Relearn and Rethink Gradebook and the Parent Portal Update your knowledge base, hands-on and spend time with colleagues in discussion with Infinite Campus Gradebook. Refine and relearn concepts for the proper construction of grading profiles for your classes. Roll over your 09-10 gradebook. Be ready to go for 2010-11! Kidspiration and Inspiration: Brainstorming and Diagramming for the Elementary Student Kidspiration and Inspiration are “visual thinking” and idea mapping tools that enable students to gather, organize, analyze, evaluate and communicate ideas using icons, images, photos, videos, sound files and links to other resources. Both Kidspiration, for k4 grade students, and Inspiration, for 5-12 grade students, help develop strong thinking skills, strengthen reading and writing skills, and build conceptual understanding in math. In this workshop, teachers will develop activities using these tools for their specific curricular areas. Teachers will learn how to create concept webs that organize students’ thinking and also learn how to access pre-made templates for specific curricular areas. *Teachers must bring materials for topics or ideas for a mind-mapping activity. HHH Instructional Computing Summer and Fall 2010 PDP Courses Google Lit Trips: Travel Through Literature or Time With This New Technology Google Lit Trips will allow educators, especially English and Social Studies instructors to take a virtual journey and bring literature an/or history to life. Google Lit Trips interfaces with Google Earth to create a literary or historical map that plots a virtual course of the life and events of a character in literary works or history. Teachers can provide their students with a visual support and hands on interaction while combining history, geography, and literature. In this course, educators will explore shared Google Lit Trips and learn the basic skills to create their own Google Lit virtual tour. 5 hours PDP Location: Greenspan CO room 208 Date: Thursday July 8 Time: 8 am – 1 pm Instructor: Michelle Jacobs
iLife 9: Investigate the NEW iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, iTunes, and GarageBand Applications for Creative Assessments This summer, all Mac computers in the District will undergo a major multimedia upgrade in the form of iLife 9. Just as Microsoft Office is a suite for word-processing, calculating and presenting, iLife is a suite for various multimedia projects. In this workshop, participants will touch upon all components of the series for use as tools in their instruction and as ways creating creative student assessments: • iPhoto for photo archiving, simple photo editing, and slideshow and book development • iMovie (a MAJOR application upgrade—more like a NEW application) for video editing and movie production • iDVD for DVD authoring of videos and slideshows • GarageBand for development of enhanced podcasts Participants will utilize the new FLIP camcorders during this session and will create a short video on a theme selected by the instructor. The workshop also includes demonstrations of how to then create a DVD from the video as well as a podcast. If you are a newbie to the use of multimedia in your classes or if you have used the old iLife 6 multimedia suite and need to know about the vast amount of changes in iLife 9, this course is definitely for you! HHH Instructional Computing Summer and Fall 2010 PDP Courses Delicious and Visual Thesaurus This workshop will introduce participants to several new technology tools to use within their practice. Are your “favorites” or “bookmarks” on several different computers? Are you sometimes at home and wish you had access to all your bookmarks or favorites on your computer at school? We have the solution!! The Delicious bookmarking tool will enable staff members to save all their websites on their own webpage and then produce lists of web resources to embed into their eBoards and wikis to direct their students to Internet sites for research and enrichment. The Visual Thesaurus will be investigated as a way of helping students develop their language skills. The Visual Thesaurus is an interactive dictionary and thesaurus which creates word maps that blossom with meanings and branch out to related words. Its innovative display encourages exploration and learning. “Create an HHH Wiki” Workshop; Developing Your Wiki On the New HHH Wiki Server Half Hollow Hills now has its own wiki server! Participants in this workshop will be guided in developing a wiki for use in their classes as a collaboration and/or information site for their students. Using this unique web-based tool, staff members will create a private Internet space where ONLY their specifically chosen students/colleagues can collaborate on such activities as • Developing study /review guides---Great for AP collaborative course reviews! • Project development with peer review • Group authoring • Tracking a group project • Data Collection • Presentations • Group/team collaborations for Professional Learning Community work **Prerequisite: This is a workshop session and participants must have an understanding of what a wiki is and a concept of what activity they will create with the wiki. Creating a Paperless Classroom with School Weblockers, and an Assist From Blogger and Google Docs For secondary staff only Tired of constantly shuffling and wasting paper? Investigate how easily you can start developing a paperless classroom! IN the first part of this workshop you will learn how you can give virtual handouts to students through the District’s Weblockers subscription, a portal where every teacher has the ability to hand out assignments to their classes and where every student has the ability to hand work into their teachers. Make assessments of turned in assignments that report back to students’ accounts, and have automatic records of those assessments. Classes change? Students shift? No Problem. Updates to your Weblocker classes are automatic. Files can be accessed and posted from any Internet connected computer. Digital drop boxes are automatically created and assigned for each class. You can even see when students last logged in, what HW they downloaded, and when they uploaded their completed work. No more papers to carry around, keep organized, and return to students! It’s all automated online! Voicethreads Workshop: A Multimedia Commenting and Collaboration Tool A Voicethread enables you to transform visual media into collaborative spaces. This Internet-based technology allows every contributor to easily record audio commentary about ideas, topics and experiences that are important to them--an event, a project, or a milestone. Students then “invited in” can comment through their computer’s microphone or by simply typing. In a classroom setting, students can tell their story in their own voice, and then share it with the world. For teachers, a Voicethread offers a single container to capture and then share all the diverse personalities of an entire class, allowing each student to tell a story in their own voice and then share it globally. The second session of this workshop will allow teachers to develop their own Voicethread for a class project. Come prepared with ideas! 21st Century Information Literacy: Accessing and Evaluating Information (For Middle School Staff) In this complex Information Age it is imperative that we as well as our students pay attention to the increasingly technical and ethical issues of information literacy in traditional print, multimedia, and computing arenas. This workshop will explore the ability find, evaluate, process, use, and cite information found in each of these areas. Learn about electronic books and how they work with computers and portable devices such as the “Playaway,” “Nook” and “Kindle” and ipod.. Create research projects electronically. The New iMovie: An In-depth Look At Easy Video Production Encourage individual expression, spawn creativity, revitalize your content, promote collective knowledge construction and individual reflection, and offer your students a variety of experiences to engage in authentic learning with the new iMovie video-editing program. This in-depth series of classes will have even the most inexperienced teacher developing enough skills to help their students produce quality videos. Learn how edited videos can then easily be “shared out” to DVDs, TeacherTube, and the HHH podcast server. Participants will be given FLIP camcorders for use during the workshop. Spreadsheet Fun in the Elementary Classroom This introductory course will enable teachers to use the program Excel as a professional productivity tool as well as teach students how to utilize the program as a tool in all curriculum areas. Teachers will learn how to create class management documents such as behavior charts, grade books, calendars, daily/weekly schedules, and student databases. Emphasis, however, will be placed on learning the skills necessary to show students how to aggregate data, perform calculations, and create charts of data such as pictographs, bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts. Spreadsheets can be integrated into social studies, science, language arts, and math lessons to help students analyze and understand data. This 5 hour workshop will introduce you to the collaborative opportunities of Google Documents, Google Spreadsheets, Google Forms survey and polling tool, and Google Calendar.
