EDITOR’S COLUMN All roads lead to custom installation. A custom installation is the opposite of equipment fetish, equipment collection and fanboy attitude towards hifi. For once, the equipment is hidden, its identity subsumed beneath that of a greater whole. Just like ‘blind tests’ of yesteryear where the uninitiated were bundled into a room with lights turned down or even turned off and a thin curtain at one end of the room concealing a panel of loudspeakers. You are then told to listen to ‘speaker A’, speaker ‘B’ and speaker ‘C’. It was revolutionary then but a little silly in today’s context. Or is it? The elegance of a fully built in system is like a designer kitchen. All the equipment is hidden away and ditto the speakers can be concealed into the wall (or a specially built feature wall for our kind of solid wall construction). This is the sort of setup that homemakers will like – everything hidden away, easy to clean and maintain. It may not be the cheapest but the sum of the whole is definitely greater than the parts. This is the home entertainment of the 21st century at its best!

s i t a Wcuhstom insta Adding a simple 5.1 home cinema system for your new plasma or LCD TV is a relatively simple affair – you pick the set that meets your budget, bring it home, unpack the system and set-up the speakers in the respective locations – front left-centre-right and rear left and right. Hide the subwoofer in a discrete location and power up the system. The room set-up process would take at most about half an hour or less. You can spin up your DVD movie within an hour or two. llation?

A custom installation takes the home cinema and multiroom music experience to a whole new level. A dedicated home cinema room is not by any means a complex affair but you do require the services of a professional who would undertake the design, building and commissioning of the entire installation. A multi-room music distribution system requires the custom installer to work hand in hand with the builder as part of the installation have to be done in conjunction with the general interior build up at some point in time. That said, a home cinema custom installation starts with 3 things – the plans of the room you intend to put aside for this purpose, your budget and the choice of custom installer.

(A) What you want for a Home Cinema Room: A projector based system – need to take into account running of cables, the screen position and projector mounting distance to the screen. Seating arrangements must also be incorporated into the plans in case there is a requirement for ‘subwoofer effect’ components such as a ‘butt kicker’, which enhance the cinematic experience. Placement of the equipment rack, seating and lighting plans are also the responsibility of a custom installer to achieve the desired cinema-like effect. Fiber optic are gaining popularity – it has amazing lighting effects for its relatively low cost.

(B) Where do we start? The initial meetings usually involve discussions between the house owner and the custom installer. If you were building your house, it would be preferable to distinct between the interior designer/builder and the custom installer; the two should not be one and the same. There would be the need to start your discussions with the custom installer as soon as you have confirmed the interior designer and builder’s plans. This would enable the custom installer to properly draw up his plans for wiring and should NOT be called in after the designer/builder has completed

Marques of Distinction

the house. Otherwise it will involve compromises such as the inability to conceal wiring or worse, have to rebuild parts where the wiring have to be laid or even relocate doorways. In the event of a completed house, a professional custom installer should be able to work on some compromises such as building feature or false walls and ceilings to conceal the in-wall speakers, in-wall touch controls and wiring. Power points (on walls, floor and ceiling), aircon ducting and room treatment have to be properly planned. The custom installer will also provide the customer with detailed drawings of the finished room for approval and reference before work commences.

Marques of Distinction

(C) Timing is crucial The equipment list needs to be drawn out and the custom installer will schedule the availability during the construction process. Certain equipment like motorized cinema seats are custom built depending on the fabric or leather finishing required. This means they are only built when an order is received and delivery may be from a few weeks to a few months depending on the order books of the manufacturer. They are also bulky to freight by air and hence usually sea-freight which involves more time. A custom installer will take care of all these arrangements. Likewise odd sizes of projection screens have to be indented and delivery may be weeks away.

(D) The building process Once the custom installer moves in to build the room, you would expect a lot of plastering work on the walls and ceilings structure. Carpeting for the room is usually not laid out as yet till the final stages or at least till all those messy plastering work is completed. Likewise the sound and video equipment, furniture, etc is not needed at this point. Wiring once laid has to be tested for shorts and continuity and thereafter, the ends sealed to prevent damage or contamination that may affect the reliability. The room treatment such as placement of sound absorbing tiles is also done at this stage before the walls are covered over with wall fabric or decorative wood panelling. Depending on the complexity of the job, it may take anywhere from 2 weeks to a month.

Marques of Distinction

(E) Commissioning The room once completed, the equipment can then be brought in and installed in the equipment rack. The projector and screen can now be mounted. The cinema seats are placed in position and plugged in. The custom installer then proceeds to set-up and test the equipment. Once satisfied everything is in order, the job is completed and then officially handed over to the house owner. The custom install usually comes with a limited warranty period where any defects are rectified at no expense to the owner. Thereafter, a maintenance charge will apply.

Movie and

Music server In a custom installation of a Home Cinema and multi-room sound system, the custom installer would usually consolidate all the audio/video equipment in one location for easy access for maintenance. As such, a movie and music server is the primary source for the house – a server should be able to serve multiple streams of music and video simultaneously to each and every room. Having one server to do the job 24/7 means one should not scrimp when it comes to choosing a movie and music server.

Marques of Distinction

A media server must be able to perform most if not all of the following features: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7)

DVD and Blu-ray movie server Music and CD server TV and Video recorder Burn DVDs and CDs Store Pictures and do slideshows Store and distribute home videos Karaoke support

What are the criteria when it comes to making the right decision? 1) Is the server able to serve the required number of points? – eg living room, bedrooms, kitchen, cinema room, patio, etc. 2) Can the number of points be expanded for future needs? 3) Does the server have adequate storage space for all your media? 4) Does it offer Data integrity and protection in the form of RAID? 5) Does it have an easy to use Graphic User Interface (GUI)? 6) Loading of video or music from disc should be easy and effortless. 7) Able to work with any control system. 8) Low operating noise. 9) Lastly, it should be reliable working day in, day out and with professional technical support. Vidabox makes a wide range of music and movie servers to suit different needs and budget. Based on a server and client basis, Vidabox offers endless expansion possibilities. Start with a single location, say the home cinema room with an in-room server to store all your favourite Blu-ray and DVD movies.

Marques of Distinction

When the upgrade bug bites, you can then add additional server and clients for various locations in the home – all connected using ordinary Cat5e cable via a gigabit router. Each and every additional server/client adds additional storage capacity to the network, allowing your media collection to grow along with the system. All your stored media in the different server and clients can be accessed from any point giving tremendous flexibility to the system. Vidabox’s basic in-room media servers start from around S$9000 for the SLIMv2 server with a dual HDD 1.5 or 2.0 TB storage. The higher capacity LUX media server increases the capacity to 5 TB with dual recorders, which enable the user to watch a DVD or Blu Ray movie while recording another. The ultimate Vidabox server is the MAGNUM with its internal array of up to 9 TB of HDD storage. Vidabox also offers an extensive array of heavy weight solutions for multi-room music and AV applications. Fancy an 8, 16 or even a 24 HDD (each HDD with 1 TB capacity) music and movie server? Enough to store thousands of high definition Blu-ray discs, DVDs, CDs and all your other digital media like photos and home videos all in one location. Paired with compact Roomclients and RoomclientsHD, you have the perfect solution to a multi-room music and movie requirements.

Its been said, the best hifi in the world do not sound anywhere as good as a live performance. So instead of spending a million dollars on a top notch hifi system, it may be a more engaging experience to have live musicians perform right in your living room! A ‘family room’ is one place in a home where the whole family can spend time together. Today, this room is more like a home cinema room instead. Why not? A dedicated room where the kids can play their Wii/Xbox/PS3 console games or perhaps to enjoy a karaoke session and watch hi definition videos. This room fits the bill. Conceived as a family entertainment room, a large room with enough space for six cinema chairs, a home cinema cum karaoke cum gaming room would ensure this room is well utilised by the entire family. Great speakers

Speakers as we know of them, are unsightly and bulky boxes. It is only when slim and svelte enclosures start making its way into ‘Lifestyle Home Cinema’ 5.1 packages, that home makers start to regard them as an ‘acceptable’ intrusion. There are major drawbacks for such slim enclosures: speaker designers are forced to use small drive units with limited power handling instead of larger drive units with a more powerful motor system. Speaker designers are forced to make sonic compromises like relegating the mid bass to the subwoofer instead of the main speakers. This results in a weak, anaemic sounding midrange with boomy and directional bass. Looks good but unacceptable performance. What if we can make the speakers all but disappear – no matter if its normal sized or these slim and svelte speakers, yet filling the room with great sound when nary a single speaker to be seen? The answer is In-Wall speakers. C870 with grille on

In-Wall speakers are favoured in places like the US where houses are built with hollow walls and the electrical wiring and heat insulation can be embedded in. Early In-Wall speakers were used primarily for pipe in music and were of moderate quality. The growth of Custom Home Cinema Installations in the US led many renowned speaker manufacturers to offer In-Wall versions of their speaker lines. Today, these manufacturers of In-Wall speakers offer the same drive units with high quality crossovers as found in their box speakers, from the entry level all the way to their premier range. The only difference is In-Wall speakers come with wall mount frames instead of a speaker box. Being flushed wall mounted, these speakers are relatively stealthy in appearance. The front protective grilles are often high quality non-resonant plastic or even metal, which can be painted over to blend into the wall. They are usually designed to be relatively shallow, a typical 6.5 inch speaker will only need a depth of less than 4 inches.

Marques of Distinction

W690 in-wall speakers

For applications on solid walls like what we have here, it is just a matter of building a ‘feature’ or false wall with gypsum board to accommodate these speakers. Obviously you would need a builder with experience in carpentry and building gypsum walls. Proficient is one US manufacturer of In-Wall and Ceiling speakers. They offer an extensive range to suit every budget and application. The speakers are built to withstand the rigors of Home Cinema and Music applications. The LCR (Left,

Centre and Right) In-Wall speakers come with either high performance Kevlar fibre or graphite cones. The tweeters are lightweight aluminium and can be pivoted to focus the signal to the required direction. The speakers have a depth of only 3 inches making installation a breeze.

C640 ceiling speakers - graphite

Their extensive line of LCR ceiling speakers are most appropriate for houses using false ceilings. The speakers are angled downwards to direct the sound towards the listening area. The pivoting tweeters add flexibility for the custom installer to direct the high frequency signals to the listening area to improve clarity. You can use a combination of In-Wall for front and centre mounted into a false wall while the ceiling speakers are used for the rear and surround channels mounted into cornices. There is tremendous scope of flexibility as all the Proficient speakers are similarly voiced for the most natural and dynamic sound possible.

BIG sound comes from

BIG speakers

Slim lifestyle speakers can only use small drive units. Small drive units give small sound, so they can never have the same performance as full sized speakers. Unless you are talking about Proficient’s in-wall speakers, we have one of the biggest (if not the biggest) in wall speakers around! The above C1030 ceiling speaker comes with a long throw 10-inch Kevlar woofer for powerful and extended bass performance, with a 3-inch Kevlar midrange and a 1-inch pivoting tweeter. The speaker is designed to focus the sound energy towards the listening area and less on resonating the room. The Proficient C1030 is just one of the many fine in-wall and ceiling loudspeakers that offer no compromises when it comes to performance, let our speakers be heard and not seen.

If you have the space, then consider an anamorphic setup as this large screening room has a 150-inch screen. You can imagine this is a huge room in a huge house. Extensive wall panelling allows the AV system to be tucked away in one concealed corner, hidden away behind the fabric covered wall panels while a motorized projector platform enables the projector to be safely tucked away after use. Pioneer’s flagship Susano made its appearance here as is a Pioneer Blu-ray player. Speakers were Proficient’s in-wall versions and were carefully hidden behind fabric panels for the ‘no speaker’ look, yet the whole room are filled with sound to complement the powerful visual element.

The BIG Picture

Marques of Distinction

Who wouldn’t be impressed by a BIG Picture? When I stand in front of Panasonic’s 100-inch plasma (S$99999) in a chain store in KLCC, it is impressive in size alone for it positively dwarfs the already humungous 65-inch (S$12999) plasma. Samsung listed their 63-inch plasma for S$9999 in one of the chain store here is by far, an excellent buy. Philips recently launched a 55-inch 21:9 LCD TV (S$9999), though strictly for fans of anamorphic DVD/Blu-ray movies. So should you buy the biggest LCD or Plasma you can afford, assuming you have a budget in the region of S$10,000 or more? My

Marques of Distinction

advice is: there is a better way to spend that money. Here’s how. First thing to note – horses for courses. I assume you would still be spending a fair bit of time on standard definition free-to-air broadcast. Do expect it to be around for a while longer and not likely to be completely replaced by HD broadcast - at least for another 10 years or more. That’s the first problem - these lo-definition programs may look OK on a 29-inch CRT TV but absolutely atrocious on a larger display. And the larger you go, the worse it gets. Coupled with the poor quality of their built-in scalers, these spanking HD TVs are not worth anything to look at in terms of lodef programs. Understandably, the future is HD so it should not come as a surprise that plasma and LCD manufacturers do not spend too much time and money to make lo-def look good. If you would spend a lot of time on free-the-air TV programmes, a smaller LCD or plasma preferably below 40 inches will be a better bet. In fact you don’t even need a

‘Full-HD’, any ‘HD ready’ would do nicely. A HD Ready plasma or LCD will look pretty good on full HD material, maybe just a tad softer than a full HD display if you should have them side by side, if not you cannot even tell the difference. A HD ready 42-inch plasma starts from below S$1000 while a full HD one may cost just another 50% more. Take your pick. I’ll save that 50% if I were you. This would serve you well for casual viewing – off-the-air programs, gaming and even internet surfing. The only problem is – you are still looking at a box, albeit a flat one. That’s right, whether its 40-inch, 50-inch or even 60-inch, it is still ‘looking at a box’. It does not have the immersive effect like what you get in a cinema. You don’t get involved and remain a spectator. Not till you get into the realm of the 80+ inches. That will cost big money for plasmas and LCD TVs for

Marques of Distinction

the simple reason – economies of scale. They don’t sell enough larger screens to cover the cost of building the panel – a 65-inch plasma should not sell for 13 times the price of the 42-inch or a 100-inch plasma should not sell for 100 times the price of the 42-inch but it does. The only large screen option all this while and possibly for many more years to come is the projector. Of course there are the same inconveniences you have to put up with – a fully darkened room, installation of the projector, where to mount the screen, wiring, maintenance, periodic replacement of the projector lamps, etc still remains. But you get big screen for a small price, relatively speaking. Once you get past the minimum start up cost – a projector and a screen, a screen size up to 150 inch is there to be had. A projector can adept itself to any size of screen, in a small room,

a 70 or 80 inch screen can be a good start, should you move the home theatre to a larger room or move to a bigger house, all you need is a larger screen. The screen size can go all the way to 150 inches where nothing else exists. Oh, the last I heard there is a 150-inch plasma coming from Panasonic... and do you need to ask how much that cost? Projectors are becoming better, cheaper, more compact and easier to use and can simply be kept away after use. A projector based system offers an immersive and overwhelming effect on the viewer. The darkened viewing environment remove all distractions around you and then, you are there - you are no longer viewing the action but you are part of the action. The only missing element is the sense of smell. HD Ready 720p projectors can now be had for as little as S$1500 - S$2000 while a full HD 1080p starts from around $3000. An inexpensive ‘no-frills’ pull-down screen starts from around S$200 for an 80 inch while a high quality fixed screen of the same size starts from around S$1000. A high quality 120 inch fixed screen would cost less than S$2000. Now a 720p projector with a cheapo 80-inch screen can be had for less than S$2000 while a Full HD 1080p projector with a respectable 100-inch fixed screen will cost less than S$5000. Add the cost of the ‘causal viewing’ 42” plasma or LCD, you have the best of both worlds for much less than S$10000. The spare change buys a lot of Blu-ray discs from Amazon.

A comfortable chair is like an old friend, one you return to at the end of a hard day’s work to relax in and let your aching muscles soothe in the soft comfort of a well-cushioned chair. Loungers and recliners are popular for being some of the most comfortable available and are increasingly popular with home cinema fans. You would need a comfortable chair when you spend several hours each time you start up your projector don’t you?

Seating Arrangement Marques of Distinction

Before you invest in a couple of recliners for your home cinema, do consider what you are paying for. Recliners can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars each. There must be a good reason why they can differ so much. Here we offer some tips on choosing your recliners and what suits your budget best. There are two kinds of recliners – motorized or non-motorized. The motorized variety will automate the reclining action and offers a more luxurious ‘feel’ to the experience. Motorized recliners are popular for high-end home cinema as it adds that ‘special’ touch as compared to a non-motorized recliner. The quality of the seat cushions can add years of service without the chairs sagging or your butt feeling the hard metal springs after some time. This is something you need to trust the reliable manufacturers to give that quality assurance. The seat covering is also an important aspect of the seat design. Leather and high quality fabric adds to the cost but they offer better comfort and looks great even after years of service. The way the covering is sewn over the frame also has

Marques of Distinction

a bearing on the reliability. Quality stitching will hold the fabric or leather together better while the cheaper variety will use staple to hold the fabric or leather but can tear in the long run. Cheaper recliners are as such that corners are cut in areas where you cannot see, unless you turn the chair over. Cheaper seat uses easy to fabricate parts like using wood to build the sub-frame with only the reclining mechanism in steel. Higher quality chairs would use a complete metal frame which would not crack and give way after years of use. For a motorized recliner, the quality of the reclining mechanism is very important. The jerky acting mechanisms used in cheaper recliners is a turn off! A smooth acting mechanism is the results of a good design which obviously only found in high quality recliners. The use of heavy-duty motors will also add to the cost but will offer long-term reliability. Finally, a top quality motorised recliner will offer a lifetime of problem free service where cheaper alternatives may need replacing many times over.
