English Electives 2019-2020


A note to students: Two electives in the English Department are biennial: they run every other year. They appear in the course outline booklet even if they are not running in the current school year. The electives in this presentation are all offered in the 20192020 school year, but will not run if registration minimums are not met.


AP Capstone Research n

● Take as an elective or required course ● Explore a topic of personal interest ● Learn research methodology ● Prerequisite: AP Seminar


AP Capstone - Seminar (English 10 credit) n ●

Take as your required English 10 course. ● Replaces English 10R or English 10H. ● Question, Research, Explore, Develop Arguments, Collaborate.


Creative Writing I -- IV ● Write original works in a variety of genres ● Publish original works in your school’s literary magazine


Debate n

● Learn Lincoln/Douglas format of debate ● Reinforce public speaking skills (Public Speaking elective is a prerequisite) ● Discuss current hot topics of the day


Film Criticism I & Film Criticism II In Film Criticism I & Film Criticism II you will study movies, appreciate what makes a good movie good, and learn how to be an effective critic. ● ● ● ● ● ●

View movies from a variety of genres Examine the elements of filmmaking Explore the role film plays in modern life Examine ways in which film impacts society Analyze forms of cinema (theatrical, TV, online) View animation, documentary, experimental, blockbuster movies

Note: Film Criticism I is NOT a prerequisite for Film Criticism II. You may take one or both classes in either order you choose.

Hip Hop Literature and Culture (runs odd years 2019-20) ● Explores the roots, perceptions, and role of Hip Hop in history, society and the media. ● Identify themes, literary techniques, and issues of hiphop. ● Discuss the controversies and debates that surround and complicate the culture. ● Explore the music of the movement, Old School and


Journalism I and II: Media & News Literacy ● Learn seven different n styles of journalistic reporting, including editorial writing, feature writing, sports, news, etc. ● Study ethics, law, and history of journalism! ● Become published in the school newspaper!


Mythology and the Hero’s Journey n

● Study myths from all over the world ● Examine connections between astronomy and mythology ● Regular visits to school planetarium (East)

Senior Experience*

(Not an elective but an option

for ● Grade Senior 12 YearELA&SS) Experience is an interdisciplinary class that provides real-world application of the skills and knowledge students acquire prior to entering twelfth grade. ● It promotes independence, self-discipline, initiative, advocacy, and the ability to be an effective communicator and leader. ● Students attend a double-period humanities class three days per week and attend an internship of their choosing two days per week. ● The curricular portion is taught by an English and social studies teacher and has been designed around a host of modern global issues that affect students’ daily lives.
