Participants will learn to incorporate visuals and other such strategies that will set positive homework practices and assist children in becoming more independent.

Visual Supports and Activity Schedules October 27, 2016 9:00 am Students with autism are more successful when information is presented visually, especially given auditory processing difficulties commonly found in individuals with autism. Visuals can take almost any form, from labels found in the community that structure the social environment, to a graphic organizer or a task list. Activity schedules can be a useful visual tool for children with autism during many different activities, from planning leisure time to completing the morning routine and scheduling a trip into the community. Participants will generate strategies to introduce visuals into their homes.

Social Stories November 18, 2016 10:00 am Social interactions are often an area of focus for children on the spectrum. Language skills and social intent play a role in the development of this skill. The Hidden Curriculum and ASD November 22, 2016 9:00 am The Hidden Curriculum, developed by Brenda Smith Myles, refers to the social rules or guidelines that are assumed to be known and therefore not directly taught. Finally, participants will plan elements of usual family routines that can be extended through the holidays.

Anger Management January 11, 2017 10:00 am Often times, children with disabilities have a difficult time identifying their emotions and controlling their impulses. This workshop will provide the participants with information on how to teach their child to identify and regulate their emotions. We will review proactive impulse control strategies and parents will learn how to identify appropriate strategies for their child.

Theory of Mind January 25, 2017 10:00 am Participants will identify Theory of Mind as a neurocognitive theory which states that people with autism spectrum disorder have varying degrees of difficulty in recognizing and comprehending the ideas and feelings of others from their outward appearance and behavior. They will analyze how Theory of Mind affects the learning and behavior of students with autism spectrum disorder across the school and daily life environments. Participants will also investigate practical and positive ways to teach and reinforce Theory of Mind skills in learners with autism spectrum disorder of all ages and skill levels.

College and Career Fair February 7, 2017 Time TBD This evening fair will provide for parents access to information about options beyond high school. Parents will have an opportunity to learn about college programs and career options for their children directly from local schools and agencies.

This training will address sensory issues as it relates to students with autism. Participants will learn about the sensory systems and basic principles of sensory processing.
