FORWARD
elcome to the Society of Botanical Artists 2019 show at the beautiful, spacious and creative surroundings that are the Mall Galleries, in the heart of London. We are so excited at exhibiting at the Galleries and hope that it will be the start of a great relationship.
This year marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Society; we have a new membership structure which now offers non painters as well as those just starting out the chance to join. Visit our website to see how you can become an Open member. We have also changed our Full membership to become Fellowship and separated the selection procedure from our shows, allowing artists to apply for Fellow membership twice a year. Details of this process can be found on our website and we hope to welcome some of the amazing artists who are exhibiting some stunning work at this show to become our Fellows in the future. There is now a great selection of benefits that will bring interest and inspiration to all our members. There are new awards this year too, with generous prizes from across the art world. Please do have a look at the companies that have sponsored awards on page 2; we are extremely grateful for their generosity and the awards will most certainly be well received by recipient artists, the Society has also created new awards under the title Exhibiting Excellence, in order to celebrate the variety of mediums and approaches to the amazing botanical arts that we celebrate during our Open show. Located around the galleries are cards where you can help us chose the ‘People’s Choice’ award; this is fun and gives us a fantastic opportunity to find out whose work you thought was the best in show. I would just like to say a big thank you here, we could not manage this Society or this exhibition without our generous and enthusiastic small team of volunteers and staff, our special thanks must also go to the sponsors of our catalogue, website and prizes. Botanical art has never had such a following in its history; social media has connected artists and illustrators from across the globe, where we can share techniques and styles and perhaps more importantly news on flora in distress or recovery. By sharing information this way, we hope to alert all to protect and preserve fragile species and help save precious environments and support work in their conservation; without protection of our beautiful earth we would be unable to portray and study the huge diversity of plants. Environmental issues are in our hearts and the headlines every day and without plants, both as habitat and food, so many animal species are at risk. Everything we can do to draw attention to this element of our world is so important. Many of our founding and existing fellow members have helped create a huge archive of plant studies which will continue to enlighten and educate future generations, keeping the Kingdom of Plantae foremost in our minds. Let’s enjoy this heaven of plant portraits, uniting art with nature, the best combination of them all. Billy Showell President

T
he annual SBA Distance Learning Diploma Course offers the ideal opportunity for aspiring botanical artists wishing to develop their skills to a superior level. It is open to students worldwide and provides a comprehensive study programme lasting 27 months.
The syllabus is highly structured and demands dedication from students if they are to fulfil both their potential and the Course requirements. Acceptance on the Course is by submission of sample work to the Course Director who will decide if the applicant shows an aptitude. Students will complete set assignments, which will be assessed by experienced tutors who can be contacted by telephone or email. Students will have the opportunity to meet some tutors and fellow students at the introductory meeting in the first year and at the seminar in the second year, and a graduation ceremony is held at the completion of each course. Work by current students and graduates is shown at the open exhibition of the Society. So far 648 students have gained their Diplomas, some of whom are now SBA Fellow Members. Graduates join open membership of the Society for the year after graduation. Two optional residential courses are held in Snowdonia in Wales in summer and autumn for those seeking both an enjoyable break in beautiful surroundings and extra tuition. To obtain a prospectus, registration form and comprehensive details including fees and start dates, please download from: www.soc-botanical-artists.org/education/distance-learning-diploma-course
