At HG, our landscape architects and civil engineers work side by side, combining aesthetic sensibility with technical acumen, which creates attractive yet functional solutions for your external built environment. Our design philosophy is that site design should perform required functions without distracting from the aesthetics of the buildings they serve.

HG intentionally maintains a small firm culture, even though we routinely compete on projects with much larger firms. We have found that clients prefer to work with the same senior staff that appeared on the submittal and attend the interview. We are keen on customer service and invite you to call the owners/partners whenever necessary. This way, we maintain relationships…over 80% of our clientele is repeat business. We have active projects in Virginia from Blacksburg to Virginia Beach, and D.C to South Boston.
DAVE GERSTENMAIER, PLA Founding Partner and Director of Design For over 35 years, Dave has accumulated an extensive and award-winning portfolio in landscape architectural design and land planning in Virginia. He started his own firm in 1991, and built a reputation for effective project delivery balancing cost, time, and quality design. In 2000, he took the helm of H&G Landscape Architects in Richmond and catapulted the firm into the preeminent landscape architectural and land planning firm in the region. Clients appreciate Dave’s passion and responsiveness resulting from the small-size firm mindset, but creative ingenuity usually characteristic of a metropolitan practice that has distinguished the firm’s work. Through Dave’s creative land planning, and design of the courtyards and grounds at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, the campus was designated “America’s Most Beautiful Hospital,” and in that same year, Dave was the recipient of The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture Impact Award for Landscape Architecture.
CHARLENE HARPER, PE, PLA, LEED AP Senior Partner and Director of Engineering Charlene has more than 25 years of experience in the fields of water resources and site development specializing in low impact development and innovative stormwater treatment designs, stormwater concepts for federal projects, and compliance strategies for MS-4 and industrial stormwater permit programs. She has managed significant contracts for both public and private sector clients, using a collaborative project approach and management style.
VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF HISTORY & CULTURE MASTER PLAN AND IMPROVEMENTS | RICHMOND, VA A $38 million fundraising campaign allowed the museum to present a friendlier face on the Boulevard, have a more prominent main entrance from its parking area, and tell a more compelling story of the museum. The focus was not on additional space, but making smarter use of the existing space. HG Design Studio’s Master Plan integrates the goal of easier, open access to all entrances with the museum’s architectural design. The columned front doorway and lobby had been described as intimidating by patrons, so the challenge for HG was to design the site with classical elements and a pedestrian-friendly gateway. At the main entrance, we designed a gracious lawn and planting beds to replace existing pavement, and the additional green space creates a connection to the adjacent Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Through our design, we achieved our clients’ vision of providing a welcoming exterior environment. Vehicular and traffic patterns, lighting and landscape plans, and standards for amenities complete the scope of landscape architecture services performed for the project. HG is currently working on a site improvements plan and parking expansion for the museum. All work at the museum has been done with Glavé & Holmes Architecture.

SCIENCE MUSEUM OF VIRGINIA MASTER PLAN UPDATES & PARKING DECK | RICHMOND, VA HG is working with Glavé & Holmes Architecture on this exciting project. The Science Museum of Virginia is embarking on the creation of a park in front of its iconic building. Stretching from Terminal Place to the west to DMV Drive to the east, the park will take over two parking lots to create a green, welcoming place in this dense and heavily-built part of the City. In front of the Children’s Museum of Richmond and a new parking structure next to the Science Museum, a series of pathways cut through rolling topography planted with native trees, groundcovers, and drought-tolerant lawn. An art plaza will accommodate a large sculpture, being commissioned separately by the Museum. The entry driveways in front of the Museum have been narrowed and surface parking removed. An open lawn and a plaza for the Earth Kugel create an open vista to the historic façade. The rolling topography and pathways pick up again on the east edge of the site, where the Moon Kugel is also relocated. A collection of Virginia native evergreen trees bookends the site to the east and the west. Along the Broad Street edge, an allee of native trees creates both a walkway and a seating area, raised about 30” above the level of the sidewalk. Small plazas at each street intersection are marked with entry monuments and create welcoming points into the site. The project is being developed in coordination with the City’s redesign of the sidewalks along Broad Street.

THE BRANCH MUSEUM OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN | RICHMOND, VA
HG was retained by the museum and the neighborhood garden club to design and restore the back terrace and green space, establishing the area as an alternative event space. Originally designed by architect John Russell Pope in the Tudor-Revival design style, HG took care to design plantings and hardscapes with consideration to the historical significance of The Branch House. It is individually listed on the Virginia Register and on the National Register of Historic Places. Our staff gave a detailed presentation to the Board of Directors and other stakeholders, and HG’s design was unanimously approved. The Branch House is presently home to The Branch Museum of Architecture and Design.
FRONTIER CULTURE MUSEUM OF VIRGINIA | STAUNTON, VA HG Design was engaged to provide civil engineering and landscape architecture services for the Frontier Museum of Virginia. The museum is comprised of both indoor and outdoor exhibits with interpreters providing a storytelling experience for guests. The site consists of rolling hills with forested areas and grass meadows depicting historic farmsteads. HG was responsible for maintaining the farmstead culture while integrating a completely new pedestrian and vehicular circulation systems, a new 30,000 sf Crossing Gallery and a large outdoor Event Lawn while maintaining the thematic character of the facility. HG prepared concept development through construction documentation and administration. Unique to the museum is the creation of wildflower meadows, a water feature, themed entry plaza and guest drop-off area, an outdoor event space and a large junction where Old World meets New World. In addition, we are designing a new 375 space parking lot, maintenance complex and office areas, food truck and cart rental facility adjacent to the Event Lawn, and stormwater management facilities inclusive of BMPs, streams tying into existing wetlands, ponds and waters.
COLLEGE OF WILLIAM & MARY MUSCARELLE MUSEUM OF ART | WILLIAMSBURG, VA HG is providing civil engineering and landscape architecture as part of the Pelli Clark Pelli team working on this fine arts museum. HG has completed the feasibility study portion of the project, which resulted in the decision to create a new building rather than renovate the existing one. The project is currently in the Schematic Development phase.
COLLEGE OF WILLIAM & MARY MEMORIAL TO THE ENSLAVED | WILLIAMSBURG, VA HG is providing landscape architecture and civil engineering services for a new Memorial to African Americans Enslaved by William & Mary. HG is designing a plaza at the memorial and a small amphitheater-like earthen mound with inset seat walls, all enclosed by a canopy of mature trees. Currently in design.
CAPITOL SQUARE MASTER PLAN | RICHMOND, VA HG Design Studio revised and updated the Master Plan for the Capitol Grounds which feature the Capitol building, a National Historic Landmark designed by Thomas Jefferson. Capitol Square serves a significant dual role as the historic seat of state government as well as being an urban oasis in downtown Richmond. The project team had to balance several competing interests in the master plan from historic preservationists, to sustainability activists, to state legislators. We established guidelines for daily, weekly and ongoing maintenance; future landscape and hardscape installations; and addressing safety concerns and citizen complaints. We created recommendations for access, circulation and parking; hardscape materials; site elements; vegetation and topography, all within the context of preserving the prominent features of this important and historic site. We also gave consideration to future maintenance with a focus on less labor-intensive practices. MANTLE, VIRGINIA INDIAN TRIBUTE | RICHMOND, VA LOCATION Richmond, VA HG Design Studio provided civil engineering and landscape architecture for the design of a permanent monument on Capitol Square as a tribute to the Commonwealth’s Indian tribes. We created construction documents to bring to life the vision of Mohawk artist, Alan Michelson. Acting primarily as the civil engineer for this one-of-a kind project, aesthetic coordination was supremely important. HG collaborated with the artist and design team to create a memorable monument space for visitors to our distinguished Virginia State Capital. Sustainable native Virginia plantings incorporated into the site augmented bioretention and complement the notable spiral wall design. Siting of the monument required working with existing exteriors and seamless integration into the Capital’s pedestrian walkways and green space.

AMERICAN CIVIL WAR MUSEUM | RICHMOND, VA The newly formed American Civil War Museum – a marriage of the American Civil War Center and Museum of the Confederacy – combines the two museums into one comprehensive site at Historic Tredegar, a National Historic Landmark. Working with the architect, HG Design Studio helped to find an appropriate spot for the new museum, taking into account the centuries-old ruins, existing structures, the need for additional parking, etc.
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA ROTUNDA NORTH STEPS & PLAZA | CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA As part of our term contract with UVA, we provided Civil Engineering and Landscape Architecture services for the update of the Rotunda Steps. For this project the north stairs and the lower plaza were replaced. The lower steps needed to move closer to the Rotunda to stay completely out of the line of the sidewalk. HG Design Studio developed a schematic site plan to include pedestrian paving and other hardscape elements including stairs and walls; site structures and other special site features.
PERKINSON CENTER FOR THE ARTS AND EDUCATION | CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA Chesterfield County has expanded their library building to add a new 500 seat community theater. The project includes an orchestra level, a pit and tech level which totals 20,000 square feet. The seating is sloped to the stage to allow theater style viewing to the performance stage. HG Design Studio provided the land planning, site design and full blown landscape plan for the Arts Center. The client preference was to extend and enhance the textural aesthetic of the adjacent Chester Library, which was also designed by HG. An illustration was prepared, with consideration of the overall site consistency and future parking requirements.

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE, CORMACK HALL AND MEMORIAL GARDEN | LEXINGTON, VA HG developed a hardscape improvement plan, landscape planting plan, lighting and irrigation plans for the grounds renovation surrounding Cormack Hall. We also reconfigured the garden to the northeast of the building to include a formal memorial archway, which we designed out of stone to complement the historic campus. We enhanced and refreshed the existing plants with formal, symmetrical plantings to complete the landscape which is watered with harvested water collected in two underground cisterns hidden under the formal lawn. HG was also tasked with maximizing LEED requirements to help the project attain the desired environmental goals. LEWIS GINTER BOTANICAL GARDEN, ROSE GARDEN MASTER PLAN | RICHMOND, VA For the rose garden area at the botanical garden, our client wanted a place not just to showcase dozens of varieties of roses, but a pleasant, quiet path with plenty of restful seating where visitors to the garden can rest and enjoy the beauty of the gardens and the views of the lake beyond. HG Design Studio was retained by Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the Rose Garden, a daily attraction for visitors, and is also the perfect location for social gatherings, weddings, and musical events. The Botanical Garden took this opportunity to fine tune this major garden feature and greatly improve and expand the rose garden plantings as well. Design challenges included redesign of the paving material to improve safety and maintainability while providing adequate space for events. Another challenge was in bringing purpose and a finished look to the turf hillside. HG designed a simple but elegant solution in the form of a terraced lawn which links the Central Garden and Conservatory to the Rose Garden and patio, with views of the lake beyond. We designed the drainage and grading to provide the well-drained soils preferred by roses, and to encourage the lawn to drain quickly after storm events.
LEWIS GINTER BOTANICAL GARDEN, ROSE GARDEN MASTER PLAN | RICHMOND, VA
LEWIS GINTER BOTANICAL GARDEN, PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE | RICHMOND, VA Designed as a “ribbon of light,” this pedestrian bridge seems to float just over the southern end of the lake and connects the Rose Garden with the Children’s Garden, two immensely-popular areas of the park. Prior to HG Design Studio’s involvement, visitors would cross over a series of angled wooden bridges that narrowed in certain places, creating a bottleneck on busy days, and making them feel like they couldn’t linger over the view if someone was behind them. HG redesigned the bridge to be much wider, with a more direct route to the popular Rose Garden area. We designed the bridge of stone columns with mesh sides and stainless steel rods to create a path that is durable and safe but looks light and open. This allows visitors to see through it to interact with the water and water plants in the area, and to enjoy different views of the garden along the way. Our aim was to create a safety barrier that didn’t look like a barrier.
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, BRODY JEWISH CENTER | CHARLOT TESVILLE, VA HG was tasked by Glavé & Holmes to provide both Civil Engineering and Landscape Architectural services. The extent of our services included the design of an accessible stone patio, ADA Ramp, Seat walls, gathering/event lawn, and site drainage.
DOVER HALL | GOOCHLAND COUNTY, VA
MIDLOTHIAN LIBRARY | CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA During the programming and schematic phase for the Midlothian Library, HG prepared several concepts for the county to consider that promotes learning and curiosity. Because HG’s staff does not always focus exclusively on utilities during schematic design, we were able to promote ideas like an outdoor classroom, and a choice of several inexpensive outdoor interactive stations for children of different ages to engage, while keeping county reviews, setbacks and approvals in mind. These concepts are provided to attract more people to the library and open the community to a wider demographic.
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, DARDEN INN & CONFERENCE CENTER | CHARLOT TESVILLE, VA As a member of the consultant team, our civil engineers are tasked with providing stormwater management, land sculpting and grading, utility routing, and permitting for the new hotel and conference center planned for the Darden Business school campus at the University of Virginia. Thoughtful consideration will be given to step the building with the sloping land to make sure it blends in with this beautiful campus. This project is currently in design.
THE CARITAS CENTER | RICHMOND, VA The CARITAS Center project involves the renovation of the existing buildings located off of Everett Street in the Manchester Canal watershed. HG Design Studio is providing Civil Engineering and Landscape Architecture services for our client, SWA Construction. HG will complete a topographic survey to supplement the Alta survey which will include topography, finished floor elevations and as built information on the exterior storm/sanitary sewer system. We will also establish parking and loading requirements and develop a schematic site plan to include vehicular paving, pedestrian paving, and other hardscape and landscape elements. UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, ALDERMAN LIBRARY EXPANSION | CHARLOT TESVILLE, VA The current project scope for the Alderman Library Renewal is comprised of 100,000 SF renovation of the original 1938 library structure (Historic Alderman Building), the demolition of the Old Stacks and adjacent areas between the Old Stacks and the wings in Historic Alderman, and the demolition of the 1967 New Stacks addition. New construction includes a 130,000-SF addition on the approximate footprint of the demolished areas. HG is responsible for civil/site design, including coordination with the University, project architects (HBRA and Clark-Nexen), and landscape architect (OLIN Studio) to address utilities, grading and drainage. Stormwater management for this project will include the capture, pretreatment and reuse of the roof drainage at the nearby Newcomb chiller plan (as a source of makeup water), which will meet all applicable stormwater nutrient reduction requirements. Other project site design aspects include realignment of Newcomb Road North and the temporary use of Nameless Field as a temporary contractor area.
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND CANNON CHAPEL GARDEN GARDEN | RICHMOND, VA HG Design Studio completed designs for the University of Richmond to master plan the east side of Cannon Chapel. The space formerly served as an exterior access route from the alter end to the main entrance of the chapel. It also was and is home to “Peggy’s Garden,” a small paved area with stone benches placed in memory of Peggy Meadows, a dedicated and loved employee of the University. A columbarium space, a worship garden and a formal gathering area for weddings, funerals and other special events were all identified as uses that were needed within close proximity to the Chapel. The space is enclosed by a curved 8 foot high brick wall with limestone caps carefully designed to match the Chapel’s architectural detail. The terraced wall provides the structure for each 8”x 8”x 12” niche and allows for planting above the niche cabinets. Approximately 3000 niches are provided throughout the garden. Both fixed bench seating around the fountain and scatter garden, and movable chairs randomly placed among the columbarium provide flexible seating for small groups. The open lawn area allows space for a more formal seating arrangement, which can be staged at the chapel door or at any perimeter location. The fountain and statuary provide a unique and special space for gatherings and is still “Peggy’s Garden” identified with a bronze and granite plaque memorializing those whose cremated remains have been interred within the scatter garden.
