This issue is looking towards the future with gratitude and appreciation for some of the amazing things going on in Canada within our national cannabis space. We talk high CBD hemp production in Alberta with Chelsea Cunningham, a Hemp Angels review and get a few tips from the Urban Remo himself on how to grow better cannabis at home.

With legalization rolling out on October 17th, we are constantly being asked if advertising is going to be allowed? Proposed restrictions on promotion are intended to protect youth from being persuaded through marketing or advertising to consume cannabis.

At the same time, consumers need access to clear, objective information on which they can make informed decisions about consumption.

The legislation will permit information-type promotion - in other words, factual, accurate information about cannabis products (ingredients, THC and CBD levels, etc.). Information that allows consumers to tell the dierence between brands will also be permitted. In all cases, these types of promotion will only be allowed where they could not visible by youth.

The proposed act includes restrictions on several types of promotional activities, such as:

Promotion considered appealing to youth; Promotion that includes false, misleading, or deceptive information; Promotion through brand sponsorship, testimonials, or endorsements; Promotion using the depictions of persons, celebrities, characters, or animals What will an adult in Canada be allowed to do upon the coming into force of the Cannabis Act? Adults in Canada will be allowed to legally engage in the following activities: Purchase fresh or dried cannabis, cannabis oil, plants and seeds for cultivation from either a provincially or territorially regulated retailer, or where this option is not available, directly from a federally licensed producer; Possess up to 30 grams of dried legal cannabis or equivalent in public; share up to 30 grams or equivalent of legal cannabis and legal cannabis products with other adults; Cultivate up to 4 plants in their own residence (4 plants total per household); Alter cannabis at home in order to prepare varying types of cannabis products (e.g., edibles) for personal use provided that no dangerous organic solvents are used in the process.

& BECK! For the past few years, I have worked hard to help heal myself with cannabis and my crea vity. Using Art as some use medita on, to heal the mental anxie es from past traumas and a sudden illness has really opened my eyes to the passion within other ar sts. That too, I realized, inspired me further. So when a fellow ar st in the industry caught my eye as quickly as Beck's designs had, I knew I had to ďŹ nd out more about the man behind these cartoon crea ons.

I began following him on Instagram and quickly learned how much he has influenced the cannabis industry.

Beck started his 420 career illustra ng anthropomorphic characters back in 2012 with a set of “420 Friendlies” s ckers and was most recently the official ar st for The Karma Cup. He has worked with a lot of influencers and businesses such as Tweedledoob, Sofa King Good Bakery, Earth Kisses Sky, Spaced Out, Fukashima Prerolls, The Real Cannababes and so many more to help create art s cker magic in the industry.

His work is eye-catching to say the least (I know because I personally found so many of these amazing people thru Beck and his crea ons.)

When I first met Rodger in person, it was at the Li &Co expo in Toronto this summer. Again he caught my eye, as he was wearing a bright pink shirt that read “smoke weed at my funeral”. Ever-so-

forward, I approached him to tell how much I appreciated his shirt, he told me he made it and then handed me a pack of s ckers.... I instantly envisioned him crea ng a Melo s cker!

Rodger is no stranger to the crea ve side of life. With a full background in theatrics and actually a ending a high school that he had to audi on for, it is no surprise that his characters & art work are becoming a staple in the Toronto Cannabis Community. Beck has been using cannabis for about 10 yrs now, and says it all began when he was offered a joint by some co-workers to help sustain his crea vity a er hours. “It was amazing. I had felt like a robot at work, but smoking gave me a fresh focus and the inspira on I was lacking.

I found that smoking sa vas during over me helped to keep that buzzing, fun vibe needed for crea ng while also helping to sustain my crea vity and keeping me focused on one project longer."

Although he uses it for both mo va on and inspira on, Beck s ll strays from the heavy indicas. "Give me an indica and I ain't ge ng nothing done. I'm going to play GTA and take a nap."

Rodger was inspired to turn his cartoons into street art s ckers when he spo ed a Lovebot s cker in the subway sta on. Knowing he had to have a taste of that hidden world, "Where 1 in 100 people might stop and see your work... but that's exactly who it's for. Nobody else saw that s cker, they just walked right past. That was a special moment for me."

Eventually, Rodger met Lovebot creator Ma hew Del Degan and the two hit it off immediately. Rodger quickly went to work helping M a h e w b u i l d t h e c o n c re te Lovebot army and ac ng as project manager for The Love Invasion.

With Rodger's help, Lovebot saw the front cover of newspapers, radio and TV inter views, produced collabora ons and gained interna onal recogni on (Proving again what a versa le son of a bitch Beck really is.)

One of the main reasons Rodger le his work in the TV industry was because he

felt like a cog in a machine. "If it wasn’t me, it could have been anyone doing that job. If I died tomorrow, they wouldn't miss a beat."

So far, pursuing his passion seems to have paid off. With a collec on of over 400 original and parody characters, Beck has become asked for. A recognized name. As dubbed by @nugsbunnie, "The one and stony Rodgerjames."

So, as we approach legaliza on and the end of prohibi on, what's next for Beck?

“I've got the skills to do 'legal' or corporate work, but this is where my passion is. Cartoons are fun. I'm hoping to start working on large murals and learning to ink ta oos. I'm excited to bring my work to other mediums."

Remo, what can you tell our readers about simplifying growing at home?

I think the easiest thing to do to get optimal results in growing the best cannabis is to grow in the style we call closed environment agriculture. You can see examples of this on a program I did called Lets build a grow-op from build to bud and it shows setting up a grow. What I mean by closed environment is

that is it completely sealed, there is no in and out fans we are not exchanging any air with the outside. We use either air conditioning or a chiller to control the temperatures. When you stick a bunch of lights into a closed room and there is no cooling or in and out vents you just created an easy back oven sort of speak. It's important to cool it. It's also important to throw in some de-humidification in my case I use quest humidifiers and it maintains my humidity between 40-50%. We also have a CO2 system that helps injects CO2 into our air. When we grow in an environment that is rich in CO2 you actually get accelerated growth. So lets say a normal amount 400 ppm of CO2 if you elevate that to lets say 1000 or 1200 ppm its like super charging the garden. You'll see amazing results you'll increase your yields to about 35%.

Do you have a few general tips for those growing at home?

Be sure to include a UVC light in your air handle for your air conditioner this will save you a lot of tears and problems with powdery mildew. It also treats the water so you can give it back to your plants. For any grower if you're going to start out, keep it simple. If you build a beautiful set up as I've described with the air conditioning, UVC lighting and CO2, use a big pot. Use at least a 5-gallon pail.

I produce a vegan line of nutrients for a growing line. We try to standardize it and reduce the amount of steps. We try to compress the whole thing to make it easier for the grower.

Another thing we have done is make all stacker products if you take a look at my most popular product, which is Velokelp. It is actually 2 kinds of kelp: cold pressed Pacific and Atlantic and then you have humic and fulvic acid which my competitors sell

separately and then 5 B viitamins. Comparing that to my competitors that would be like 4 different products. We've compressed it into one. I make 3 other additives. One is nature's candy, which is more than a carbohydrate. It is inverted cane sugar with black strap molasses in it as well to bring out more terpenes as well as amino acids. We also have astro flower which has potassium booster it is very concentrated also contains humic acid for the minerals. Our last product is beneficial and it is three times stronger than the original calcium magnesium stuff out there.

Are there any potential pitfalls new growers should look out for?

Take a look at the ingredients before purchasing a lot of these products. A lot of them are high in ammonium nitrate. It doesn't rinse from the cannabis as well. We don't claim to be organic just vegan but a lot of companies claim to be organic yet test really high in heavy metals.

You have a huge online presence, what do you have going on now?

I've been making videos since about 2004, I first started on YouTube in 2006. I was amongst the first group of cannabis youtubers. Back then, everyone was afraid to do it but I was federally licenced so I had no fear. It has actually progressed into a bigger thing than I’d ever thought it would be. Urban Remo is my second YouTube channel and now the biggest cannabis YouTube channel in Canada. I am more than just a cannabis consumer, I like to grow but I advocate that everybody grow their own. I started out as a patient grower and now with legalization I'm going to suggest that people grow for themselves even in the recreational market because you should be in control of your own destiny. You know what you've done to the plants, if the plant had a problem or something nasty was sprayed or not sprayed because you've done it. Not to mention the cost growing your own cannabis you're saving a lot of money.

Can you tell us about your family-oriented business model?

Who can you trust the most - your family. The thing with family is that I am not worried about any of them going away. I have a great family they get along well. My wife is the best partner in the world. She helps manage the business and social media part of it. My daughter is involved she is a genius when it comes to numbers, she handles all the finances. She's a financial analyst so she gives us that insight. My son in-law takes care of our warehouse. We all wear many hats. My son in-law is the general manager.

High! Canada Magazine had the extreme pleasure of sitting down with Alex the Chemist also known as Alexzander Samuelsson. He works for NextLeaf Solutions as lead chemist out of Vancouver BC and we were lucky enough to catch him between meetings recently in Toronto.

Tell us Alexzander, you're a chemist, what led you down the path into the cannabis industry?

After I graduated university I tried to get a job for about a year and a half.

I sent over 400 applications with cover letters, resumes with no response.

After, I went through a period of depression I was on SSRI's, anxiety medication and Aderall just to balance it all out. I was with my dad on his 50th birthday, and I decided to share a joint with him after not trying cannabis for many years. After I shared that joint with him , it literally opened up a new horizon. I felt like me again, I was giddy, I was happy; I was positive and curious again. All these things came rushing at me intensely. When you're on pharmaceutical drugs it can really dampen down your emotional state and your ability to think and experience reality. My dad had always been cannabis friendly and it was just a random act of sharing that I impulsively decided to try cannabis again after it had negative effects on me in the past. This was overwhelmingly positive and as a bored out-of-work chemist with the internet, I needed to know how does this work for me and what mechanism arises to give me this kind of relief?

Fast forward 5 years - you're considered one of Canada's top chemists when it comes to all things cannabis. You've built yourself a phenomenal social media following. You are a valued and a very respected member of the cannabis space. How did you go from sharing a joint with your dad and doing some research to who you are today?

Thank so much for the kind words! I still have a hard time processing how fast we can grow in this space. I started researching online and reading the academic papers on what mechanism makes me feel this way. Then I learned about the endocannabinoid system and learned about the compounds that the cannabis plant produces, which hit these cannabinoid receptors that are in our brain and body. Then I learned about terpenes and all the other compounds in the cannabis plant. It sparked an intense interest in this world I was never privy to before. After reading for about 6 months I have a good friend named Steven Naraine, he's been a great mentor to me in the space. He basically showed me the ropes, he brought me to my first cannabis conference in the cannabis space, he brought me to a social networking event and eventually helped me figure out a way to become an independent consultant and get contracts. One of the best aspects of the industry is the ease at which we can be mentored and to pay it forward mentoring and helping others

Do you remember what your first contract was?

Yes it was Agmedica. Helping them write their business plan, and technical documents for Health Canada application. It was a success and then I worked with Beleave on their Health Canada response letter where they needed SOP's and other technical documents written. I had also written the science chapter for Lift’s retail training course as well as other minor contracts along the way.

What other things have you been up to for the last while?

There are some definite highlights; I have to give a shout out to Dessy Pavlova she has been an incredible supporter. She gave me my first speaking role at the Edmonton Cannabis and Hemp Expo in 2017. Then I received another opportunity to speak in Calgary as well as the Toronto Lift Expo. Since then I have spoken at over a dozen conferences, events, trade shows, and been fortunate enough to be featured on several podcasts. Stay tuned there’s a lot more fun science education I’m planning for the community in the coming months.

What was Lift Toronto like for you this year?

This year was great; the previous year was probably the better one because that's what launched my career in a sense. I, with John Prentice and Scott Walters sat down and they have been incredible mentors in the space as well. We were trying to figure out a way for me to advertise myself, to get myself out there and we were thinking of different names or little gimmicks and we just decided Alex the chemist. It's simple, fun, and people seem to enjoy it.

You have a built great support network on social media; can you tell us a bit about that?

This is pretty surreal to be honest. I never thought that I would have the kind of following that I have or the respect from people in the industry. To me I'm still just, Alex. It happens more frequently, I’ll be at conferences and people come up and congratulate me on an article I’ve written or a presentation they’ve seen, it’s hard to process sometimes as it can be overwhelming if you’re not used to it. I’d say that twitter is my real game, my best advice is to let your personality shine through. People like to be entertained by witty remarks; they like to know who you are.

One of the things I love about the cannabis space is that it is always evolving. Right now I've been talking about terpenes and I recently talked about how cannabis science will inform product development by looking at the compounds the plant produces, the receptors in the brain and the body which those compounds will interact with and then isolating those compounds into a formulation so that you have specific and desirable effects. I can’t fully describe how amazing it is to be able to speak to people about what I love through social media.

You've had quite a number of successes in the cannabis space, have you run into any challenges or adversity that you have had to overcome?

Let me rewind a little bit to when I first got in as a consultant I struggled pretty hard actually, I went through a lull after the ACMPR's released in August of last year where I had a couple of contracts I was negotiating and all of a sudden they just dried up.

For about 3 months it was pretty hard just trying to make ends meet. It really challenged the thought that I could do this all on my own. Shortly after that I got a contract to go out to BC and work with some growers out there, trying to bring some science and awareness to what they were doing with their crops. It gave me a lot of experience learning the plant cycle, really understanding some of the issues in growing; it was a great learning experience. I took a contract that I wouldn't normally and I was able to get a wealth of experience. When I was in BC I also met my current CEO Paul Pederesen at a social networking event after the 420 party in Vancouver. We struck up a conversation, he liked my attitude, when he saw my talk at Lift Toronto 2017, he was like you know what we have to do a contract together and we did 2 subsequent contracts in that summer. At the end of the second contract around September of last year he said you know what Alexzander, we need someone with a scientific expertise; we love your attitude we want you to join the company full time. That to me was my biggest break and my biggest success. I came on as lead scientist at Nextleaf Solutions.

Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to enter the industry?

I would just like to explicitly state that if you are ever struggling or ever in self doubt, if you know that you have a skill, you feel it inside, persevere, ask for help do whatever you can because this industry is a dream factory. All the pieces are just moving around

you just have to go meet with them talk to them and put them together. Its not for the faint of heart or weak stomach because sometimes you'll really struggle. In that struggle if you stay true and you talk to people and are open with your needs and desires eventually something will click. I feel like I understand the saying ‘If I can do it anyone can’ as I never thought I’d be doing what I am today.

Let’s talk about what you're doing right now?

Right now we are in the stage of building our central processing facility out in Coquitlam, BC where we will process trim and low grade bud for licensed producers. We have applied for a standard processing licence and we have a goal to be the extractor for anyone who wants cannabis oil as a base product for development of oils in the current regulations or in the future regulations we'll have beverages, concentrates, vape pens, topicals, edibles, any kind of infused product you'll need distillate oil. It's tasteless, odourless and you can add it in a standardised way. I think the thing that excites me the most is that were at the beginning of this brand new industry which our central goal is to separate, isolate, and purify different compounds, terpenes, cannabinoids and to have these all on the shelf in bottles. Then formulations comes into play where if you want something more stimulating you can add the terpenes and cannabinoids and the right ratios if you want something sleepy or something to help anxiety or even medically relevant these are going to be the products of the future.

We are leading up to legalization; do you have any predictions you'd like to share?

I think that there is going to be a massive shortage of cannabis once legalization comes out. When you look at the current rates of consumption from dispensaries from across the country and the current rates of consumption from medical patients across the country and then add in the boost from people who are curious, who had never tried cannabis because it was illegal and

that was the only reason they never tried it, you're going to have a huge run on supply. There will be shortages within a couple of week's tops.

I think what everyone is looking at in terms of evaluations on why these stocks are so high is based on future potential, if that potential isn't realized through a run on supply then it might indicate that maybe cannabis isn't so popular and I think there will be a huge sell off. However I don't think that is the case. I've got some intel from some LP's saying there will be some new products out that haven't been seen on the ACMPR yet that might stimulate more investments in the space.

Is there any new research and development out right now that you're excited about?

The thing that excites me the most is when the new regulations will come in for concentrates and that will open up consumers to what is already available in the recreational market in dispensaries. Shatter, waxes, vape pens, edibles, topicals, suppositories, slow release patches, I've even seen THC infused sugar.

I'm really excited for vape pens. I found when I started smoking after 3 months, because I was a non-smoker I was starting to cough up grey stuff and that shocked and kind of scared me so I moved almost entirely to vaping and I appreciate them more because you get the desired effects. That's also what we are excited for with our extraction technology, for separating, isolating and purifying different compounds so that we can formulate different kinds of pens.

High Canada has recently had the opportunity to sit down with Chelsea Cunningham from Entourage Nutraceuticals. Chelsea lives with her family on a ranch in Alberta and they are hemp farmers. Some of the best in the country.

Chelsea can you tell our readers about your background education and training leading up to your chosen career?

My background is rooted in ranch land management and rangeland restoration; I come from an agricultural background.

Pasture lands essentially work best from the soil up. That being said I have a music and media background which is a blessing since I am a Creative. A lot of people ask me what my education is and where it comes from, my answer is not expected.

Typically they are looking for a university degree and large amounts of work from a large corporation and that is not the case with me. I myself am organically grown, I have been mentee for years, I have selected mentors and have been a big believer in the mentorship system of learning. As s young child I picked out certain characters and role models with skill sets that I admired and wanted to emulate in my own life. I didn't just ask them I hounded them. I have an incredible amount of people who have taken the time out of their busy schedule and successful lives to take the time to teach me what they know and take me under their wing. One very prominent mentor for me is Brenda Schoepp, she is an amazing leader. She breaks new ground in agriculture, cattle industry and international farming practices beyond what I have ever seen woman or man do.

What was your first exposure to cannabis and CBD? My first exposure with cannabis was through my business partner who is also my brother. I come from a faith background and believe that things were created with a definite purpose.

I’m open to each living thing sharing what it excels at in life.

This has served me well in business and also as we discover health benefits of different plants. My background of using herbs in my daily life and the apothecary style of medicine has led me closer and closer to what the benefits of the cannabis plant are. I’m not a smoker, I don’t vape often or dab but I saw a huge medicinal quality to this High CBD Hemp plant. With further investigation and seeing people's lives changing for the better, literally seeing proof in front of my face with people having all sorts of medical problems and seeing a plant take care of it directly. Now I can’t make claims for any disease directly but in my personal experience I have seen this product that I'm working with right now give people their life back. My personal story with CBD and coming from high CBD hemp is that I was diagnosed with Lyme disease 4 and a half years ago. I was in Oregon helping on a ranch and had decided to go for a run, in the high desert when I returned home, I took off my shoes and I noticed a tick. I took it out not thinking much of it as it was a very small tick. Within weeks I had the bulls eye rash, symptoms and testing. That has lead me to 5 years of research, flying to alternative health doctors and knowledge seeking. It has taught me how to really take my health and my body and equip it to heal itself. I found our conventional medical system was not treating me to an effective point when I temporarily lost the use of my arms and legs. When I say CBD gave me my life back, I am serious and committed to it. CBD gave me my mobility back.

How are you feeling now?

I am at a point now where I have been using CBD for a year. I do know that I have been using CBD for a long enough point now

that my flare ups are minimal to gone. Through a combination of CBD and Chinese medicines I'm not only at a limited symptom stage, I'm testing less and it will be overcome very soon.

Do you feel that finding out you have Lyme disease and finding out that you had to figure out a lot of your own treatment did that lead you to the path you've chosen now as a farmer testing and researching CBD? Yeah, I think that it definitely played a part but it's actually been that I am very quiet about my disease. Not because I don't want to share and help people but because I find it overshadows all else and that's what people see at times. Instead of seeing a human they see a disease. It has developed empathy with people who struggle - whether it be mobility issues - whether it be any sort of crippling disease, symptom or ailment - I now have a completely new empathy for these people. It is because of that empathy and because I have seen people who need a solution that's not going to harm them in a different way. I see it work in my friends. I see it work in my Mum. When you're eyes open to it’s potential, it is unstoppable.

Lead me up to the creation of the current business you're working on, how did you begin research in CBD and becoming a CBD grower?

I got involved directly and very hands on to the extent of setting aside my other successful businesses. I got involved with CBD wholeheartedly and it is to the credit and opportunity of my brother. He has an enthusiasm to this industry that is unmatched not only that, he has the experience to back it up with the connections and networking relationships to effectively grow and succeed in this market. He does it from a serving heart and that is the only way I would have decided to move forward in any business. He came to me and said, I know we talked about growing but how about now? We started to turn the wheels in the hopes that this might go legal. We had been talking about it for 3 years and formed our corporation at the beginning of 2018.

Can you tell us about some challenges or adversities you faced on your new path into the industry?

I had to decide mentally whether I was going to commit to the point of this becoming a thread of who I am. I knew I had to do that because I saw how much education needed to happen and how many people we could serve. There are some amazing key players already at work that I am proud to say are in the high CBD hemp industry. I aligned myself as fast as I could with them.

I believe others success is not a threat to my success but a lift to something bigger. Moving forward it set the tone to once again being a mentor and mentee position in this industry. I learned very quickly if you are willing to learn and if you are willing to watch you will then become the mentor very quickly and mentors will appreciate your work ethic. The team at Entourage is second to none. There's no way I could be running this and doing this without a incredibly capable team. I need to work with those that challenge and encourage each other.

Our biggest challenge was probably access to licensing and the other one was legality. The knowledge that if we didn’t get a change in legislation we were going to have to chop the crop down and throw it out. If legislation didn't change we would be sitting in a very different boat. People always make business complicated but it wouldn’t be worth it without them.

I give the same respect to any male CEO or grower as I would any female CEO or grower in this industry because to me it's the cheering either one on into success and that is equal for both.

Take a step back and explain to our readers exactly what you have going on here in Alberta?

Entourage Nutraceuticals is committed to developing high CBD hemp strains through research and development and taking them to a commercial level of growth where we can supply for the CBD market directly. In doing that we have a research and development facility as well as commercial farms. We are finding what works and what doesn't in Canada so that Canada can be a leading CBD supplier and that is going to change lives indefinitely.

If you had advice for other women, or forpeople entering the industry what would it be?

I believe the number 1 most important rule is to invest in your own personal development and then in others. I’ve made a habit of reading/listening to a minimum of a book a week, I put in an average of an hour and a half to two hours a day of podcasts. I engage with my family and as a priority and use my workout or personal time to fit it in.

The second piece of advice would be to be okay with quiet for a little bit each day. Its okay to go to board meetings and not contribute much verbally when you’re new. It's okay to show up and learn. It’s okay to show up and ask simple questions. Be prepared but never to proud to ask the basics. The experts have taken me on a journey of knowledge just because I was willing to ask.

What challenges have come with running your own CBD operation?

It's expensive! It’s been a blessing that were able to be where we are with the inputs we have put in but don't kid yourself, there are many challenges that have been faced and overcome. For instance, we might need a system and maybe it won’t be here till 4 weeks after we need it. We are problem solvers in this business so we will find somewhere else to get the item or build what is needed. No is only rarely an option. Our team is phenomenal but sometimes things are just out of your control and you just have to wait. Sometimes you have to accept it and understand it was a challenge for this year but it's not our last year in business. It’s being accepting of where we are at and realizing there is still more to learn.

Can you tell us more about your team?

I have an amazing team. We have a bit of crossover right now as our group of companies is expanding. We are becoming completely vertically integrated in the CBD space. What we want to see, in time, is that we are all the way from genetics in seeds to products in peoples homes. Building quality control is one of those steps building standards of practice and in this industry that is this new. This is ground breaking.

Why the grey & black markets still have a window of opportunity post-legalization In a few weeks from now, Canada will become the first G7 na on to legalize recrea onal cannabis in hopes to prevent underage use and reduce illegal ac vity. The la er will be a hard goal to meet since for now, and likely the first year of legaliza on, the laws around produc on and distribu on will be very strict. October 17th will certainly be a symbolic day for the country but it will be a while un l our government will be able to compete against the grey and black markets.

There will s ll be many advantages to buy from an illegal dispensary or dealer. Canadian Licensed Producers (LPs) are restricted in the different types of products they can sell, there is a ght cap on THC potency, and prices will be high. These setbacks make the black and grey markets formidable forces. If the government is going to fulfill their mission, here’s what will have to happen: A wider diversity of products The current law only permits dried flower, cannabis oil, gel capsules, plants, and seeds to be sold. So if you are a fan of vape pens, edibles, or concentrates, then October 17th will be just another day. The lack of product variety is a definite shor all. These products are booming in other legal markets. As cannabis enters the mainstream there becomes a greater desire to make its use more convenient and discreet. This is why cannabis vape pens and edibles are all the rage. Vape pens are easy to use, produce li le to no smoke, and are completely odourless – a great op on if you don’t want to worry about reeking of weed a er a smoke break. Edibles are even more convenient and safe to use, appealing an even wider market. And then there are concentrates.

Sha ers, waxes, resins, and the likes are extremely potent, where ac vi es like dabbing are usually reserved for the most experienced stoners. None of these products will be available in October.

While the government does plan to introduce vapes, edibles, and concentrates within the first year of legaliza on, these products likely won’t be available un l October 2019 (assuming the government will take the en re allo ed me to figure out how). In the mean me, the grey and black markets will take advantage of these products and reap the economic benefits. When the government does finally bring these products to market though, they’ll have another bear to tackle.

Li the potency cap Recrea onal users with a medical cannabis license o en complain that the highest THC products are not as strong compared to what they can get from their dealer. The government has not established a THC limit on dried flower but oils are not allowed to exceed 30 mg of THC per millilitre of bo le, less than half the potency of grey and black market cannabis, which go as high as 70 mg.

Most importantly, the products that do have the highest THC are o en the most expensive. For heavy users, the demographic that comprise the bulk of demand, this is a considerable restric on.

Price reduc on Pricing will be the biggest disincen ve for recrea onal users to buy from the white market, especially if they already have a trusted and reliable source. In the black and grey markets, the more you buy the less you pay. Sta s cs Canada reported an average price of $8.36 a gram but that drops to $5.48 when buying in bulk. [EF1] Not only will bulk discounts be non-existent with recrea onal cannabis, they’ll also be taxed. Recrea onal prices will vary between provinces. There will be a federal excise tax of $1 per gram (or 10% of the final retail price) on top of the usual 1315%. Even though some dispensaries charge tax, your neighbourhood dealer certainly doesn’t.

There’s a chance that post-legaliza on demand could exceed supply, resul ng in stable prices.

When more LPs come onto the scene, supply will be able to catch up with the demand and the average price per gram will start to decline.

All in due me As it is, October 17th is an exci ng opportunity for new users who are curious and interested to try cannabis legally. But for the serious stoners and connoisseurs, you’ll have to be a li le more pa ent. The government will have to exceed the illicit markets in product diversity, potency, and price in order to capture and retain repeated business from heavy users and secure the bulk of demand. When these barriers are overcome, experienced users will start to favour regulated outlets, bringing O awa closer to their goal of eradica ng the grey and black markets!

This issue we reviewed Big Dan the Munchies Man’s Nutella filled chocolate cookie. Big Dan the Munchies Man is a small craft cannabis edible company based in Ontario. This company was started in the summer of 2018 and has been at a number of local markets. Their products are handmade, incorporating high quality ingredients and cannabis to create tasty edibles.

The cookie has a medium large orange package with a re-sealable top and transparent oval for internal viewing and that holds Big Dan’s Nutella filled cookie. At first glance it seems like a plain bland cookie but like its name suggests, a crunchy cookie exterior hides a chewy chocolate and hazelnut filled centre that expands into a chewy, gooey delicacy. However this unique edible had the same problem that few of the professional edible makers have - a rubbery aftertaste that was an unpleasant end to a very luscious edible overall.

With a THC content of 200mg it is sure to chill out even the more tolerant cannabis user, and Big Dan’s Nutella filled cookie is easy to break up into portions for a whole week of Nutella infused fun.

A truly delicious and innovative edible with that is perfect for movie night.

I had the honor of sitting down to lunch with Danny Raposo aka The Stoner Chef Canada from Master Chef Canada and Dragons Den, this past month and his Dark Knight Phil for the most delicious Chorizo Sausage Mac n’ Cheese that I have ever eaten. Lucky enough to have him whip up this deliciousness in MY kitchen I got to watch as he prepared this cannabis infused 3cheese (cheddar/mozzarella/parmesan) pasta and pan fried Chorizo sausage and instantly my mouth was watering. He topped it off with some of his special AAA Kief all season rub, and then we sat down to give it a try. Creamy, cheesy, spicy, garlicky flavours of the chorizo and softened by the buttery creaminess of the sauce – mac and cheese heaven! The flavour from the infused cannabis coconut oil was mild with the end result feeling like a warm hug.

High! Canada Magazine was fortunate enough to get to talk to Sandra from Remo Nutrients - who must have one of the more interesting roles in the industry. Tell us about your cannabis origin story, specifically on how you got interested in cannabis and has it changed your career path in any way?

I started hearing about section 56 in around 2000, which was a proposed exemption to allow people who have a medical note from their doctor to legally grow and carry a limited amount of cannabis for medicinal use. I wrote to our Prime Minister at the time, Jean Chrétien, who forwarded my letter to the Health Minister, Allen Rock.

My cannabis journey really began in 1995, when my husband (Remo) was involved in a car accident that left him with a debilitating back injury.

I wrote of my concern of how difficult it was to find a doctor that would sign the legal paperwork. He wrote me back and told me that he supported what we were doing and that there was a program and that we should go and "doctor shop".

At that time, he was a hard-working concrete finisher and foreman at a small local company. After trying many types of prescription drugs that just made him unable to function, his doctor actually said he should consider cannabis. There was no way to get it legally at the time, so we started growing a small

I had never done that before, but with that encouragement I went out of my way to phone as many doctors as I could to find a supportive doctor. It was very difficult - even doctors who supported cannabis as medicine would not agree to prescribe

it. Eventually (after about 6 months of searching), I found one.

Once we were finally legal, I could see the change in Remo's life when we didn’t have to worry about the police coming for our patio plants.

When I did the application process and received the license back I realized I had a mission. I knew there was a lot people out there like Remo that needed to have legal access, and now that I had put in the time to do it for my husband, I could do it for others as well.

Tell us about some of the challenges and or adversity you have faced so far on your chosen path?

Initially some of the biggest challenges I faced when helping patients get their exemptions was how long it was taking for Health Canada to process the extensive paperwork, on top of the challenge of finding a doctor that will sign off on the paperwork in the first place.

Then, once that was done, there was the challenge of setting up a grow operation legally and safely – there were a lot of problems with mould and fires and cannabis grow operations ruining houses, but I knew from experience that didn’t have to be the way.

Together with my husband, we started helping people set up their grows and made videos about it – as a woman, most people didn’t take me seriously, especially back then in the early 2000s, as someone that could give them advice on growing, electrical, tent set up, etc. As time went on, the red tape with Health Canada continued to be hard to get through – license renewals (I also helped people with those) took forever and some doctors who had previously been ok with signing off on cannabis prescriptions were now backing away from it.

Despite being legal, the stigma around cannabis was (and still is) definitely still there. Fast forward to 2013: Because of court challenges and the success people were having with suing Health Canada, the government was being required to create a program to have and provide more access for patients. Their proposed solution was to have all medical cannabis come from large commercial gardens, which in turn would take away the patients’ right to grow their own medicine. The idea was that it would be safer and better if people weren’t growing in their homes. With a group of patients, we decided to put together a constitutional challenge and fight them – I set out to prove, as I had been doing for the past 10+ years by then, that cannabis CAN be grown at home SAFELY and EFFECTIVELY, and that patients should be given the option to grow at home themselves or purchase from a commercial facility if they choose.

We created the MMAR Coalition Against Repeal, for which I worked as treasurer and donated hundreds of hours of my time and assisted in raising almost $250,000 which was paid to (lawyer) John Conroy for legal costs. That was a fraction of the cost. Fortunately, we won the balance of the legal fees through the courts and were able to pay off all debt.

My involvement in that case is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but it was worth it because we were able to (at least for now) secure the patients’ rights that I’ve been fighting for, for such a large part of my life.

At the same time I was involved with the NORML women’s alliance of Canada as Treasurer and fundraiser. How did you move past those challenges?

what I was doing was the right thing. I am a skilled grower. I’ve learned by doing. Legalization is about much more than cannabis. It’s about the research that still needs to be done, that wouldn’t be being done under just a medical program. It’s also about freedom.

Advice for other women entering the cannabis industry?

If people doubt you, let that just ignite your fire and be confident in your own abilities. Find other women to support and learn ideas from. There are some organizations that unite women in the cannabis space (check out womengrow.com)

Bravery – don’t be afraid to act on your ideas Trustworthy partners – both in life and business. No one person, man or woman, can do everything alone. You are always stronger when you have trustworthy support.

NACPT PHARMA C O L L E G E P R O U D L Y OFFERING UP CANADA'S FIRST C A N N A B I S POST SECONDARY D I P L O M A PROGRAMS NACPT Pharma College welcomes its first batch of future cannabis industry leaders and officially launches its Industrial Cannabis Production Technology and Cannabis Quality Control and Quality Assurance (Graduate Diploma) programs at its Toronto campus on November 19th 2018.

The programs are Canada's first postsecondary diploma credential in industrial cannabis production technology, cannabis quality assurance and quality control. These programs will prepare students for successful careers in the country's rapidly growing cannabis industry. NACPT has selected only twenty-five students per batch from a pool of more than 100 applicants.

Students in the Cannabis Quality Control and Quality Assurance program will receive hands-on training on laboratory instruments such as HPLC, GC, Dissolution Apparatus and other major instrumentations, while gaining experience in laboratory testing, including assay, dissolution, disintegration, residual solvents, loss on dry and other chemical analysis. Students in the Industrial Cannabis Production Technology program will receive hands-on training in cultivation, extraction, and cultural practices of cannabis production, including plant nutrition, environment, lighting, climate control, pest control, and production technology.

Both Cannabis diploma programs will also provide training on the complex regulatory framework that governs the industry in Canada. "The education and training in the booming cannabis industry is essential to anyone who wants to start a business or develop an interesting career in an industry which will not be easily saturated for another century," said NACPT Pharma College president Rathi Param.

"The newly created jobs in cannabis space are in high demand and there are shortages of skilled workforce in the industry. Licensed producers are struggling to find skilled workers to fulfill their hiring needs. We're pleased today to celebrate a pioneering moment for NACPT College, and for postsecondary cannabis diploma education in Canada.”

The introduction of the program is the result of extensive consultation that NACPT Pharma College has conducted with Licensed Producers and cannabis related industries such as cannabis cosmetic, edibles, medical device, testing laboratories, research and development over the past several years. As the result of the consultations, we realized that there is a growing demand for highly skilled and expertly trained professionals to lead and guide Canada's emerging cannabis sector.

Taking for granted and playing on the racist a tudes of white Americans in the early 20th century while stoking fears of cannabis, in the 1930s a film called, “Reefer Madness,” suggested that evil marijuana dealers lurked in grade schools, wai ng to en ce children into a life of crime and degeneracy.

Since then, there has been a general trend toward greater social acceptance of cannabis by a more EDUCATED society who has seen the harm that was actually caused by the prohibi on of it. Researchers have been able to show over the last decade or so that people who are ac vely using hard drugs, know that cannabis can actually reduce the harmful effects of other drugs as well as treat many diseases from cancer to epilepsy to PTSD. Now with weeks away un l “legaliza on” takes effect, it’s interes ng to read the headlines of newspapers and online news outlets and hearing the general conversa ons taking place while taking note of the modern “reefer madness” that has begun.

Hamilton, ON is my hometown and here in what’s been dubbed the “NEW HAMSTERDAM” we’ve experienced a li le bit of the ‘wild west’ in the last couple of years leading up to legaliza on. It's true that we currently have more dispensaries than any other city in Canada, but what is more important than that is that we have hundreds if not thousands of people who are actually educated and knowledgeable in all aspects of cannabis from growing to extrac ng to dosing to prescribing and to infusing edibles. This does not include all of those professionals in the accoun ng, science, inves ng, adver sing, marke ng, IT, equipment and security fields that also factor in to the "new" cannabis industry.

However, the conversa ons around the water cooler and in social se ngs the past couple of weeks have been quite worrisome given the randomness of the ar cles recently published by the local paper (The Hamilton Spectator) as well as many other media outlets both in print and online. Two however, have seemed to be at the top of the list of the 33 cannabis related ar cles printed from September 10, 2018 - September 21, 2018 in The Hamilton Spectator. They are "Canadians who smoke pot, or work, or invest in the industry, will be barred from the U.S.: Customs and Border Protec on official" and "Pot overdoses on the rise among Hamiltonians" First of all, it's beyond me that educated, ra onal individuals would actually believe that the U.S customs even can or is going to demand copies of their investment and credit card statements in order to enter. Sure if you roll up to the customs line and you happen to be smoking cannabis or displaying it or even ac ng abnormally, you may be subjected to further ques oning and inves ga ng... BUT that is

already how it is. You do not need to disclose your financial history while traveling nor do you have to willingly disclose that you consume cannabis or work in the industry. If it's something that you feel that you can't avoid, then don't travel to the U.S or be prepared to be turned away and face a possible ban on entering for willingly being honest. BUT that is en rely up to you. Those rules are no different now than they were prior to legaliza on, and also applies to other countries as well where cannabis is illegal. So why now all the panic?

Next, the overdoses on the rise in Hamilton. Really? When did this take place? Why hasn't there been more news on this considering it would really help those geared up to prove that cannabis is harmful?! Let's start with the total amount of people who have overdosed and died from cannabis. Zip. Zero. That's according to the Centers for Disease Control and Preven on which collects data on a range of other substances, both legal and illicit, and the Drug Enforcement Administra on. Ea ng too many edibles and ge ng sick or taking a dab that was way too big and falling asleep is hardly overdosing and if needed to compare to something, alcohol does both of those things regularly to its users, has no medical benefits whatsoever, and is celebrated and marketed the hell out of without ba ng an eyelash.

to keep it away from their kids? Why are people making it seem appealing?" Well Susan, how did you manage to keep your children out of the bleach cabinet during their childhood? How did you hide your delicious red wine and co on candy flavoured vodka all this me? What about the pre y bo les of cleaning products or boxes of cookies and Cheerios (now found to contain high levels of Roundup)?

With pills being the most easily available narco c for a kid to get at home these days and opioids being an epidemic how is cannabis bad guy #1 that needs to be kept out of the hands of the public? How is it ok to have your 5year old head off to the fridge or cooler and grab dad a beer but legal aged adults consuming cannabis.....oooooh my gosh, it's the "devils le uce" all over again.

With only days away un l legaliza on, I can only encourage people to educate themselves on all things cannabis. We educate ourselves on where our food comes from and whats in it, to where it’s grown and what it's grown with, so why not with cannabis? It's going to be legal, and it's going to be something that needs to be talked about. You can guarantee that each and every one of us will be prescribed or try cannabis in some form going forward. Educate yourselves, so you can educate your children and hopefully a new genera on of people will emerge who understand that there are alterna ves to medicine, materials as well as recrea onal entertainment that doesn't have to include alcohol, abuse, pills, chemicals, addic on and death.

Reefer madness is just that, Madness. Stop. Breathe.

It was funny, as it seems like we are picking up where we left off, Greg great seeing you again! I recall when we first met that you had a passion for the industry, but how did you get into the cannabis space?

I've always been super passionate about the plant and felt it never got the credit it deserved. Also, I've always been entrepreneurial and always wanted to work on a consumer packaged good. Creating AHLOT was a no-brainer, as it's the perfect combination of my passions, strengths and understanding of the customer coming together. The other day, I realized that we've built an inspiring cannabis curation brand that solves the real customer pain point of choice. This was incredibly fulfilling.

Indeed, I love working for this industry and congratulations on your recent announcement on Sept 12th on your premiere debut Cannabis Collections! What do you think this mean for the industry?

We humbly, yet confidently believe that the Cannabis Collections: Discovery Series Vol. 1™ is an incredible innovation for the industry. Come October 17th, no matter how novice or experienced a cannabis user you are, in a new legal environment, you're going to be a new consumer, and have no idea what's going to hit you. There's going to be a tsunami of choice.

In Ontario alone, there are 32 LPs supplying the Ontario Cannabis Store, nationally there are over 100 LPs, and over 700 in the cue with endless amounts of craft and micro-producers waiting to come on line. All of these have their own brands and strains, and compounding this, are the strict federal marketing and packaging regulations, making it next to impossible to identify any brands, and resulting in a sea of sameness.

And how do you see things settling here in Ontario?

Cannabis will only be available online, so you don't even have the ability to ask a retailer or bud-tender, what they recommend. This all results in a less than ideal consumer experience, where purchasing cannabis will be like throwing darts. This can be costly both from a time and a hard dollars perspective. I've said it before, legalization is a great thing, but progress is a process. As a curation brand at heart, this problem of choice is the problem we set out to solve for consumers.
