To Our Dear and Valued Member,
Welcome to another action-packed school year! We hope that you had enough energy to attend this first meeting and to pick up this issue of the Homestead Horizon. Amazing summer? Talk to us about it. As your reporter, I invite you to browse through this year’s first Horizon. Included are introductions to this year’s projects (AE, CS, and PwB) and to this year’s incredible and somewhat unusual officer team. Check it out. It might perk up your day. Thoughts? Contribute an article. Share your past experiences in FBLA or even your curiousity as you first walked into one of our meetings. You are always welcome to contribute your own articles, poems, games, or other written creations. You don’t even have to present a name; we’ll keep you Anonymous if desired. But if you do, you’ll be glorified and worshiped by every member of the officer team. Maybe. Activity points are always a nice bonus. And to our members, old and new, thanks for joining and supporting us, we wish for you the best. There will be some stress, there will be competition. But in the end, the experiences you gain from all of this, the people you will meet and never forget-that’s what really matters. Cheers,
Gary Wan Reporter

Letter from the President Dear Members,
Welcome to the Future Business Leaders of America Club! I’m excited to lead you in another year of rewarding competition, thrilling projects, and legendary conferences!
Homestead FBLA is dedicated to providing you with unparalleled opportunities to gain realworld business, technology and leadership skills. Whether it’s through competitions and conferences, projects, or community service events and socials, we offer numerous chances for you to meet fun, passionate, and motivated people.
I have some specific goals for the upcoming year. First, we plan to increase educational opportunities outside of competitions through relevant workshops in technology, public speaking, and business. Second, we will increase technology oriented opportunities through the expansion of the Technology Committee. You are welcome to join regardless of ability, and your work will be implemented on our website. I also see FBLA assuming an even greater leadership role on campus than ever before. Thus, we plan to participate in a number of school-service activities in addition to events out in the wider community. Finally, I’d like every member to become an active member! We’ll do this by showing you where your passions lie in FBLA—whether it’s in the people, community service, technology, business, public speaking, competition, or the travel opportunities. I’ve personally found FBLA to be one of the defining experiences of my high school career. I’ve benefited immensely not only from the business learning but from the friendships I’ve formed. Regardless of how much or how little time you choose to invest in FBLA, it will be a rewarding experience. If you’re already hooked on FBLA, I look forward to working with you this year and I hope you explore a little more of this amazing club. If you’re not, come out to our next few meetings and learn a little more about the club. This is an amazing experience you don’t want to pass up! In the following pages, you’ll see Officer Profiles with some fun facts about our officers. We have an extraordinary officer team this year. (So stop by and meet them!) You’ll also find descriptions of our three year-long chapter projects. If you have any questions about anything, don’t hesitate to talk to us around campus or come to A207 and ask. Enjoy! Sincerely,
Kathy Sun President

Project Blurbs Proiect
Partnership with Business (PwB) by Evanny Huang and Jasmine Stoy, PwB Chairs
At Homestead FBLA, the opportunities are never ending and always changing; the Partnership with Business Project is no exception. The PwB Project provides its members with amazing opportunities to use the skills that they develop in a classroom setting and apply them to the real business enterprise. PwB gives you the chance to expand your social network, experience professional scenarios, and is the first step to achieving the career you’ve always wanted. This year we could be working with a wireless headset that can read your brainwaves and move objects on your screen or bettering your marketing adeptness with a creative, web-based promotional company! Each year we research many companies in search for the most beneficial and fulfilling mutual partnership. In previous years, we’ve teamed up with an up and coming wrestler, an international clothing company, and an environmental transportation initiative. Members were able to participate in a wide range of fun activities from partaking in an original fashion show to traveling to San Francisco to visit the International Auto-show. The project caters to a variety of members’ skill sets, whether it be marketing a product, organizing a presentation, creating advertisements, or graphic design. By joining PwB, you are sure to get the most out of your time, for this year’s project will prove to be phenomenal as well! Opportunities are definitely abundant in FBLA, but it is up to you to grab a hold of them. Don’t miss this great chance to amplify your proficiency in so many fields like public speaking, leadership, and technology, that not only will help you in school now, but also with future jobs and associations. Not only will you get a head start on learning the major principles in business, you will make tons of new friends and bond even more with your current ones. The Partnership with Business Project is a great way in strengthening your communication skills and well as your experience and knowledge as a future business leader. Make sure to be there as we announce more specifics about this project later on! We hope to see you at our first meeting!

Community Service Project (CS) by Sonia Koroleva and Ella Pravetz, CS Chairs
Every year the Community Service Project decides to help a certain organization, foundation or company, in order to help better the community. In the past years, CS has worked with McClellan Ranch Park, Sunnyvale Public Library, and Strive for College, raising money and in the case of McClellan Ranch Park, restoring and improving it greatly. The goal is to impact the community in a positive way by really making a change in some aspect of life. CS has many goals this year. We want members to have a chance to have a hands-on experience working for the community, to actually make a difference, and to be proud of the fact that they themselves worked hard and actually got something out of it. Even though fundraising is very important to CS, we also want members to actually work with the organization and help people in the community. Community service is one of the kindest things that a person can do, and for an FBLA member, the Community Service Project is a great way to be involved with the community, the school, and FBLA. By joining CS, expect to meet many new people, have lots of fun, participate in a variety of different events, but most of all, make a difference in the community! Although this is not yet confirmed, this year we hope to work with Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital to raise awareness about cancer and to make a difference in the lives of children battling cancer. More information will be out in the following weeks, including the date of the first CS meeting. We look forward to seeing you there. Come join us and be proud of doing good for your community!
American Enterprise (AE) by Jessica Yi and Evelyn Siu, AE Chairs
Every year, the American Enterprise project finds different ways to teach the community about the American Enterprise system. In the previous years, American Enterprise has taught at Cupertino Middle School and established Tomorrow’s Business Leaders of America (TBLA). Last year, we reached out to the non-profit organizations in the community to teach finance and management. This year, we are shifting gears and focusing on career planning. Career planning is an essential step to success, and the time to start is now. Throughout the year, you will learn from professionals and share ideas with one another. With that information, we will be holding a series of three workshops at the Sunnyvale Library to teach career planning to the community. Along the way, you will practice public speaking skills as well as learn teamwork and crucial business skills. How do you become a CEO? How do you make it to the top? Come join the American Enterprise project and find out!

The night started off with the thrill of going on stage for our competitions (with Homestead doing extremely well!) and the feeling of pride for our school and the competitors. When we got back to our rooms, however, the real fun began. Clandestine sleepovers were planned, with a bunch of people piling into a room to watch movies or to just talk and bond. I remember coming back to my room at 3:30 am after watching a movie and seeing 12 people piled on one bed, looking straight at me as if they knew I was coming!
