WELCOME TO THE HICKORY METRO!
A PLACE WHERE GENUINE SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY COMES NATURALLY... As CEO of the Hickory Metro Convention Center and Visitors Bureau and on behalf of the Tourism Development Authority and Tourism Partners, I sincerely welcome you to the Metro. The Hickory Metro is made up of four counties and more than 20 cities of all sizes that each have their own unique flair. Hickory is the largest city in the Metro and the regional hub, so we offer you the best of both worlds by having big city amenities with small town charm. North Carolina is the sixth most visited state in the United States and the Hickory Metro is in the top tier of where both business and leisure travelers stop and stay a while. The entire Metro has dozens of hotels, hundreds of restaurants — from farm to table cuisine to well-known chains — and dozens of breweries, wineries, and distilleries that will awaken your taste buds. We have attractions from furniture shopping to touching a live sting ray to catching a fly ball watching professional baseball. The Hickory Metro Destination Guide is the result of many months of hard work lead by Sarah Davis, Director of Sales & Marketing for the Hickory Metro Convention Center & Visitors Bureau. Sarah and her team of contributing designers and photographers have created a fun and fabulous guide full of stories about our community. Thank you for visiting us, picking up our 2018-2019 destination guide, and taking time to learn more about our marvelous Metro. Whether it’s for business or pleasure, all visitors are welcome here. Sincerely,
and the Arts The Hickory Metro Convention Center & Visitors Bureau has made every effort to ensure the accuracy of information presented in this guide, but assume no responsibility for errors, changes, or omissions.

O
ur heritage began long before our German roots took hold. The tribes of the Catawba Nation left far more than their food, pottery and way of life for our area. The original inhabitants’ affinity for the compounds of the earth led them to settle along the Catawba River, a fertile land with natural richness that allowed the Catawbans to thrive and farm along the banks of the river. The tribe was a large and powerful group of farmers, hunters, and traders, quickly

The community united to create a medical treatment facility for Polio patients in record time, resulting in what is now known as “The Miracle of Hickory." The camaraderie and quick actions of the citizens combined with the assistance of the National Polio Foundation neutralized the epidemic within a year.

let’s go downtown
Hickory began as a small city whose growth and development moved it from a late nineteenth-century trading center on the Western North Carolina Railroad to a thriving twentieth-century manufacturing center for furniture, hosiery and textiles. After World War II, Hickory continued growing and by 1961 the city boasted 46 furniture plants, 89 hosiery mills, 27 other manufactures, and a population of 37,000 people. A vast urban renewal project as well as continual redevelopment also accompanied this period of growth. Much of the historic fabric of Hickory’s downtown

was removed or drastically altered in the 1960s and 1970s, leaving gaping holes in the urban landscape. However, this period also saw the emergence of historic preservation efforts in Hickory, a trend that has grown in scope by instilling pride in the city’s past by encouraging the appreciation, preservation, and continued use of Hickory’s historic resources.
Supporting life well crafted, Downtown Hickory serves as the gathering center for varied recreation and entertainment. Downtown is the hub of owner-operated local businesses, corporate headquarters, and urban living. Festivals, events, farmers markets and more downtown keep the thriving city bustling and we continue to add fun and exciting things for locals and visitors.
The Sails Original Music Series on select nights from Spring through Summer offers free concert experiences for families. Bring a picnic, chairs and enjoy! Shopping downtown, you will truly find unique, one-of-a-kind gifts for yourself and your friends and family. From local soap artisans to folk paintings and pottery, you are sure to get a real glimpse at some of the Metro’s best artists. We southerners like good hearty food but we also enjoy the things that take us back to our roots. Farm fresh cuisine is always on the menu at our local independent restaurants. With the story of where your meal came from you are sure to get the most authentic southern experience, from the food to the beverages.

Viewmont really has a passion for a palate well crafted!! Hickory native favorites like Backstreets Bar & Grill, which has been around for more than 20 years and still offering excellent food, the same hometown welcome and smile. Nice evenings out and about are always fun on the patio or in the garden area
of Cafe Rule & Wine Bar. Just looking for a casual spot with great grub? Look no further than Dante’s Pizza, Hannah’s BBQ, Thai cuisine favorite Mekvilai or The Standard Oyster Company! Take a break to sip some coffee at Copperbean, the corner coffee shop.
Just on the edge of the Viewmont district you will find the perfect mix of outdoor adventure close to a thriving shopping district. Check out Geitner Park located right along Lake Hickory. Geitner offers a paved 1.5 mile path for running, biking, walking and more. Along the path, you might even see mountain bikers trying out the newest addition of the newly constructed mountain bike trails. The Standard Oyster Company is Hickory’s
seafood and oyster haven serving up tasty and fresh coastal cuisine. Their hole-in-the-wall space is inspired by their Founder’s own vibe, resulting in a laid back and industrial “all bar” setting that is true to the core. Cafe Rule & Wine Bar

The Viewmont Business District offers shuttle services to hop on and off as you shop and dine your way through Viewmont! Enjoy the mix of super discounted sales, kids' activities, food and drink, live entertainment, and local artists - an event so special it only happens once a year!
A Passion for Palete “I've been at the Standard Oyster Company for two and a half years. We focus on fresh seafood — fresh every day from different coastal cities. Some of my favorites are oysters like Old Salts from Chincoteague Virginia, dry scallops that are phenomenal.”
“I love working at Cafe Rule because we are encouraged to be creative behind the bar. My go to cocktail is the Lawmaker with fresh blackberries and Basil Hayden's Bourbon.”
“My favorite food item is the Ahi Tuna & Avocado which is on top of our housemade crispy wontons, with fresh chunks of avocado, cilantro oil, and spicy aioli. My favorite cocktail is the Grapefruit Basil, fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, sugar, fresh muddled basil and grapefruit vodka. What I really love about working here as a team... we really put a twist on everything!”

Huntington House Furniture HUNTINGTON HOUSE “For three generations our family has had the great fortune to be part of the furniture industry producing the highest quality custom upholstery in the foothills of the North Carolina Mountains. The time-honored construction techniques that we use today are essentially unchanged from those used by my grandfather over 60 years ago. While some technologies and materials have changed through the years, the standards for quality and craftsmanship have not. As we continue to grow, we proudly honor our heritage by training the next generation of craftspeople to carry on the skills and

veryone knows it. Everyone uses it. Yet to
those who live in Hickory and the Catawba
Valley region, the definition of furniture is so
much deeper, richer and stronger. People eat, sleep and breathe furniture in this community. So much of who we are and what we do revolves around this one simple word. The
history of furniture runs so deep in our com-
munity that its roots intertwine with countless industries, businesses and common aspects of everyday life. In fact, it is estimated that
approximately 60% of all furniture in American homes originates from North Carolina furni-
ture manufacturers and related industry ven-
dors. And many of these furniture businesses
are located right here in our region. If you ever

visit Hickory, you will notice that almost every-
where you turn, the people you meet all have some connection to furniture. Whether their
grandfather hauled lumber to a local sawmill for furniture production, their father worked directly in a factory upholstering furniture,
or their aunt worked as an interior designer helping visitors select the best furniture for their homes, for over a century, this
community has truly been shaped by furni-
ture. To this day, when you travel around the world and tell people where you are from,
they almost always smile and recite that one familiar word: FURNITURE.
Hickory can trace its furniture heritage
back to the early 1900’s. George W. Hall was
a local merchant who watched freight trains haul southern lumber to northern furniture factories. Hall and a group of Hickory busi-
nessmen and bankers decided that Hickory’s regional lumber supplies should be used to
build furniture in Hickory to support the local
economy. After much deliberation and careful planning, they opened up the first furniture
factory in town and called it Hickory Furniture Company. Hall was only 28 years old at the
time when he managed that first factory and after it was successful, he decided to help
start Hickory’s second furniture factory - Martin Furniture Co., which opened less than a year later. These two factories helped create a
solid foundation for furniture manufacturers
The original Mull’s Motel and Restaurant
The Southern Furniture Market welcomes buyers CENTURY FURNITURE “The Shuford family and the associates of Century have always felt a strong sense of pride towards our Hickory factories and the artisanal nature of the furniture they produce. While being global means that we also partner with craftspeople from around the world to deliver our vision of ‘Home’, there simply is no substitute to having our company firmly grounded in American manufacturing.”... -- ALEX SHUFORD, OWNER
to grow and branch off into new companies
for many years to come. The plentiful lumber resources and trade routes along the
native rivers in the Catawba Valley region
provided a natural pathway, which encouraged skilled craftsmen and designers to settle in
Hickory. These craftsmen trained the eager
workforce that already existed in the area. By
the 1920’s and 1930’s, more furniture factories continued to open and expand throughout Hickory and the Catawba Valley.
In the late 1950’s another local business-
man and his wife - Leroy Lail and Lynn Mull Lail - owned a successful motel and restaurant in Hickory. Mull’s Motel and Restaurant was
already a popular destination for furniture wholesale dealers and buyers traveling
through town on business. Since many of
these buyers stayed at the motel and ate at the
restaurant while they were in town, several local furniture manufacturers decided to establish
Mull’s as a central meeting point to showcase
all of their product lines to potential new buyers. Once these product lines became larger and more diverse, Leroy and Lynn offered to open up the basement of their restaurant to these furniture manufacturers so they could
display more of their products to these travel-
ing buyers who were already staying on-site at their motel.
It was around
1960, when Leroy
Lail encouraged a
core group of local
furniture manufactur-
ers to come together as
an industry and display their
products twice a year on a much
larger scale; once in the spring and once in the fall. The manufacturers agreed and this bi-an-
nual wholesale furniture event became known as The Southern Furniture Market, which took place on the same site of what is now known as Hickory Furniture Mart. The Southern
Furniture Market continued to gain popularity and grow in attendance over the years. By
1985, the Lail family decided to convert their
bi-annual wholesale furniture exhibition space into a year-round retail furniture destination where locally owned furniture manufactur-
ers could distribute their products through
locally owned retail furniture showrooms. For the first time ever, visitors from around the world now had public access to the most
diverse high-quality handcrafted furniture
selections available with the additional benefit of receiving exclusive industry discounts that were comparable to wholesale pricing. The
Southern Furniture Wholesale Market officially transitioned into Hickory Furniture Mart and
Hickory soon became known as The Furniture Hand-applied nailhead trim
Capital of The World. To this day, visitors from every US state and several international countries
continue to travel to Hickory to
purchase their furniture where the
quality, value, selection and service is
unlike anywhere else.
Over the years the furniture industry
has continued to transform itself. Like any
industry, it has weathered the natural ebbs
and flows of the economic pendulum, and it continues to evolve. The advancement of
technology has changed not only the way
furniture is manufactured, distributed and sold, but it also opens up new modernized career opportunities in both furniture and design.
For those companies willing to embrace these changes, the opportunities are endless.
Today, the furniture industry in this region
is experiencing substantial growth, especially in custom upholstered products. Many
manufacturers are expanding and finding
a need to add to their workforce in order to
meet an increased demand for their products. This presents a new set of challenges for the furniture industry…training the next gener-
ation with the same expert skills of previous generations. Understanding this emerging need, several local furniture manufacturers
proactively joined forces to recruit and train the next generation of furniture craftsman. Century Furniture
VANGUARD FURNITURE
“For some, the term Made in America is a thing of the past, yet at Vanguard Furniture, the term resonates with our 600 employees, many of whom are second and third generation furniture craftsmen. I think it is important to note that we intend to continue our legacy of crafting our upholstery in America, and we feel that our customers should be proud to buy Vanguard Furniture upholstery, not simply because it’s made in North Carolina, but because it is the best furniture we know how to make. Period.”... -- ANDY BRAY, PRESIDENT
Vanguard Furniture
Their vision was to create an industry-driven
training program that would prepare students for skilled positions that are in high demand
by one of the region’s largest employers ~ the furniture industry. The program partners with a local community college and offers a series of classes including furniture fundamentals, pattern making, manual and automated cutting, sewing, introductionto upholstery, inside and outside
upholstery and spring up. Students learn the
necessary skills from
experienced craftsman within
the local furniture community. The Furniture Academy at
Catawba Valley Community College
Home Brands, Sherrill Furniture and Vanguard Furniture are all founding partners of this
program, which continues to receive accolades for their vision and commitment to working
together as a community to fulfill a common need. The Furniture Academy not only helps furniture manufacturers obtain skilled
craftsmen, it also helps support the local workforce and directly
benefits the regional economy.

EA Where To Eat
What we eat truly drives us. A dish is more than the plate that sits before you. The ingredients, their story of farm to table or the ornate spices that arrive straight from Morocco. The talent, love and true pride of the chef that has prepared a small part of his family and soul comes out in a recipe that sends your taste buds whirling. That is more than a meal. “A barrel is more of an art than a science.” - Zack Cranford, Founder Seventeen Twelve Spirits
Well crafted takes on a entirely different meaning when it comes to the art of distilling crafted spirits. The proof of the goodness of our community comes through in the taste and quality of a locally sourced bourbon or whiskey. Our farmers take pride in the crops that are used by our local distillers and the circle continues as the master distillers return the mash back to the farmers for their animals and land. We invite you to pull up a chair, sit back and relax with a great spirit in hand and savor the tastes of the Hickory Metro straight from the barrel. Like any Carolina gentlemen, Zack Cranford and the late Tim Weaver, founders of Seventeen Twelve Spirits,, were raised in honesty, pride, and taught to pursue their dreams. These core principles and values are sustained today at the distillery. 1712’s mission is to forge honesty and pride into the art of distilling, while supporting a local economy. From grain to glass, each batch is made from
100% North Carolina grains, using their own hands in processing and bottling. The healing properties of South Mountain water and the family legacy of four generations of distillers have formed the foundation of South Mountain Distilling Company . Owners Company. Owners Don & Dawn Smith take pride in their family legacy and in being the first “legal still” in the Burke County area. Triple distilled using “Ole Bessie #4” — still named after Don’s grandmother — the three plate system is an homage to the triple distillation process of their forefathers. Some chase a few defiant moments - others live a lifetime in the spirit. The Defiant crew behind the stills are salvage divers by trade. In diving and in whisky, greatness is not coincidence. It is cultivated,
pushed, practiced and always evolving. Rethinking whiskey by taking the best of Scottish tradition and combining it with American ingenuity, Blue Ridge Distilling Company is starting a whiskey revolution. Warehouse Distillery is the first whiskey distillery in Newton, NC, offering a rye whiskey, a bourbon whiskey, and a maple flavored whiskey. In true family and entrepreneurial style, this familyrun operation, launched in 2015, is expanding its distillery one bottle at a time. Family recipes passed down through generations, hard work and dedication to the genuine love of the craft - our distillers understand the passion and care that it takes to create something remarkable. We are proud of our distilling heritage from the early years of moonshine runnin’ to having the honor of being home to North Carolina’s first bourbon.

frothy pint of well crafted local beer has come to be a staple in cities around the globe. The Hickory Metro is home to some of the best, but hey - we are a little biased. If you don’t believe us though, taste it for yourself. With Olde Hickory Brewery being the second oldest brewery in NC, we were brewing in Hickory before it was cool. Olde Hickory is one of many in the area that are sourcing local farms, but did you know that they are also using old whiskey barrels like Macallan and other well-known distilleries to add unique and crisp flavors to their pints? If you are into a more fruity

or earthy notes finish, look no further than Fonta Flora Brewery in Morganton. They are well-known for their unique and unconventional brewing process with roots, plants, and fruits. Last but certainly not least, you have surely seen the unique “White Zombie” tap at many local North Carolina restaurants representing the Catawba Brewery in Morganton. Be sure to ask your grocer or local bottle shop if they carry Catawba’s “Peanut Butter Jelly Time.” You will thank us later! You are sure to get a true beer experience here in the Foothills of NC.

Lenoir-Rhyne University students take advantage of all that the City of Hickory has to offer. Nestled in North Carolina’s foothills, the city provides everything from outdoor activities to a plethora of dining options, shopping, entertainment, events, and more. The university and student body presence and interaction within the community promotes school pride as well as strong partnerships. Working alongside of business and community leaders, LR continues to enrich Hickory with educational, commercial, and cultural opportunities.
Hickory, NC | Asheville, NC | Columbia, SC | lr.edu
The Future of Hickory Hickory is a city with a focus on the future and the desire to build a stronger Hickory for tomorrow. Known as a great place to call home or to visit with numerous parks, trails, and access to outdoor recreation, cultural activities, and crafted spirits for all. Most importantly, Hickory has hard-working residents who are good neighbors and who shape friendly communities welcoming visitors from all over the world. Hickory’s creative, industrious spirit is reflected in a legacy driven by invention – and reinvention – to make life better. Work ethic is the heart of our community: if it can be made, we’ll make it. If it can be improved, we’ll improve it. And if we can do it together, it’ll be the best it can possibly be. We appreciate where we’ve been and look forward to where we’re headed.
Plans for the City Walk and Riverwalk are creating upbeat conversations with locals and visitors and will keep the momentum of Hickory’s positive growth moving forward for decades.
Mandy P. Hildebrand, CEO
Hickory Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau
“Smart Asset” listed Hickory in the Top 10 Best Places to Raise a Family.
Did you know?
We have 186 miles of shoreline, a major river, and three lakes in Catawba County alone! The Catawba River originates in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina and flows through Lake James, Lake Hickory, into the Lake Norman reservoir and tapers off into northern South Carolina.
Change is Coming We are a community that celebrates our legacy, preserving a strong sense of place and honoring the traditions that inform our future. The City Walk will be a pedestrian friendly connector from LenoirRhyne University’s campus through the heart of Downtown Hickory and will continue the great work that has taken place in the Mill District redevelopment. Almost two miles of City Walk will offer a great location for runners, walkers, bicyclists and connect to the downtown streetscapes projects as well as the Riverwalk along Lake Hickory. The Riverwalk — Hickory’s first on-water, ADA accessible, boardwalk experience — will curve along the shoreline of beautiful Lake Hickory. A mile long, the walkway will extend from Highway 321 to Geitner-Rotary Park with plans in the future to offer watersport rentals and public dock access- stroll, run, swim, boat or bike your way to outdoor adventure.
With streetscape updates coming soon to give downtown a fresh look, our highway thoroughfares and intersections will offer a more culturally appealing presence with art and sculptures welcoming and inviting travelers, visitors and locals. We take pride in our community and these subtle changes will represent our commitment to community enrichment and investment.
