HALF HOLLOW HILLS CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT Parent Training Workshop Schedule 2015-16
Theory of Mind January 22, 2016 11:00 am Participants will identify Theory of Mind as a neurocognitive theory which states that people with autism spectrum disorder have varying degrees of difficulty in recognizing and comprehending the ideas and feelings of others from their outward appearance and behavior. They will analyze how Theory of Mind affects the learning and behavior of students with autism spectrum disorder across the school and daily life environments. Participants will also investigate practical and positive ways to teach and reinforce Theory of Mind skills in learners with autism spectrum disorder of all ages and skill levels.
The Hidden Curriculum and ASD February 9, 2016 11:00 am
The Hidden Curriculum, developed by Brenda Smith Myles, refers to the social rules or guidelines that are assumed to be known and therefore not directly taught. Students with autism often have difficulty learning areas of The Hidden Curriculum across school, home and community. Participants will identify the concept of The Hidden Curriculum and provide examples found in the home, school and community. Participants will examine strategies for teaching and reinforcing Hidden Curriculum skills.
Task Analysis & Activity Schedules February 26, 2016 11:00 am Using a task analysis to break down the sequence of steps in a task or activity assists in teaching students how to complete a variety of tasks accurately and independently. Activity schedules can be a useful tool for children with autism during many different activities, from planning leisure time to completing the morning routine, and scheduling a trip into the community. This training will provide participants with strategies for making and using schedules for children with varying needs and abilities. Strategies from the task analysis, visual support and prompting trainings will be incorporated in this training.
