Highbury Highlights March 2015 National Voter Registration Day Bite the Ballot Campaign
On 5th February Highbury College’s Students’ Union took part in a nationwide campaign, National Voter Registration Day. The aim of NVRD is to raise our students’ (aged 16-18) awareness of the importance of registering to vote and why they should get involved in politics as a means of securing funding for matters that are important to them such as funding for both Further and Higher Education. We also concentrated on our Hall of Residence residents in highlighting the importance of updating their address so that they are able to vote in the next General Election. The event was promoted across our 3 campuses, we had music, free cupcakes for those who signed up to register to vote, and those who participated in our interactive activities in the College Recreation Areas.
The purpose of the interactive activities was to get students to start thinking about the issues that matter to them. One of the activities that proved very successful was “Show Me The Money”, which was aimed at getting students to work together and understand how their money is spent, and how budget decisions at government level are made. This activity has not only helped us analyse students’ attitudes but also helped lead into greater debates and more active Student Voice. As part of NVRD, on 9th February, the Students’ Union and A-Level Politics students visited the Council Chambers at Portsmouth Guildhall Civic Offices. The students took part in the Portsmouth Youth Parliament Q&A with local party Councilors . and met with the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth.
Voter registration deadline is Monday 20 April 2015. To register to vote, visit GOV.UK.

January/February had been a busy month for the Student’s Union and Student Support & Alumni Services with many trips and events being organised for the year ahead to make this a year to remember! Smoking Cessation At Highbury Campus we kicked off the month with our first of a monthly visit Portsmouth City Council Health Development Officer and their Smoking Cessation team. The aim of this drop-in session is to encourage and support our students who want to give up smoking as their New Year’s resolutions. The Smoking Cessation team will be visiting the Campus monthly to offer an ongoing support to any students throughout this academic year.
Beat Surgeries (Police) Another first for Highbury Campus was the visit from the Cosham PCSO’s, Jo Donegan and her colleagues. Beat Surgery was held on the Deck on 22nd January and 25th February, they were available to speak to students about any issues that they may have whether in College or in their wider community. The workshop activities include making finger print key rings, which proved to be highly popular among students. This will continue to run throughout the year, check out ‘What’s on’ Calendar section or email students.union@highbury.ac.uk for the next date.
Students’ Union HC Pool Tournament Possibly the most anticipated activity that we held during January/February was the Students’ Union HC Pool Tournament. It was an exciting and close tournament, with students from a variety of courses taking part. After a very exciting first round and knockout stages, Harry Game, Astrium apprentice, was crowned the winner of HC Pool Tournament 2015, beating the defending champion Jay Ralls. Harry Game, 2015 winner was awarded a brand new pool cue while the runner-up Jay received a cinema ticket.
Blue Monday At the beginning of the Spring Term, Blue Monday Party was held on the “most depressing” day of the year to perk us all up! It was a successful event. We would like to say a massive thank you to the Performing Arts, Beauty students and Ashan (Business student) for helping us run the event. We could not have done it without you!
Reading Club In February the Students Support Team at HCPC launched a Reading Club, which has been a great success. Their latest meeting was held in Blackwell Bookshop – University of Portsmouth, who kindly donated a gift package of books to each student. The group will meet on Tuesday once every fortnight at HCPC. It’s open to all Highbury students; if you want to get involved please email Joanna.Czyz@highbury.ac.uk.
Money Skills On Monday 23rd to Wednesday 25th February, Highbury College students were invited to participate in a “Food Taste Test” and “Shopping Basket Challenge” for Money Skills Week. Students undertook a “blind” food test, sampling foods from leading brands such as Heinz, Walkers, McVities and supermarket own brand equivalents, then guessing the more expensive version of the product. The Shopping Basket Challenge saw students asked to estimate the price difference between two shopping baskets full of food. One containing only branded food and drink, the other containing only supermarket equivalent value items. Students were then encouraged to consider if they could make any changes to their food shopping. Could they make a saving by swapping to the supermarket equivalent? It was a thought provoking activity that really highlighted areas where students could save some cash.
