Rounders

The rounders season has got off to a great start with all teams currently undefeated. The Year 8 girls' rounders team won the Huddersfield Tournament, winning all five matches and beating Kirkburton in the final 10-7. It was a great performance by the girls, who demonstrated outstanding motivation, team work and determination. We wish all teams good luck in their upcoming fixtures and tournaments. A big thank you must also go to the Year 10 Sports Prefects; Ella Gill, Tilly Seeley and Kate Marshall, for their commitment and leadership.

Inter-form

Miss R Burn

The recent inter-form competition of Dodgeball for Year 7, 8 & 9 has been incredibly successful and all pupils must be commended for their effort, sportsmanship and enthusiasm. For a week and a half, the Year 10 Sports Prefects have helped to organised and umpire the inter-form competition, helping each form to gain points and move up the Interform League table. Look out for the updated notice board to see where your form are!

It was fantastic to see so many pupils taking part in this event, some of whom rarely participate in extra-curricular competitions. Forms were working together, showing an inclusive and supportive manner. The sportsmanship and fair play that was demonstrated by all year groups was second to none and all students should be commended on their attitude. The atmosphere was simply buzzing with the rest of the year coming to support and cheer on their friends.

With the support of the parents behind them, and their determination to succeed, I am delighted to say that the girls have now reached the National Championship finals, and they are now one of the top sixteen teams in the country. I would like to thank the parents for their continued support and commitment to school tennis. The five girls, who range from 12 – 15 years old, will represent Holmfirth High School in Sheffield, from 9 – 12 July, in the National Finals. We wish them the best of luck and know they will be a real asset to the school. Miss R Burn

CRICKET

Once again the school cricket teams have performed exceptionally well in all competitions and have played in fantastic cricketing spirit. YEAR 7s

YEAR 11 RUGBY

The U15 girls team, consisting of Holly Horsfall, Chloe and Ellie Chawner, Bronte Murgett and Emily Young have this year, taken part in the National Championship competition. This is an open age event in which our team is one of the youngest, playing against 18 year olds. They played matches consisting of two sets, singles and doubles, against Giggleswick School, Woodhouse Grove and Hymers College. They won all three of these, taking them to the Regional Finals against Lymm Grammar School. On paper, we were the underdogs playing an older; more experienced and higher rated team. I was exceptionally proud of the girls, who played some superb tennis and gave their all for every point. We won three out of the four singles and both the doubles. An absolutely brilliant day of tennis!

In their first year of cricket at Holmfirth High School, the Year 7s have performed very well, superbly led by captain and Yorkshire starlet James Wharton, they progressed to the county area final which unfortunately they were narrowly beaten in. However, along the way there has been some fantastic performances both with the ball and the bat but most noticeably has to be Daniel Parr's 99 runs against Castle Hall. This team has huge potential and it's hoped they can continued to progress next season.

YEAR 8s

On Thursday 23 May the Year 11 rugby team took on St John Fisher's from Dewsbury in the Kirklees cup final held at the Fartown ground. The team put in a superb effort and played their best ever performance to finish off their school rugby career. The score finished 16-8 – well done to the whole team!! Mr J Battye

The tennis season for the U15 boys, U13 boys and U13 girls is due to start at the end of June with matches against Crossley Heath and Brooksbank in the Aegon School Tennis Championships. We wish these pupils the best of luck and hope they are able to progress through to the next round of the tournament.

The Year 8 cricket team have had a mixed season of results but at the time of writing these notes are still in a position to win the Huddersfield Schools Division 1 with 2

Athletics

Following on from the success of the cross country and Indoor Athletics, the outdoor season has started extremely well for all of our athletes.

Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils were involved in the Kirklees Super 8 competition at Leeds Road, with the combined team of 8s and 9s winning and are now through to the West Yorkshire School Games finals on the 2 July at Leeds Metropolitan University. The Year 7 combined team also won the Super 8 competition. In the English Schools competition all four teams; the Junior Boys and Girls, intermediate Girls and Boys qualified for the B final. The Intermediate boys finished in first place and the Junior boys finished fifth. Both the Intermediate girls and the Junior girls finished in a very respectable second place. Two of our athletes were selected for Kirklees Schools Athletics to compete in the West Yorkshire School Championships, which took place on Saturday 8 June at Cleckheaton- Issac Shepherd (400m) Aiden Harvey-Franklin (Javelin). The Year 9s were involved in the Kirklees Cup, with the boys finishing a very respectable sixth and the girls' team finishing in second overall. All other three year groups are taking part in their Kirklees Cup over the next month and hopefully will do very well. All in all, another excellent season for the athletics teams. Well done to all those who have participated. Mrs V Wormald and Mr S Widdall

National School Sports Week

Leadership Courses This term during National School Sports Week (24 June – 28 June) we offered our Year 9 students an exciting opportunity to gain leadership qualifications in five different sports and we were delighted that nearly 100 students took up this offer. These were delivered by the National Governing Bodies of Football, Rugby, Athletics, Rounders and Cricket and gave the students a better understanding of technical aspects of the game, leadership and coaching skills, officiating and potential pathways to develop further. In addition to this they will now be able to apply to become sports prefects and use their new skills in helping younger students in the next academic year. Well done to all those who took part. Mr R Blezard

Football

The Year 10 boys football team had yet another outstanding season.

Following on from their successes in Years 7, 8 and 9, they finished this season by completing the double - the third time in four years that they have won the Huddersfield Cup and League. This means they have now gone four years without defeat in the Huddersfield League, which is an incredible achievement! The league was won with nine straight wins and the cup with an impressive victory over Shelley. This sets up next season where the team will be hoping to go five years undefeated in the league and a cup final at The John Smith Stadium, as well as a good run in the County Cup, (which was won in Year 8).

n! A brilliant seaso

YEAR 10s

Off the back of three very successful years of cricket at Holmfirth High School the Year 10s have attacked their final season of school cricket with full force competing in three competitions they are yet to be beaten. They have reached the Huddersfield Cup Final once again and, in addition, to this have reached the Yorkshire 20/20 semi-finals having beaten QEGS in the area final. They have been some excellent performances so far throughout the season but credit has to be paid to the captain Tom Mighall who has once again lead the team fantastically well.

U13s – SUPER 8's

games still to play. This year has also seem some new players join the side which has demonstrated that strength of talent in this year group and is a good sign for future years.

Super 8s is an 8-a-side modified version of cricket - the Holmfirth side is made up of a mixture of Year 7 & 8 students and captained by Kieran Taylor. This team have progressed through to the Northern National Finals after an exhilarating Yorkshire qualifying round in Barnsley. Having won through to the final quite comfortably they had a tough game vs Darton Academy. Holmfirth needed 7 to win off the last two balls which Shaun Dawson managed to hit to send his team mates into wild celebrations. They will now compete at York CC against Nottinghamshire, Durham and Lancashire. Mr Blezard & Mr Battye Holmfirth High School 19
