HG intentionally maintains a small firm culture, even though we routinely compete on projects with much larger firms. We have found that clients prefer to work with the same senior staff that appeared on the submittal and attend the interview. We are keen on customer service and invite you to call the owners/partners whenever necessary. This way, we maintain relationships…over 80% of our clientele is repeat business. We have active projects in Virginia from Blacksburg to Virginia Beach, and D.C to South Boston.
DAVE GERSTENMAIER, PLA Founding Partner and Director of Design For over 35 years, Dave has accumulated an extensive and award-winning portfolio in landscape architectural design and land planning in Virginia. TUCKAHOE PARK MASTER PLAN | HENRICO COUNTY, VA HG Design Studio was asked by the county to perform a study of the 2008 Master Plan for Tuckahoe Park. We worked with CHA, who has a term contract with Henrico County. The 2008 Master Plan provided direction for the future of the recently acquired baseball focused park addressing circulation, parking, new field layouts and improvements, and passive recreation opportunities. Focusing on current stakeholder goals and mission, the audit evaluated constructability of the proposed plan, construction phasing to address use during construction and the possibility of extended periods between phases, and opportunities to preserve some of the character of the existing park. Review and analysis of the 2008 Master Plan, stakeholder meetings, site visits, consideration of topography, utilities, wetlands, and stormwater, exploration of precedents, and multiple design studies informed the recommendations provides content. The final Master Plan Audit presents a revised layout, phasing plan, schematic utility, grading, and stormwater plans, cost opinions by phase, and design recommendations for baseball/softball facilities, park structures, playgrounds, trails, lighting, and landscape planting.

TUCKAHOE PARK MASTER PLAN | HENRICO COUNTY, VA Discussions with Tuckahoe Little League, the primary user of the park, and Henrico County Parks personnel, including maintenance, programming/scheduling, and sports tourism, provided a program for the park’s design. In particular, our interviews and data highlighted the need to minimize disruptions to the park’s facilities to the greatest degree possible during construction. Addressing this need required changes to the mass grading approach necessitated by the tight, efficient layout of the 2008 Master Plan. Together with CHA, HG Design Studio evolved a design for the park through multiple iterations looking at grading, utilities, stormwater, timing of field closures vs. field construction, sequencing for parking and circulation, and layout of trails and other amenities. Follow-up discussions with Henrico County Parks during the design process further informed the designs’ progression. The final proposed layout and phasing plan provides small, distinct construction phases that can be executed with a minimal amount of disruption to park programming. The park layout functions well at the completion of each individual phase, allowing for the possibility of funding delays between phases. The Master Plan Audit includes Cost Opinions for each individual construction phase to aid in planning the scope for the project over time. The Master Plan Audit also presented an alternative to the final construction phase, allowing for preservation of some of the park’s current topography, structures, and field layout. HG is currently working with Henrico County on the implementation of our updated master plan.

21ST STREET PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE PARK | RICHMOND, VA This park was an environmentally denuded site adjacent to the only southern access point to Belle Isle – one of the City of Richmond’s most popular and well-frequented parks, boasting an average of 15,000 visitors per month. HG Design Studio was brought on board to assist with construction documentation, construction administration, and stormwater permitting. The unique challenge of this site was that a steep slope combined with frequent visitors had caused this park entrance to become denuded, eroded and somewhat treacherous. We re-graded the site from a 15% slope to an average 4.5% slope, we defined a clear walkway to funnel visitors through the site, we incorporated a rain garden to treat stormwater, and we added topsoil and native plants to improve the health and look of the site. Since installation, the rain garden and site have functioned beautifully through the summer storms.

DOUGLAS FREEMAN HIGH SCHOOL STADIUM ENTRANCE | HENRICO COUNTY, VA HG was engaged to develop a new entrance sequence to the athletic stadium at Douglas Freeman High School that would address the need of a new ticket booth that is ADA compliant and create a sense of arrival. We developed multiple scenarios that included items such as brick retaining walls and stairs, a plaza with the Douglas Freeman logo, ornamental lighting, new fencing, landscape that would improve access and flow to the new ticket booth and ultimately into the stadium. After a concept was chosen, HG developed a full set of POD plans for the landscape, hardscape and drainage for the new sidewalk and plaza area surrounding the ticket booth (design by CHA).

CAPITOL SQUARE MASTER PLAN | RICHMOND, VA HG Design Studio revised and updated the Master Plan for the Capitol Grounds which feature the Capitol building, a National Historic Landmark designed by Thomas Jefferson. Capitol Square serves a significant dual role as the historic seat of state government as well as being an urban oasis in downtown Richmond. The project team had to balance several competing interests in the master plan from historic preservationists, to sustainability activists, to state legislators. We established guidelines for daily, weekly and ongoing maintenance; future landscape and hardscape installations; and addressing safety concerns and citizen complaints. We created recommendations for access, circulation and parking; hardscape materials; site elements; vegetation and topography, all within the context of preserving the prominent features of this important and historic site. We also gave consideration to future maintenance with a focus on less labor-intensive practices. MANTLE, VIRGINIA INDIAN TRIBUTE | RICHMOND, VA HG Design Studio provided civil engineering and landscape architecture for the design of a permanent monument on Capitol Square as a tribute to the Commonwealth’s Indian tribes. We created construction documents to bring to life the vision of Mohawk artist, Alan Michelson. Acting primarily as the civil engineer for this one-of-a kind project, aesthetic coordination was supremely important. HG collaborated with the artist and design team to create a memorable monument space for visitors to our distinguished Virginia State Capital. Sustainable native Virginia plantings incorporated into the site augmented bio-retention and complement the notable spiral wall design. Siting of the monument required working with existing exteriors and seamless integration into the Capital’s pedestrian walkways and green space.

WASHINGTON & LEE HIGH SCHOOL | MONTROSS, VA HG Design Studio is providing site design to create a park like context for these new high school facilities, while providing support for various functions and events. The new high school building is sited at the front of the property, maximizing its presence along Kings Highway. Primary parking is provided in front of the school, with additional spaces located to the east. School bus pickup and dropoff is located on the western side of the school with its own entry. This area will also serve as parking for events outside of school hours. The football stadium and track and field facility is located directly behind the school on the centerline of the back entrance. A series of terraces leads down to the stadium from the school, connecting the two facilities and providing a space that can serve a variety of uses. The stadium is flanked on either side by athletic fields suitable for a variety of uses. Toward the back of the property the proposed park will include baseball and softball fields. Surrounding these facilities, the site is characterized by expanses of turf punctuated by trees. Planting beds highlight different areas around the campus or are part of the rain gardens employed for stormwater management. Rain gardens provide an opportunity to direct surface runoff back into the ground before it leaves the site. Multiple raingardens can be seen around the site to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus loadings. Stormwater detention ponds are planned for multiple locations. Detention ponds provide additional water quality management as well as detention of development runoff flow to match the pre-development conditions.

MIDLOTHIAN LIBRARY | CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA During the programming and schematic phase for the Midlothian Library, HG prepared several concepts for the county to consider that promotes learning and curiosity. Because HG’s staff does not always focus exclusively on utilities during schematic design, we were able to promote ideas like an outdoor classroom, and a choice of several inexpensive outdoor interactive stations for children of different ages to engage, while keeping county reviews, setbacks and approvals in mind. These concepts are provided to attract more people to the library and open the community to a wider demographic.
PERKINSON CENTER FOR THE ARTS AND EDUCATION | CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA Chesterfield County has expanded their library building to add a new 500 seat community theater. The project includes an orchestra level, a pit and tech level which totals 20,000 square feet. The seating is sloped to the stage to allow theater style viewing to the performance stage. HG Design Studio provided the land planning, site design and full blown landscape plan for the Arts Center. The client preference was to extend and enhance the textural aesthetic of the adjacent Chester Library, which was also designed by HG. An illustration was prepared, with consideration of the overall site consistency and future parking requirements.

LEWIS GINTER BOTANICAL GARDEN, PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE | RICHMOND, VA Designed as a “ribbon of light,” this pedestrian bridge seems to float just over the southern end of the lake and connects the Rose Garden with the Children’s Garden, two immensely-popular areas of the park. Prior to HG Design Studio’s involvement, visitors would cross over a series of angled wooden bridges that narrowed in certain places, creating a bottleneck on busy days, and making them feel like they couldn’t linger over the view if someone was behind them. HG redesigned the bridge to be much wider, with a more direct route to the popular Rose Garden area. We designed the bridge of stone columns with mesh sides and stainless steel rods to create a path that is durable and safe but looks light and open. This allows visitors to see through it to interact with the water and water plants in the area, and to enjoy different views of the garden along the way. Our aim was to create a safety barrier that didn’t look like a barrier.
LEWIS GINTER BOTANICAL GARDEN, ROSE GARDEN MASTER PLAN | RICHMOND, VA For the rose garden area at the botanical garden, our client wanted a place not just to showcase dozens of varieties of roses, but a pleasant, quiet path with plenty of restful seating where visitors to the garden can rest and enjoy the beauty of the gardens and the views of the lake beyond. HG Design Studio was retained by Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the Rose Garden, a daily attraction for visitors, and is also the perfect location for social gatherings, weddings, and musical events. The Botanical Garden took this opportunity to fine tune this major garden feature and greatly improve and expand the rose garden plantings as well. Design challenges included redesign of the paving material to improve safety and maintainability while providing adequate space for events. Another challenge was in bringing purpose and a finished look to the turf hillside. HG designed a simple but elegant solution in the form of a terraced lawn which links the Central Garden and Conservatory to the Rose Garden and patio, with views of the lake beyond. We designed the drainage and grading to provide the well-drained soils preferred by roses, and to encourage the lawn to drain quickly after storm events.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, SOFTBALL STADIUM HG Design Studio is providing civil engineering and site design for a new softball stadium for university athletics. The existing site was a grass practice field flanked by Klockner Stadium to the west and Lannigan Field to the south. The athletics department goal was to create a compelling team and spectator experience in the core of the Athletics Precinct’s varsity competition venues. Key programmatic components of the new ballpark include a flexible indoor practice facility with modern amenities, including locker rooms, meeting area, sports medicine room, bullpens, field maintenance and coach’s offices. A new press box located above the concourse accommodates the PA/scoreboard and booth. HG provided pre-planning and engineering consulting for the Preliminary Study prior to the Request for Proposal release, whereby we provided civil and landscape considerations for the concepts. Such considerations include parking, travel distances, ADA accessibility, drainage and stormwater management, capacity of existing utilities (based on record data), field orientation, buffers, and potential permitting. HG was a part of the design team that was awarded the capital budget project. As the civil/site design engineer, during the schematic phase, we identified environmental constraints and resource protection areas through review of environmental database and local GIS records; established stormwater compliance requirements and stormwater concept plan for owner’s preferred layout option; determined water and sewer connection points and stick layout; coordinate with UVA and City of Charlottesville utilities, and fire marshal for concept approval; and prepared SD level opinion of probable site construction costs.
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, SOFTBALL STADIUM For preliminary design, we are developing a demolition plan; providing engineered layout and material selection of pedestrian and vehicular pavements; providing site grading model; determining storm collection system size and layout, and analyzing capacity of receiving systems; locating and sizing stormwater treatment measures as needed to comply with Virginia Stormwater Management Program and local jurisdictional requirements; determining water and sewer utility connection points, including existing and proposed system capacities; preparing a PD level opinion of probable site constructions costs; and meeting and coordinating with design team and local authorities having jurisdiction for permit pre-application discussions and to ensure code compliance.
