Relay For Life at Half Hollow Hills School News! The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event taking place at Half Hollow Hills School District is proud to present exciting “News”! The relay baton has been passed from the Dynamic Duo of Pam Schwartz and Debbie Picker to the Fantastic Four, Annemarie Gallipoli, Sheree Givre, Sharon McCune and Gabrielle Traina! This year’s relay event will have some important changes to hopefully bring even more community members together to fight cancer. The date of this year’s event will be Sunday, June 6 from 12pm until 6pm with a survivor’s brunch from 1030am until the event start time of noon. Also, this year’s event will have a theme that will be making everyone clown around – a carnival theme will be the taking place at our new location of West Hollow Middle School! Although there are some new changes – we must remember that the mission is the same: CELEBRATE THE LIVES OF THOSE WHO HAVE BATTLED CANCER. THE STRENGTH OF SURVIVORS INSPIRES OTHERS TO CONTINUE TO FIGHT. REMEMBER LOVED ONES LOST TO THE DISEASE. AT RELAY, PEOPLE WHO HAVE WALKED ALONGSIDE THOSE BATTLING CANCER CAN GRIEVE AND FIND HEALING. FIGHT BACK! WE RELAY BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN TOUCHED BY CANCER AND DESPERATELY WANT TO PUT AN END TO THE DISEASE. MAKE A COMMITMENT TO SAVE LIVES BY TAKING UP THE FIGHT. Four years ago we started the Girls on the GO – mother/daughter Relay team together. At that time, my mother-in-law was going through lung cancer treatments and I was working in the city and felt helpless as I was not able to help my husband and his sister to drive her to all of her doctor appointments.. I felt that RELAY was a great way to do my part in her fight against cancer. Additionally, I felt it was a positive way to bond with Lindsay and her friends and their moms. In the past three years our team has worked together to raise over $ 30,000 in the fight against cancer and our girls have done so much to keep us going. This past year they even received recognition from the town of Huntington. This past year my own mom is fighting her own fight against breast cancer and so now I am doing my part to help both my mom and my mother-in-law as well as all of the others out their in their fight against cancer by becoming a co-chair for Relay for Life.
f{xÜxx Z|äÜx I’m Sheree Givre, mother of Eliana Givre a junior at Half Hollow Hills High School East. Four years ago, my daughter mentioned in passing that we are doing something for the American Cancer Society with her four girlfriends and their mothers. I said sure, not really knowing what was involved but agreeing that this would be a good thing to do. As the time for the relay came closer I came to realize what Relay for Life was and what was involved. As an Emergency Medicine Physician I couldn’t believe that I agreed to do an extra “overnight shift”. Our team, 5 girls and their mothers became very involved in the organization of the relay and we became one of the highest fundraising teams. The night of the relay became one of the most memorable nights of my life. Watching the survivor lap, seeing the luminaries lit up on the track seats, spelling out Hope and seeing my community come together to fight cancer was such a moving experience. Each year my involvement grew, hospitality committee chair the next year and last year the chair of cancer prevention research committee. Becoming one of the organizers of this year’s relay just seems like a natural progression. As a physician I am frequently treating patients with cancer. Being involved in Relay for Life is my opportunity to help prevent cancer and to work closely with my daughter and my community to fight cancer.
f{tÜÉÇ `vVâÇx When my daughter Megan came to me in the Fall of 2006 and asked me if I wanted to join a mother and daughter team with her friends for Relay For Life I had no idea for the next three years what an impact it would have on both of us. We have had the pleasure of working with so many amazing volunteers all working toward a common goal, raising money to fight cancer. Relay for Life events have given us so many lasting memories from that first Survivor lap back in 2007 to our final lap that June morning this past spring. When our hardworking co-chairs Pam Schwartz and Debbie Picker needed volunteers to chair the event for 2010 I knew I didn’t want to see the event end. Knowing we were doing something to fight back against this disease that seems to effect so many of our loved ones gave us a purpose. Having co-chaired the Survivor Dinner for the past two years I felt I was ready to take on a bigger role in the event to keep the fight going. I decided to join my two team members AnneMarie Gallopoli, and Sheree Givre and new friend Gabrielle Traina, and become a member of the Chairperson Committee for Relay For Life 2010.
ZtuÜ|xÄÄx gÜt|Çt For the past three years flyers would come home with my children about Relay for Life. Each year I would think to myself that I would love to get involved in this great event and also let my children do something good. Well for the first two years, life got in the way and I didn't get involved. Then in April 2008 my sister, Jennifer was diagnosed with brain cancer. On October 18, 2008 I lost my sister and a best friend. From that day on I knew that I needed to get involved. If any amount of money that I raised helped fight this terrible disease and could save one mother, aunt, sister, brother or friend, than that is what I would do. I decided to paint the town purple and sell bows and lapel ribbons to bring attention to this disease that effect so many lives. With the help of a great friend we were able to sell many bows. It was a good feeling to drive down the road and pass a bow on a lamppost or mailbox. My husband Rob and children were excited to get involved. They would help make the bows and deliver them. We felt great that we could do something in memory of a very special person in our lives. We spent the entire day and night at the Relay. It is a day that we will always remember. When I was asked to co-chair this event I was honored and I look forward to working with my wonderful co-chairs. Please take a moment and think about someone you know who has or had cancer and do something special for them, make them your reason to Relay. Come join us for Relay for Life 2010. Together we can make a difference. I look forward to seeing you there.
