HALF HOLLOW HILLS CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT Parent Training Workshop Schedule 2014-15

---------------------------------------------------------------Why Use Visuals? Tuesday, April 14th, 2015, 11:00 am Most often, students with autism are more successful when information is presented visually, especially given auditory processing difficulties commonly found in individuals with autism. Visuals can take almost any form, from labels found in the community that structure the social environment, to a graphic organizer or a task list. Participants will examine learning styles of students with autism, including strengths in visuals and needs in auditory processing. Participants will generate strategies to introduce visuals into their homes.

The New DSM-V Wednesday, April 22nd, 2015, 11:00 am Participants will identify the background and uses of the DSM-5 in order to gain a better understanding of the changes and additions in the new criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about and discuss how the Severity Levels manifest in children and help match students services.

Theory of Mind Wednesday, May 13th, 2015, 10:00 am Participants will identify Theory of Mind as a neurocognitive theory which states that people with autism spectrum disorder have varying degrees of difficulty in recognizing and comprehending the ideas and feelings of others from their outward appearance and behavior. They will analyze how Theory of Mind affects the learning and behavior of students with autism spectrum disorder across the school and daily life environments. Participants will also investigate practical and positive ways to teach and reinforce Theory of Mind skills in learners with autism spectrum disorder of all ages and skill levels.

Safety & Community Skills Friday, May, 22nd, 2015, 11:00 am Planning and practice are important components to safe and successful outings in the community. This training will assist parents in identifying safety skills that need to be taught as well as how to plan and navigate various community trips.

The Hidden Curriculum and ASD June 10th, 2015, 11:00 am The Hidden Curriculum, developed by Brenda Smith Myles, refers to the social rules or guidelines that are assumed to be known and therefore not directly taught. Students with autism often have difficulty learning areas of The Hidden Curriculum across school, home and community. Participants will identify the concept of The Hidden Curriculum and provide examples found in the home, school and community. Participants will examine strategies for teaching and reinforcing Hidden Curriculum skills.

Siblings and Family Thursday, June 18th, 2015, 11:00 am Families of children on the spectrum have stressors that other families do not have. Often, siblings have to begin early on coping with these stressors and as the grow, their concerns change as well. Grandparents can be a positive influence in the family but may need to develop and understanding of the disability and how to support their children and grandchildren. Participants will discuss and plan strategies to support the needs of siblings. Participants will generate strategies for identified family needs.
