Programs K-12 will be covered as well as explanations of related service models. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about programs and services during a question and answer period. How to Protect Your Child Legally and Financially Tuesday, October 23, 2018 7:30PM Presenters: Andrew Cohen, Esq., Mitch Weisbrot CLU, ChSNC Organized by: Elaine Bova This is an informative seminar that addresses the legal and financial preparations crucial to safeguarding assets and benefits for your child with special needs. Andrew and Mitch are fathers of children with disabilities. Their personal experience and professional expertise enable them to help other parents navigate the confusing and emotional aspects of estate planning to best serve the interests of each child throughout his or her lifetime. Conducting a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) Monday, November 5, 2018 10:00 am This two-part training will take participants through the process of Functional Assessment and Behavior Plan development step-by-step. During Part I, participants will learn what Functional Behavior Assessment is as well as activities used during this process to identify the functions of a behavior as well as influencing factors. Components of a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) Thursday, November 29, 2018 10:00 am The second of this two-part training, will extend the information learned during the training on Functional Behavior Assessment to learn how to develop appropriate interventions. Participants will learn to identify the parts of a behavior plan and select appropriate interventions for behaviors based on function.
Visual Supports & Activity Schedules Tuesday, December 18, 2018 10:00 am Students with autism are more successful when information is presented visually, especially given auditory processing difficulties commonly found in individuals with autism. Visuals can take almost any form, from labels found in the community that structure the social environment, to a graphic organizer or a task list. Activity schedules can be a useful visual tool for children with autism during many different activities, from planning leisure time to completing the morning routine and scheduling a trip into the community. Participants will generate strategies to introduce visuals into their homes. Community Skill Building Friday, January 11, 2019 10:00 am This presentation will provide parents with goals to enhance building skills within the community. These goals will include Safely Navigating around the community, Stranger and Safety Awareness, Shopping Skills, Daily Living Skills and Banking Skills. Social Stories Tuesday, January 29, 2019 10:00 am Social interactions are often an area of focus for children on the spectrum. Language skills and social intent play a role in the development of this skill. This training focuses on strategies to develop the skills needed to successfully interact with other at school, home and community. Participants will have the opportunity to view sample social stories and identify components needed to generate a social story for their children.
Cyber Safety and ASD Friday, February 8, 2019 9:00 am Participants will look at digital technology to identify its purposes and help students to discriminate between private and personal information. Participants will examine factors to create and individualized set of technology related rules for their children. Online and video resources will be shared to allow participants to learn more about cyber safety as well as positive uses for digital technology.
