Information literacy, the ability to find, analyze, manage, present and share information as well as the ability to adapt rapidly to the changes brought about by the availability of information, is a critical skill for 21st century citizens. Students need to become skilled in the use of the range of technology resources they will encounter. These skills will not come from special computer classes or from drill and practice computer use, but through the full integration of technology in their education. As 21st-century jobs become increasingly information based, workers need to: • use multimedia tools to communicate and present ideas and concepts orally and in writing • separate the important, relevant information from the vast mountain of information available • quickly learn specialized information in an ongoing fashion • work effectively in physical and virtual groups The District’s philosophy of integrating technology into the instructional program reflects these issues. Half Hollow Hills’ Professional Development courses aim to support staff members in becoming efficient users and integrators of technology within their classrooms.
Exploring the Virtual Reference Collection 5 hour PDP Location: HS East Old Mac Lab/Library Date: June 24 Time: 8 AM to 1 PM Instructor: Donna Miceli and Linda Lennon Course Description: Become proficient in accessing newspapers, periodicals and databases online utilizing the new Virtual Reference Collection available on our school library media pages. Learn how students can use these resources to write research papers, create bibliographies and avoid plagiarism. Gain access to E-Prep, an online SAT prep program, to use in your classroom. Photo Ops for Educators 1 7.5 hour PDP Location: West Hollow Mac Lab 1 Date: June 24 and 25 Time: 9:15 AM to 1 PM Instructor: Bea Reiser Course Description: With the use of digital photography, you can promote your class’ activities, highlight their work, publicize their creativity, create display cases, bulletin boards, and spruce up your eBoard. You will learn to add visuals to your Comic Life, PowerPoint, Keynote, Word and Pages documents. By creating slideshows quickly and easily for back to school night or for your classes your professionalism will show through. All of the things are easily transferred to your students. Come and see how talented you can become! Learning A to Z (All K-5 Teachers and Middle School Special Ed) 10 hour PDP Location: Signal Hill Library Date: June 24 and 25 Time: 9:00 AM to 2 PM Instructor: Danielle Reed Course Description: This is a wonderful online resource to support the language arts and science curriculum. Reading A to Z encourages independent and guided reading at all levels. This website offers lesson plans, leveled books, and developmentally appropriate comprehension & phonics worksheets. RazKids provides access to hundreds of animated leveled books – ideal for emerging and challenged readers. This site offers interactive audio books and quizzes for students to utilize at school and at home. Vocabulary A to Z and Science A to Z also promote interactive learning and resources for students at teachers that correlate to curriculum guidelines. Participants will be given time to build rosters, assign books and learn how to track student reading activities.
Pinterest 5 hour PDP Location: Signal Hill Library Date: June 26 Time: 9:00 AM to 2 PM Instructor: Danielle Reed Course Description: This course will introduce teachers to Pinterest.com and provide a brief overview of the site. Teachers will be able to set up accounts, follow educationally appropriate connections, and develop boards related to education, teaching, and common core standards. Teachers will also explore how to search, download, and modify resources to meet the needs of their students and classroom. Finally, teachers will learn how to pin ideas, upload documents, and share resources with others. Photo Ops for Educators 2 *Prerequisite 7.5 hour PDP Location: West Hollow Mac Lab 1 Date: June 26 and 27 Time: 9:15 AM to 1 PM Instructor: Bea Reiser Course Description: Utilizing advanced techniques of digital photography, you will be able to transfer more technical skills to your students. You will learn to create a slideshow on your Dell computer and on the Apple Mac’s. Professional style documents on the Mac’s will be created and then presented on the Dell computer. Programs will include: iPhoto, Comic Life, Pages, Word, PowerPoint, Keynote and iDVD. You will also learn how to store your documents on an external drive for future use. *Prerequisite: Photo Op for Educators 1 iOrganize = iSaveTime 5 hour PDP Location: Signal Hill Library Date: June 27 Time: 9:00 AM to 2 PM Instructor: Danielle Reed Course Description: Are your files a mess? After a full year of teaching, do you need to reset and reorganize all the new ideas, lessons and documentation? Do you always forget your favorite websites? Learn how to organize your files into folders and how to easily search for them. Discover the tips and tricks to navigating Microsoft Word. Save time and frustration by learning quick ways to format and convert documents using Zamzar.com. Set up Dropbox to easily share documents with colleagues or between computers. Bookmark and sort your frequently used websites. Bring your questions - any problem or issue will be addressed! We will also be looking at district subscription resources for support and ideas for next year.
SMART Board Level 1 15 hour PDP Location: Fran Greenspan Admin Center (CO) Rm 211 Date: July 8, 9 and 10 Time: 2 PM to 7 PM Instructor: Jolynn Sapia Course Description: From the beginner to the novice, learn how to navigate through the basics of SMART Board, create your own files, find resources to avail yourself of, and begin to integrate this tool into your existing curriculum SMART Board II *Prerequisite 15 hour PDP Location: Fran Greenspan Admin Center (CO) Rm 211 Date: July 15, 16 and 17 Time: 2 PM to 7 PM Instructor: Jolynn Sapia Course Description: Take it to the next level… take everything you learned in SMART Board Level 1, and take it to the next level… learn cool tips and tricks, how to master the Lesson Activity Toolkit and create exemplar lessons. *Prerequisite: SMART Board 1 The Google Suite 15 hour PDP Location: HS East New Mac Lab Date: July 15, 16 and 17 Time: 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM Instructor: Patrick Kiley-Rendon Course Description: Even though Google completes 112 million searches a day, few educators utilize the dozens of other Google applications. Many of these apps can facilitate learning and create new, novel lessons that will engage students. We will discuss the merits and uses of Docs, Forms, Voice, Scholar, Calendar, and other functions. You’ll even learn how to search more efficiently (and teach your students that searching is more complicated than clicking on the first result). Participants will leave with projects that they begin using in the classroom. “Make and Take” Comic Life 7.5 hour PDP Location: West Hollow Mac Lab 1 Date: July 17 Time: 9 AM – 4:30 PM Instructor: Ilana Sussman Course Description: Teachers will learn the in’s and out’s of the computer program Comic Life. We will share ideas in order to create projects, activities, banners, signs and more. Teachers will create projects and/or activities for a unit of study that they will take with them for the upcoming school year.
Google Lit Trips 5 hour PDP Location: HS East New Mac Lab Date: July 17 Time: 8 AM – 1 PM Instructor: Michelle Jacobs Course Description: Google Lit Trips will allow educators to take a virtual journey and bring literature to life. Google Lit Trips interfaces with Google Earth to create a literary map that plots a virtual course of the life and events of a character in literary works. Teachers can provide their students with a visual support and hands on interaction while combining history, geography, and literature. In this course, educators will explore shared Google Lit Trips and learn the basic skills to create their own Google Lit virtual tour. No SMARTBoard…No Problem 7.5 hour PDP Location: West Hollow Mac Lab 1 Date: July 18 Time: 9 AM – 4:30 PM Instructor: Ilana Sussman Course Description: Teachers will learn programs we all have on our computers, such as SMART Notebook, Board Tools and many others that they can use with JUST a projector. We will share ideas in order to create projects, presentations, and more. Teachers will create projects and/or activities for units of study that they will be able to use for the school year. Using Infographics for Instruction and Assessment 10 hour PDP Location: HS East New Mac Lab Date: July 18 and 19 Time: 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM Instructor: Patrick Kiley-Rendon Course Description: Infographics are the graphical representations of data, facts, statistics, etc. They have been around for decades -- subway maps, USA Today polls, Electoral College breakdowns -- but they have recently experienced a tremendous surge in their presence on the Web. When designed correctly, they draw a viewer’s attention and quickly convey a message. Participants in the class will learn about the aesthetic and artistic decisions that go into infographics, sites that teachers and students can use to create them, and sites that provide infographics that can supplement curricula. These can be used as teaching tools and as assessments.

We will share ideas in order to create projects, presentations, and more. Teachers will create projects and/or activities for a unit of study that they will be able to use with them for the school year. Teachers will become well-versed in the pre-assessments, creating content tailored to these assessments, and then using post-tests to evaluate the skills created for each student. The iPossibilities are Endless 15 hour PDP Location: Vanderbilt Library Date: July 30, 31 and August 1 Time: 9 AM – 2 PM Instructor: Katherine Homenides and Ilana Sussman Course Description: Having an iPad in the classroom is both a motivational tool and an invaluable resource. This course will show teachers how to maximize the use of their iPad while exploring new and exciting apps to use with their class. We will demonstrate different ways to use the iPad with the whole class, small groups or individually. Teachers will find apps to enhance their curricula and create projects, lessons and/or plans using these apps.

Creating Student Websites and QR Codes 15 hour PDP Location: Vanderbilt Library Date: August 13, 14 and 15 Time: 9 AM – 2 PM Instructor: Katherine Homenides/Colleen Friel Course Description: Using technology to publish and share student work is not only exciting but motivating as well. In this course teachers will learn how to create a website through Weebly.com. They will set up student accounts so that their students can create their own websites. Teachers will create a unit lesson incorporating Weebly websites and QR codes for their students. They will learn to create QR codes and link them to both voice tracks and website links.
QR Codes in Education 15 Hour PDP Location: HS East Art Lab Room 553 Date: November 5, 12, 19 and 26 Time: 3:45 PM to 7:30 PM Instructor: Allyson Uttendorfer Course Description: To create a lesson or unit utilizing 21st century learning skills - QR codes and other editing software will be explored. QR is the trademark for a type of matrix barcode. This code takes you to a site on the internet, typically where more information is provided. These are used by businesses and are featured on packages, advertisements and posters. Teachers can use these codes to connect to the internet, organize a scavenger hunt, provide in depth explanations, or videos and more.
