Architecture has broadened my perspective of looking at things. Understanding the psychology of fabric along with the people and culture to create a space is something I believe is the key to good architecture. I’m a curious and enthusiastic person. I’m always hungry to learn new things and be part of things that have not been done before.

THESIS GUIDE

AREA: 2 acres

Architecture and the built environment that people inhabit create an identity and define their view of themselves. It acts as a constant reminder of who they are and where they belong. It further extends to their culture, tradition, language, food, festivals, border, and territory.

ABSTRACT

Over the last few years, Kerala is experiencing an unprecedented flow of migrant workers from different parts of India. Higher wages, employment opportunities, and shortages of local laborers make Kerala a profitable job market for workers from the different States.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the current relationship between migrants and localites in Kerala. The intention is to understand an urban fabric in Kerala, from the reason being migrants and localites live in close proximity, the existing inequality, how they interact and use public spaces. The research explores the needs and benefits of interaction between migrants and localites by creating a space that facilitates the same. It also aims at identifying the role of architecture in the construction of the identity and belongingness of migrant laborers.

STUDY OF MIGRANT LABOURERS IN KERALA

Perumbavoor, Kerala

From the article “Revitalized Public Spaces” by ‘Paula Pintos’. Having an open space to enjoy, certainly prompts a sense of community and belonging to one’s own proximate environment, whilst creating positive psychological effects by establishing relationships between members of the community.

INDIA KERALA PERUMBAVOORERNAKULAM

According to IMN analysis of Census 2011 data Kerala attracts around 57% of interstate migrant laborers. 67% of which are from Assam, Odisha, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.

The first migration pool to Kerala is in the late 80s and early 90s after the legal ban of wood felling and closure of plywood industries in Assam. It was also a time when plywood industries were set up in Kerala. They came in groups and were much preferred for their expertise. Later, when the construction boom started in the mid-90s many of them moved to construction, where the wages were much higher.

Ernakulam of Kerala has the highest number of migrant laborers in Kerala. Perumbavoor, vattakkattupady, nellikuzhi, munambam etc are the major pockets.

Perumbavoor is one of the major pockets of migrant laborers. Most of them still works in the plywood factories.

MIGRANT LABOURERS

Though the literal meaning of ‘Bhai’ is brother or Annan in Kerala it is a synonym of migrant labour. Kandanthara is a low-lying marshy land locality in Perumbavoor and it has the largest concentration of migrant labourers. Multiple accommodations are set up in this region for labourers. With migrant labourers dominating the place, they have set up restaurants, provision stores, fish stalls, tea shops, bakeries, and barbershops. Hence mockingly the locality is called ‘mini Bengal’.

During my interaction with migrants in Kandanthara, they were quite welcoming, told me stories of their hometown, how they started to learn ma layalam . Momin Sheikh, one of the migrants from Bengal has been working in the plywood industry for 5 years now. He said, “Kandanthara is like home”. Another migrant from Assam Shafiqul Islam said migrant workers are deeply hurt when they are addressed as ‘Bhai’ by people. Though they have proper names, the average Malayali refers to them as ‘Bengali ‘or ‘Assami’ (Assamese)’.

INTERACTION WITH LOCALITES

During my second visit to Perumbavoor, I aimed at now meeting the localites. When I asked them about the migrants present in the area, I was bombarded with questions such as why are you going there? Who do you want to meet? Why are you going alone?

The driver of the rickshaw I took even offered to accompany me to Kandanthara. Further in conversation with the localites they voiced their concerns regarding the issues revolving around safety. The concerns raised by them were migrants are not good people, they are bad omen to the society, localites doesnt feel safe to leave kids at home alone, perumbavoor is not safe for girls anymore, and one of the family in the region were trying to look for houses elsewhere, since their kids aren’t getting a good marriage proposals.

This project established itself over the city of Jaipur, buried in its rich history. A contemporary interpretation of the essence of various elements of Jaipur gets this project rooted in the place where it belongs. Modern ways of handling vernacular methods help it be true to its place. The city library building accommodates varying programs that require different conditions. Hence the separation of reading spaces from the more public and lively part of the library. This segregation enables the development of a complex arrangement of interconnected spaces with the potential that the site had to offer.

STUDIO BRIEF PERFORMATIVE ARCHITECTURE

The semester focused at a public building in the realm of the urban envelope of Jaipur involving all its historic and cultural elements. The direction is attuned in dealing with issues of performative architecture alongside base design ideas. The aim was to achieve a design solution that combines simple logic, imagination, and street-smart pragmatism

“What this town has not given her the book will provide; a sheep, a wilderness of new soluions.

The book has already lived through its troubles.

The book has a calm cover, a straight spine”

Initial idea was to have two built floating structures, oriented more towards the ecological corridor of the site. And the space underneath the structure to be plaza taking advantage of the shadow created by the building.

Also to have a museum more towards the road and library away from the road to have a peaceful environment inside.

PLAZA

Space within a space.

Idea is to create a microclimate inside the site.

Hot and dry climate:

WIND CATCHER, as its name denotes, is considered a part of a building form as is customarily constructed in any hot and dry or humid area of Iran. It plays an effective role is modifying heat and adjusting a temparature of interior living spaces in regard to thermal comfort as it uses the convection created by a wind flow and natural pure energy as exists in nature.

Since Jaipur falls under the same climatic zone, similar method has been introduced to the building to bring down the temparature.

STUDIO BRIEF DEVELOPMENT OF A PHILOSOPHY TO ITS CREATION

This semester’s brief was about Developing from philosophical ideologies to programmatic solutions while understanding the institution’s intent and philosophy to deliver its programmatic requirement. The design of this law college would aim to promote cross-learning across the different verticals and batches of students present on the campus. This role of a law student will further be integrated with the public at a programmatic and spatial level.

Coherent arrangement of all spaces is intended to build a stronger connection to each other while not compromising on the function’s integrity. The administrative spaces and the Academic spaces have their hierarchy of shared spaces while ensuring that the academic spaces and the public spaces in the campus are separated at the programmatic zoning level.

STUDIO BRIEF

The aim of the studio was to build stronger narratives in the process of design going beyond just the typological requirements of the programme. The intent was also to potray and depict a phenomena or persona as an experiential perception of spaces based on the key aspects of movement, scale, light and enclosure.

The Syrian civil war has become the most disturbing problem recently. Everyday we hear numerous news reports about the military conflicts in this country. We read about victims, refugees and severe bombing. On the other hand some are less educated and helpless regarding the situation.

A

Plan

I wanted my site to be in the most densely populated city in the world. So that the building acts as reminder of whats happening around them as people tend to forget.

I chose New York. New York is the sixth most densely populated city in United States. World’s major commercial, financial and cultural centres are in New York.

42 | Memorial INTENT SITE
Iterations for the form

Along the research, found some disturbing images of children trying to sleep, search for food, play under the destroyed buildin g. Some crying not able to find their parents or loved ones, some doesn’t know whats happening around them. In this memorial I tried to depict their feelings with the play of light and depth. TURMOIL, FEAR, VIOLENCE, PAIN, HELPLESSNESS

The memorial is trying to tell the story of Syria from how it was to how it is. It has a large entrance meaning the people in S yria is kind hearted and welcoming. As the days goes by the situation starts to change(hence the head space is decreasing) corruption, unemployment, drought, uneven econo my was everywhere. Slowly people started to question and the violence broke out. World organisation was their only hope, there was no hand too(the light is the hope and stair is depicting hoplessness). The situation reached to a point where people feared their own reflection(depicted through reflecting light). The light which i s hope has caused a trauma. Through the journey its slowly trying to build a hope that war and chaos will slowly fade away and Syria will be the place it was befor

STUDIO BRIEF

Udaiyalur is a town in the south of India, around 12km from the city of Kumbakonam, Tamilnadu. Nutrient rich alluvial soil deposited along the riverbed makes it great zone of cultivation. The close knot of the people living here have been part of this community for generations. The study programme included observation and analysis of this settlement in terms of demographics and of the built. Larger lines drawn from the history and climate playing its role in the evolution of this settlement was also made.

PLANS AND SECTIONS

Udaiyalur is an agrarian settlement 8km away from kumbakonam town. This study was done in the vision of understanding vernacular architecture with respect to geography, history, and all other socio cultural aspects.

Udaiyalur being in the delta regions of the river Cauvery, the eastern part of the Indian peninsula, receives the Northeast monsoon. It holds nutrient-rich alluvial soils whose deposits are brought by the slowing river. This land is known for the growth of paddy along with black gram, sugarcane, banana, coconut, red gram, green grom, sesame, and maize.

One experiences transition in Udaiyalur from the street to the house concerning scale and light. The enclosure varies as one moves around the house, thus covering different zones of privacy. Every house welcomes a person by providing shade and a plinth. The shade is brought by a sloping roof that filters light while also cooling the space the plinth responds anthropometrically which allows activities to happen comfortably.

The simple science of hot air rising above and cold air settling down has been applied in the houses of Udoiyalur The wall and the floor of the court heats up during the day, and as the hot air rises above fresh cooler air comes from the backyard and equilibrates through the linear doors.

BIAXIAL PLAN

All the houses are bi-axial, one which connects two streets, it moves through and through the courts and transition spaces. The other one runs through thalavaram and adupparai. Here the longer axis is used by the peasants without disturbing the served spaces and the shorter axis is used by the owners which move between the served spaces.

KOLLAIPURAM

A large portion of the site is occupied by this zone. It is a kitchen garden. The family grows banana, mango, coconut, herbs, greens, etc. This has an exit from the house to the service lane.

This courtyard has a well. It is meant for services washing utensils, bathing, etc. Cattle are also kept here. Today, toilets are built within this court.

MUTTRAM AND THALAVARAM

As a living area, thalavaram is lit by mutram. Muttram is an unbuilt zone which is surrounded by thalavaram here life in a house happens.

RIZHI

This space acts as a binder or as a physical link between two distinctive zones. This is a completely enclosed passage which divides two bright and warm zones.

THINNAI

Every house welcomes a person by providing shade and a plinth. The shade is brought by a sloping roof that filters light while also cooling the space. The plinth responds anthropomet rically, which allows activities to happen.
