WELCOME | AWARDS & JURY

ALOHA

As the vanguard forum of international cinematic achievement in the Asia-Pacific region, HIFF endeavors to recognize new and emerging talent, promote career development and original collaborations through innovative education programs, and facilitate dynamic cultural exchange through the cinema arts. We do this by presenting a bold and eclectic program comprised of the best films from Asia, Oceania, North America, and Europe (thanks to the generous support from HIFF’s ‘festival within a festival’ partner, EuroCinema Hawaii). HIFF has historically been a window to worlds unknown and “where strangers meet.” Thanks to support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Arts and Shangri La, HIFF’s New Frontiers Program explores the diverse global Islamic communities through media arts. This exciting new program will be part of a larger art exhibit sponsored by Our Kaka’ako and presented in partnership with the new Honolulu Biennial Foundation (HBF). Now in its 8th year, the New American Filmmakers Program, presented by the Vilcek Foundation, will once again highlight the contributions of gifted immigrant filmmakers to contemporary American cinema. Films from six talented, cutting-edge, foreign-born artists will be featured; a master class with the leading filmmaker in the group will be open and free to the public. HIFF is particularly proud to present films made in Hawai’i, with two world premieres, RISE OF THE WAHINE, directed by Dean Kaneshiro, along with the HIFF 2014 Closing Night film, VISIONS IN THE DARK: THE LIFE OF PINKY THOMPSON, directed by Sundance Lab alumnus Ty Sanga. HIFF is also pleased to support The Hawaiian Media Makers Conference, presented by Pacific Islanders in Communications, which will empower our community, delve into the work we do using a cultural lens, and build ideas for the future of media in Hawai’i. The 3rd annual Creative Lab at HIFF, co-presented by HIFF and the Hawai’i State DBEDT Creative Industries Division, and further supported by the City & County of Honolulu and the Honolulu Film Office, will once again provide a series of exciting keynotes, master classes and accelerators for the professional development of Hawai’i’s creative entrepreneurs. Every year, the cost to present such world-class programming continues to rise, but thanks to the continued and vital support from our sponsors, like our Key Presenting Sponsor, Halekulani, the numerous HIFF Ohana members and private donors, countless volunteers, the passionately loyal audience members who stand in long lines to have their “HIFF moment”, and the tireless dedication of the HIFF staff and Board of Directors, we are able to carry on providing a unique experience for our island community and also showcase to the world what amazing talent we have here in beautiful Hawai’i. On behalf of the HIFF Board of Directors and the HIFF team, we extend our warmest mahalo nui loa! See you at the movies!

HALEKULANI GOLDEN ORCHID AWARD

PRESENTED BY HALEKULANI The Golden Orchid is bestowed upon the narrative and documentary films that best express artistic and technical excellence and promote cross-cultural understanding. And like the rare endemic orchids of our native Hawaii, these awards recognize singular achievements amid collective beauty. Each nominated film furthers the Hawaii International Film Festival mandate to entertain, enlighten and empower. Our two juries will select the films that articulate this manifesto consistent with the cross-pollination of words, ideas and images that comprise the kinetic and visceral power of film. THE VENUES (WHERE DOES ALL OF THIS HAPPEN?) The Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18 serves as the main hub of the Hawaii International Film Festival. Most screenings will take place there with some other screenings, workshops and events taking place at satellite venues. Here is a list of all the HIFF venues this year:

ATTENDING AN EVENT TICKETING

THE EVENT LAYOUT

(I'VE ORDERED MY TICKETS, HOW DO I GET PHYSICAL COPIES IN MY HAND?)

(WHAT DOES THE FESTIVAL LOOK LIKE?) There are lines created for three films at a time. Each film has three lines (four if a film is indicated as “Rush”) and therefore you will see nine lines at Regal Dole Cannery at any given time. There are signs to indicate what films are ready for line up. *Layout is for Dole, Ward, and Koko Marina theaters only.

You will need a printed ticket to enter the theater, and you have several options on how to get them. Will Call: If you've placed an order for your tickets and purchased them over the phone, you will have received a confirmation from us. Your ticket orders will be waiting for you at the box office. Print over the Internet: For the ultimate in convenience, you can buy your tickets online and print them from home. These tickets (you'll recognize them by the bar code and film title) are valid for admission to the theater. Buy tickets in person: We will have a box office facility on site. Walk in with a plan for what films you want to watch and walk out with tickets in your hand. The box office is in the lobby out front of Dole Cannery Theaters Stadium 18.

LINES PER FILM

P – PASS HOLDERS LINE. This line is for persons with Lifetime Membership, Platinum Passes, Flash Passes, and Priority Line tickets. M – MEMBER TICKET LINE. This line is for persons with Member Line Tickets. An “M” on the ticket indicates that you stand in the Member Line. G – GENERAL PUBLIC LINE. This line is for persons with tickets that are not HIFF Members. A “G” on the ticket indicates you stand in the General Public Line. RUSH – Standby line for persons without tickets who wish to see a ‘Rush’ screening. Ticket availability is first come first serve.

Pinky Thompson thought bigger than himself and further than the single cause at hand. He fought hard against the stigma of an inferior Native Hawaiian. A multifaceted cultural identity was the key to their ultimate survival. He championed a health care system, created invaluable educational programs and strengthened the pride of Native Hawaiians. He envisioned an ideal Hawai‘i that no one else saw and fought for it from the battle fields of Normandy, down the steps of congress, to his humble home in Niu valley.

TICKET PRICES: The Hawaii Theatre screening will include a $3.00 additional HTC Restoration fee. VISIONS IN THE DARK: THE LIFE OF PINKY THOMPSON closes HIFF 2014 and it is apropos to celebrate the life of this great figure in Hawaiian history by presenting the world premiere at the Hawaii Theatre Center. His legacy lives on through his work as a social worker and community leader, including his leadership posts at Kamehameha Schools and the Polynesian Voyaging Society.

Since the 1930s, Chinese men have played this streetball game in the alleys and parking lots of Chinatown. At a time when laws like the Chinese Exclusion Act forced them to socialize exclusively amongst themselves, nine-man offered fraternity for men who were separated from their families. Pivoting between Chinatown parking lots and jellyfish-filled banquet scenes, the film captures the spirit of nine-man as players both battle for a championship and fight to preserve a sport that holds so much history.

A Hong Kong version of GRAND CANYON, ABERDEEN examines the myriad challenges facing the Cheng family comprised of an aging model, an adulterous doctor, and a self-help guru who thinks his daughter may not be his own because she is “ugly.” ABERDEEN focuses on universal struggles-infidelity, aging, identity, bullying, unresolved grievances with the deceased. Yet Pang never allows his characters to wallow in their hardships, bringing his particular brand of self-aware comedy to the proceedings.

Determined to stop a new gas mine near her Sydney home, director Anna Broinowski goes to North Korea to learn from the masters of propaganda cinema.

After a botched arrest in a grisly serial murder case, small-town detective Zhang Zili is suspended from the force, taking a job as a security guard. Five years later, another series of mysteriously similar murders takes place, and Zhang recruits his former partner to finish their investigation. Part film noir, part social realist portrait of industrial China, Diao Yinan’s atmospheric film is a moody, powerful thriller staged against the quotidian lives of a wintry industrial landscape.

THE BLUE ROOM begins with a series of lushly romantic, semierotic scenes, introducing salesman Julien and his mistress, Esther, as they make love while the world goes on outside. But their intense trysts are soon interrupted by the questions of an examining magistrate as the story jumps ahead in time to show Julien under arrest. This deconstructed romantic crime thriller mysteriously unfolds as the courthouse drama and the past events of the two lovers becomes clear.

Superstars Nicholas Tse and Gao Yuanyuan are best friends who first meet in a Beijing university in the 1970s. Circumstances keep them from consummating their relationship and soon enough, they live on different continents. Flash forward to the 1990s and, like star-cross love affairs, fate bring them together in New York City, when they have established lives with others.

THE GOLDEN ERA tells the epic tale of Xiao Hong, one of China’s most famous female writers and an iconic historical figure. Hong lived through some of the most turbulent times in Chinese history, surviving poverty, the Japanese invasion and the post-war period. Her tale of love, loss and poetry is beautifully brought to life by actress Tan Wei in this lush drama helmed by director Ann Hui. THE GOLDEN ERA closed this year’s Venice Film Festival.

Xu Ruining is a nationally renowned therapist incredibly skilled in hypnotherapy. But when his career takes off, he meets a patient named Ren Xiaoyan who brings him a complex problem. Despite her thin and weak appearance, Ren Xiaoyan reacts violently when dealing with her problems in therapy. He wonders what exactly makes her closed-off to everyone. While sparing no efforts to figure out what has happened, he finds himself falling into a horrible trap.

Based on true events, HAEMOO tells a gripping tale of a large 69-ton fishing boat crew’s attempt to smuggle illegal migrants in order to keep their jobs. Their plan goes terribly wrong when they meet a tragic accident while transporting the migrants amid a heavy sea fog. First time Director Shim Sung-Bo masterfully portrays individualistic greed in human nature, marking an impressive feature debut with the support of Bong Joon-Ho, who produced and co-wrote the film.

A Bollywood adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’, Haider is a young man who returns home to Kashmir on receiving news of his father’s disappearance. Not only does he learn that security forces have detained his father for harboring militants, but that his mother is in a relationship with his very own uncle. Intense drama follows as Haider learns of his father’s death and upon discovering the culprit, seeks to avenge the murder.

Inventive, hilarious cop thriller A HARD DAY is a total blast. Corrupt cop Gun-su accidentally crashes his car into a man while on the phone. Instead of calling the police, he stashes the body in the trunk. Meanwhile Internal Affairs have discovered the stash of cash that Gun-su and his corrupt team have amassed. Devising ever more elaborate stratagems to get out of the various pickles he’s in, Gun-su is in for the hardest day of his life.

South Korean master Hong Sang-soo crafts yet another delightful, soju-saturated tale of love thwarted, in this story of a heartsick Japanese man (Ryo Kase stepping in as Hong’s avatar) who travels to Seoul to attempt a reunion with the woman he still pines for. Like all of Hong’s films, these slice-of-life love tales of erudite and selfish men are fueled with circular logic, lots of alcohol and desperate gestures of lust and love.

When two teams of Taipei’s poorest high school students meet on campus one night, a war erupts. This is a war of losers and a war that makes both rivals question their destined poverty and social class. Finally, this time on the quiet night campus, the seeds of revolution planted by Dr. Sun decades ago, begin to sprout.

Sambal Goreng-a traditional dish in the Malay Archipelago-is the metaphor for the sizzle, simmer, spice and flavor of a household wherein resides a Tsunami survivor turned domestic helper who struggles to save her job and her bitter retired employer. Repetitive, yet lyrical in tone, this “cycle of daily life” is sprinkled with beautiful cinematography and enchanting music. SAYANG DISAYANG is Singapore's official foreign language entry for the 2015 Academy Awards. Director Sanif Olek will be in attendance for the first screening.

SELF MADE tells the story of two women -one Israeli, the other Palestinian- who are trapped within their respective worlds. After a mix-up at a checkpoint, they find themselves living the life of the other on the opposite side of the border. When a soldier’s mistake sends Michal to Nadine’s refugee camp and Nadine to Michal’s home in Jerusalem, the swap leads them to discover their hidden desires, inaccessible in their previous lives.

Beneath the pageant smile, sexy outfits, and colorful exterior lies the transsexuals’ day-to-day pain of achieving the ultimate goal — to be happy with themselves and be accepted. SHUNNED offers a glimpse of their struggles, battles with society, their love life, and transition to become a woman. A no holds barred look into the lives of different transsexuals (male to female), in the Philippines.

The hilarious sequel to the smash hit THERMAE ROMAE (HIFF 2012) starts off in ancient Rome, where architect Lucius (Hiroshi Abe), at the top of his game, receives an order to construct a new thermae for gladiators to rest and recover from battle. Lucius, hitting a roadblock in the concept, goes through the time slip again where he travels to modern day Japan, and enlists the help from the “flatfaced” tribe that assisted him the first time.

Directed by Real Florido, the film revolves around a simple yet unconventional love story. Corazon (Nova Villa), a recently retired government employee, crosses paths again with her first love, Third (Freddie Webb), decades after their abrupt separation. The incident rekindles Corazon’s old feelings, and presents a way out of her already monotonous marriage to Alejandro (Dante Rivero).

In the badlands of Delhi’s underbelly, Titli, the youngest member of a violent car-jacking brotherhood, plots a desperate bid to escape the ‘family’ business. His schemes are thwarted by his unruly brothers, who marry him off against his will. But Titli finds an unlikely ally in his new wife, Neelu, who nurtures her own frustrated dreams. They form a strange, mutually exploitative pact to break the stranglehold of their family roots. But is escape the same as freedom?

Japan’s Sion Sono is back with a film unlike anything you’ve ever seen before: a yakuza/street-gang/hip-hop musical epic. In a futuristic, alternate-world Tokyo, the city is made up of ghetto slums and nightclub playgrounds where gangs of wayward youth rule the streets. The city is carved up into ‘hoods, and the crossing of territorial lines quickly leads to riots and rumbles. On the turf ruled by the savage yakuza Big Buppa, the simmering tension is about to boil over into all-out war.

When their land is sold to developers, the magicians, acrobats, and puppeteers of Kathputli Colony must find a way to unite -- or splinter apart forever. TOMORROW WE DISAPPEAR is a feature length documentary about the last days of Kathputli, a hand-built artist colony hidden away in the alleyways of New Delhi. Spanning three years, the film follows Puran the Puppeteer, Rahman the Magician, and Maya the Acrobat as they approach their looming eviction.

1788 in Rudolstadt, a small provincial town in Germany. The beautiful Caroline von Beulwitz is unhappily married, longing for love and life. Charlotte von Lengefeld, her shy sister, dreams of finding a husband. The two are a heart and soul, until HE enters their lives: Friedrich Schiller, the man who wrote “The Robbers”, an overnight sensation, the espouser of proto-revolutionary republican ideals. Through the hot summer the two women compete for the same man.

At the peak of her career, Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche) is asked to perform in a revival of the play that made her famous twenty years ago. Back then she played the role of Sigrid, a young girl who disarms and drives her boss Helena to suicide. Now she is being asked to step into the other role, that of Helena. Maria departs with her assistant (Kristen Stewart) to rehearse in the remote Alpine town of Sils Maria.

Maria is 14 years old and her family is fundamentalist Catholic. Maria lives her everyday life in the modern world, yet her heart belongs to Jesus. She wants to follow him, to become a saint and go to heaven. So Maria goes through 14 stations, just like Jesus did, in order to reach her lofty goal. Not her family, nor even Christian, a boy she meets at school, can stop her.

After taking a leave of absence for health reasons, Sandra (Marion Cotillard) is soon to return to work when she finds out that her position will be cut. The only way to save her job is to convince her colleagues to give up their bonuses, and she has just one weekend to do it. The usually glamorous Cotillard melts into the film as a working class mother, in another superb social drama from Cannes winners the Dardenne Brothers.

MR. TURNER (brilliantly portrayed by Timothy Spall) explores the last quarter century of the great if eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Living a life full of abundance, Turner’s provocative and opulent life was full of controversy, as he was both celebrated and reviled by the public and the aristocracy. His eccentricities, however, paved a body of work that was incomparable.
