---------------------------------------------------------------Theory of Mind November 22, 2017 9:00 am
Participants will identify Theory of Mind as a neurocognitive theory which states that people with autism spectrum disorder have varying degrees of difficulty in recognizing and comprehending the ideas and feelings of others from their outward appearance and behavior. They will analyze how Theory of Mind affects the learning and behavior of students with autism spectrum disorder across the school and daily life environments. Participants will also investigate practical and positive ways to teach and reinforce Theory of Mind skills in learners with autism spectrum disorder of all ages and skill levels.
Social Skills & Social Stories Tuesday, November 28, 2017 10:00 am Social interactions are often an area of focus for children on the spectrum. Language skills and social intent play a role in the development of this skill. This training focuses on strategies to develop the skills needed to successfully interact with other at school, home and community.
Siblings and Family Tuesday, December 5, 2017, 10:00 am Families of children on the spectrum have stressors that other families do not have. Often, siblings have to begin early on coping with these stressors and as they grow, their concerns change as well. Grandparents can be a positive influence in the family but may need to develop and understanding of the disability and how to support their children and grandchildren. Participants will discuss and plan strategies to support the needs of siblings. Participants will generate strategies for identified family needs.
Be Sensory Smart Tuesday, December 19, 2017 10:00 am For the first time, the DSM-5 has included a sensory component in its descriptors for the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. This training will address sensory issues as it relates to students with autism. Participants will learn about the sensory systems and basic principles of sensory processing. Participants will analyze the benefits of addressing sensory needs for their own children and come up with sensory activities appropriate for their child based on information gained during the training.

---------------------------------------------------------------Anger Management Tuesday, January 9, 2018 9:00 am Often times, children with disabilities have a difficult time identifying their emotions and controlling their impulses. This workshop will provide the participants with information on how to teach their child to identify and regulate their emotions. We will review proactive impulse control strategies and parents will learn how to identify appropriate strategies for their child.
Effective Prompting Strategies Tuesday, January 23, 2018, 9:30 am This training will provide participants with strategies needed to select, implement and fade appropriate prompts for students with autism across various settings and behaviors. Participants will learn to identify types of prompts, differentiate levels of prompting and identifying a plan for fading a prompt.
Activity Schedules Tuesday, February 13, 2018 9:30 am Activity schedules can be a useful tool for children with autism during many different activities, from planning leisure time to completing the morning routine and scheduling a trip into the community. This training will provide participants with strategies for making and using schedules for children with varying needs and abilities. Strategies from the task analysis, visual support and prompting trainings will be incorporated into this training.
OPWDD Workshop Date, Time & Location TBD This workshop will provide valuable information for families regarding OPWDD services. The New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) is responsible for coordinating services for more than 130,000 New Yorkers with developmental disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, and other neurological impairments. It provides services directly and through a network of approximately 700 nonprofit service providing agencies. Supports and services, which include Medicaid funded long-term care services such as habilitation and clinical services, as well as residential supports and services, are primarily provided in community settings across the state. In addition to these Medicaid services, OPWDD also provides New York State-funded family support services, which are designed to assist families in providing care for their loved ones who
live full-time in their family home, and employment supports, which include ongoing job coaching, job matching, and vocational training. Parent Training Workshop Schedule
