Through an RFP process, the City contracted with Highchair designhaus to do the
exploration and initial design samples. In the map, the pink shaded area is the National Register District. The pink outline, by contrast, surrounds what we hope residents or tourists typically think of as “Downtown”.
back g r o u nd
Some of the contributing buildings in the Downtown were already individually listed on the National Register, such as the Pawtucket Times building, the Library and the Old Post Office. Some even had plaques from the Pawtucket Historical Society. Because of this, our new plaques had to work with these designations, and complement them.
back g r o u nd
Through a design process, which involved citing the signage that other communities have created as examples and a backand-forth review process on concepts, the City has chosen a scheme for eligible buildings within the newlyformed District.

Our design is a steelforged plaque, with a raised and polished surface and black-enamelled recessed background. The plaques measure 10 inches wide, three eighths of an inch thick and vary in height. Two versions are available: with or without an expanded description. These are color-texture mock-ups of the final plaque approved by the RIHPHC.

Two plaques (seen on the slide previous) will be paid for and installed by the City as examples. Plaques will be available for order to eligible building owners for between $400 and $500 each. This photo is a mock-up of a final installation. The placement of the plaque is merely a suggestion, and does not reflect input from the Library staff.

Street Sign “Hats” were designed to be placed on existing street signs within the District. Hats can be placed on streets on the boundaries of the District, or on all street signs within the District. A teal blue was selected as the color for the District. Bright and strong, the color is different enough as to be distinctive from other preexisting signage.

These “Hats” have been approved and are currently in production by Sunshine Signs (North Grafton, MA). This is a mock-up of the final sign design and placement. (These streets are used as an example and may not be labelled with hats. )

The simplicity of the design allows other Districts within the City to follow this example, and expansion of the signage may be considered if it meets with favor from residents and business owners.
Part III Proposed Wayfinding signage for navigating Pawtucket’s Historic Downtown
p r o p o s e d wayfind ing s ig nag e
The Problem: Due to the difficult-to-navigate traffic patterns in Downtown Pawtucket, many local businesses have taken it upon themselves to create signage to help customers navigate their way to their business. Over the years, this has lead to new signs being placed over or near old and outdated wayfinding. Landmarks have moved but signs have not been removed or changed to reflect that. And in some cases, oversignage is the issue.
p r o p o s e d wayfind ing s ig nag e
The Opportunity: Over the next few years, the City will have to deal with traffic issues related to the construction of a new I-95 bridge over the Blackstone River. While this is an obstacle, it is also an opportunity to set some things right. More traffic through the City means more new drivers unfamiliar with navigating downtown in order to avoid highway traffic. In addition to adjusting some traffic patterns (one-way streets), it was Highchair’s job to propose some new Wayfinding signage to replace old and outdated signs.
p r o p o s e d wayfind ing s ig nag e
A Step Back: Before we present our design ideas, it is neccesary to also present the background and parameters we needed to work within. The first step of a signage project like this is to ask: which buildings or insitutions are deep-rooted enough to use as landmarks? Our answer: The Armory, City Hall, Slater Mill, Visitor’s Center, the Library, the YMCA and Downtown Main Street. Not pictured: Visitor’s Center
p r o p o s e d wayfind ing s ig nag e
Why? The reasons why we picked these landmarks are fairly simple: 1. The landmark must be as permanent a structure or institution as possible. 2. The landmark must be distinct and recognizable, or, must be an area that is well understood by local nomenclature. 3. The landmark should be able to be used on DOTapproved highway signage

The first two criteria should be well accepted by local Visitor’s Center

More Opportunity: In conversations with the DOT, it was determined that the existing highway signage should be updated. For instance, some signs still have directions to the former D.M.V., which will eventually

be moved out of Pawtucket completely. In their review, DOT

determined that there are additional locations that could get brown or blue signs.

Traffic patterns through the City will evolve over the next few years during demolition and construction of the I-95 bridge. Suggested traffic flow is highlighted in red. This traffic flow can be achieved with wayfinding signage at the important street corners, labelled with some of the landmarks we have already discussed.
