wire were encountered during construction, we were able to orchestrate working around the conflict while maintaining the integrity of the design since we were already on the site. In addition, we helped to keep costs down by working with trusted contractors, scrutinizing invoices, and making sure contracts were met to the complete satisfaction of our client. With two weeks of work to remain, the word came out that our client wanted the project done in half that time. Due to our strong relationship with the subcontractors and our ability to react quickly to the job site, we were able to stay on top of everything and even get our partners to work through the weekend. Our client was very appreciative of our efforts as the project was completed on their compressed time frame and was open for business. We were lauded for our ability to remain flexible as the scope of work changed, and to complete complex deliverables despite an aggressive deadline. As a result, the client has trust and a level of loyalty with the knowledge that with our supervision, the project will be completed beyond the satisfaction of all parties concerned.
THE SAUER CENTER | RICHMOND, VA HG Design Studio has balanced historical sensitivity with modern convenience while master planning and designing The Sauer Center, a 40-acre mixed-use city infill project anchored by a new Whole Foods store. HG Design Studio worked with the client to provide multiple planning options for the urban site, including a chic 125-unit apartment complex with posh amenities. Several office buildings, such as a historic renovation of the C.F Sauer Company headquarters, were also part of HG’s planning for the site. CF Sauer Company’s 100-year-old spice and food manufacturing facility remains onsite, but it’s many historic features have been restored, bringing it up to current design building code standards. The loading dock area in the rear has been redesigned to accommodate modern day trucks. A new Whole Foods grocery store was built in the location of the former Pleasants Hardware incorporating the historic Kaufman building into the design. In this design, there is outdoor dining under roof provided on two levels along West Broad Street. The new Whole Foods building maintains the street’s existing façade continuity along the right of way with parking to the west side in urban fashion and is not set back from the road in suburban style. It is a state-of-the-art facility incorporating electric charging stations in the parking lot for customer use and solar panels on the building roof tops. HG has worked with the developers to maintain an urban look and improve walkability at The Sauer Center. Our team planned and designed a pedestrian plaza with green space between the apartment complex and the historic Putney building, and pedestrian corridors throughout the site. An additional pedestrian gathering area/courtyard hardscape space leads out to a plaza along Hermitage Road with low polished granite seat walls and flag poles. The vacant land to the west was converted to surface parking, part of which will be used for a ‘farmers market’ during the warm months of the year. Car ports with solar panels cover many of the parking spaces, providing shade and electric power for the development. In fact, solar panels are on all the roofs of the buildings where possible. The plan also included a GRTC Pulse station, streetscaping along Broad Street, and a parking deck servicing the apartment complex and the Putney building.

INNSBROOK OFFICE PARK | HENRICO COUNTY, VA Competition for corporate talent has increased, so when Highwoods Properties, purveyors of much of Innsbrook Office Park, decided to refresh and refurbish dated spaces, they contacted HG Design Studio to create sophisticated outdoor amenities that appeal and attract discriminating tenants. First in order was the aged signage at the corner of Cox Road and West Broad Street. HG sited a new sign concept and provided grading to elevate the sign in the median. By providing a 3D study of the intersection for future sign accent walls, the client was able to better express their entry vision. After completing base concept and planting plan, we coordinated with sign installer, irrigation, lighting and planting contractors to deliver the product. Phase two of the restoration consisted of creating an outdoor terrace plan for a 3,000 square foot rear deck at one of the office buildings in the park. (Approx. $350,000) Schematics and construction documents were prepared by HG, and we coordinated a structural review. Updated planting and enhanced pedestrian lighting were implemented, and were connected to existing trail system. The client then asked us to reconfigure the front entry drop off and add a plaza to complement the lobby renovation. Front entry area to be completed in Fall 2017. Highwoods II and the Saxon Building were part of the next phase of design updates. HG was tasked with renovating the entry and providing a parking study. A schematic study to renovate the main entry exterior into an urban plaza was an additional project for the client. As a result of working on time and budget with Highwoods, HG was referred to longtime tenant Markel, where we were commissioned to renovated the back amphitheater terrace to a more useable space that included an IPE deck and cable handrail. HG’s design provided more useable square footage to the rear terrace of the building by adding a floating deck over an existing sloped hillside. Updated planting and connections to the existing lakeside walk were instituted.

HANCOCK VILLAGE | CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA Hancock Village is an 88-acre retail center located between Brandermill and Woodlake neighborhoods in Chesterfield County, Virginia. The center features numerous nationally recognized brands including a 200,000-square foot Wal-Mart Supercenter. The developer wanted to create a retail center which was well-lit, highly visible to Route 360, and met the strict conditions of the county’s planning commission. The most challenging aspect of the project was to keep the entire project very pedestrian-friendly while maximizing the opportunities for out-parcels. We designed a landscape plan that both met the county’s requirements and provided ample growth potential for future site development. Additionally, the pedestrian-friendly design included traffic circles, inviting landscaping, and brick walking paths. Finally, the lighting plan created a well-lit and safe environment without impacting the surrounding properties.

BON SECOURS, CENTER FOR HEALTHY LIVING | RICHMOND, VA This urban renewal project creates a welcoming presence in one of Richmond’s most at-risk areas. Renovated in conjunction with longtime client, Bon Secours, who has operated a community hospital in the East End of Richmond for decades, the project demonstrates the commitment to investing in this neighborhood near some of the city’s most vulnerable populations. HG Design Studio was tasked with transforming a decayed, abandoned and blighted site into a pedestrian friendly outdoor park, with benches (which are almost always full) and a reuse of the gas station canopy to provide shade to benches and tables below. This adaptive reuse project converted a dilapidated gas station, Parsley’s, into a place where members of the community can meet, chat, and enjoy a cup of coffee. The center also gives employees of the Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital – located just across the street – a place to take a break and engage with members of the community. Previously, there was nowhere to wander outside the hospital walls. A new 1,800 square foot addition will be home to the Front Porch Café, a coffee shop operated by Church Hill Activities and Tutoring (CHAT) to provide job training and build life skills for young adults in the area, many of whom lack older adult role models. HG Design Studio is honored to be part of the design and construction team that benefits the community and is spurring more economic development in the area.

THE CARITAS CENTER | RICHMOND, VA HG Design Studio is pleased to provide survey, civil engineering, land planning and design for the renovation of the existing building at this Richmond icon. At the onset of the project, we worked with the design team to establish parking and loading requirements, and verify turning movements for loading, fire, and garbage reconfiguration. Consulting and planning for re-zoning contingencies were scoped, along with site improvements plans for additional parking, and simple and inviting entrances. Consideration for the Manchester Canal watershed and determination of project services were part of the civil site plan, and HG worked with the architect and client to ensure compliance as well as attention to aesthetics. HG also established parking and loading requirements and developed a schematic site plan to include vehicular paving, pedestrian paving, and other hardscape and landscape elements.

The Cary Court Shopping Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is an example of the art deco architectural style. Built in the 1930’s, it stands as Richmond’s first strip shopping center. This new concept of parking in front of the stores made Cary Court a popular Richmond shopping destination. HG Design Studio worked on the redesign of the front parking lot, sidewalks, pedestrian seating and dining areas, and streetscape in the City of Richmond’s right of way along Cary Street. Specific site details included site lighting, fencing, and seating, planting, and paving details. In the rear, re-design of the parking lot, which extends to Belmont Street and Ellwood Avenue, included lighting, dumpster enclosures, and planting design. Parking lot design included addressing traffic flow, parking space, and planting island changes. Four large 12-inch diameter/caliper oak trees were installed in the front parking lot via cranes.
