HG intentionally maintains a small firm culture, even though we routinely compete on projects with much larger firms. We have found that clients prefer to work with the same senior staff that appeared on the submittal and attend the interview. We are keen on customer service and invite you to call the owners/partners whenever necessary. This way, we maintain relationships‌over 80% of our clientele is repeat business. Dave Gerstenmaier, PLA President and Director of Design For over 35 years, Dave has accumulated an extensive and award-winning portfolio in landscape architectural design and land planning in Virginia. He started his own firm in 1991, and built a reputation for effective project delivery balancing cost, time, and quality design. In 2000, he took the helm of H&G Landscape Architects in Richmond and catapulted the firm into the preeminent landscape architectural and land planning firm in the region. Clients appreciate Dave’s passion and responsiveness resulting from the small-size firm mindset, but creative ingenuity usually characteristic of a metropolitan practice that has distinguished the firm’s work. Through Dave’s creative land planning, and design of the courtyards and grounds at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, the campus was designated “America’s Most Beautiful Hospital,” and in that same year, Dave was the recipient of The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture Impact Award for Landscape Architecture.
Charlene Harper, PE, LEED AP Director of Engineering and Design Partner Charlene has more than 25 years of experience in the fields of water resources and site development specializing in low impact development and innovative stormwater treatment designs, stormwater concepts for federal projects, and compliance strategies for MS-4 and industrial stormwater permit programs. Her work focuses on the reduction of environmental impacts due to the built environment both during and post-construction, as well as identifying opportunities for water quality and flood control retrofits. Charlene is an expert in the design and installation oversight of innovative stormwater treatment techniques such as green roofs, cisterns, permeable pavements, submerged gravel wetlands, and bioretention cells in addition to traditional treatment practices such as filters and basins. She has managed significant contracts for both public and private sector clients, using a collaborative project approach and management style.
Scott’s View Mixed-Use | Richmond, VA
This Scott’s Addition location for a new $75 million ground-up project of luxury apartments, first floor retail/office and parking deck was a former industrial site. The client chose HG for civil engineering and landscape architecture combined because of the complexity of engineering and importance of creating an inviting and modern outdoor aesthetic to compete with several other mixed-use properties in this fashionable community. Amenity design includes swimming pool and surrounding outdoor kitchen, courtyard, pocket park and green wall.

Science Museum of Virginia Parking Deck | Richmond, VA
HG Design Studio is providing landscape and hardscape design for a new 400+ car parking deck. The finished project will provide clear paths of pedestrian travel to existing and proposed uses, creates a new plaza space that connects the new structure to the existing Science Museum, and establishes a new urban park. New sidewalks, plazas, and pedestrian crossings connect the proposed parking deck to the Science Museum, Children’s Museum, and new park space. A landscape of broad expanses of lawn punctuated by shade trees replaces a large portion of the existing surface parking areas establishing a new urban park. A series of rain gardens and a serpentine low ornamental fence create an edge along the West Broad Street frontage, while a series of breaks in these features invite passers-by to enter.

The Nest Apartments | Richmond, VA
HG was the civil engineering and landscape architecture firm for The Nest, which is shaping up to be one of Richmond’s premier boutique apartment complexes. Situated in trendy Scott’s Addition, this sixstory multi-family development boasts a below-grade parking garage accessed from the alley, second-story terrace pool and first-floor retail and commercial space. The $20 million, 118-unit apartment building was developed by repeat client Tom Papa. Combining civil engineering and landscape architecture provided visual and fiscal value to the project. The general scope to prepare the Plan of Development (POD) plan set and application and to respond to City of Richmond comments during the permitting phase of development was executed. Permitting included Work-In-Streets permit and Land Disturbance Permit and other site related permits. Stormwater detention to allow the project to tie to the City’s combined sewer system is provided below the footprint of the building. The property has been rezoned to TOD-1; B-7 zoning is across West Marshall Street, but TOD-1 surrounds the rear and side of the project site.

James Madison University West Parking Deck | Farmville, VA
HG designed the landscape surrounding the parking deck to create a park-like feel to the site. Staggered groupings of evergreen, flowering, and shade trees provide a sense of depth to the site while breaking up views to the parking deck. A planting bed filled with low evergreen and flowering shrubs, groundcover, and rows of flowering trees accent the parking deck’s vehicular entrance and exit, while also providing some separation for pedestrians crossing the entrance. A bioretention area for stormwater management provides another opportunity for landscape plantings to break up the expanse of lawn.

The Summit at Scott’s Addition | Richmond, VA
Located in Richmond’s fastest growing neighborhood, The Summit’s site civil engineering and landscape architecture was designed by HG. A rooftop terrace, outdoor kitchen, firepit, cornhole course and saltwater pool rounded out this luxury, six-story mixed-use building’s amenities. The 166-unit apartment building also boasts ground-floor retail space that fronts West Broad Street and wraps around a central surface below grade parking area from the alley with 198 spaces, as well as underground parking, providing additional parking spaces. HG provided value to the client by identifying one pipe in the alley to upgraded and avoid significant and expensive stormwater management additions. By locating an alternative to in-building stormwater management, the development was able to cut costs.

Capital One West Creek Parking Deck | Goochland County, VA
HG Design Studio worked with the client to renovate the exteriors of two buildings and an adjacent parking deck. Our contributions to the design included the entry plaza with complex fountain design; pedestrian crosswalks connecting the buildings with the parking deck; a suspended bridge entry to one building; and an attractive, sustainable, native plant plan to tie the campus into the surrounding natural area. The design of this office building was recently awarded four Green Globes by the Green Building Initiative, a designation reserved for select building designs which serve as national or world leaders in energy and environmental performance and projects which introduce design practices that can be adopted and implemented by others.
The Penny Apartments | Richmond, VA
This new $27 million luxury apartment building in historic Jackson Ward features a rooftop terrace, bike racks, a pool terrace and below grade parking accessed from the alley. HG provided civil engineering and landscape architecture for the architect and client, with cost-saving innovation. One example of the benefit HG’s creative problem solving: we showed the architect a design to split the building’s drainage in a way that no stormwater management was required. The design and engineering scope of the 1-acre lot included garage parking and 115,000 square foot five-story mixed-use building with 166 apartments and first floor retail.

The Spur Development | Richmond, VA
This adaptive reuse commercial property is a redevelopment of a former Scott’s Addition manufacturing facility transformed into modern office space. HG performed civil engineering and landscape architecture services for the 35,000 square foot property covering a city block, and which opened in phases. Centered around a designed urban green space, and built upon a retired railroad spur, the client requested the design team to preserve the authenticity of any industrial features as well as create beautiful landscaping and enhanced outdoor lighting the complement the historic façade.
