She has managed significant contracts for both public and private sector clients, using a collaborative project approach and management style. In 2015, HG Design Studio expanded services to include civil enginenerring, with Charlene at the helm. Almost immediately, HG was awarded the coveted term contract with the University of Virginia in the same year. Our responsiveness, reasonable fees, and quality deliverables have quickly made us a highly valued consultant to the institutional community. For ciients who care about the appeal of their site, Charlene and Dave have developed an integrated approach to site design that has resonated with both private sector and public sector stakeholders. Charlene spearheaded projects at Westhampton Theater, Ridge Elementary School, Capital One in Goochland, Caritas Center Expansion, and the Indian Memorial at Capitol Square, to name a few.
University of Richmond, Queally Center for Admissions HG was involved with the coordination of siting the UR Admissions Center building, which proved to be a challenging exercise. This now beautiful corner lot was previously a dump site, sitting against a rocky hillside slope. HG designed the Front Entry Approach and Entry Plaza, lined with benches and ornamental trees, which guides you from UR Drive towards the main entry tower paved with bluestone. We also designed the West Courtyard, with the goal in mind that it will serve as an outdoor “room. Significant design elements in this courtyard include the bluestone paved walkways, brick and low fountain seat walls, as well as elevated hornbeam hedges that are situated behind the fountain to provide a beautiful green backdrop.

MeadWestVaco Headquarters (now West Rock) As one of only three buildings in the United States to receive the highest Green Globes rating of four globes from the Green Building Initiative, the MeadWestVaco headquarters building at Foundry Park reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability. The project includes sustainable landscape strategies such as intensive and extensive vegetative roofs, drip irrigation, native plants, and light colored paving. The design team was faced with the challenge of creating an entrance plaza on top of the underground parking structure. The solution was to reduce the amount of hardscape by introducing intensive and semi intensive vegetative roof gardens. These roof gardens continue onto the roof terrace where an extensive vegetative roof is the foreground for panoramic views of the James River. The building sits on a site that slopes more than thirty feet towards the river. The landscape architects worked closely with the architect to create parallel stairs inside and outside the building that lead from the lobby level to the cafeteria and dining terrace and then down to the fitness center at street level. The dining terrace is terraced into the hillside with stone walls that are partially constructed of stone that was salvaged from the site. The curved edges are in contrast to the straight lines of the building and are a reminder of the Kanawha canal which used to cross a portion of the site. The hillside is planted with a mix of native plants including Switchgrass, River Birch, Sycamores, Serviceberry and Dogwood.

James Madison University, Chandler Courtyard Renovation Sustainability and stormwater management were the driving forces behind the Chandler Courtyard project. A busy 40-year-old crumbling concrete courtyard surrounded by three dormitories and an academic building was redesigned to reduce impervious area and add green space. The design ties together the adjacent buildings with a series of open green spaces and intimate seating configurations. The pre-development impervious surface area of the courtyard was decreased by a quarter of an acre and an overall storm-water management strategy was incorporated. Stormwater runoff headed for the lake was reduced in quantity and improved in quality through the use of bio-retention areas. The bio-filtration planters manage stormwater on-site and provide lush gardens in the middle of the courtyard. The courtyard was also designed to accommodate the circulation needs of the student dorm population. Beach volleyball and an outdoor dining terrace with a view of the lake are popular features within the space.
Corporate Campus Headquarters HG worked with the client to renovate the exteriors of two buildings and an adjacent parking deck. Our contributions to the design included the entry plaza with complex fountain design; pedestrian crosswalks connecting the buildings with the parking deck; a suspended bridge entry to one building; and an attractive, sustainable, native plant plan to tie the campus into the surrounding natural area. The design of this office building was recently awarded four Green Globes by the Green Building Initiative, a designation reserved for select building designs which serve as national or world leaders in energy and environmental performance and projects which introduce design practices that can be adopted and implemented by others.

HG’s concepts for the garden space featured areas for private reflection as well as an area for gatherings of larger family groups. The landscape walls enclose visitors like an embrace, shielding them from public areas like the adjacent parking lot, in addition to providing a feeling of privacy for families supporting loved ones in the nearby hospital.
Collegiate School Master Plan | Richmond, VA In the early 1990’s, Collegiate School retained HG to study the previous master plan and to develop new ideas that accelerated their goals for improved, high-quality educational facilities. The improvement of Upper, Middle, and Lower School classrooms, the addition of a Performing Arts Center, and the improvement of sports facilities were among their major goals. Major objectives for the campus included: strengthening the main entrance and identifying the center of campus in a way that respects and enhances the surrounding residential community; organizing and improving the safety of student/vehicular circulation; and beautifying and creating outdoor spaces for a multitude of uses from active play to quiet study. After the successful completion of Upper School and Middle School improvements, the Lower School campus renovation became a high priority. Like the outdated and inefficient classroom buildings, the exterior play spaces and vehicular/pedestrian circulation patterns were conflicting and unsafe by modern standards. Completed in 2001, the improved Lower School Campus includes ample parking, age-appropriate equipment, and a combination of new architecture and site walls to provide secure containment for both active play areas and passive courtyard spaces.

Longwood University, New Residence Halls Charged with the integration of two new residential buildings into a topographically challenging site, HG created a design that uses brick-clad retaining walls, a gentle grassy hillside, and bosques of ornamental flowering trees around a Central Lawn that serves as both an elegant face of the university and a space for active and passive student recreation. The design team worked closely with both the Longwood Real Estate Foundation and Longwood University staff to reconfigure an earlier site design to coordinate more closely with the overall campus master plan currently under development. HG was able to maintain an existing pedestrian corridor through the site while providing accessible routes for all students across significant changes in grade.

HG was tasked with assisting the architect with the design of the new outdoor dining terrace, and providing civil and landscape design for the perimeter of the terrace and surrounding land form affected by the expansion. We created bid documents showing how the addition would drain and how an existing storm sewer line and sanitary sewer line could be accommodated. HG served as construction manager, providing hands-on site supervision and working out a temporary pedestrian traffic pattern to keep the building accessible during construction. We were asked to bring smaller, local contractors to the table and bid out all the hardscape, grading, drainage, landscape and irrigation. When a communication pole and wire were encountered during construction, we were able to orchestrate working around the conflict while maintaining the integrity of the design since we were already on the site. In addition, we helped to keep costs down by working with trusted contractors, scrutinizing invoices, and making sure contracts were met to the complete satisfaction of our client. With two weeks of work to remain, the word came out that our client wanted the project done in half that time. Due to our strong relationship with the subcontractors and our ability to react quickly to the job site, we were able to stay on top of everything and even get our partners to work through the weekend. Our client was very appreciative of our efforts as the project was completed on their compressed time frame and was open for business. We were lauded for our ability to remain flexible as the scope of work changed, and to complete complex deliverables despite an aggressive deadline. As a result, the client has trust and a level of loyalty with the knowledge that with our supervision, the project will be completed beyond the satisfaction of all parties concerned.
Virginia Military Institute, Cormack Hall and Memorial Garden HG developed a hardscape improvement plan, landscape planting plan, lighting and irrigation plans for the grounds renovation surrounding Cormack Hall. We also reconfigured the garden to the northeast of the building to include a formal memorial archway, which we designed out of stone to complement the historic campus. We enhanced and refreshed the existing plants with formal, symmetrical plantings to complete the landscape which is watered with harvested water collected in two underground cisterns hidden under the formal lawn. HG created a site plan that complemented the existing topography and surrounding vegetation. We designed patio spaces, athletic components including the long jump and triple jump facilities, site amenities, retaining walls, planting and parking all with an eye to preserving the timeless gothic features that are characteristic of this institution. A major focus of our work was protecting the large existing white oak tree very close to the new spectator grandstand and plaza area. St. Francis Medical Center | Bon Secours Health System St. Francis Medical Center is a 45-acre medical campus that comprises a 130-bed acute care hospital, an attached six-story medical office building and two freestanding medical office buildings. In lieu of a sea of asphalt as the first thing greeting hospital guests, the team at HG created a site plan that features a tree-lined boulevard with pedestrian-scale lighting, and a series of smaller parking lots on either side, making the walk from the car the first in a series of soothing, calming measures designed to welcome guests. At the entry, a large central fountain and vine-covered pergolas soften the face of the hospital building. At the back of the hospital a sunken chapel garden is one of the signature features of the hospital. Nestled between the retaining wall for the parking lot 16 feet above, and the hospital building, this long, narrow, potentially-challenging space presented HG with an opportunity to create something spectacular. Long pergolas line either side of the garden, and a cast stone gazebo at one end not only creates a lovely focal point, but completes the garden which has become a popular site for weddings. We designed a reflecting pool and granite runnel water feature to add the soothing sights and sounds of running water, and our plant palette of mixed evergreens, deciduous shrubs and herbaceous perennials provides year-round interest. Both the front entry and the chapel garden contributed to the Medical Center being named America’s Most Beautiful Hospital by Soliant Health in 2011. In making this distinction, organizers cited the landscaping that “welcomes patients and visitors to relax and regenerate.

The VCU School of Nursing garden was designed to provide a peaceful place for nursing students as well as a place to honor the history of nursing education on the MCV campus. Part of the student experience involves work with real patients and their illnesses and the garden is an inviting place for them to relax, study and experience nature. The school’s more-than-100-year history is commemorated by the incorporation of cornerstones from now demolished buildings that housed the school. Our plan created a green space for the students with lush landscaping, two water features, quiet seating areas, flexible seating for dining or outdoor meetings, and a large lawn to accommodate a tent for special occasions. We also incorporated design solutions to correct a drainage problem adjacent to the site and address unforeseen site conditions.

John Randolph Medical Center | HCA HG was tasked to help bolster the presence of the Hospital by improving visual access into the site and site circulation, creating opportunities to improve the grounds through gardens, walking paths, and terraces and also to develop a campus identity. HG provided a site analysis with regards to the desires of the client and created a list of opportunities for the campus. The master plan addressed: • Street Access - Create a 'greener' appearance throughout their street edges by burying utility lines, adding street trees, upgrading plantings, improving off-site pedestrian connections, and providing gateways into the site. • Building Access - Create strong visual clues to the entrances of the building, reconfigure vehicular circulation to reduce conflicts between ambulances/facilities/hospital patrons, and upgrade site design for critical building entrances. • Green Space - Create a fitness/walking trail around the campus to capture views of the Appomattox River, create Cafeteria terrace for employees/patrons, and upgrade central garden into a place to decompress and relax in nature. • Campus Identity - Create a campus standard in lighting, seating, and vehicular control. By having a consistent theme across the campus, the repeated patterns help establish a campus core.

University of Richmond | Columbarium Garden HG completed designs for the University of Richmond to master plan the east side of Cannon Chapel. The space formerly served as an exterior access route from the alter end to the main entrance of the chapel. It also was and is home to “Peggy’s Garden,” a small paved area with stone benches placed in memory of Peggy Meadows, a dedicated and loved employee of the University. A columbarium space, a worship garden and a formal gathering area for weddings, funerals and other special events were all identified as uses that were needed within close proximity to the Chapel. The space is enclosed by a curved 8 foot high brick wall with limestone caps carefully designed to match the Chapel’s architectural detail. The terraced wall provides the structure for each 8”x 8”x 12” niche and allows for planting above the niche cabinets. Approximately 3000 niches are provided throughout the garden. Both fixed bench seating around the fountain and scatter garden, and movable chairs randomly placed among the columbaria provide fl exible seating for small groups. The open lawn area allows space for a more formal seating arrangement, which can be staged at the chapel door or at any perimeter location. The fountain and statuary provide a unique and special space for gatherings and is still “Peggy’s Garden” identified with a bronze and granite plaque memorializing those whose cremated remains have been interred within the scatter garden.
