HALF HOLLOW HILLS CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT Parent Training Workshop Schedule 2013-14

---------------------------------------------------------------Tuesday, April22, 2014 11:00 am Using Special Interests Presenter: Erin Kincaid Often, individuals with autism demonstrate a special interest in objects, topics, facts, repetitive patterns of speech or routines that may have an impact on their ability to participate in academic, social and employment opportunities. Special interests, when shaped and supported appropriately, may lead to hobbies, improved school performance and pathways to appropriate work in the adult world. Participants will identify the criteria for, “highly restricted, fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity or focus (DSM-5) and apply this understanding to behavior, school and social areas. Participants will analyze the differences between calming and stress-inducing interests. Thursday, May 8, 2014 11:00 am Why Use Visuals? Presenter: Dawn Puleo Most often, students with autism are more successful when information is presented visually, especially given auditory processing difficulties commonly found in individuals with autism. Visuals can take almost any form, from labels found in the community that structure the social environment, to a graphic organizer or a task list. Participants will examine learning styles of students with autism, including strengths in visuals and needs in auditory processing. Participants will generate strategies to introduce visuals into their homes. . Friday, May 23, 2014, 11:00 am Siblings and Family Presenter: Lisa Davi Families of children on the spectrum have stressors that other families do not have. Often, siblings have to begin early on coping with these stressors and as the grow, their concerns change as well. Grandparents can be a positive influence in the family but may need to develop and understanding of the disability and how to support their children and grandchildren. Participants will discuss and plan strategies to support the needs of siblings. Participants will generate strategies for identified family needs.

Wednesday June 4, 2014, 11:00 am Adaptive Daily Living Skills Presenter: Erin Kincaid This training will provide participants with relevant skills for children to learn based on their age in order to improve quality of life and independence. Participants will learn how to incorporate teaching independent skills into daily life at home. Strategies and prompting will be reviewed. Participants will have the opportunity to develop a teaching program for their child with guidance. Wednesday, June 18, 2014, 11:00 am Activity Schedules Presenter: Lisa Davi Activity schedules can be a useful tool for children with autism during many different activities, from planning leisure time to completing the morning routine and scheduling a trip into the community. This training will provide participants with strategies for making and using schedules for children with varying needs and abilities. Strategies from the task analysis, visual support and prompting trainings will be incorporated into this training.
