From the Editor

Weddings are exciting - deciding whether to use long-time traditions or to make new ones, choosing colors, fl wers, and decorations, and connecting with friends and family are a few of my favorite parts. When my oldest daughter announced her engagement, I introduced a tradition I hope she’d carry forward. Over 23 years ago, I put my wedding dress in a box hoping my baby girl would want to use it some day. My oldest daughter, Victoria, was over thte moon when I told her I saved it for her. Wedding Planning 101

(Family Features) First comes the proposal then comes the wedding planning. There are dozens of decisions that need to be made before it’s time to walk down the aisle, which can be overwhelming for brides and grooms. To help make it less stressful, these tips from Macy’s can help couples through the entire wedding-planning process, from on-trend apparel and accessories for the entire wedding party to all the essentials to create a perfect registry. Dressing the Ladies When it comes to bridesmaid dresses, the mix-and-match approach is trending in popularity. Start by deciding on a color palette, such as lilac, champagne and petal pink. Then have each bridesmaid choose her favorite style within that range of hues. Bring it all together by choosing a uniform look for makeup, shoes and accessories. There is no better time to thank the ladies than the morning of the big day. A few thoughtful gifts can go a long way, such as matching robes, tumblers to stay hydrated throughout the day and cosmetic cases to stow makeup essentials. Dressing the Gents Similar to bridesmaid dresses, groomsmen attire can be dependent on the venue and overall event aesthetic. While a suit can fit the bill for a country club wedding, a city affair may call for the sleek finishes of a tux. Tuxedo accessories, such as cuff links or bow ties, make great groomsmen gifts and are classic pieces they can use time and time again. Creating the Perfect Registry When building a registry, it’s never too early to start. People want to give gifts as soon as they know a couple is engaged. Start by taking inventory of what you already have, what you need and what you want to upgrade. It’s also recommended to update the registry regularly so there are enough gifts to choose from, especially if there is an engagement party and bridal shower coming up. To get started, some popular registry items include stand mixers, craft beer glasses, Dutch ovens, bath towels and vacuums. For extra guidance, couples can speak to advisors who can help with the full registry building process at Macy’s stores.

7 Steps to Plan a Remodel spotlight on Elaine Montgomery

R

ealtor, Elaine Montgomery has been in the real estate industry for over 20 years. Born and raised in Springfield Missouri, she has visited a lot of places, but has have never wanted to live anywhere else. Elaine met and married her wonderful husband, Joel, and together they have four children and six cherished grandchildren. Her two sons live and work here in Springfiel . Elaine and Joel are truly blessed that four of their grandkids still live here also! Meeting new people and helping them find their new d eam home is her driving force. “There is No Place Like Home!” And home is the Ozarks for Elaine and her family. Elaine is dedicated to helping home owners sell their homes. Homowners often ask her about remodeling, which can add value to your home or make it more attractive to new buyers. (Family Features) Remodeling your home can be one of the most exciting projects to undertake. Whether you’re thinking about a bathroom update, kitchen overhaul or a new room addition, planning and setting realistic expectations are critical in ensuring your project goes as smoothly as possible. Consider these steps from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) before you get started:

1

Determine your goals and needs. Understand why you are undertaking the project, whether it’s for resale value or so you can enjoy your home more. If looking to increase resale 8

value, consider the neighborhood and potential upgrades that can have the highest impact when going to market. If remodeling can make for a more comfortable space, create a list of “musthaves” and “nice-to-haves” then evaluate what’s feasible. Being realistic about needs and wants can help you create a budget.

2 3

Get inspired. Whether watching home improvement shows or browsing the internet, finding pho os of styles and looks you admire can be beneficial when sha ing your vision with a remodeling contractor. Understand your budget. Setting a budget and staying within it is critical to the project’s success. Be sure to build in a contingency fund for unforeseen expenses. Project expenses should factor in the cost of products, labor and project management. There are also possible additional costs such as long-term maintenance, repairs, energy use and a dining out budget if undergoing a full kitchen remodel or hotel costs sometimes necessary with large-scale projects. To avoid any unpleasant surprises, be sure to get a written estimate and scope of work once you’ve selected a contractor.

4

Determine timing. If there is a specific e ent driving your remodel, work backward through the various project stages to determine a realistic timeline. Build in additional time as a buffer for unexpected delays and recognize remodeling contractors typically have long lead times and may require fl xibility to deliver optimal results.

5

Find a contractor you trust. Home remodeling can be stressful no matter how well you plan, but a dependable partner can make the process go smoother. While some of the best references may come from neighbors, friends or family members, a trade association like NARI can help with its online “Find a Remodeler” tool. Make sure any contractor you’re considering has several years of relevant experience, as well as liability insurance.

6

Check references. When it comes to remodeling your home, you can never be too careful when choosing who to work with. Be sure to follow up on references, read reviews online and even check out the work of any remodelers you’re considering hiring, if possible.

Prepare for the process. Regardless of the size of the project, there will almost surely be inconvenience, noise, dust and potential delays. Your daily routine will most likely be disrupted. Because it can be especially stressful when redoing the kitchen or an essential bathroom, you’ll probably need to consider a backup plan or other arrangements throughout the duration of the project. Remember to also declutter the work area and protect or pack away any belongings that might be in the way during the renovation. More tips for planning a remodel at RemodelingDoneRight.com.

THANK GOD FOR SECOND CHANCES

A

good friend, whom I love dearly, said, “You aren’t going to get married again, are you?” I said an emphatic, “No, of course not!” And I meant it at the time. I am a loyal person who takes marriage seriously. don’t think most people go into a marriage thinking, “Well, if this doesn’t work out, I can always get a divorce.” Although, I have, on occasion, heard people say that.

I

We don’t say that about other experiences. We don’t say, “You aren’t going on another diet, are you?” “You aren’t going to have another child, are you?” “It hasn’t worked out for you very well in the past. Surely you will finally give up!” The unspoken message is that you aren’t worthy of another try. You’ve blown it. Don’t even think of trying again! Of course, marriage, dieting, and parenting aren’t the same. Who are we to point out the mistakes of others who are most likely already going through a tough time? We don’t know every detail of what happens in a person’s life. I’m an optimist. I try to learn from my mistakes and sometimes I do. I am remarried now for nine years to a wonderful man. We are friends first. Maybe that is one thing I learned – that it is important to be friends first. But whether it is a failed relationship, yet another diet, or a decision to have another child, I think it’s important to remember to focus more on love than on judgement. I may be more cautious, but I would rather be cautiously optimistic than a person who never tries again after hurt or disappointment. There are no guarantees in life, but, thank heaven, there are always second chances. END FOOD STRESS: GAIN FREEDOM AND CONFIDENCE Have you been on more diets than you can count? Is food causing you stress or guilt? Do you feel confused about how or what to eat?

It’s that time of year. People are swearing off s eets, trading potato chips for kale chips, counting macros, and jumping on-board the latest fad diet train. We say things like, “This is the year I’m going to be healthy. I’m going to finally s op eating emotionally, overeating, and yo-yo dieting.” Spoiler alert, it’s probably not the year! Over 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail. So why do we keep making them year after year expecting different results? Unless we start approaching eating in a radically different way, this year is not going to be the year either. If I asked you why these New Year’s resolutions fail you might say it has to do with will-power, but surprisingly, it has very little to do with willpower and a lot to do with our bodies’ biological response to depravation. Our bodies see depravation as a threat to survival and respond by lowering metabolism and increasing cravings for calorie rich foods. Your body doesn’t know that you made a New Year’s resolution. It thinks that your land is having a famine and it’s going to do everything it can to help you survive. When you’re around calorically dense foods, your body will scream at you to eat as much as you can while it’s available. This may sound pretty hopeless, but there is hope! That’s why I’ve created my free online class, “Food Peace.” Visit my website to sign up and learn how to make this the year you win the battle with food.
