Whether all in good fun or going too far, senior pranks leave lasting memories on both their class and school. “I think every senior class should do a prank. It’s tradition,” senior Steven McCann said. In the spring of 2004, Adam Burton, a student of teacher Jennifer Hilley’s felt compelled to do a senior prank. For about a week, he wrote on her board “Thursday is a great day for sailing.” “It appeared repeatedly. He even sent me an e-mail with the message. So Thursday came, and Adam wasn’t in class. I thought he skipped school because it was his birthday,” Hilley said. She heard a commotion in the hallway. Pushed by students, an eight-foot long pirate ship rolled in through the door. hining above the rest of the senior class, the Class of 2009’s valedictorians have gone above the call of duty and achieved academic perfection. With 4.0 unweighted GPAs and loaded schedules of Advanced Placement and honors classes, the valedictorians have been working towards this honor since their freshman year. There are 10 valedictorians with one salutatorian. As a reward for their accomplishment, they will each be given two to three minutes to speak at graduation. Jennifer Mahler, with the highest weighted GPA, is the number one valedictorian. Leading the campus in all areas from cheerleading to the Math Center, these individuals have left their legacy in numerous ways. Their contributions will have a lasting effect on the Reservation. Please see Valedictorians, starting on page 2
On Thursday, May 14, at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium, the 13 awards ceremony honored students on campus. “I feel the awards ceremony is very important. It is like the Boone Oscars. Is is a fun time to dress up and celebrate the end of the year,” SGA treasurer Lindsey Grist said. About 200 students attended the two hour long ceremony. Attendees dressed in business attire. Approximately 50 people presented club and department awards and community scholarships. “My favorite part of the ceremony is seeing the reactions of [the students] getting the awards,” SGA sponsor Annette Montgomery said. Principal Margaret McMillen spoke in addition to the presenters. A reception followed in the Freshman/Sophomore cafeteria. Montgomery and the SGA officers started planning and organizing the event in February. All clubs were signed up via e-mail. The officers were in charge of food, invitations and ordering the awards. They also organized the reception and set up the auditorium with tables and awards. “The hardest part for me was making sure I entered every award and spelled the [recipient’s] name right,” Grist said. SGA sponsored the whole event from funds accumulated from rose sales and previous years. Overall, the event cost about $2,000. The average price for an award was $6.95. SGA paid for each club’s first four awards. The sponsors paid for any additional awards clubs choose to present. The officers received the awards May 6 and cross checked for spelling errors on May 8 and held a practice May 12 during fourth period.

attention in class,” Mahler said. Her favorite class throughout high school was her Perry Allen’s photography class because of the chance it gave her to be artistic. “I like doing something artsy because I am not a very artsy person. Also, my dad liked to take pictures so I take after him in that,” Mahler said. Mahler plans to attend the University of Florida next year and hopes to become a pediatrician. Although her future plans may change, Mahler is sure that her family will support her in whatever major she chooses. “My family, even my extended family, is always so supportive of me in whatever I want to do. They are always proud of me,” Mahler said. Despite the controversy over the decision to have homecoming on campus, one of Mahler’s fondest memories of Boone comes from her senior homecoming dance. This was the first year the dance was hosted on campus versus a rented venue. Mahler’s advice to underclassmen is to challenge themselves academically. “Challenge yourself in classes but not to the point where you will be so stressed out that you can’t enjoy anything,” Mahler said.

Cheerleader takes top spot After dancing for 13 years and dancing for Bravettes her first two years of high school, senior Jennifer Mahler decided to do something new. She tried out for varsity cheerleading her junior year, an experience which would become one of her proudest moments at Boone. “[My favorite activity in high school] was cheerleading because I got to hang out with a lot of different people. It was fun doing something new and cheering at the sports games. [I liked] being a part of the football games and trying to get the crowd excited for the game,” Mahler said. Because of the success in her rigorous academic course load throughout her high school years, Mahler is the top valedictorian, with the highest weighted grade point average of 5.1. All through high school, Mahler was able to balance a schedule full of rigorous academics and extracurricular activities including varsity cheerleading and weightlifting, National Honor Society, Math Club, Mu Alpha Theta and French Club. “I was successful because I always worked my hardest and did my best work. Seniors earn praise from peers By JESSICA MCCOY
Every year at prom a select few seniors are given different titles according to different personality traits. Known as student superlatives, Junior Class officers announced these awards at 11:45 p.m. on April 18. Each award recipient received an Oscar-like trophy to go along with his title. “I think it’s important that people are recognized by their peers for their unique traits, and it’s fun to look back on in 10-15 years,” Senior Class sponsor Sarah Kittrell said. Voting for the superlatives took place between April 8-10 using the eduballot Web site where seniors go online to vote. The seniors had the possibility of seeing the name of every single senior in order to choose which student he wanted to vote for each superlative. Superlatives like, “Unsung Hero”, “Most Accident Prone”, “Most Notable Laugh”, “Most Likely to Brighten Your Day”, and “Personality Plus”, are all new superlatives that were not used for the class of 2008.

Trivia whiz anticipates college By EMILY O’LOANE
Despite his flawless academic record, senior Francis Moncerate remains surprised that he was named a valedictorian of the senior class. “I was surprised when they first said that I got it because it came out of the blue. Valedictorian is big. I didn’t expect it, but I was really glad [when I got it]. All the hard work paid off so it was worth all the sacrifices,” Moncerate said. Because of his interests in math and geography, Moncerate participated in extracurricular activities such as Quiz Bowl, Geometry Club, Math Club and Mu Alpha Theta throughout high school. “I am just interested in random trivia,” Moncerate said. Moncerate’s extracurricular activities never negatively impacted his academics. “I concentrated on studying really hard and getting my assignments done. I had goals to get high grades and to maximize my time,” Moncerate said. Moncerate also credits his parents and friends for giving him the desire to succeed. “[My parents] have been there for me and supported me in all I do. They pushed me in school and other
“
things that would benefit me, while sacrificing their own time and efforts for me. [My friends also] helped me out with my homework by studying together and giving me tips on assignments,” Moncerate said. Moncerate plans to attend either Florida State University, University of Florida, University of North Florida or University of Central Florida in the fall. He is still undecided on a major. “[My favorite part of senior year was] getting accepted to colleges because I am look forward to attending a university. I was relieved when I got in,” Moncerate said. Out of all of the classes Moncerate took in high school, he most enjoyed Michael Dorman’s Advanced Placement United States History class. “[Dorman] has a sense of humor so he was funny while he talked. He made the subject interesting by adding in additional information,” Moncerate said. Moncerate’s favorite part of Boone was the educational experience he received in class. “[My favorite part of Boone was] making new friends, learning and expanding my knowledge of all subjects, especially history and geography because they were really interesting to me,” Moncerate said.
I was surprised when they first said I was valedictorian because it came out of the blue.

Soccer player hits academic stride By EMILY O’LOANE
Out of all of the activities senior Laura Uncapher participated in during high school, she attributes newspaper as being her favorite. “[Newspaper] gave me a niche of friends I could always rely on and a room I could always go to if I didn’t want to socialize. It gave me something to focus on so I wouldn’t get bored after school and also something to put my skills into,” Uncapher said. Her proudest moment at Boone came when she was named editorin-chief of the newspaper her senior year. “It was a long battle and I felt like I worked my butt off to get here. My dream finally came to fruition [when I received the position],” Uncapher said. Her schedule of extracurricular activities included athletic and academic pursuits. She played varsity soccer at Boone and was also on a club soccer team along with being the treasurer of Math
Club and the secretary of Spanish Honor Society. However, her busy schedule did not have a negative affect on her academic record, which gave her the opportunity to become valedictorian. “I actually didn’t want to become a valedictorian because of the speech, but you shouldn’t taint perfection with a B and I didn’t want to purposely do bad, so it just kind of happened,” Uncapher said. Despite all her scholarly pursuits, the most important aspect of Uncapher’s time in high school was the group of friends she made throughout the years. “[Friends] have taught me my life doesn’t have to just be about school. They have taught me how to have fun, how to take a break and that I can be boring when I am a grownup,” Uncapher said. Uncapher developed her soccer talent on and off campus. “I love soccer. It is a very good stress reliever. It is like a comfort sport because I have been doing it
for so long. I have found that I am happier after playing because of the endorphins,” Uncapher said. Uncapher plans to attend the University of Florida next year and to major in International Business. Besides UF, she was also accepted to Stetson University and the University of Georgia. “[I am most looking forward] to being independent because I can finally live on my own and make my own decisions like deciding who I get to hang out with and how late. I am just looking forward to freedom in general, but I don’t think I am going to have total freedom yet, only minor freedom [in college],” Uncapher said. Because she most enjoyed the community on campus, Uncapher believes it is important to try everything while maintaining a flawless academic record at the same time. “I found the secret formula to getting an A. I can’t tell you what it is though,” Uncapher said.

KICK THAT BALL. In a game against Colonial, senior Laura Uncapher takes the ball down the field. “My favorite memory was when I made the wrinning goal in the Winter Tournament and we won,” Uncapher said. Uncapher played varsity soccer all four years.

Mathematician plans military career By EMILY O’LOANE

MATHEMATICS DRILLS. On call while in the math center, senior Jose Jerez reviews Calculus problems and formulas. “[During senior year, school] is no longer just about learning something. It is more about getting something out of the material,” Jerez said. Jerez tutors in the Math Center every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Throughout high school, salutatorian Jose Jerez pursued an interest in math that first appeared in him during eighth grade. “I had the luck of having a really good eighth grade math teacher [named] Bobbie Jo Behrens. On her door, she had a Chinese proverb that said ‘If you don’t expect from the student what he cannot accomplish, he won’t do what he can.’ She sort of peaked my interest in math and put me in summer school geometry before my freshman year,” Jerez said. Jerez cultivated his mathematical interests by becoming a member of
the Math Club as well as a Math Center tutor, which he cites as his favorite activity in high school. “I really like when people have those moments where they understand something. I like watching people think,” Jerez said. Although Jerez’s extracurricular activities are mainly centered around math, one of his favorite classes in high school was Jennifer Hilley’s Advanced Placement Literature class. “[Hilley] is really funny. [I liked] Teresa Tachon and Vicky Nicoll. Each is passionate about teaching her subject and is passionate in what she does,” Jerez said.
After moving to Florida from California, Jerez was most impressed with the long-standing traditions that Boone had. “[Boone] is very steeped in traditions. I came from California and they didn’t really have all this tradition. Everyone puts a lot more importance on tradition here, which is a good difference,” Jerez said. Jerez’s brother remains the most influential person in his life because of his brother’s life experiences. “[My brother] went through what I went through before me, so he taught me the things to do and, more importantly, not to do,” Jerez said.
In addition to his academic extracurriculars, Jerez also enjoys athletic pursuits such as running. “I like [running] because you have everything you need. It is simple,” Jerez said. Jerez earned admittance to Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Florida and University of Central Florida. However, instead of deciding to attend one of these four-year universities, Jerez plans on joining the military and studying on a military base. “[I am most looking forward to] the uncertainty of [my future]. I don’t know what is going to happen,” Jerez said.
Writer chooses journalism By EMILY O’LOANE
After being on the newspaper staff for three years and an editor for two years, senior Danielle Cole has decided to major in journalism at the University of Central Florida. “To be honest, I hated to write until seventh grade. We used to do these creative assignments though in seventh grade, so I sort of got interested,” Cole said. “I didn’t know anything [about newspaper though] until the end of my freshman year. It was sort of a way to see if I would do it as a career because I knew it was probably a good first step to see if I liked it or if it was a path I wanted to take.” Cole’s academic success is driven purely by self-motivation and
personal initiative through never purposely missing school. “I never really had pressure. Somewhere along the line, I started pressuring myself. I worked hard in high school because I felt like it,” Cole said. Despite the work that went into becoming valedictorian, Cole is frightened by her title and what it entails. “I am terrified by [becoming a valedictorian]. I don’t talk well in front of people. The whole thought of writing something to say in front of thousands of people is
“
intimidating and terrifying,” Cole said. Cole attributes friends as being one of the reasons she was able to be academically successful. “People tend to follow and do things their friends do. It was easy to feel like working hard was a priority because everyone I knew feels the same way, so I didn’t have to change for them,” Cole said. Cole also stays active in extracurricular activities other than newspaper. She is a tutor in the Writing Center, a member of
The whole thought of writing something to say in front of thousands of people is terrifying
Spanish Honor Society and National Honor Society. Cole is a second generation graduate becasue she is the daughter of alumni of Boone. “Some of my family members went to Boone also. It is nice to go to a place where my mom knew some of the teachers and can talk about them. It is cool to hear how it has changed,” Cole said. Though most of her initiative came from herself, her mother also motivated her to academically succeed in school. “Since my mom basically raised two kids by herself, I have basically seen her as a woman who could do anything. She gave me the drive to succeed and to reach for goals and be successful,” Cole said.

RHETORIC AND STYLE. On a computer during journalism class, senior Danielle Cole consults with sophomore Jessica McCoy about a page. “It has been my plan for awhile to study journalism,” Cole said. Cole has been an editor for two years.

Sibling sets standard By LAURA UNCAPHER
As the oldest of her four sisters and a foster sister, her family motivated senior Molly Johnson to succeed throughout her high school career. “They look up to me so they make me want to be a good role model. I do my best and take challenging classes,” Johnson said. Johnson enjoys time with her family and baking items like banana bread. Every Friday she makes dinner for her family which helped relieve stress from the school week. “I make dinner after a long week because [cooking] helps me relax and forget about school for a while,” Johnson said. In addition to her seven AP classes, Johnson was a member of the finance magnet all four years. In addition to the magnet program, Johnson was involved in Spanish Honor Society and was treasurer her junior
year. Her favorite activity in high school was Math Club because math is one of her favorite subjects. She was treasurer of Mu Alpha Theta her senior year. “I like math because it follows the rules. In English there are exceptions. I like that [math] is straight forward,” Johnson said. Johnson plans to attend the University of Central Florida. Although she is going to declare undecided, she is thinking about a career in business or finance. As a National Merit Finalist, UCF is giving her $40,000 over the course of four years. “I am looking forward to not having as tough a schedule [in college] for the next couple years, and less homework. It is exhausting staying up late every night doing homework,” Johnson said. Working to become valedictorian, Johnson attributes her success to her parent’s expectations and her unwillingness to give up.

FUNNIEST TEACHER
What a nice honor! I am so proud of Boone High School. By showing my pride, I hope that all the students, athletes and club members see how much I care.
I think it suits me. I prefer to work in a relaxed environment. I like to joke around as long as we get our work done.

It surprised me because I suggested myself for several others but hey, it’s an award. Perhaps Whitman said it best, ‘I am large, I contain multitudes.’ Now he’s quotable.

MOST ATHLETIC
With 14 different categories ranging from “most school spirited” to “most interesting tangents”, 140 seniors filled out a ballot to elect the faculty member they felt fit each category best. The ballots were distributed to senior English teachers to allow students a chance to fill out the ballot. Once completed, the ballots were collected and votes were then tallied to pick one winner for each of the categories. The winning faculty members are pictured and listed below. MOST QUOTABLE TEACHER

Athlete achieves academic success By LAURA UNCAPHER
Spending 12 hours a week in the water, senior Emily Hester excelled in the athletic arena as well as in her academic life. “My favorite activity is water polo because it is a really fun team sport and it is not school. I like playing important games, like against Winter Park, with my teammates because it is fun,” Hester said. While taking 10 Advanced Placement classes throughout her high school career, Hester also participated on the varsity swimming and water polo teams all four years. As a junior on water polo, FHSAA named Hester District 3 Player of the Year and a part of the All-Central Florida team. Currently captain of the team, Hester helped to lead the team to the state tournament. She plans to receive as much recognition for her athletic prowess as years past. Hester plans to play club water polo at the

University of Florida. Not only active in sports, Hester also was a member of French Club and French Honor Society. As a senior, she was secretary of French Honor Society. Due to her love of math and science, Hester will major in engineering. Her passion lead her to be active in the Math club and becoming vice president of Mu Alpha Theta. Although a math-oriented person, Hester’s favorite teacher was Jennifer Hilley, her AP Literature teacher. “She doesn’t teach in the most linear fashion but it helps me learn better because she teaches using other activities versus reading a book [like other English classes],” Hester said. Ready to graduate, Hester can’t wait to be independent while at UF. “I am most looking forward to being on my own because I don’t like my parents telling me what to do. Freedom is nice,” Hester said.
I am looking forward to living on my own. I don’t like my parents telling me what to do. Freedom is nice.
GET OPEN! On Feb. 26, senior Emily Hester looks to pass the ball in a game against Ocoee. “I like water polo because I have put a lot of work into the game so I know it really well,” Hester said. Hester was All Metro Academic Player of the Year as a junior.

Continuing the tradition, senior David Brice is following in the footsteps of his father - Class of 1970. Both will be Boone alumni after May 29. “I got to be at the same place my dad and cousins went to high school. It was really interesting to see and be a part of the campus they were on,” Brice said. Coming from Trinity Lutheran School and an eighth grade class of 24 students, Brice used band to acclimate to the larger high school atmosphere. “My favorite activity was band because I got to meet a lot of new people and made new friends. It is a good way to bridge the gap between public and private school,” Brice said. Brice found his niche among band friends. He also was a daily consultant in the Writing Center. “[Working in the writing center] is rewarding because the skill of writing carries over into all other classes. I helped [my clients] become better at their writing,” Brice said. Brice plans to attend the University of Central Florida. Majoring in biotechnology, a prerequisite for biomedical engineering, he plans to use his major to create new medicines to help others. Never planning to become valedictorian, Brice just tried his best academically. “I was successful because I didn’t leave things to the last minute. I put them over a span of time,” Brice said.

Taking nine advanced placement classes over her high school career, Edquist used her love for jewelry making to relieve the stress created by her busy schedule. “I make jewelry because it is a creative outlet for me and I can’t really draw,” Edquist said. She began making jewelry in seventh grade when she received a kit fo9r Christmas. Her talent became known when her junior year the Parent and Teacher Associaion asked her to make earrings for a charity event they were doing. “[Jewelry making] is all in the details. If you focus on the details, you can forget whatever else that is on your mind at the time,” Edquist said. Despite her strong academic work load, Edquist was also a member of the band all four years. She played the clarinet in the marching band and wind ensemble. Under the Friday night lights, Edquist formed her favorite high school memories. “It is cool to see all the hands doing the chop because it reminds me that we are a part of something bigger,” Edquist said. “It is a tradition that extends past our four years. I could come back in 10 years and they would still be doing it.” Edquist never planned to become valedictorian. “When I think of a valedictorian, I think of someone who is really good at what they do. I know my flaws so I didn’t know it was possible,” Edquist said. Accepted to Clemson, the University of Central Florida and University of Florida, Edquist plans to attend UF’s honors college in the fall. Although undecided as to her major, she has one future goal. “I plan on making money because I don’t want to live on the streets,” Edquist said.

PUFF, PUFF. Ih her band class, senior Karalyn Edquist practices her clarinet with the rest of the band. “[My favorite time] was the events leading to football states. With band you are forced to go to every game and even though it was a long season, it was nice to see them succeed,” Edquist said. Edquist was Librarian her junior year.
STAND AT ATTENTION. At a home football game, senior Jere Stern directs the band. “For Florida, it is an old school so there are a lot of traditions and school spirit surrounding the football team,” Stern said. Stern has been a drum major for three years.
With varied interests that include everything from knitting to clarinet to water polo, senior Jere Stern’s favorite activity throughout high school was band. “I did the most with [band]. I was made a drum major and I just enjoy playing the clarinet because I like creating music,” Stern said. S t e r n credits her academic success in high school to finishing all her assignments. “I retain information well. I am not organized but I get stuff done. It had occurred to me [that I could become a valedictorian]. It wasn’t my goal in high school but I thought it would be nice,” Stern said. Stern’s father also motivated her to be successful. “My dad was a bad student and he encouraged me to be better than him. [My parents] expected the best out of me,” Stern said. After an academically rigorous junior year, Stern’s favorite part of her senior year was the leniency of it. “Senior year is really easy. It’s a lot easier [than other years]. If you are stressed [junior] year, don’t stress about next year,” Stern said. After being accepted to schools like University of Florida, New College and University of Central Florida, Stern has decided to attend Duke University in North Carolina next year. “I know I will be pre-med but I plan on majoring in either chemistry or history [while there],” Stern said. Out of all of the activities she participated in, Stern credits her peers as being especially important. “[My peers] made things tolerable. [My friends] shaped what kind of person I was and made [high school] more fun,” Stern said. Stern’s advice for underclassmen is to remain unswayed by pressure. “Do what you enjoy and don’t get hung up on what is expected of you,” Stern said.

Pimp my dorm By KATIE EDWARDS
Shopping for dorms may seem like a hard task to tackle but with a little guidance one can have his or her dream room without the expense. When buying for a dorm room one wants to get high quality without high prices. Stores like Target and IKEA give buyers that satisfaction. From dorm essentials to furniture, they have what is needed to be ready to go off to college. To make shopping easier one can go to Target.com or IKEA.com and shop by price to find the items needed at the right price. One cool thing about going to IKEA is when you shop there they have rooms on display based in feet, like 200 sq. feet or 200 sq. feet. IKEA has an array of different styles. College is the time to make one’s place his or her own sense of style. Prices shouldn’t be the thing to hold one back.

GOTTA KICK IT UP. Performing at a basketball halftime show, senior Anglea LaGambina dances for the audience. “My favorite part of senior year was my responsibility with Bravettes, working my way up to captain,’” LaGambina said. She was a Bravettes dancer all four years.
Dancer that never sleeps By LAURA UNCAPHER
Putting her hours of dance lessons into practice through Bravettes, senior Angela LaGambina attributes Bravettes to her favorite activity. “Bravettes was my favorite activity because it was a learning experience. I applied my dance ability at school. I put my passion into motion [on campus],” LaGambina said. Starting dance lessons when she was four, LaGambina spends 15 hours a week for dance in and out of school. As a captain of Bravettes, she also spent an additional five hours a week choreographing dances and practicing routines. They performed during halftime at football and basketball games. In addition to regional and national competitions, she is a member of Pointe of Impact, a dance company at Dancer’s Pointe. “When I was little, it started as something my mom put me in but over the years I have developed a
passion for it that always keeps me coming back,” LaGambina said. Despite her busy dance schedule on and off campus, LaGambina was also active in the student government. She was a member of Freshman and Sophomore Class Council and was Junior Class treasurer. Currently Senior Class treasurer, LaGambina attributes being a part of the Senior Class officers as her favorite part of her senior year. “I liked being an integral part of all the traditions and activities that Boone has to offer [through Senior Class] because I was able to have an influence on Boone’s campus while building lasting friendships,” LaGambina said. Also a FCA board member and Love Letters’ treasurer, LaGambina is involved with numerous campus clubs. She spends 20 hours on campus and off for dance that to participate in all her other activities she has to sacrifice her free time
and sleep. “I honestly don’t know how I do it. [Juggling clubs and school] requires staying focused and sacrificing a lot of personal time and sleep in order to keep doing what I love, like dance and Senior Class,” LaGambina said. Attending the University of Florida, she plans to major in either public relations or elementary education. She is going to get involved in campus ministry and the UF dance team in addition to rushing for a sorority and taking dance classes. In addition to UF, she was also accepted to the Florida State University. Her parting words of advice to underclassmen are to get involved on campus. “I couldn’t have lived without clubs, because that is where I got to be a part of something outside of school. It is where I got plugged in and built my friendships,” LaGambina said.
Seniors get funny Pranks, from page 1 disruption to the school day. The 13 seniors are facing suspension and possibly will not walk at graduation. All of the desks were returned to their classrooms by 9:30 a.m., the start of the school day. “I think they should have been easier on the students. They didn’t really destroy anything. Suspending them is not right. They didn’t hurt anything,” McCann said. At Cypress Creek, senior pranks are not uncommon. Last year, seniors let three pigs loose on their campus. They were each labeled with a number: one, two and four. Faculty quickly wrangled the pigs, but spent hours searching for the “missing” three. “Senior pranks are amusing, if they don’t harm
or disrupt anything. I don’t think it’s something that should never be disruptive,” English teacher Cindy Hutsell said. During Hutsell’s time as a student on campus she experienced a senior prank. “This guy named Joe was part of a group that liked to get into trouble. He told people that he was going to ride his motorcycle down the hall. After school was over on June 11, Joe rode his motorcycle down the hall of the 300 building. He had an easy exit because back then there was no 1000 building,” Hutsell said. According to Hutsell, Joe never got caught. “I was such a goody two-shoes, but I did get a little giggle out of the prank,” Hutsell said.

Graduation is right around the corner and with the accomplishment of graduation comes the opportunity to throw a grad party. It is not hard to overplan a party and have it end up being a bore for all attending. There are undercover do’s and don’ts when it comes to how to throw a really great party. With these helpful tips, one can throw a graduation party that will be talked about until it’s time to head off to college. The number one secret to having a party succeed is to have someone else throw it for you. Another party secret is to make sure only people you love and care for attend. This helps one from becoming distracted with drama or having a bad time. Another secret to keep in mind is that graduation parties come with graduation gifts. Relatives as well as close friends should help provide one with dorm room needs, school supplies and some pocket change to get you started. The larger the guest list, the more gifts one will receive.
DON’T
1. 2. 3.
Pick a date for the party up to three weeks in advance.
A guest list should be created directly after choosing a date for the party.
If one is going to incorporate a theme to his graduation party, he should choose it up to two weeks before the party. Popular themes are luaus, casino, or western.
You’re Invited to a ROCKIN’ Party!
For Your Eyes Only

Saturday, May 15 12 o’clock in afternoon Our Home 1234 My Way Confirm your status to Mrs. Doe at (407)123-4567 by Wed., May 12
You must complete this mission Do not disappoint
4. 5.
Invitations and announcements need to be mailed out approximately two weeks before the party. If one chose to have a theme, he should announce this in the invitations. Do not use cheesy invitations such as Hannah Montana or Spiderman.
One needs to order a cake one week before the party. The cake should be large enough to feed every guest at the party and have a little extra.
6. 7. 8. 9. 10.
Choose music up to one week in advance. Music should create an upbeat mood for the event and include songs that bring back memories your friends and family will enjoy.
Purchase decorations in moderation four days before the event. If having a themed party, buy decorations to enhance the theme.
To keep it from going stale, food and beverages should be purchased on day before the party. Chips and dip, burgers and hot dogs and snack foods or finger foods are acceptable.
The decorations should be set up the day of the event. Do not put too many decorations in one place, they should be scattered and organized throughout the space in which the party is being held.
The last thing to do is pick up the cake. Set the cake along with the food on a table next to the beverages as soon as guests arrive, this will keep it from melting or getting too hot.

it’s a colorful life By JESSICA MCCOY
A smorgasbord of art filled the air at the 24th annual art festival. Made up of art gathered by the department and its students, the festival took place Friday, April 10, outside of the 1100 building. Each teacher worked with his or her students to pick the best pieces for display. All art students were invited to participate and as a result hundreds of pieces were on display. “It is important for all students to have their day in the sun just as the scholars and athletes get theirs. It is important for them to get recognized,” Mikki Maurer, painting teacher, said. One of the biggest attractions of the festival is the sidewalk chart art. In groups of two to four people students decorated one square with his or her own design. In order to participate, each student turned in permission forms and the square idea beforehand for Maurer to approve. The students worked from 7:30 a.m. until the cut off time at noon. The art department provided each group with one large box of
chalk, anything else the artists had to bring. In addition to the chalk art, paintings, photography and jewelry, there were performing artists too. “I’ve never done something like that before and I just wanted to try. I would do it again,” sophomore Molly Wallace, who sang, said. As well as being on display a selection of the art was for sale along with food and drinks to raise money for the art department. According to Maurer, it cost close to $1000 to put on the show. In the 24 years of the festival all students were able to view the festivities, which created a conundrum. It was so popular that hundreds of students came each period, but that created a large mass of students to supervise. To assist with the bottle necking that occurred last year, administration asked that only seven classes per period attend. Maurer felt this was sad. “[My favorite part of the festival is] the total involvement of teachers, the support of parents and people in the community to come and see the students’ art,” Maurer said. Due to less attendees allowed to participate each period, Maurer ended up spending about $200 out of pocket. “I really want this to continue as a wonderful celebration of the arts for years to come,” Maurer said. “We need to make some improvements next year and still keep it a festival for all.”

1. ALIEN PLANET. Finishing up the alien in his square, senior Xavier Sosa fills in last touches. “It was my last year and I always wanted to do it,” Sosa said. “I felt accomplished that we had finished in that short amount of time.” The square was a collaboration between Sosa and Mark Barreto that showed an alien standing on top of another planet. 2. SAILOR PIN UP. To get the right effect, junior Natalie D’Amico smooths out the chalk. 3. ADD A LITTLE SHADE. Sophomore Jalen Taylor works in the upper right corner of his marionette themed square. “It was a fun type of art and it gave me something to do,” Taylor said. 4. I THINK I CAN. In the final minutes of the allotted time, senior Briana Angelo adds the blue background color. “We were really short on time. I wish I had more time to spend on the background and lettering. Overall, I think we got a good reaction. Teachers were telling us it was cute and their favorite, so I was pleased,” Angelo said. Angelo, who worked with Jake Coleman and Margo Lorbecke, took third place. 5. TOMS. To earn money for the art department and the Kemosabe Kloset, they sold Tom shoes. Students in the painting classes painted the shoes to mimic those sold online. 6. SELLING ART. On the back patio of the art building, freshman Allyse Suganuma helps price items of jewelry for sale. All jewelry students donated pieces for the show. 7. A LITTLE SHAKY. In front of the guidance building, sophomore Molly Wallace performs “Swing Life Away” by Rise Against. “Getting up there in front of everyone, I was scared to death. My heart was beating so fast, but it was worth it. I’d do it again,” Wallace said.
