From the Editor This is my family.
Well, most of them, anyway. We’ve experienced divorces, disagreements, losses and new additions. We’ve also experienced births, weddings, anniversaries and reunions. Through it all, I treasure every moment from special holiday gatherings to random drop-bys and calls. Because of losses we’ve endured, I am more greatful for the moments we have together, and the holidays are a reminder to treausure these moments. A time to share stories. A time to laugh. A time to remember. Exchange give gifts... or not. Most importantly, you do you. Do what’s right for you this year, and don’t concern yourself with what others think about it. Every family is different, and when life sends changes, roll with them. Be present in the moment and enjoy the experience at hand. You never know when life’s going to throw a change your way!

JUDY’S HATBOX…A NEW TRADITION
M
y friend Judy pulled out her flowered hatbox. She opened it up so all of us could see the goodies nestled inside. Candles, framed quotes. A heart-shaped trinket. A pocket mirror. Gifts of all shapes and sizes. Judy didn’t travel the world, but she makes a world of difference! She shops in her community all year and picks up gifts that tickle her funny bone, speak to her heart, or calls out one of her friends’ names as the perfect gift for Christmas or the next birthday. Judy shared that she keeps her hatbox filled so she always has the perfect gifts for her family and friends. The women at the retreat left with ideas for their own hatbox. But Judy’s hatbox didn’t start out as Judy’s hatbox. It started with Jean Marie, her friend from years ago. Her friend, Jean Marie, had a drawer full of gifts of all kinds. Judy carried on her tradition but kept it in a purple and blue, flowered hatbox. You could use a drawer, a hatbox or an organizer tote to do the same. Many of us order online. It’s convenient, and there is nothing wrong with that. But the experiences you have when shopping local shops is a treasure in itself. Each shop has its own ambiance. You can touch, explore and discover in a way that you can’t online. And you are helping the local community and women-owned businesses. It’s a win-win situation! There are many wonderful places in Springfield and Author, Paula Shumaker O’Donnell the Ozarks, too. You might consider a certificate to a local writes “Monday Motivation” theatre such as Springfield Contemporary Theatre, Juanita for businesses, individuals, and K. Hammons Hall or Springfield Little Theatre. The Zoo publications such as “Guideposts isn’t just for kids either. When was the last time you spent Magazine,” “Mysterious Ways,” “Angels on Earth,” a day at the Dickerson Park Zoo? There are a variety and “Woman’s of options locally. It may be a cliché, but it really is the World.” Visit thought that counts. her website at “It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put theworldneedsyou. into giving.” Mother Teresa com or email Merry Christmas! END FOOD STRESS: GAIN FREEDOM AND CONFIDENCE Have you been on more diets than you can count? Is food causing you stress or guilt? Do you feel confused about how or what to eat?
It’s holiday season, which means lots of parties and food! As a dietitian, I often get new clients in January telling me how guilty they feel for “overeating” in December. How many times have you “overate” in December and told yourself that you would be “good” in January? This is when I introduce a lifestyle called Intuitive Eating. Once you learn Intuitive Eating, you’ll be able to say goodbye to the cycle of overeating, guilt, and depravation forever. Here are some tips to get started. 1) Tell yourself that you can still eat the foods you want in January. What?! Why?! Because anticipated deprivation leads to overeating. It’s normal to overeat when you think you won’t be able to have your favorite foods again. 2) Ask yourself how you will feel after eating. We’ve all had that unpleasant overstuffed feeling at some point in our lives. Stop at a point when you’re comfortably full because you want to feel good, not because you “shouldn’t eat that much.” Remember, you’ll be allowed to eat those foods again. 3) Don’t let yourself get overly hungry. It’s a busy time of year, so it’s easy to miss a meal, but being overly hungry tends to lend itself to overeating as normal biological response. 4) Work with a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, like myself. Intuitive Eating goes much deeper than hunger and fullness and most people need individualized support to end the dieting cycle forever. Reach out to me for your free 30 minute session. Three Easy Home Tips for Curb Appeal (Family Features) Whether you’re hoping to sell in the near future or looking to touch up outdated areas, one aspect of home maintenance most homeowners agree is important: curb appeal. It’s a broad term that may reference any number of visible features, meaning there are plenty of ways to enhance the appearance of your house. Consider these ideas for bringing new life to your home’s look from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Swap Out Your Front Door As one of the first things a guest, passerby or potential homebuyer may notice, the front door is the gateway to your home and a likely opening impression. Upgrading to a heavier, bolder door or simply repainting the existing threshold can capture positive attention. Alternately, swapping out hardware for a more eye-catching look is an easy way to achieve a fresh facelift. Create Seating Areas A welcoming home is typically an attractive one, and there are few better ways to create a cozy vibe than a seating or gathering area on the porch. Whether it’s the classic porch swing or chairs and a coffee table suitable for the outdoors, a small zone ideal for conversation and camaraderie can help create an at-home appearance. Rethink the Mailbox It may not be as exciting of a project to undertake, however, giving your mailbox a fresh look helps it stand out and – especially if it’s directly in front of your
home – may turn an ordinary object into a worthy attractant. Your work may be as simple as updating to a newer model or as thought-out as constructing a small rock wall around the base. For More ideas to increase curb appeal, or to find a certified remodeler near you, visit RemodelingDoneRight.com.

EveryDay Extraordinary: Local Heros For the 19th Amendment As we near the 2020 anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote, it’s a good time to look back at how a couple of local women advocated for this basic right. Fanny Crenshaw, whose portrait is held at the Springfield Art Museum, was known locally as a pioneer suffragist who advocated for “votes for women” since before the Civil War. One day Fanny, along with four other women, decided that as taxpayers they had the right to vote. They went to the polls to vote on a local tax levy, but were turned away. Undeterred, Fanny continued to advocate for suffrage until her death in January 1919. Though there had been suffrage Connie Yen is a Springfield local writer and archivist with a passion for history and telling stories. She is the author of two published books, her most recent “ Sinner and Savior: Emma Molloy and the Graham Murder.” More at geneahistory.com
work in Missouri for decades, it wasn’t until 1914 that the Political Equality League of Southwest Missouri was formed. Mary Easley presided over the advent of the first such organization in this part of Missouri. Their first plan after formation was a petition for a constitutional amendment granting universal suffrage. Mary Easley circulated petitions and curated a newspaper column dedicated to suffrage news. In early 1919, Missouri passed a presidential suffrage bill giving women the right to vote in presidential elections. Then, in June 1919, Congress finally passed a suffrage amendment, requiring ratification from thirty-six states before becoming law. Missouri ratified the amendment on July 3, 1919, becoming the eleventh state to do so. The tireless efforts of local women such as Fanny Crenshaw and Mary Easley helped make suffrage possible.
