ased on directives from Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, concerning the preservation and documentation of UAE heritage, and welcoming participation by the world’s various cultures and people. The Fazza Championships are held every year to achieve the goals

established by His Highness. The Fazza Championships, which are viewed as local sports, reflect pride in the national identity of both UAE citizens and residents, including young adults, teens and children. The championships also serve to reinforce the society’s cohesion with the government and national leadership and the services they provide to advance all sectors of society. With the commencement of the first championship in 2002, the Fazza Youlah Tournament became a highly popular young people’s event that drew over 17,000 contestants and even set a world record for number of participants. Registering a significant impact on the society, this championship has achieved its stated goal of strengthening young people’s sense of national identity. Evident by the rising numbers of youth who have begun wearing the traditional local dress. The year 2003 witnessed the addition of two more championships. One was the Falconry Championship, which now draws more than 7,000 participants annually, and the other was the Open Shooting Championship for Men and Women–Saktoun Rifle, which now draws upwards of 2,000 participants annually, with significantly higher numbers registered last season. The year 2006 witnessed the introduction of the Freediving Championship, which contributed to the breaking of world records. Contestants in the professional division came from all over the world, thereby placing this tournament in the ranks of world-class championships. As for the year 2007, it saw the addition of the Saluki Championships, which draw large numbers of participants and aficionados of heritage-related sports, some of them tourists, and some UAE residents. In 2008 there was a further addition of the Fazza Championships for the Disabled and the

Ghaith belonging to Hamdan Bin Mohammed wrests first place in the Horr Wahsh Farkh division. Ghaith, belonging to Fazza, scores the best time on the level of Farkh and Jirnas in the first entry. On 9 January 2017, Ghaith, belonging to His Highness Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, won first place in the Horr Wahsh Farkh division on Day 8 of the Fazza Falconry Championship (Live Prey) held in Dubai’s Al Ruwayya region.

19.353 seconds

The fastest time scored by Ghaith on the level of both local Horr Wahsh Farkh and local Horr Wahsh Jirnas divisions, and was the only bird to go below the 20-second mark.

Dubai, President of Dubai’s Athletic Council, guided by falconer Ghayyath Al Hilali and supervised by falconer Suhail Al Kitby, scored the winning time of 20.275 seconds. Ghaith specializes in hunting, and had just returned from a hunting expedition ten days before the championship. However, given its extraordinary qualities, it was able to perform superbly even in this type of race. Then came His Highness’ magnanimous gesture in which he passed on his first prize to B6 owned by Suwaidan Dumaithan Suwaidan, who had scored a time of 20.712 seconds, followed by Al Ghannami of the F3 team guided by Rashid Al Kindi with a time of 21.101 seconds.

His Highness’ participation from the beginning had been a source of moral support that would contribute to the continuation of this championship, which is inspired by real-life falconry and hunting, and which aims to preserve the UAE’s cultural heritage and to reward and honor all who take part in it. – Suad Ibrahim Darwish, Director of Championships

Suad Ibrahim Darwish, Director of Championships at the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center, welcomed his Highness’s participation, noting that it offered a great deal to boost contestants’ morale, and raised the level of challenge and competition among participants in the falconry championship. On 13 January 2017, His Highness Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, awarded the first place prize his falcon Ghaith had won in the local Horr Wahsh Farkh sheikhs division to B6, which had come in second place, an act of generosity which is consistent with his aim of motivating participants to excel and of rewarding earnest effort. This noble gesture was the crowning event of the 11-day championship, which witnessed participation from both local falcons and falcons from other Gulf countries. The Fazza Falconry Championship is the largest event organized thus far by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center. Darwish noted that His Highness’ participation from the beginning had been a source of moral support that would contribute to the continuation of this championship, which is inspired by real-life falconry and hunting, with an aim to preserve the UAE’s cultural heritage and to reward and honor all who take part in it. Ghaith specializes in hunting and had not received sufficient training to enter races and fly at low altitudes. Nevertheless, the rarity and unique qualities of this bird enabled it to win the title.

He said, “We received no objections or complaints. Instead, participants accepted violations with a positive attitude, which reflects their growth as athletes. We also observed a significant degree of self-discipline and heightened levels of skill and expertise, all of which contributed to the championship’s success.” Al Ali added, “Out of 130 airplane falconry competitions for the general public and the sheikhs, we registered only two violations, which is more than reasonable. The two violations registered involved the bird’s not doing a complete revolution around the funnel, and a bird’s going off trajectory, both of which require that the violating bird be disqualified. Hence, we are looking at high levels of professionalism in every sense of the word.”

According to Demaithan bin Suwaidan, Head of the Fazza Championships – Falconry committee, the current season was marked by numerous positive aspects and developments, foremost among them being the participating falconers’ commitment, which greatly facilitated the Organizing Committee’s task and reflected participants’ steadily improving levels of skill and performance. He stated, “Competition was at its fiercest from day one of the championship, as evidenced by the extremely close scores.” Weather conditions also contributed to the championship’s success. Dumaithan added, “We had no strong winds throughout the days of the championship, and responses to weather conditions were highly professional. We had to postpone only one day because of rain, while the remaining days went smoothly, which contributed to the distinctive scores achieved.”

New to Last Season: The Prediction Contest

Ahmad Mubarak Al Matyouee won the prize in a new contest in which people compete to see who can predict the winners of the Elite Championship. The contest, in which more than 4,000 people participated, was launched by the Organizing Committee through the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center’s social media account. Al Matyouee was one of only two people who successfully predicted the identities of two of the winning birds. A lot was cast to determine which of the two contestants would receive the prize, and the lot fell to Al Matyouee, who won a brand-new Nissan Navara.

The new mechanism for the Saluki championship this season included ten qualifying rounds for the amateur class, while the race consisted of five rounds for males and five rounds for females for a distance of 2.5 kilometers. The three top winners in each round were then qualified to compete with the professional class, which was established without qualifying rounds in the finals. The prizes for this season were granted to the ten top participants in each competition of the Saluki championship. The professional class competitions were divided into two races. The first race, with a distance of 1 kilometer, included a round for male dogs (grey hounds), and a round for females. As for the second, 2.5-kilometer race, it also included a round for male dogs and a round for females – professional class. Jumaa Khalifa Al Muhairi, Chairman of the Saluki Championship Committee, stated that sorting the rounds and holding a qualifying championship for the amateur class followed by final competitions provides greater opportunities for amateurs to participate. The qualification of the three best hunting dogs from each round brings the final number in the competitions to 15 male dogs and 15 female dogs, which makes the competition smoother, more challenging and

They are also marked by the diversity of their system designs, and by qualitative models which aim to ensure the survival of the UAE’s cultural and intangible heritage, and to transform it into popular sports and exciting competitions that appeal to all sectors of Emirati society, including children, teenagers, women, the elderly and everyone with dreams and ambitions. Since the opening banners were unfurled with the first tournament, the Championships Department has striven to earmark many of the Fazza championships for juniors, thereby ensuring that the local heritage is passed on to the upcoming generation, and that a sense of national identity is instilled in them from an early age.

At this event, which took place from 4-8 October 2016 on the Abu Dhabi exhibition grounds, the interactive platform designed to acquaint people with the championships and activities held by the center drew large groups of visitors. Ascending the center’s podium on the exhibition’s opening day, His Excellency Abdullah Hamdan Bin Dalmook, CEO of the Hamdan bin Mohammed Heritage Center, praised the efforts of the exhibition’s organizers and HHC’s work teams. It bears noting that HHC’s platform was much larger than the two previous years, with an area exceeding 240 square meters, and was designed to display the heritage-related dimension of the championships. The Championships Department has also been divided into a number of main sections, each of which has been linked to a screen displaying video clips that give visitors a general idea about each championship. For the first time, the platform also provided a simulator for shooting practice (aiming) in the presence of a shooting coach to encourage visitors to interact with the shooting championships, which are preceded by free courses on HHC’s practice field. In addition, the platform has been enriched by a large display of photos from all of the Fazza championships highlighting the most notable shots of contestants from the United Arab Emirates, the region and the world. The platform also included a mini-exhibition of the Wathiqati Initiative with more than 2,400 documents on display.

Al Mtwassf

by Abdullah Hamdan Bin Dalmook An artistic and literary portrait of existence ne of the most significant works published by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center, Al Mtwassf presents an artistic and literary portrait of existence gleaned from the jewels of history. It sums up a journey which took the author into the depths of folk literature, which is of no less lexical, semantic, and descriptive value than works written and preserved in literary or classical Arabic. Indeed, folk literature has enabled historians to chronicle and describe societal changes over lengthy intervals of time. In the course of writing this book, the author delved deeply into meanings and creative images inspired by wellknown folk sayings and proverbs, the collection of which involved him in a long, arduous process.

O

In the words of Abdullah Hamdan Bin Dalmook,

Folk literature has been recognized by historians as the people’s voice, the expression and reflection of their communities’ customs, traditions and more. Our aim in this book has been to dive into the sea of Arab folk art and literary expression that belongs uniquely to the United Arab Emirates, a state which is no less deep-rooted than its cultural heritage and its literature.

In order to raise up an educated, cultured generation that takes pride in its local vocabulary and its cultural heritage, the HHC undertook three years ago to found the Mtwassf Competition in cooperation with numerous schools in the United Arab Emirates. The third round of the Mutawassif competition last season witnessed broad participation by students from various grades, a fact which confirms the importance of enhancing the youth’s awareness of the Emirati heritage, including ancient expressions and proverbs, through a cultural initiative inspired by the motto, “Those who have no past have no present or future.”

A cohesive Heritage Village was built in the aim of promoting the national identity and reviving the UAE’s heritage, in order for visitors not only to hear of heritage or traditional lifestyle, but also to experience it from people who know it first-hand. The Heritage Village simulates the three dominant styles of living in the UAE; mountain, coastal, and desert life. A replica of our ancestors‘ houses in the mountain areas has been built including “Saffa’ House”, “Al Yens” and “Al Rahaa”, while other replicas of houses from the coastal areas include “Bakhar or Bahreez” and “Kirin Tents”, and replicas of houses in the desert include “Bait Al Sha’ar” and “Al Hathir”. The replicas were built using the same materials and designs, and furnished with the same furniture that was used from the era 1850 to 1930.
