This year, we’ve been inspired by others in so many different ways. We’ve been inspired by our clients' resilience, by the giving nature of our vendors and the creative spirit that is brought on by tragedy and hope. The Collins English Dictionary defines inspiration as “a feeling of enthusiasm you get from someone or something that gives you new and creative ideas.” From the scientific perspective, inspiration literally means “the drawing of air into the lungs.” Contemplating the two and adding my personal perspective: inspiration is the air that we breathe. It’s something we need to fill our lungs and our sails, to keep us moving, to keep us hoping and creating beauty. We know there’s something special about a mountain wedding and we’re glad you’re here. Whether you’re drawn in by the sweeping views, mountain adventures, or an intimate small-town community. There are so many reasons to be inspired and so many styles of mountain weddings.

Being a part of the creative team for this project has been such a privilege. Married in the Mountains is a true grassroots movement — a collaboration of the talented members of the High Country Event Professionals of North Carolina. I’ve been a part of this close knit mountain wedding community for more than ten years, and it’s inspiring to watch it evolve and grow into a premier wedding destination.
Married in the Mountains is inspired by the weddings we have taken part in, as well as the ones that live only in our dreams. We hope that our passion inspires you to keep dreaming when it comes to sharing your love story with your friends and family. It’s a special kind of couple who chooses the mountains as their wedding destination. Maybe you’ve chosen the mountains because you met at Appalachian State University, or maybe it’s the nostalgic feeling you experience because you grew up coming to the mountains for your family getaways. Maybe you’re lucky enough to call the High Country home. Whatever the reason, we welcome you.

Adam and I met in Tampa, Florida, and were both selected from High Point University to attend an entrepreneurship conference. Although the trip was only two days, we couldn't stop thinking about each other when we came back. We spent the following two years growing our relationship and exploring North Carolina on the weekends. Adam proposed to me in his backyard surrounded by friends and family. It was his birthday, and he hid the ring in a present he was opening.

When I, of course, said yes, he said "every year, you ask me what I wished for after blowing out the candles, well this is it." Our favorite part of our engagement shoot was laughing with Bethany. She made us feel so comfortable in our first photoshoot and captured the candid beauty of our relationship.
This photoshoot was the moment where the engagement truly set in for me and I just remember being so excited for the future. We’re so excited to tie the knot in the Fall of this year.
I went to graduate school at Appalachian State University, and during those two and a half years, I fell in love with the North Carolina mountains. The beauty and peacefulness of the mountains is unparalleled. W H I T NE Y ' S TO P TIP From Olson Design Photography
These mountains are unpredictable. We like to joke that you can experience all four seasons in one day! Wear layers, bring umbrellas and embrace the wind. Don't worry about the weather because it’s going to be beautiful, no matter what.
Professionals Weigh In We met through a mutual friend and exchanged funny, witty messages on Facebook. After getting to know each other virtually for a few weeks, I mustered up the courage to ask Carl on a date. Despite Carl being nervous, he charmed me into a second date where he won me over with his deep, meaningful insights and sense of humor. We officially started dating on Valentine's Day. In our time together, we discovered a mutual love of Marvel movies, music, games, comedy shows and especially traveling. Carl popped the question on my 31st birthday in Wilmington. We are both so excited to embark on this new journey together!

It’s important to consider the state and federal rules and regulations before you start planning. Don’t worry, there are tons of online resources to guide you along the way, including www.nps.gov and www.fs.usda.gov. First and foremost,

With the rising visitor numbers in the NC mountains, it’s more important than ever to treat our lands with respect. Please visit www.LNT.org for more information on how to protect the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
According to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, the Blue Ridge Parkway is the highest and longest continuous route in the Appalachian area. Along its 469-mile length, it provides scenic access to crests and ridges of five major ranges within the central and southern Appalachian Mountains. With dramatic overlooks and numerous trails, the Blue Ridge Parkway offers many options to capture special moments, but it is our responsibility to care for the natural beauty surrounding the parkway to ensure future visitors can enjoy the same opportunities.
“I D O ’ S ” ON THE PARKWAY •
If you’re saying I do on the Blue Ridge Parkway, you’ll need a permit. Allow at least 30-60 days for processing. Permits are not issued during the month of October, on federal holidays, or federal holiday weekends.

Make sure you know exactly what size ceremony is allowed at your specific location.
•
Think about the lighting and choose your location and timing accordingly.

Book your shoot for a weekday. Certain locations can be busy with hikers on the weekends.
•
Wear comfortable shoes. While the trails are well maintained, getting to the location you want might involve a bit of a hike.
" I D ON' T' S" ON THE PAR KWAY • Live plants of any kind, including fresh, cut and dried bouquets are not permitted. • You can’t release anything into the atmosphere including, but not limited to, balloons, butterflies, doves, or other types of wildlife. • Open flames, alcohol and amplified music are not permitted. • You cannot place arbors, stands, risers or other architectural elements anywhere on the Parkway. • You cannot place signs along the roadside or block off any area of the Parkway for your ceremony.

The snow! Snow was not in the original plan for our engagement shoot, so when we received the text from Ashley telling us to bundle up, we didn’t know what to expect. We remember being eight minutes away driving straight up the mountain, and there was still absolutely no sign of snow or ice. Within that eight minutes, it was like the world transformed from a Fall mountain day into a perfectly designed snow globe. It was just breathtaking!

Fawna Tanner We actually went to school together throughout our entire childhood and teenage years, but we didn’t connect romantically until much later. After college, we were brought back together through mutual friends, and there was no denying the connection. We got engaged on the beach in Puerto Rico in June of 2019 and moved to North Carolina together to start our careers shortly thereafter.
We are originally from the Midwest (cornfields and cows as we like to say), so the mountains are a very magical, romantic atmosphere for us.

A wedding planner is part director, part comforting friend and an expert on all things wedding. Ready with an emergency bandage or a snack, they do so much more than just planning. We asked High Country wedding planners for pointers on planning a mountain wedding. We heard from Megan Drake of The Elegant Event, Andrea Elaver and Meris Gantt of The Whole Shebang, Kelly Jones of Roan Wedding and Events, Kristine Martin of Eventmaker, Kelli Rodriguez of Embellished Events for You, Lori Overstreet of Imagine This! Weddings and Events, and Paige Ulmer of The Laurel Collective. P ROFESSION ALS W E I G H I N
It's a little different here in the mountains S OAK IN THE AREA “First things first, if you’re in the mountains, really soak in it,” said Megan Drake, of The Elegant Event. “Make a weekend out of it, and think beyond just your wedding day. No matter the season, your guests will always be up for a weekend trip to the mountains!” And while you’re here, Kelli Rodriguez, of Embellished Events, recommended that couples find ways to work with local vendors and talent. “Keep it local,” Rodriguez said. “There are so many talented vendors in the High Country to choose from, and choosing a vendor team that knows the area and knows each other makes the planning process a lot more streamlined.”
KEE P YO U R G U ESTS CO MFO RTAB L E It’s easy to get lost thinking about the decor and the food, but don’t forget how much temperature is part of your guests’ comfort. Here in the mountains, it can be surprisingly cool during a ceremony or once the sun goes down. Make sure you have adequate heat for your spaces, and consider offering complementary wraps or light blankets. Alternatively, plan for enough shade during the warmer months. Kelly Jones, of Roan Wedding and Events, said guests will always remember how comfortable they felt over the course of the wedding day. “The number one thing guests remember at a wedding is whether they were hot or cold,” Jones said.
PL AN FO R T R AVEL Have you ever planned a trip in the mountains only to find that your GPS says it will take 45 minutes to drive 14 miles? A lot of the roads in the area are two lanes of winding, beautiful inclines and declines. Andrea Elaver, of The Whole Shebang, said it’s important to account for
the sometimes tricky mountain roads when planning your wedding weekend. “You can’t get there faster than the GPS says, so you might as well relax and enjoy the scenery when traveling in the mountains,” Elaver said. P R O F E SS IO N A LS WEI GH I N
Prioritize what's most important All of our planners agreed that setting your priorities before you dive into planning is key. Lori Overstreet, of Imagine This! Weddings and Events, recommended rating the top three and bottom three elements of your wedding in order of importance. Overstreet said that you should focus on what's most important, and try not to lose sleep over the less important things. Paige Ulmer, of The Laurel Collective, echoed Overstreet and said she had seen priority order come into play in budgeting as well. She said it was important for couples to decide where they want

to allocate their budget — whether it’s in florals, food or entertainment. When they’ve decided what their priorities are, the rest of the planning process can begin to fall into place. Megan Drake, of The Elegant Event, recommended that couples stay true to themselves and their vision and not get caught up in others expectations of what the day should be. "Traditions are certainly important, but don't do things out of obligation,” Drake said. “Give yourself permission to make your dream wedding very much your own.” Doing some preliminary charting to assign value to elements of the wedding will help keep you on course.
Do you really need a planner? Meris Gantt, of The Whole Shebang, said hiring a wedding planner goes a long way towards actually have fun with the planning process. “When I ask couples, what’s keeping them up at night, eighty percent of the time they say they’re worried that they’re going to forget something because they ‘don’t know what they don’t know’ and they don’t want their friends and family to have to work or be stressed out on their wedding day. A planner's job is to alleviate just that. The sooner they become part of the process, the more you can relax and enjoy being engaged.”
P ROFESSIO N ALS W E I G H I N
Get started early Since many of the weddings happening in the High Country are destination weddings, things book up quickly. If you have your heart set on a certain vendor, lock them in as soon as you can. Kristine Martin, of Eventmaker, said meeting your vendors in person was particularly helpful. “Try to meet your vendors in person as much as possible so that you can find personalities and talent that fit yours,” Martin said. This is often overlooked, but matters in so many ways. You might love a vendor’s social media presence, but you also need to also love communicating with them.
26 •
Beyond the work of actually planning a wedding, Kristine Martin, of Eventmaker, said planners can also be useful design influences for couples who might not always know exactly what’s available to them.
“I love helping couples see all of the opportunities to truly make their wedding their own while removing all of that stress for them,” Martin said. Kelly Jones, of Roan Wedding and Events, added that a planner can save couples money in the long run by recommending the right professional for your style and budget while also streamlining your process. “I encourage you to think about a planner as one of the first vendors you choose,” Jones said. This relationship should be one that lifts and carries you through the process. So often, couples who are really talented and have a strong vision dive right into planning not thinking they need a planner, but you can only be in one place at a time on your wedding day. That place shouldn’t be adjusting a last minute floral installation or standing outside directing vendors on where to park.

Lauren and Matt discovered early on that they have a mutual fondness for unique treehouses. For their first few years together, they spent hours pouring over treehouse destinations online. One day, Matt found an incredible treehouse in the Redwoods just north of Santa Cruz, California. As soon as he saw it, he knew it wasn’t just going to be a trip to a treehouse — he knew this was the perfect place to ask Lauren to marry him. The only question was how to get her to the Redwood Forests of California without ruining the surprise. Almost a year later, he found an opening that aligned with both of their schedules and told Lauren they were taking a trip. They made it to the treehouse, and after a brief tour, Lauren sat down on the bed. Matt knew this was the moment. He got down on one knee and gave her a note that he had written telling her how much he loved her and how he wanted to go on adventures like this with her for the rest of his life.

One of our favorite parts of the day would have to be our impromptu dance party at the end of the night. I have this memory of my Mom jamming out with our little portable speaker in one hand and thinking how perfectly imperfect the day had been.
32 • ELOPEMENTS
We bungled our vows, my earring fell out during the ceremony, Matt accidentally left the tags on his suit, our pup Piper stole half of my meal off my plate when we weren’t looking, and the evening’s entertainment came from a little handheld speaker, but at that moment, we were just over-the-moon to be married.
Besides actually getting married, I think we’d both agree that our favorite moment was when we walked up the hill at Overlook and saw how beautifully the team had pulled our little picnic together – I think I actually cried when I saw it! After all the stress and emotion associated with having to postpone our wedding with all of our friends and family, seeing this magical intimate celebration waiting for us was overwhelming in the very best way.

We were already planning a North Carolina mountain vacation so we thought, why not get married somewhere beautiful while we’re there? We lived in the area for a number of years so, in a way, it felt like coming home.
Sharing a wedding with my sister was the greatest experience ever. Not many people can say they eloped, let alone shared that special day with a sibling. It was also so fun to see the confused looks on people’s faces when they saw a bride and groom walk by — and then a few minutes later saw another one! 34 • ELOPEMENTS
North Carolina is our second home. Our dad is from Greensboro and we grew up vacationing at Ocean Isle Beach. When COVID-19 hit, my sister had to postpone her wedding and then our family beach trip got canceled. My sister, still determined to get married, thought what better way to do that than eloping in the mountains.
Jesse AND Lindsey Amy AND Alex Amy and Alex met through a singles group on a cruise ship. It took three attempts for Alex to finally realize that Amy was hitting on him. The next day, they agreed to meet for breakfast and have been together ever since. When they planned a weekend getaway to Greensboro to see the Avett Brothers on New Year’s Eve, Amy was sure that Alex was going to take that opportunity to propose. Anticipating her expectations, Alex decided to surprise her by waiting until they got home on New Year’s Day.
Jesse and Lindsey met through an online dating site and had their first date at a local restaurant. A year later, Jesse proposed. Their wedding was supposed to take place in July of 2020 with a guest list of 250, but, of course, COVID-19 had other plans. They decided they couldn’t wait another year to be married and started planning a small elopement at Grandfather Mountain.
Lindsey’s sister, Amy was planning to attend as their witness, but as she was also engaged, they decided to make it a double elopement! Both couples are excited to renew their vows and celebrate with friends and family in the summer of 2021.

Erin and Andrew are both musicians. Andrew is a drummer and Erin is a vocalist and pianist. They met while living in Johnson City, TN, when a mutual friend asked them to join her band. They started dating a few weeks later. That was seven years ago and now they are married and live near the mountains with their two sweet cats.
Erin Andrew Planning a wedding during a pandemic is no joke. To be completely honest, having to let go of the plans that we were excited about was a difficult, emotional rollercoaster. Ironically, that’s also what brought me to the BEST part of our planning process: Releasing our plans and allowing the day to become a small, peaceful gathering with the most beautiful weather and joyful company. In hindsight, I don't think we could've planned a better day!
Our favorite part of the day was the general calm, warmth and love. There was a sweet peace throughout the entire day. We were blessed with a stressfree wedding — such a rare gift!
The North Carolina mountains feel like home to us, in every good sense of the word. I grew up in East Tennessee and spent most of my childhood roaming these mountains with my family. Andrew moved all across the United States in his childhood/teenage years and by the time he graduated high school, was ready to settle in one place. He fell in love with Eastern Tennessee and the mountains became a familiar, calming symbol of his newfound home.

I am drawn to the outdoors. There is a beauty and peacefulness in these mountains. I chose the yellow and white colors for the florals because they are the first colors we see as spring emerges. Yellow speaks of happiness, life and light, and we all needed this after the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. The blue represents the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Watauga River.

I imagined that our fictional couple spent their summers growing up in these mountains because they have a second home here. This couple chose the venue because of the many features it offers. A view of Grandfather Mountain, the rushing river, the cypress trees that reminds them of their travels to Italy and the reception hall which reminds them of a cottage in the French countryside. I imagined our couple getting engaged in Cinque Terre, Italy, among the terraced lemon orchards overlooking the seaside and celebrating with cocktails made from local limoncello. The limoncello favors are a nod to this. 44 • styled sho ots

We wanted the shoot to have a natural feel while still incorporating high-end florals, rentals and decor.
Benjamin has put his heart and soul into Wonderlust Acres. He lived onsite for six years while he renovated the 1920’s era Stargazer Cabin. Each feature on the property was placed with intention.
Benjamin’s dream is for visitors to be transported back to a child-like wonder and awe through the whimsy and magic of nature.

FAVOR ITE THI N G ABOUT THE PR OJ ECT? This was my first time at The White Crow. Its crisp, clean style served as the perfect blank slate for couples looking to put their own unique spin into their wedding day.

WHAT ABOUT THIS ST Y LED SHOOT SPOKE TO YOU? FAVO R I TE TH IN G ABO U T T H E P ROJECT? Working with the other photographers was so much fun! It was awesome being surrounded by others who were just as excited to be there and capture all the details as I was. I also loved having a handful of models to work with instead of just one couple. It was a blast!
I love barn weddings, so when I found out about White Crow, I was instantly onboard. There just aren’t any other venues like it. I’m so in love with the white decor in the interior and exterior. It was as dreamy as I imagined it would be.
WHAT IS YOUR PHOTOGR APHIC ST YLE? My photographic style is light, bright and true-to-life colors. I'm known for capturing the spirit of the folks I photograph — the expressions, gestures and details that are outward expressions of our innermost selves.

My style captures candid moments shot with a photojournalistic approach combined with warm and moody editing with a little touch of funk.
I loved being able to work with others in the industry who are aligned with my values.
W H AT AB OU T THIS ST Y L E D S HO OT S P O K E TO YO U ? The sustainability concept really spoke to me. We all know how much waste is created by weddings, and I’ve always been interested in ways to be more eco-conscious.
FAVOR ITE D ESIGN EL E ME NT? I loved the place cards with the wildflower seeds built in that you can plant afterward — such a cute idea and it can even double as a guest favor.
FAVOR ITE THING ABOUT THE PR OJ ECT? The planner, Joelle. She has a great eye for detail. I also appreciated the diversity of the models she chose to feature. • 2021
Collaborative styled shoots are so important, not only because they offer a way to showcase new, exciting wedding trends and ideas, but also because they give vendors a chance to express themselves in a unique way and benefit from each other's creative energy.

WHAT ABOUT THI S ST YLE D SHOOT SPOKE TO YOU ? This shoot perfectly captured the best of both worlds scenario that comes with having a wedding in the High Country. The rugged mountain background in contrast with the elegance of the white barn set the stage for an incredible showcase of what being married in the North Carolina mountains is all about. Even on an overcast day, it's a view that is hard to beat!
FAVOR IT E THI N G ABOUT THE PR OJ ECT? Getting to work with so many amazing vendors!
WHAT' S YOUR PHOTOGR APHIC ST YLE ? Light and airy with a pop of color! I'm definitely a details kind of girl, and I love capturing all of the little moments that make a wedding day unique. I want my couples to have joyful, timeless wedding photos that will be a reminder of "the why" in their marriage for years to come. 62 • styled sho ots
Olson Design Photography I love being a part of a collaborative styled shoot. It is exciting to work alongside other photographers. It can also be such a learning moment to be able to see how another photographer creates.
WHAT ABO U T THI S ST YLE D SHOOT SPOKE TO YOU ? I am passionate about sustainability and how to incorporate that into the wedding world. I loved that this styled shoot was about showing future couples how it is possible to have an eco-friendly and beautiful wedding in very tangible ways.
FAVO R I T E TH I N G AB OU T TH E P R OJ ECT? Working with all these incredible vendors — not just for art but for the very real mission to raise awareness about sustainability in the wedding industry.
My favorite design element of this styled shoot has to be the whiskey lounge. So unique, fun and obviously relaxing. If I were to get married again, the whiskey lounge would be number one on the list.
Mountains Sea I love the concept of a bride who can’t decide between a beach or a mountain destination — so she chooses both. Seeing that concept come together was so much fun. Brown Mountain Beach Resort blends those two seemingly different worlds effortlessly. There’s a little magic in these hills. Steven and I moved here right after we got married with the thought that it would be temporary. Now we can’t imagine living, or photographing couples, anywhere else.

We photographed Amber and Kaleb’s wedding day just weeks before this shoot. It was fun capturing them as newlyweds and reminiscing about their wedding day throughout the shoot.
Many details of this shoot were green — literally and figuratively. The bride’s gown was made of upcycled fabric by Candian design company Reclamation, antique store finds were used as decorations, and natural elements replaced store-bought ones when possible.

Inspiration is breathing in. Exhalation is breathing out and releasing tension.
EXHALE T H E W E D D I N G ST R E SS It’s easy to get caught up in the swirl of expectations and focus on what you want your wedding to look like, but how do you want it to feel? What are you celebrating? What’s most important to you? It’s important to map out these intentions before you’re knee deep in the planning process.
70 •
Planning a wedding can be as joyful and uplifting as the wedding day itself. Here are some pointers for staying focused on what really matters and letting the rest flow away from you with a long exhale.
Take a few minutes to set the mood for yourself. Maybe you like candles, or a warm drink, or soft music. Whatever it is that takes you away from the external pressures and gives you space to think — do that.
Close your eyes and visualize yourself and your partner on your wedding day. What do you hear, what do you see, what do you feel, what do you taste, what do you smell? Really go there and feel all of your senses. Take a few minutes to get out of your head and into your body to
see what comes to you. Write down everything that comes to mind. Mapping out these intentions when you first start planning will create a strong foundation that you can come back to again and again throughout the planning process.

By choosing local, you’re reducing your carbon footprint, purchasing fresher flowers and supporting this exciting and colorful industry.

Want to create your own locally sourced floral arrangements? We caught up with some of our favorite local farmer-florists to see what tips they have for couples planning to create their own local and seasonal look on their wedding day.
SUSAN' S TOP TIPS • Do a practice run! Make a sample centerpiece and bouquet and count the stems so you have an idea of how much to order. • Always order more than you think you'll need. • So many photos on the internet are filtered, so take that into consideration when asking for specific colors. • Flower farmers are full of helpful suggestions and information to help you, so don’t be worried about what you don’t know.

Kathleen Joe
It’s amazing how one tiny moment can change everything.
THEIR STORY It was Halloween. Kathleen was cleaning and decorating her apartment for a big party she and her roommate were throwing that night. She was dressed casually in ancient gym clothes with a full set of curlers in her hair. She was scrubbing the kitchen when in walks her roommate with Joe in tow.
Kathleen knew that a friend was bringing over sound equipment that afternoon, but had no idea he was bringing anybody else with him. As Joe entered the room, he saw Kathleen and jokingly said “You’re a vision,” and snapped a quick picture of her on his phone. Though she was mortified, she couldn’t help but laugh along.
When Joe came back for the party that evening, Kate regally marched up to him in her Queen of Hearts Costume and demanded that he delete the photo. Joe of course agreed, saying that he just wanted an excuse to talk to her again. They felt an instant connection and spent the entire party at each other’s side. To this day, they laugh about that moment and wish they still had the photo.

Gray popped the question in Charleston on New Year’s Eve. It was a beautiful crisp night with great food and a fire outside. They now live happily in Charleston working their dream jobs and living on a quaint little swamp with their cat George.

"My father told us 'Your wedding is one day, but you will continue to celebrate for the rest of your lives.'"
They incorporated their love story into their wedding day by weaving in little aspects of their long-distance courtship. Their first dance was to the song “At Last" by Etta James. They penned handwritten letters to their guests as a nod to the letters they often sent to each other. Throughout their relationship, Roy liked to surprise Alexa with white roses so they incorporated them into their wedding day.

Tiffany Nick
We wanted a very romantic fairy tale type of wedding. There is something so breathtaking about overlooking the mountains while experiencing one of the most important moments of your life.
THEIR STORY
Tiffany and Nick lived walking distance apart growing up. They even rode the same bus. Although they ran circles around each other, their worlds did not collide until much later. In 2016, they reconnected at a gym Nick was a member of. When Tiffany walked in, Nick recognized her immediately and struck up a conversation. Tiffany didn’t know it at the time, but Nick stayed to do the workout a second time just to keep talking to her. A few days later, he reached out to see if she would be returning any time soon. She joined the gym soon after and the rest is history. 106 • real weddings
Their dream for their wedding was to have all of their family and wedding party stay together for a few days before the wedding. Twickenham House and Hall checked all of those boxes. They spent the whole wedding weekend celebrating with “Thanksgiving-style” pizzas, yoga, axe throwing and lots of drinking and dancing.
It’s so hard to pick a favorite moment. It sounds cliche, but it was such a perfect day. "We really enjoyed the photoshoot with our family right after the ceremony and especially the sunset photos with just the two of us. Ending the night with my husband playing the drums and smashing some Bojangles was a close second!"

THEIR STORY Holly and Steven met the old-fashioned way — at a bar in Charlotte. Steven bought Holly a drink and discovered the couple worked in the same firm. Despite a great conversation, no numbers were exchanged. Not one to let a good thing go, Steven messaged Holly at work the following Monday to invite her to coffee and the rest is history. Over the next five years, the couple was sometimes together and sometimes apart with multiple cities
I believe the North Carolina mountains chose me. "The mountains are home, and on one of the most significant days of my life, there is nowhere else I would rather be. The mountains offer a sense of beauty, serenity and safety that you cannot find anywhere else in the world. There is a sense of magic in the way the clouds settle on top of the hills, the way the sun sets over the horizon and the way the stars sparkle in the night sky. "

and job changes between. Like all great love stories, they found their way back to each other. No matter the time or distance, they always remained in each other’s hearts and minds, making them true believers that, "if it's meant to be, it will be." Steven got down on one knee and proposed to Holly during the Summer of 2019 at the Jardin de Tuileries, in Paris, France in the middle of a heatwave. Steven and Holly made the best of it and cooled off with champagne at the Ritz.

"My dream vendor team! Because of the pandemic, we had to rearrange our plans of an elopement in Italy to an intimate wedding in the North Carolina mountains. Because of COVID-19 restrictions at the time, a full catering staff was not an option, so we had to get creative. We decided to create a beautiful southern picnic basket for each guest. With the help of Roan Wedding and Events and Reid’s Catering, my dream, inspired by Central Park and Paris, became a reality."

"I will never forget being with my mother in the bridal dressing room before the first looks. It was just she and I in silence as I was trying to process my building emotions. I could hear the vendors setting up, my bridesmaids laughing outside, I knew my soon-to-be husband and his friends were playing beer pong in their parlor across the way. Even though there was so much happening, it was just us — Mother and daughter.
I never realized how intimate the moments are before you begin your walk down the aisle.
Mom knelt down and helped me put on my shoes as if I was a little girl again in a dress and needed her final touches of security to fasten me in to face the world that day. As she finalized my shoes, she looked up at me and said, "I'm so proud of you, you are the most beautiful bride." It was such a simple yet, symbolic moment of her unconditional love and unwavering support. I'll never forget it."

Melissa Jay
THEIR STORY Melissa and Jay met while working in the Appalachian State University cafeteria. They like to joke that Jay came over to Melissa’s apartment and never left. After college, Melissa started work at The F.A.R.M. Cafe — a Boone restaurant with a pay-what-you-can model. Jay decided that was the perfect place to propose. Melissa is self-admittedly very hard to surprise, but Jay definitely succeeded. She looks back on their story fondly saying, “it was so special to have that moment memorialized at a place that is near and dear to my heart.”
Melissa walked down the aisle to “Call It Dreaming” by Iron and Wine. Their dog, Roxie, was their ring bearer, and Melissa wore a necklace that has been passed down through the women in her family for generations.
The North Carolina mountains are our home! The mountains have had such a huge impact on our lives. It’s where my husband and I met, where we found our community, and where our hearts will always be.

It was also so endearing to watch friends and loved ones arrive. I couldn't help but poke my head out a few times to wave." Jay "Seeing Melissa walk down the aisle for the first time and also watching the clouds and rain dissipate right before the ceremony."
