At HG, our landscape architects and civil engineers work side by side, combining aesthetic sensibility with technical acumen, which creates attractive yet functional solutions for your external built environment. Our design philosophy is that site design should perform required functions without distracting from the aesthetics of the buildings they serve.

HG intentionally maintains a small firm culture, even though we routinely compete on projects with much larger firms. We have found that clients prefer to work with the same senior staff that appeared on the submittal and attend the interview. We are keen on customer service and invite you to call the owners/partners whenever necessary. This way, we maintain relationships‌over 80% of our clientele is repeat business. We have active projects in Virginia from Blacksburg to Virginia Beach, and D.C to South Boston.
Dave Gerstenmaier, PLA President and Director of Design For over 35 years, Dave has accumulated an extensive and award-winning portfolio in landscape architectural design and land planning in Virginia. He started his own firm in 1991, and built a reputation for effective project delivery balancing cost, time, and quality design. In 2000, he took the helm of H&G Landscape Architects in Richmond and catapulted the firm into the preeminent landscape architectural and land planning firm in the region. Clients appreciate Dave’s passion and responsiveness resulting from the small-size firm mindset, but creative ingenuity usually characteristic of a metropolitan practice that has distinguished the firm’s work. Through Dave’s creative land planning, and design of the courtyards and grounds at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, the campus was designated “America’s Most Beautiful Hospital,” and in that same year, Dave was the recipient of The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture Impact Award for Landscape Architecture.

The Caritas Center project involves the renovation of the existing buildings located off of Everett Street in the Manchester Canal watershed. HG Design Studio is providing Civil Engineering and Landscape Architecture services for our client, SWA Construction. HG will complete a topographic survey to supplement the Alta survey which will include topography, finished floor elevations and as built information on the exterior storm/sanitary sewer system. We will also establish parking and loading requirements and develop a schematic site plan to include vehicular paving, pedestrian paving, and other hardscape and landscape elements.
The Sauer Center The Sauer Center is a 40 acre mixed-use city infill project anchored by a new Whole Foods store. HG Design Studio provided the master plan, which includes a 125unit apartment complex with high-end amenities and several office buildings such as the C.F Sauer Company headquarters, which will receive a complete renovation. Several of the buildings on the site are historic and will be fully restored while new buildings are also added. Efforts are being made to maintain an urban look and improve walkability by providing a pedestrian plaza and corridors throughout the site. The plan also includes a GRTC Pulse station, streetscaping along Broad Street, and a parking deck servicing the apartment complex and the historic Putney building. The entire site will be upgraded to be ADA accessible.

Richmond Raceway Reimagined HG Design Studio is providing civil engineering and landscape architecture services for Richmond Raceway Reimagined, a $30 million infield redevelopment project by International Speedway Corporation (ISC). The new project will bring a variety of enhanced amenities for fans, teams, sponsors and other stakeholders to the iconic Richmond infield. HG’s first project with ISC was an incredible opportunity to work closely with Henrico County administration and staff on a very fast-paced, high profile project. HG facilitated meetings between ISC and the County to introduce the project concepts, goals, and schedule needs at all levels during the programming and schematic design phase. As the project was on an expedited schedule, HG also held meetings early in the design development phase to engage review staff and explore compliance options for stormwater management, permitting, traffic and utility models in particular. When concerns about the aging water system and meter capacity were raised, HG suggested breaking the POD into phases in order to study the situation with DPU without impacting the construction schedule. Working closely with DPU staff on multiple modeling iterations led to an innovative metering solution that saved ISC significant money while also improving water and fire flows to the Raceway Complex.
Richmond Raceway Reimagined will provide the facility a completely redesigned and modernized infield to Richmond. Race fans will be able to get closer than ever to NASCAR’s best with new Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series garages and a fan viewing walkway providing full immersion into the sport. Fans will also be able to watch race cars complete their runs through inspection stations in the new infield. In addition to the new garage walkways and inspection viewing areas, other new attractions include expansive Richmond infield social and engagement areas with concessions. Gatorade Victory Lane will now be staged in closer view of the grandstands for fans to have a better experience celebrating with Richmond race winners. The location will provide new fan engagement opportunities for pre-race access, driver appearances, and entertainment programming. An 80-person club experience with roof access will overlook the new Gatorade Victory Lane as part of the modernized infield. Two new garage suites with a view into the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series garages will provide an unprecedented experience in Richmond; similar to modern stadiums and arenas around the world. Media will be hosted in a new Media Center with broadcast booths, a conference room, and hospitality space. Due in part to our fantastic working relationship with staff and their openness to collaborative problem solving, the project met its critical milestone deadlines and is about to host its ribbon cutting for the grand opening on September 19th, 2018.
Innsbrook Office Park Competition for corporate talent has increased, so when Highwoods Properties, purveyors of much of Innsbrook Office Park, decided to refresh and refurbish dated spaces, they contacted HG Design Studio to create sophisticated outdoor amenities that appeal and attract discriminating tenants. First in order was the aged signage at the corner of Cox Road and West Broad Street. HG sited a new sign concept and provided grading to elevate the sign in the median. By providing a 3D study of the intersection for future sign accent walls, the client was able to better express their entry vision. After completing base concept and planting plan, we coordinated with sign installer, irrigation, lighting and planting contractors to deliver the product. Phase two of the restoration consisted of creating an outdoor terrace plan for a 3,000 square foot rear deck at one of the office buildings in the park. (Approx. $350,000) Schematics and construction documents were prepared by HG, and we coordinated a structural review. Updated planting and enhanced pedestrian lighting were implemented, and were connected to existing trail system. The client then asked us to reconfigure the front entry drop off and add a plaza to complement the lobby renovation. Front entry area to be completed in Fall 2017. Highwoods II and the Saxon Building were part of the next phase of design updates. HG was tasked with renovating the entry and providing a parking study. A schematic study to renovate the main entry exterior into an urban plaza was an additional project for the client. As a result of working on time and budget with Highwoods, HG was referred to longtime tenant Markel, where we were commissioned to renovated the back amphitheater terrace to a more useable space that included an IPE deck and cable handrail. HG’s design provided more useable square footage to the rear terrace of the building by adding a floating deck over an existing sloped hillside. Updated planting and connections to the existing lakeside walk were instituted.

Virginia Commonwealth University Streetscapes HG Design Studio has designed a significant portion of the downtown landscape as a result of holding the VCU Term Contract. The challenge of landscape/hardscape design for flagship projects such as the Cary Street Gym, General Classroom Building, and School of Engineering among others, was to integrate the urban site with the built environment. As a result, HG has developed an expertise in designing for the urban environment, creating spaces that people want to be in, despite their proximity to passing traffic. Through the thoughtful use of screening plants, site furnishings and shade trees, we have created meaningful places and pocket parks within a busy downtown center. Streetscape designs bring together hardscape, plants, lighting, irrigation, and site amenities to soften the city’s hard edges.

Virginia Commonwealth University, Schools of Business and Engineering For the new Business School and second phase of the Engineering School at Virginia Commonwealth University, HG created schematic designs through construction drawings and specifications for all landscape and streetscape elements, pedestrian hardscape, site furnishings and irrigation, following the requirements of the BCOM submittal process.
Virginia Commonwealth University 12th Street Pedestrian Plaza For this project, HG Design Studio created a site plan for a pedestrian plaza in place of an existing street. One challenge for the project was that the plaza had to be designed to function whether or not the City of Richmond agreed to close the street and turn it over to the university. Additionally, a portion of the site is over an existing parking deck, so we have worked in close coordination with the structural engineer to develop a paving system that would satisfy the university’s design standard while working in the site constraints. When BCOM requested a pedestrian phasing plan during construction to allow for movement of pedestrians through a very complicated work zone, HG sat down with the owner and came up with a list of entry points and known pedestrian patterns and to create a phasing plan for the contractor to execute. We considered school schedules, construction phasing and delivery date and created a phasing plan to accommodate this request. Design elements of HG’s site plan included pedestrian areas, vehicular paving, vehicular control elements such as specialty paving and bollards, crosswalks, walls, ramps, stairs, site lighting, and site furniture and amenities. In addition, we created hardscape design and details, planting plans, lighting plans, grading plans, specifications and periodic cost estimates. LOCATION Henrico County, VA
West Broad Village is a 115-acre mixed-use development located at West Broad Street and I-64 in western Henrico County, Virginia. The development combines residential, retail, office, hotel, and recreational uses all within a walkable community. HG Design Studio was retained by the developer during rezoning to work with the architect in developing an open space plan, conceptual park design, and landscape standards for streetscapes and screening. We prepared a comprehensive open space plan and conceptual designs for the main street park, community clubhouse and pool area, residential courtyards, and the linear park. The village buildings and open spaces connect through the urban streetscape network. Combining conceptual plans, images, and textual descriptions, the project team generated detailed design standards for the rezoning submittal.

Corporate Campus Headquarters HG Design Studio was contracted to perform Civil Engineering and Landscape Architecture for a series of projects for this private campus,, incorporating two new buildings, extensive outdoor amenities, green space, and a second parking deck. Emphasis was placed on collaborative outdoor green space, pedestrian connectivity and environmentally responsible campus features. A complex and sleek entry fountain and plaza design was vital to the clients desire to attract top talent, as well as views and connections to and from other buildings. The centrally located meadow and stormwater management combination provides most common vista from each building. A pedestrian bridge designed by HG spans stormwater rain garden filtration system. HG navigated topography with a series of steps and a ramp system designed by HG, as well as an intricate native plant plan to tie the campus into the surrounding natural area. Client project schedule required diligence and internal planning to devote proper resources and priority to design and construction, as well as knowledge based construction administration. Other Civil Engineer and Landscape Architecture projects include the following: The Commons Outdoor Terrace: This project required high quality design and extensive construction administration. Dave worked directly with the client and Leo A Daly, an architecture firm out of Nebraska, on this project. The Den Renovation: HG collaborated with HLW Architects out of New York City to incorporate a new entry access and building extension between campus Buildings 5 and 6. Both Civil and Landscape Architecture services were offered. HG ensured that a continuity of the campus design standards were incorporated into the renovation project. Thoughtful consideration of new bike and pedestrian circulation, planting design and utility reconfigurations were all part of the final design. Town Center Refresh: An office campus facility expansion, HG worked with Gensler and their Schematic Design to deliver this project’s Design Development and CD’s for civil/landscape within one month’s turnaround. HG had to consider impact on existing utility ducts, grading and drainage, hardscape and landscape design. West Creek Village: Seeking a rare LEED-NC certification for a private owner, HG engaged in design and expansion of the site green space and amenities requiring integration with existing facilities, pedestrian connections, courtyard and garden, upper and lower patios, lighting, concrete ramp, retaining walls and metal handrails. HG partnered with architecture firm SMBW with substantial design completion in February 2017.

Dining Terrace HG was tasked with assisting the architect with the design of the new outdoor dining terrace, and providing civil and landscape design for the perimeter of the terrace and surrounding land form affected by the expansion. We created bid documents showing how the addition would drain and how an existing storm sewer line and sanitary sewer line could be accommodated. HG served as construction manager, providing hands-on site supervision and working out a temporary pedestrian traffic pattern to keep the building accessible during construction. We were asked to bring smaller, local contractors to the table and bid out all the hardscape, grading, drainage, landscape and irrigation. When a communication pole and wire were encountered during construction, we were able to orchestrate working around the conflict while maintaining the integrity of the design since we were already on the site. In addition, we helped to keep costs down by working with trusted contractors, scrutinizing invoices, and making sure contracts were met to the complete satisfaction of our client. With two weeks of work to remain, the word came out that our client wanted the project done in half that time. Due to our strong relationship with the subcontractors and our ability to react quickly to the job site, we were able to stay on top of everything and even get our partners to work through the weekend. Our client was very appreciative of our efforts as the project was completed on their compressed time frame and was open for business. We were lauded for our ability to remain flexible as the scope of work changed, and to complete complex deliverables despite an aggressive deadline. As a result, the client has trust and a level of loyalty with the knowledge that with our supervision, the project will be completed beyond the satisfaction of all parties concerned.
Cary Court Shopping Center
The Cary Court Shopping Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is an example of the art deco architectural style. Built in the 1930’s, it stands as Richmond’s first strip shopping center. This new concept of parking in front of the stores made Cary Court a popular Richmond shopping destination. HG Design Studio worked on the redesign of the front parking lot, sidewalks, pedestrian seating and dining areas, and streetscape in the City of Richmond’s right of way along Cary Street. Specific site details included site lighting, fencing, and seating, planting, and paving details. In the rear, re-design of the parking lot, which extends to Belmont Street and Ellwood Avenue, included lighting, dumpster enclosures, and planting design. Parking lot design included addressing traffic flow, parking space, and planting island changes. Four large 12-inch diameter/caliper oak trees were installed in the front parking lot via cranes.
Bon Secours, Center for Healthy Living (After) This urban renewal project creates a welcoming presence in one of Richmond’s most at-risk areas. Renovated in conjunction with longtime client, Bon Secours, who has operated a community hospital in the East End of Richmond for decades, the project demonstrates the commitment to investing in this neighborhood near some of the city’s most vulnerable populations. HG Design Studio was tasked with transforming a decayed, abandoned and blighted site into a pedestrian friendly outdoor park, with benches (which are almost always full) and a reuse of the gas station canopy to provide shade to benches and tables below. This adaptive reuse project converted a dilapidated gas station, Parsley’s, into a place where members of the community can meet, chat, and enjoy a cup of coffee. The center also gives employees of the Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital – located just across the street – a place to take a break and engage with members of the community. Previously, there was nowhere to wander outside the hospital walls. A new 1,800 square foot addition will be home to the Front Porch Café, a coffee shop operated by Church Hill Activities and Tutoring (CHAT) to provide job training and build life skills for young adults in the area, many of whom lack older adult role models. HG Design Studio is honored to be part of the design and construction team that benefits the community and is spurring more economic development in the area.

CEDARFIELD SENIOR LIVING HG Design Studio was inserted into this large and multi-phased expansion project to provide landscape architecture for the gardens and exterior spaces surrounding the new Wellness Building, four additional courtyard gardens dotted throughout the property, and perimeter planting for additions to the Independent Living building and Household facility. Cedarfield is situated on 90 wooded acres, and the presentation of its grounds is integral to its mission to enrich the quality of life of its residents. An essential part of our charge is to create landscapes that conform and correspond with the existing campus, and to work in collaboration with the facilities staff, including the horticulturalist on plant selections.
LOCATION Henrico County, VA
Currently in-design, our landscape architects are designing attractive, pedestrian-friendly garden spaces accessible to residents of all abilities. These include a Secret Garden courtyard, a Memory Care courtyard, a New Resident courtyard, and planting quadrangles adjacent to a loading dock and two building additions. Client and architectural input is integrated into the programming and schedule in order to attain consensus, desired budget, and design deliverables, including presentation of rendered landscape concepts. HG is evaluating existing POD submittals for information relevant to the proposed design and coordinating plans with county officials to ensure compliance. Selection of plantings suitable for the area and the residents is part of our process, and HG will be soliciting bids from contractors for preliminary estimates of construction budgets.
