Dare to Design She’s captured our hearts, and wardrobes, with her stellar brick prints and feminine designs. Still only 29-years-old, Olivia Rubin is a fashion force to be reckoned with and has built up a profitable business to boot. But what makes her tick? Words: Nicole Rapaport
Why fashion, in particular women’s wear? With women’s clothes, I’m designing for myself, which is half the fun. At secondary school I started to develop a keen eye for prints and patterns. I went on to complete a BA in Fashion Print at Central St. Martin’s, and completed various work placements along the way, so the path I wanted to take became pretty clear to me in my early 20’s. What has been the high point of your career? There have been many high points it’s hard to pinpoint just one. The few that instantly spring to mind are my first London fashion Week show at the Science Museum, moving into my South Molton Street studio, and getting accepted into a top Paris tradeshow. I was also voted by RED magazine as one of the UK’s most influential women in fashion which was rather nice. What can we look forward to from you for the rest of this year? I’m expanding my collections for AW11 with the launch of a new knitwear range and I have a few exciting collaborations in the pipeline. This year we’ve seen you designing an exclusive collection for Dune shoes. How did you find the footwear designing process, and how does it compare to clothes? I enjoy working with new brands especially in areas that are new to me. I learned a lot about the accessories market and got to experiment with the Dune range, whilst still putting my signature Olivia Rubin stamp on the shoes, However women’s wear is what comes naturally to me and is my predominant passion. Any other interesting collaborations coming up? I am currently looking into jewellery and nail polishes - but I won’t give away too much at this early stage. You sell your clothes online and in boutiques. Where would be your ideal place to sell? I’ve built up a really strong list of independent boutique stockists over the years, some that have stocked my label since my first season. It is satisfying to know that I have a strong and loyal customer base. The next stage for me is to get into a department store, and I have to say Selfridges is at the top of my list. And on the international scene? I’ve already started to expand internationally. I am already stocked in a chain of boutiques in Japan and have recently been accepted into Paris trade show which will hopefully grow the brand profile within the European market. You create beautiful garments; from dresses to casual tees. What would you say your personal style is? Feminine and chic with an individual edge. I like to mix up styles from day to day while still trying to look polished. I think I’ve cracked it!

What has surprised you most about this industry? Not much! Having a lot of internships under my belt I knew what I was getting myself into-the stress, the competition, the long hours, and the catty behaviour. It’s all there; I just keep myself grounded and concentrate on the primary goal of building my brand. Do you enjoy the retail business side of your job? I’ve grown to enjoy it. When you start a business even in fashion design you quickly come to learn that it is primarily a business, and therefore a lot of the time is concentrated on selling and making money. I definitely have a hunger inside that drives me. What advice would you give an up and coming designer? If you want to start a fashion label try and have a unique selling point. I knew that my background in print and textiles was just that, so I have built on that strength and made it the core of the label. Who has given you the best advice in life so far; business or otherwise? A business mentor said to me “Turnover is vanity, Profit is sanity”-that has stuck with me. Another one that is a bit of a cliché but nevertheless I still believe in is ‘Never give up’ You have a lot of celebrity fans. Would you say that this endorsement is a must if you want to succeed? I wouldn’t say it is a must but it would be ignorant to underestimate the power of celebrity today. When the right celebrity wears one of my pieces (say Cheryl Cole, Fearne Cotton or Jaime Winstone) it has a snowball effect on press and then sales. It’s a win-win situation. The recession has taken its toll on the retail world. Have you experienced hard times this past year, and how you intend to maintain a profitable business, looking forward? Of course in this climate I have to be constantly looking at new ways of selling, remaining competitive and introducing new appealing products. I’m always trying to come up with new ideas and projects-having that sort of weight on my shoulders definitely makes me more ambitious. Where is your favourite fashion destination and why? I love New York as I think it always had something new to offer. Every time I go I end up finding a different fashion boutique or restaurant. There’s just so much to explore. When not furiously jotting down design ideas, what can we catch you doing? I’ve recently got into training and running in Hyde Park. It’s the perfect escape at the end of a busy day at work. What are the three most important things to you in life and why? Family, friends and boyfriend and my label. They are the only things that have real importance in my life. What’s your guilty pleasure? TV-you name it, I probably watch it; the more cringe-worthy the better! Where do you see yourself in five years? Still growing the label, stocked in top UK department stores and around the world and starting to launch my own chain of shops in London.

Despite being a fabulous place to eat The Harwood has very much kept its character as a pub even retaining the much loved pub quiz on a Tuesday evening, which has been held for last 20 years!
The Harwood Arms was reopened in 2008 as collaboration between Brett Graham of the famed Ledbury restaurant, Mike Robinson of the acclaimed Pot Kiln pub in rural Berkshire and Edwin Vaux from the famous Vaux brewery who have brought the life back to this old Fulham Favourite.
New for 2011 Mike and Brett together with master butcher and game dealer Alan Hayward are setting up an online business that will allow customers all over the country to enjoy the amazing produce served at the Harwood and the Potkiln.
The idea was to use the best of Berkshire game and wild food to create an unpretentious country pub in the heart of London. The results speak for themselves as within two years The Harwood Arms had earned the first Michelin star awarded to a pub in London and more importantly a legion of appreciative locals who loved the unpretentious atmosphere and excellent but simple and good value food that the establishment offers.
The online business, which will specialise in selling properly provenanced Venison and wild game, will be launched this summer. This will mean that for the first time, everyday people, outside the restaurant industry, can buy the best wild produce in Britain, prepared and butchered [ as it would be for a restaurant] for their own homes. Wild game is the healthiest meat available - Venison for example has no cholesterol, is almost entirely fat free, is
sustainable and traceable in origin and represents exceptional value for money. Many people don’t realise that we have six species of wild deer in the UK. All the deer taste different owing to their slightly different habitats and diets and are completely wild. They know the age and provenance of every deer sold at the Harwood & Potkiln because they are all shot by Mike! He personally selects the animal to be culled so as to ensure the prosperity of the herd and to keep the deer numbers on the estates he manages to acceptable levels.
