HALF HOLLOW HILLS CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT Parent Training Workshop Schedule 2017-18
---------------------------------------------------------------OPWDD Workshop
Time & Location to TBD This workshop will provide valuable information for families regarding OPWDD services. The New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) is responsible for coordinating services for more than 130,000 New Yorkers with developmental disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, and other neurological impairments. It provides services directly and through a network of approximately 700 nonprofit service providing agencies. Supports and services, which include Medicaid funded long-term care services such as habilitation and clinical services, as well as residential supports and services, are primarily provided in community settings across the state. In addition to these Medicaid services, OPWDD also provides New York State-funded family support services, which are designed to assist families in providing care for their loved ones who live full-time in their family home, and employment supports, which include ongoing job coaching, job matching, and vocational training. *Information provided from https://opwdd.ny.gov/
Transition to the New Year March 15, 2018 at 9:00 am Students with autism benefit from planning and preparation for the transition to a new school year given difficulties with changes in routine and schedule associated with the diagnosis. Participants will identify factors that make transitions difficult for students with autism. Participants will discuss preparations for the new school year and will match transition supports to the needs of their child. Specific information regarding the transition to middle school and high school will also be shared.
Safety & Community Skills Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at 9:00 am Planning and practice are important components to safe and successful outings in the community. This training will assist parents in identifying safety skills that need to be taught as well as how to plan and navigate various community trips.

---------------------------------------------------------------Cyber Safety and ASD Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at 9:00am
Participants will look at digital technology to identify its purposes and help students to discriminate between private and personal information. Participants will examine factors to create and individualized set of technology related rules for their children. Online and video resources will be shared to allow participants to learn more about cyber safety as well as positive uses for digital technology. The Hidden Curriculum and ASD Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 10:00am The Hidden Curriculum, developed by Brenda Smith Myles, refers to the social rules or guidelines that are assumed to be known and therefore not directly taught. Students with autism often have difficulty learning areas of The Hidden Curriculum across school, home and community. Participants will identify the concept of The Hidden Curriculum and provide examples found in the home, school and community. Participants will examine strategies for teaching and reinforcing Hidden Curriculum skills.
Why Use Visuals? Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 9:00am Most often, students with autism are more successful when information is presented visually, especially given auditory processing difficulties commonly found in individuals with autism. Visuals can take almost any form, from labels found in the community that structure the social environment, to a graphic organizer or a task list. Participants will examine learning styles of students with autism, including strengths in visuals and needs in auditory processing. Participants will generate strategies to introduce visuals into their homes.
Summer Fun Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 9:00am Summer brings plenty of opportunities for social outings, trips to the community and time with family and friends. Being well-prepared for these events will help to ensure a safe, successful and enjoyable experience for children on the spectrum. Participants will learn how to plan for various events from short play dates to a trip on an airplane.
