HG intentionally maintains a small firm culture, even though we routinely compete on projects with much larger firms. We have found that clients prefer to work with the same senior staff that appeared on the submittal and attend the interview. We are keen on customer service and invite you to call the owners/partners whenever necessary. This way, we maintain relationships…over 80% of our clientele is repeat business. We have active projects in Virginia from Blacksburg to Virginia Beach, and D.C to South Boston.

DAVE GERSTENMAIER, PLA Founding Partner and Director of Design For over 35 years, Dave has accumulated an extensive and award-winning portfolio in landscape architectural design and land planning in Virginia. He started his own firm in 1991, and built a reputation for effective project delivery balancing cost, time, and quality design. In 2000, he took the helm of H&G Landscape Architects in Richmond and catapulted the firm into the preeminent landscape architectural and land planning firm in the region. Clients appreciate Dave’s passion and responsiveness resulting from the small-size firm mindset, but creative ingenuity usually characteristic of a metropolitan practice that has distinguished the firm’s work. Through Dave’s creative land planning, and design of the courtyards and grounds at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, the campus was designated “America’s Most Beautiful Hospital,” and in that same year, Dave was the recipient of The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture Impact Award for Landscape Architecture.

CHARLENE HARPER, PE, PLA, LEED AP Senior Partner and Director of Engineering Charlene has more than 25 years of experience in the fields of water resources and site development specializing in low impact development and innovative stormwater treatment designs, stormwater concepts for federal projects, and compliance strategies for MS-4 and industrial stormwater permit programs. Her work focuses on the reduction of environmental impacts due to the built environment both during and post-construction, as well as identifying opportunities for water quality and flood control retrofits. Charlene is an expert in the design and installation oversight of innovative stormwater treatment techniques such as green roofs, cisterns, permeable pavements, submerged gravel wetlands, and bioretention cells in addition to traditional treatment practices such as filters and basins. She has managed significant contracts for both public and private sector clients, using a collaborative project approach and management style.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, CIVIL ENGINEERING TERM CONTRACT HG Design Studio was selected for the Civil Engineering Term Contract attributed to our collaborative, multi-disciplinary design approach, and UVA has given high marks to our performance for dozens of projects in the last 2 years. UVA appreciates our responsiveness and flexibility: on the Davenport Field Baseball Stadium Expansion project, we were told we “set the bar high” for quick turn-around of construction submittals and RFIs. HG has become design partners with our clients and treat their problems as our own. For example, we recently saved the University over $200,000 by redesigning the sanitary sewer for the baseball stadium while the project is still under construction; we were able to get approval for a crossing from CSX railroad in under a week! During construction of the Slaughter Hall Entrance Improvement project, we adapted our design to unknown field conditions during construction, which created a significant credit from the contractor. UVA also appreciates our innovation: we are working with the Office of the Architect and the Facilities and Maintenance Office to develop a landscape assessment tool that they can use to inspect grounds and prioritize site maintenance in a similar fashion to their building inspection program.

CHICKAHOMINY FALLS | HANOVER COUNTY, VA HG Design Studio is proud to have been a part of planning this unique community. Dave Gerstenmaier created a master plan that includes 400 single-family units on 200 acres with a twist on its farmland roots. Chickahominy Falls is the Richmond area’s first neighborhood that speaks to a farm-to-table and alternative trends to the conventional neighborhood template. Empty nesters and retirees are attracted to a concept that will blend suburban clubhouse living with professionally managed organic farming, producing fresh, local, healthy fruits, veggies, and foods while creating a wonderful and unique outdoor amenity for the residents. Farm-lets or Pocket-Gardens will be dotted throughout the neighborhood, alongside other HG designs around the clubhouse, pool, green spaces and play spaces. The community is planned for the 55+ age group with opportunities to experience and enjoy outdoor activities and healthier choices of food. HG Design Studio assisted with all levels of initial planning and zoning for the neighborhood and its adjacent 10-acre farm, along with designing open and gathering outdoor spaces, walking trails, bike trails around the river and shared spaces. HG connected the developer with a national organic farming vendor and worked with the natural topography of the site for placemaking of the gardens. With multiple wetland areas cutting up the site, a grid style development would not work. Our designers let the land dictate where our sections lines would be. Once sections were defined, we could work with the grades to see what type of product would best work in those areas. The wetlands and other low-lying areas became ideal areas for walking trails that connect the whole project together. HG also provided landscape and lighting plans for each section and worked with the team to design and implement a sales and marketing center on the farm. For Cornerstone Development, a commitment to environmental preservation and sustainability is important, so HG is tasked with adhering to the low-impact community plan. State-of-the-art conservation practices will protect mature hardwoods, watersheds and the river.

COLLEGE OF WILLIAM & MARY, ALUMNI HOUSE EXPANSION & RENOVATION HG Design Studio provided recommendations for a feasibility study for an addition to the Alumni House. We performed analysis of the capacity of existing utilities and created a stormwater management concept plan after a review of existing conditions, taking into consideration nearby construction, which will likely impact this site, and the need for compliance with state stormwater requirements for water quality. HG also designed the site layout and grading concepts to address the steep 17-20% average grades across the site. HG continued to provide civil engineering and landscape architecture on this project. The finished product is a signature design for W&M that respects the existing Alumni Center’s historic architecture as well as the college’s campus aesthetic.

THE SAUER CENTER | RICHMOND, VA HG Design Studio has balanced historical sensitivity with modern convenience while master planning and designing The Sauer Center, a 40-acre mixed-use city infill project anchored by a new Whole Foods store. HG Design Studio worked with the client to provide multiple planning options for the urban site, including a chic 125-unit apartment complex with posh amenities. Several office buildings, such as a historic renovation of the C.F Sauer Company headquarters, were also part of HG’s planning for the site. CF Sauer Company’s 100-year-old spice and food manufacturing facility remains onsite, but it’s many historic features have been restored, bringing it up to current design building code standards. The loading dock area in the rear has been redesigned to accommodate modern day trucks. A new Whole Foods grocery store was built in the location of the former Pleasants Hardware incorporating the historic Kaufman building into the design. In this design, there is outdoor dining under roof provided on two levels along West Broad Street. The new Whole Foods building maintains the street’s existing façade continuity along the right of way with parking to the west side in urban fashion and is not set back from the road in suburban style. It is a state-of-the-art facility incorporating electric charging stations in the parking lot for customer use and solar panels on the building roof tops. HG has worked with the developers to maintain an urban look and improve walkability at The Sauer Center. Our team planned and designed a pedestrian plaza with green space between the apartment complex and the historic Putney building, and pedestrian corridors throughout the site. An additional pedestrian gathering area/courtyard hardscape space leads out to a plaza along Hermitage Road with low polished granite seat walls and flag poles. The vacant land to the west was converted to surface parking, part of which will be used for a ‘farmers market’ during the warm months of the year. Car ports with solar panels cover many of the parking spaces, providing shade and electric power for the development. In fact, solar panels are on all the roofs of the buildings where possible. The plan also included a GRTC Pulse station, streetscaping along Broad Street, and a parking deck servicing the apartment complex and the Putney building.

RICHMOND RACEWAY REIMAGINED | HENRICO COUNTY, VA HG Design Studio is providing civil engineering and landscape architecture services for Richmond Raceway Reimagined, a $30 million infield redevelopment project by International Speedway Corporation (ISC). The new project will bring a variety of enhanced amenities for fans, teams, sponsors and other stakeholders to the iconic Richmond infield. HG’s first project with ISC was an incredible opportunity to work closely with Henrico County administration and staff on a very fast-paced, high profile project. HG facilitated meetings between ISC and the County to introduce the project concepts, goals, and schedule needs at all levels during the programming and schematic design phase. As the project was on an expedited schedule, HG also held meetings early in the design development phase to engage review staff and explore compliance options for stormwater management, permitting, traffic and utility models in particular. When concerns about the aging water system and meter capacity were raised, HG suggested breaking the POD into phases in order to study the situation with DPU without impacting the construction schedule. Working closely with DPU staff on multiple modeling iterations led to an innovative metering solution that saved ISC significant money while also improving water and fire flows to the Raceway Complex.

Richmond Raceway Reimagined will provide the facility a completely redesigned and modernized infield to Richmond. Race fans will be able to get closer than ever to NASCAR’s best with new Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series garages and a fan viewing walkway providing full immersion into the sport. Fans will also be able to watch race cars complete their runs through inspection stations in the new infield. In addition to the new garage walkways and inspection viewing areas, other new attractions include expansive Richmond infield social and engagement areas with concessions. Gatorade Victory Lane will now be staged in closer view of the grandstands for fans to have a better experience celebrating with Richmond race winners. The location will provide new fan engagement opportunities for pre-race access, driver appearances, and entertainment programming. An 80-person club experience with roof access will overlook the new Gatorade Victory Lane as part of the modernized infield. Two new garage suites with a view into the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series garages will provide an unprecedented experience in Richmond; similar to modern stadiums and arenas around the world. Media will be hosted in a new Media Center with broadcast booths, a conference room, and hospitality space. Due in part to our fantastic working relationship with staff and their openness to collaborative problem solving, the project met its critical milestone deadlines and is about to host its ribbon cutting for the grand opening on September 19th, 2018.

LONGWOOD UNIVERSITY, UPCHURCH UNIVERSITY CENTER HG Design Studio provided landscape architecture for a new two-level 120,000 square foot student union. The new building is centrally-located on the Longwood University campus and includes essential connections to some of the most important campus open spaces: Wheeler Mall, Brock Commons, and Lankford Mall. The scope of the project included pedestrian circulation, ample green space for student recreation, dedicated space for clubs and organizations, special event area for fraternity and sorority events, a cabaret venue for entertainment events, student government association meeting spaces, student lounges, administrative offices for the department of student union and activities, large meeting spaces, a centralized message center and a food service area.

SCIENCE MUSEUM OF VIRGINIA MASTER PLAN UPDATES & PARKING DECK | RICHMOND, VA The Science Museum of Virginia is embarking on the exciting creation of a park in front of its iconic building. Stretching from Terminal Place to the west to DMV Drive to the east, the park will take over two parking lots to create a green, welcoming place in this dense and heavily-built part of the City. In front of the Children’s Museum of Richmond and a new parking structure next to the Science Museum, a series of pathways cut through rolling topography planted with native trees, groundcovers, and drought-tolerant lawn. An art plaza will accommodate a large sculpture, being commissioned separately by the Museum. The entry driveways in front of the Museum have been narrowed and surface parking removed. An open lawn and a plaza for the Earth Kugel create an open vista to the historic façade. The rolling topography and pathways pick up again on the east edge of the site, where the Moon Kugel is also relocated. A collection of Virginia native evergreen trees bookends the site to the east and the west. Along the Broad Street edge, an allee of native trees creates both a walkway and a seating area, raised about 30” above the level of the sidewalk. Small plazas at each street intersection are marked with entry monuments and create welcoming points into the site. The project is being developed in coordination with the City’s redesign of the sidewalks along Broad Street.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, DAVENPORT FIELD The University of Virginia’s Davenport Field project was fast-paced from design through construction, following these design phases: programing, schematic design, design development, early sitework construction documents, final sitework construction documents, bid negotiations, and construction administration. HG worked closely with UVA Facilities Planning and Construction, our client; UVA Athletics, the end user; DLR and Grimm + Parker, the architects; 2RW, the MEP; and Martin Horn, the contractor, to develop designs and implement construction on a site that was occupied by the owner and sports teams throughout construction. Challenge 1: Occupied Site The Davenport Field project is part of a larger park and athletics complex which was occupied by both owners and users during construction. Our construction phasing was tailored to accommodate access for both users and contractors; to adjust work hours and access for events, camps, and competitions; and, to coordinate timing of outages and access with owner’s scheduling needs. • HG developed an early site package to relocate utilities in advance of construction and during off-season times for the adjacent Lannigan track and field stadium. The early utility relocation extended water service and power duct banks to the project site; the routes for these lines would have impeded larger construction access had they not been completed early. • Work was phased to maintain fire and delivery access through the site during construction, and schedules for access and delivery needs were coordinated during the weekly construction meetings. • Temporary paths and bridges were constructed to route athletes and coaches around the construction zones to the adjacent facilities in use. Alternative access to the fields adjacent to the Dorey competition field will be an important consideration. Additionally, staging construction to limit impacts to existing infrastructure is imperative. UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, DAVENPORT FIELD (CONTINUED) Challenge 2: Stormwater Management The existing stormwater best management practices (BMPs) at Davenport Field were not sufficient to account for the new impervious cover; therefore, innovative stormwater measures for the tight site were required. HG studied the larger regional watershed and determined that downstream channels were sufficient to handle large storm events. Small storm events and water quality improvements were achieved through the use of high-flow media filters “hidden” in the landscape islands, pervious pavement in the overflow parking lot, and an underground infiltration chamber. The high-flow media filters are small footprint rain gardens that drain very quickly during rain events and can be nestled into slightly oversized parking lot islands or other available green spaces.

Additional Project Highlights: Vehicular circulation, fire access, and pedestrian circulation shared a single, 15-foot wide asphalt road prior to the expansion project at Davenport Field. Through the limited use of site walls, HG addressed the site pinch-point to create a separated pedestrian and vehicular zones. A 20-foot road provides vehicular, fire truck and delivery access; pedestrian crossings are limited and demarcated by table-top cross-walks which visually and physically cue drivers to slow for pedestrians. An 8-foot sidewalk with landscaping brings pedestrians to the ticketing plaza. And for the first time, there are ADA and VIP parking spaces located at the ticketed entrance to the field.

CORPORATE CAMPUS HEADQUARTERS | GOOCHLAND COUNTY, VA HG Design Studio was contracted to perform Civil Engineering and Landscape Architecture for a series of projects for this private campus,, incorporating two new buildings, extensive outdoor amenities, green space, and a second parking deck. Emphasis was placed on collaborative outdoor green space, pedestrian connectivity and environmentally responsible campus features. A complex and sleek entry fountain and plaza design was vital to the clients desire to attract top talent, as well as views and connections to and from other buildings. The centrally located meadow and stormwater management combination provides most common vista from each building. A pedestrian bridge designed by HG spans stormwater rain garden filtration system. HG navigated topography with a series of steps and a ramp system designed by HG, as well as an intricate native plant plan to tie the campus into the surrounding natural area. Client project schedule required diligence and internal planning to devote proper resources and priority to design and construction, as well as knowledge based construction administration. Other Civil Engineer and Landscape Architecture projects include the following: The Commons Outdoor Terrace: This project required high quality design and extensive construction administration. Dave worked directly with the client and Leo A Daly, an architecture firm out of Nebraska, on this project. The Den Renovation: HG collaborated with HLW Architects out of New York City to incorporate a new entry access and building extension between campus Buildings 5 and 6. Both Civil and Landscape Architecture services were offered. HG ensured that a continuity of the campus design standards were incorporated into the renovation project. Thoughtful consideration of new bike and pedestrian circulation, planting design and utility reconfigurations were all part of the final design. Town Center Refresh: An office campus facility expansion, HG worked with Gensler and their Schematic Design to deliver this project’s Design Development and CD’s for civil/ landscape within one month’s turnaround. HG had to consider impact on existing utility ducts, grading and drainage, hardscape and landscape design. West Creek Village: Seeking a rare LEED-NC certification for a private owner, HG engaged in design and expansion of the site green space and amenities requiring integration with existing facilities, pedestrian connections, courtyard and garden, upper and lower patios, lighting, concrete ramp, retaining walls and metal handrails. HG partnered with architecture firm SMBW with substantial design completion in February 2017.

VIRGINIA TECH, DATA & DECISION SCIENCES BUILDING An inviting and distinctive exterior environment is envisioned for the Data & Decision Sciences Building. The building’s configuration creates several distinct spaces. The Commons Plaza on the south leads to the building’s front door and connects to the Student Commons within. It will support movement in and out of the building as well as creating a tree-shaded space for gathering. The new Multi-Modal Transit Facility to the south will be screened with plantings and a seat wall. On the north side of the building, another plaza connects to the second level of the Student Commons. An organic landscape of tree-planted berms and curving, accessible pathways screens this space while connecting to Prices Fork Road. To the east, a courtyard space created by the two wings of the building will be used both for passage as well as a quiet space for respite. The western edge of the project will have a temporary condition of steep slopes between the D&DS building and the parking lot which will remain until the construction of Pamplin Hall in the future. Hardscape materials will harmonize with the surrounding campus design, to include concrete pathways, Hokie Stone walls, and some special paving at key locations. The planting design approach relies on native and naturalized plants as well as drought tolerant species, all of which will thrive with no supplemental irrigation after initial establishment. Plant selections have been made based on their seasonal impact and visual interest for any given time of year.

VIRGINIA TECH, INFINITE LOOP AND GREEN LINKS DESIGN GUIDES HG is collaborating with Boston-based Sasaki Associates on the development of design guidelines for two interrelated landscape projects arising out of Sasaki’s recently completed master plan for Virginia Tech’s campus: the Infinite Loop and the Green Links. The Infinite Loop will create a continuous, accessible path around the campus; it is woven into a new system of north-south Green Links path connections. Collectively the Loop and the Links establish an armature for creating a circulation network that serves the needs of all campus users. The Loop contributes to fitness goals of the University by encouraging active transportation. It is designed as a promenade that connects existing and proposed campus districts. It will facilitate bike access to the various districts of the campus and will also provide an environment for testing new infrastructural technologies including autonomous vehicles. The Green Links make use of some existing pathways, augmented with new connections where needed. The Links and Loop together will bring a much greater level of accessibility to the very challenging topography of the campus and through the use of innovative stormwater approaches will move the campus toward its sustainability goals.

LONGWOOD UNIVERSITY, JOAN OF ARC STATUE GROUNDS A series of interventions transformed this corridor prior to the 2016 mock debates and was completed on a tight and unforgiving schedule. Those projects included a new pedestrian entryway to Brock Commons, Beale Pavilion which is a new multiuse garden structure at the intersection of Brock Commons and Wheeler Mall, a new portico/entry feature to Willett Hall, the venue for the nationally televised Vice Presidential debates, and all terminated by a newly commissioned sculpture (by Alexander Stoddart) of Joan of Arc, patroness of the University. The end of Brock Commons is punctuated by a new bronze sculpture of Joan of Arc placed on a limestone plinth and nestled in an exedra surrounded by trees and other plantings. HG worked hand in hand with the architect to create a setting that would complement the commissioned sculpture. The Joan of Arc Sculpture and surrounding plaza and landscape creates a terminus for Brock Commons, the central pedestrian corridor running through the center of the Longwood University Campus. HG developed plans and details for the plaza surrounding the sculpture and designed a landscape plan focused on creating a backdrop for the sculpture and this important pedestrian space and endpoint for Brock Commons.

WESTMINSTER-CANTERBURY RICHMOND EXPANSION | HENRICO COUNTY, VA At Westminster-Canterbury’s northside campus, HG Design Studio is working with SFCS Architects to assist the client with modernizing an older facility. Senior living has become a competitive market, and often driven by the younger generation, who values luxury and up-to-date facilities. In response, the creation of gardens, a Wellness Activity area above a new parking deck as well as the creation of a new Villa neighborhood is the objective to improve the campus. The roof of the parking deck will accommodate a variety of wellness components, which have all been determined through close coordination with WC staff and residents. Structured elements like pickleball courts, an exercise equipment fitness courtyard, and firepit and picnic shelter will be joined by gardens and open lawn areas for multipurpose uses. Land planning will integrate a collection of buildings from different eras into a sense of community and place. The new Villa neighborhood will be centered around a large Village Green, with pathways, gardens, and a dog park. Community garden beds will be located adjacent to the existing Cochrane Pond. Berms and dense plantings will screen the property from adjacent commercial development. A walking trail, which is among the most popular amenities with residents, will connect all parts of the large campus.

CEDARFIELD SENIOR LIVING | HENRICO COUNTY, VA HG Design Studio was inserted into this large and multi-phased expansion project to provide landscape architecture for the gardens and exterior spaces surrounding the new Wellness Building, four additional courtyard gardens dotted throughout the property, and perimeter planting for additions to the Independent Living building and Household facility. Cedarfield is situated on 90 wooded acres, and the presentation of its grounds is integral to its mission to enrich the quality of life of its residents. An essential part of our charge was to create landscapes that conform and correspond with the existing campus, and to work in collaboration with the facilities staff, including the horticulturalist on plant selections. Our landscape architects designed attractive, pedestrian-friendly garden spaces accessible to residents of all abilities. These included a Secret Garden courtyard, a Memory Care courtyard, a New Resident courtyard, and planting quadrangles adjacent to a loading dock and two building additions. Client and architectural input was integrated into the programming and schedule in order to attain consensus, desired budget, and design deliverables, including presentation of rendered landscape concepts. HG evaluated existing POD submittals for information relevant to the proposed design and coordinated plans with county officials to ensure compliance. Selection of plantings suitable for the area and the residents was part of our process, and HG solicited bids from contractors for preliminary estimates of construction budgets.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY WASHINGTON, AMPHITHEATER & ACCESSIBLE PATH HG Design Studio recently completed a renovation of an amphitheater that was originally opened in 1923 and has been used for various functions including theater productions and convocation ceremonies. This renovation made improvements to the stage area including: new stairs, repair of storage under stage, electrical upgrade, theatrical systems (lighting and sound), and the repair/replacement of the columns and balustrade. In addition, site improvements included: ADA improvements, landscaping, stormwater improvements, repairs to sidewalks and paving. Construction also included two new support buildings (each approximately 250 SF). In its prior condition, the amphitheater was unsafe to be used for any type of assembly function. Located in a wooded area, the amphitheater presented a public safety challenge for students to congregate and a security hazard for those pedestrians travelling near or through the area. By renovating the amphitheater, the University has restored the venue for educational functions as well as other assembly functions. In 2019, the Amphitheater Rehabilitation was awarded the E. Boyd Graves Preservation Award of Excellence by Historic Fredericksburg Foundation. This award serves to recognize notable preservation achievements made by groups of individuals that contribute to the protection, understanding, appreciation, and revitalization of the Fredericksburg region’s history and historic resources.

BON SECOURS ST. FRANCIS MEDICAL CENTER | CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA St. Francis Medical Center is a 45-acre medical campus that comprises a 130-bed acute care hospital, an attached six-story medical office building and two freestanding medical office buildings. In lieu of a sea of asphalt as the first thing greeting hospital guests, the team at HG created a site plan that features a tree-lined boulevard with pedestrian-scale lighting, and a series of smaller parking lots on either side, making the walk from the car the first in a series of soothing, calming measures designed to welcome guests. At the entry, a large central fountain and vine-covered pergolas soften the face of the hospital building. At the back of the hospital a sunken chapel garden is one of the signature features of the hospital. Nestled between the retaining wall for the parking lot 16 feet above, and the hospital building, this long, narrow, potentially-challenging space presented HG with an opportunity to create something spectacular. Long pergolas line either side of the garden, and a cast stone gazebo at one end not only creates a lovely focal point, but completes the garden which has become a popular site for weddings. We designed a reflecting pool and granite runnel water feature to add the soothing sights and sounds of running water, and our plant palette of mixed evergreens, deciduous shrubs and herbaceous perennials provides year-round interest. Both the front entry and the chapel garden contributed to the Medical Center being named America’s Most Beautiful Hospital by Soliant Health in 2011. In making this distinction, organizers cited the landscaping that “welcomes patients and visitors to relax and regenerate.”

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY, MADISON HALL RENOVATION HG Design Studio is currently working on the renovation of Madison Hall, a multi-use office and event space on the campus nestled in the foothills between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Mountains. The challenging topography of the site led the design team to propose terraced seat walls made of local bluestone, and elegant steps down to a formal event lawn on a lower level. We created our planting design with the university calendar in mind, planning for heightened color and interest around the time of key campus events such as graduation and the late summer arrival of new students.

INNSBROOK OFFICE PARK Competition for corporate talent has increased, so when Highwoods Properties, purveyors of much of Innsbrook Office Park, decided to refresh and refurbish dated spaces, they contacted HG Design Studio to create sophisticated outdoor amenities that appeal and attract discriminating tenants. First in order was the aged signage at the corner of Cox Road and West Broad Street. HG sited a new sign concept and provided grading to elevate the sign in the median. By providing a 3D study of the intersection for future sign accent walls, the client was able to better express their entry vision. After completing base concept and planting plan, we coordinated with sign installer, irrigation, lighting and planting contractors to deliver the product. Phase two of the restoration consisted of creating an outdoor terrace plan for a 3,000 square foot rear deck at one of the office buildings in the park. (Approx. $350,000) Schematics and construction documents were prepared by HG, and we coordinated a structural review. Updated planting and enhanced pedestrian lighting were implemented, and were connected to existing trail system. The client then asked us to reconfigure the front entry drop off and add a plaza to complement the lobby renovation. Front entry area to be completed in Fall 2017. Highwoods II and the Saxon Building were part of the next phase of design updates. HG was tasked with renovating the entry and providing a parking study. A schematic study to renovate the main entry exterior into an urban plaza was an additional project for the client. As a result of working on time and budget with Highwoods, HG was referred to longtime tenant Markel, where we were commissioned to renovated the back amphitheater terrace to a more useable space that included an IPE deck and cable handrail. HG’s design provided more useable square footage to the rear terrace of the building by adding a floating deck over an existing sloped hillside. Updated planting and connections to the existing lakeside walk were instituted.

HG designed an entrance that combines sustainability, stormwater as an amenity, and learning opportunities for the study program. Early in the concept phase, HG suggested bio-retention features as an attraction for users to encounter upon entering the research facility. A bridge over a bio-retention area connects parking, sidewalk and front doors, and serves as a ‘living lab’ for science students to be educated on natural material as water filtration. HG designed a tiered outdoor classroom down to the river, and implemented several naturalized micro stormwater management amenities and native planting around the building in place of typical landscaping.

DISCIPLINES Master Planning Landscape Architecture Stormwater Concepts

Research for bridge material includes locally harvested black locust lumber, and interpretive signage will be implemented to highlight the function of the bio-retention areas, which not only treat stormwater from the building roofs, but provide habitat and naturalized frontage for the facility. The project is pursuing LEED Silver certification.

SHELTERING ARMS REHABILITATION INSTITUTE | GOOCHLAND COUNTY, VA The new SARI hospital was master planned to provide space for future inpatient and outpatient buildings and services. This project includes 114 inpatient beds, a central rehabilitation gym, a laboratory, a pharmacy, a kitchen and cafeteria, administrative offices, surface parking, site and utility development, and more. The site is close to major roads and interstates and was developed to support not only the initial building but also future expansion. The owner wishes this project to become a destination site for the specialized services being offered. As such, access to the campus and offered services was developed with both the patients and the care-givers in mind such that outside experts and researchers will be drawn to the facility. The landscape design approach utilizes native and adapted native plants as well as drought tolerant species. An orchestrated sequence of flowering ornamental trees leads the traveler to the auto-court and main building entrance. the parking lot islands are planted with shade trees, low shrubs and groundcover. At the main entrance to the building, there is colored concrete paving with a dominant scoring pattern to distinguish this area from all the other standard collector walk concrete. Remaining walkways are poured in place, gray concrete. Ornamental LED light bollards are located at the patient arrival area. Low voltage LED landscape lighting is located near the entrance to the building. Attractive metal benches with backs and metal trash cans are located near the front door.

COSTAR HEADQUARTERS (FORMERLY WESTROCK) As one of only three buildings in the United States to receive the highest Green Globes rating of four globes from the Green Building Initiative, the MeadWestVaco headquarters building at Foundry Park reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability. The project includes sustainable landscape strategies such as intensive and extensive vegetative roofs, drip irrigation, native plants, and light colored paving. The design team was faced with the challenge of creating an entrance plaza on top of the underground parking structure. The solution was to reduce the amount of hardscape by introducing intensive and semi intensive vegetative roof gardens. These roof gardens continue onto the roof terrace where an extensive vegetative roof is the foreground for panoramic views of the James River. The building sits on a site that slopes more than thirty feet towards the river. The landscape architects worked closely with the architect to create parallel stairs inside and outside the building that lead from the lobby level to the cafeteria and dining terrace and then down to the fitness center at street level. The dining terrace is terraced into the hillside with stone walls that are partially constructed of stone that was salvaged from the site. The curved edges are in contrast to the straight lines of the building and are a reminder of the Kanawha canal which used to cross a portion of the site. The hillside is planted with a mix of native plants including Switchgrass, River Birch, Sycamores, Serviceberry and Dogwood.

LEWIS GINTER BOTANICAL GARDEN, ROSE GARDEN MASTER PLAN | HENRICO COUNTY, VA For the rose garden area at the botanical garden, our client wanted a place not just to showcase dozens of varieties of roses, but a pleasant, quiet path with plenty of restful seating where visitors to the garden can rest and enjoy the beauty of the gardens and the views of the lake beyond. HG Design Studio was retained by Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the Rose Garden, a daily attraction for visitors, and is also the perfect location for social gatherings, weddings, and musical events. The Botanical Garden took this opportunity to fine tune this major garden feature and greatly improve and expand the rose garden plantings as well. Design challenges included redesign of the paving material to improve safety and maintainability while providing adequate space for events. Another challenge was in bringing purpose and a finished look to the turf hillside. HG designed a simple but elegant solution in the form of a terraced lawn which links the Central Garden and Conservatory to the Rose Garden and patio, with views of the lake beyond. We designed the drainage and grading to provide the well-drained soils preferred by roses, and to encourage the lawn to drain quickly after storm events.

RIDGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL | HENRICO COUNTY, VA HG Design Studio provided landscape architecture and civil engineering services for Henrico County Public Schools at their Ridge Elementary and Tuckahoe Middle Schools. The first phase of the project consisted of master planning improvements to these adjacent, historic schools which solve bus, parent and teacher parking and circulation challenges. The second phase of the project was the design of improvements to the Ridge Elementary School parking lot. The funding for construction of the parking lot expansion at Ridge Elementary School came from meals tax money and is limited to $495,000; the project had to be phased to exactly meet the budget, be completed in 2016, and could only be used at Ridge Elementary School. HG led design charrettes with each school’s stakeholder committee of administration, safety, and parent representatives to determine the critical issues and objectives. A challenge of the master plan was finding appropriate solutions for these tight sites that respect the schools’ desires to operate without shared facilities. HG helped facilitate an appropriate solution by hosting a third, joint committee charrette with discussions centered around balancing separation, solutions to critical problems, and saving large trees on both sites.

WASHINGTON & LEE HIGH SCHOOL | MONTROSS, VA HG Design Studio is providing site design to create a park like context for these new high school facilities, while providing support for various functions and events. The new high school building is sited at the front of the property, maximizing its presence along Kings Highway. Primary parking is provided in front of the school, with additional spaces located to the east. School bus pickup and dropoff is located on the western side of the school with its own entry. This area will also serve as parking for events outside of school hours. The football stadium and track and field facility is located directly behind the school on the centerline of the back entrance. A series of terraces leads down to the stadium from the school, connecting the two facilities and providing a space that can serve a variety of uses. The stadium is flanked on either side by athletic fields suitable for a variety of uses. Toward the back of the property the proposed park will include baseball and softball fields. Surrounding these facilities, the site is characterized by expanses of turf punctuated by trees. Planting beds highlight different areas around the campus or are part of the rain gardens employed for stormwater management. Rain gardens provide an opportunity to direct surface runoff back into the ground before it leaves the site. Multiple raingardens can be seen around the site to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus loadings. Stormwater detention ponds are planned for multiple locations. Detention ponds provide additional water quality management as well as detention of development runoff flow to match the pre-development conditions.

MANTLE, VIRGINIA INDIAN TRIBUTE | RICHMOND, VA HG Design Studio provided civil engineering and landscape architecture for the design of a permanent monument on Capitol Square as a tribute to the Commonwealth’s Indian tribes. We created construction documents to bring to life the vision of Mohawk artist, Alan Michelson. Acting primarily as the civil engineer for this one-of-a kind project, aesthetic coordination was supremely important. HG collaborated with the artist and design team to create a memorable monument space for visitors to our distinguished Virginia State Capital. Sustainable native Virginia plantings incorporated into the site augmented bio-retention and complement the notable spiral wall design. Siting of the monument required working with existing exteriors and seamless integration into the Capital’s pedestrian walkways and green space.

VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY, 12TH STREET PEDESTRIAN PLAZA For this project, HG Design Studio created a site plan for a pedestrian plaza in place of an existing street. One challenge for the project was that the plaza had to be designed to function whether or not the City of Richmond agreed to close the street and turn it over to the university. Additionally, a portion of the site is over an existing parking deck, so we have worked in close coordination with the structural engineer to develop a paving system that would satisfy the university’s design standard while working in the site constraints. When BCOM requested a pedestrian phasing plan during construction to allow for movement of pedestrians through a very complicated work zone, HG sat down with the owner and came up with a list of entry points and known pedestrian patterns and to create a phasing plan for the contractor to execute. We considered school schedules, construction phasing and delivery date and created a phasing plan to accommodate this request. Design elements of HG’s site plan included pedestrian areas, vehicular paving, vehicular control elements such as specialty paving and bollards, crosswalks, walls, ramps, stairs, site lighting, and site furniture and amenities. In addition, we created hardscape design and details, planting plans, lighting plans, grading plans, specifications and periodic cost estimates.

BON SECOURS CENTER FOR HEALTHY LIVING | RICHMOND, VA This urban renewal project creates a welcoming presence in one of Richmond’s most at-risk areas. Renovated in conjunction with longtime client, Bon Secours, who has operated a community hospital in the East End of Richmond for decades, the project demonstrates the commitment to investing in this neighborhood near some of the city’s most vulnerable populations. HG Design Studio was tasked with transforming a decayed, abandoned and blighted site into a pedestrian friendly outdoor park, with benches (which are almost always full) and a reuse of the gas station canopy to provide shade to benches and tables below. This adaptive reuse project converted a dilapidated gas station, Parsley’s, into a place where members of the community can meet, chat, and enjoy a cup of coffee. The center also gives employees of the Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital – located just across the street – a place to take a break and engage with members of the community. Previously, there was nowhere to wander outside the hospital walls. A new 1,800 square foot addition will be home to the Front Porch Café, a coffee shop operated by Church Hill Activities and Tutoring (CHAT) to provide job training and build life skills for young adults in the area, many of whom lack older adult role models. HG Design Studio is honored to be part of the design and construction team that benefits the community and is spurring more economic development in the area.

Capitol Square serves a significant dual role as the historic seat of state government as well as being an urban oasis in downtown Richmond. The project team had to balance several competing interests in the master plan from historic preservationists, to sustainability activists, to state legislators. We established guidelines for daily, weekly and ongoing maintenance; future landscape and hardscape installations; and addressing safety concerns and citizen complaints. We created recommendations for access, circulation and parking; hardscape materials; site elements; vegetation and topography, all within the context of preserving the prominent features of this important and historic site. We also gave consideration to future maintenance with a focus on less labor-intensive practices.

HG Design Studio has had the honor to work on a number of projects at St. Joseph’s Villa over the years as the institution continues to renovate and improve. The most recent is a parking lot expansion and the Dooley School, which was a site specific design that addressed the main entry to the school at the drop off area. HG designed the ADA and main pedestrian entry circulation, along with new storm drain system at the school’s front door, and foundation plantings were refreshed. In addition, our engineers designed a new fire utility connection.

Another recent project at the Villa began with a study to assist the client with phasing in future projects planned over time as fundraising efforts continue. The existing landscaping along the Villa’s Brook Road and Parham Road frontages had aged and was in need of an update. The Villa desired a landscape treatment along these major perimeter roads that would create a unified and aesthetically pleasing image for the institution. Elements which help identify the institution, whether through signage or other means, were also planned. HG also worked with stakeholders to identify a general direction for the project as well as ballpark costing and assistance developing a phasing plan.

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, CANNON CHAPEL GARDEN GARDEN HG Design Studio completed designs for the University of Richmond to master plan the east side of Cannon Chapel. The space formerly served as an exterior access route from the alter end to the main entrance of the chapel. It also was and is home to “Peggy’s Garden,” a small paved area with stone benches placed in memory of Peggy Meadows, a dedicated and loved employee of the University. A columbarium space, a worship garden and a formal gathering area for weddings, funerals and other special events were all identified as uses that were needed within close proximity to the Chapel. The space is enclosed by a curved 8 foot high brick wall with limestone caps carefully designed to match the Chapel’s architectural detail. The terraced wall provides the structure for each 8”x 8”x 12” niche and allows for planting above the niche cabinets. Approximately 3000 niches are provided throughout the garden. Both fixed bench seating around the fountain and scatter garden, and movable chairs randomly placed among the columbarium provide flexible seating for small groups. The open lawn area allows space for a more formal seating arrangement, which can be staged at the chapel door or at any perimeter location. The fountain and statuary provide a unique and special space for gatherings and is still “Peggy’s Garden” identified with a bronze and granite plaque memorializing those whose cremated remains have been interred within the scatter garden.
