Blowing Rock
R
omance… intrigue… star-crossed lovers… The Native American legend that gave the Blowing Rock its name is a mystifying story of two young lovers from opposing tribes – one Cherokee, one Catawba – who were destined to be together. During a secret rendezvous at the edge of the John’s River Gorge, the young man, believing that the fiery sky of the spectacular sunset beckoned him back to his tribe, became conflicted about his destiny. Torn between his love for the maiden and loyalty to his people, the brave leapt off of the large rock formation upon which his lover stood. The young woman, distraught, called upon a higher power to bring her beloved back into her arms. The mighty winds of the gorge swept him back to her, and the name “Blowing Rock” was created. Around the mid-eighteenth century, the settlers of the Virginia and Kentucky areas discovered that the Blowing Rock area was the home of abundant wildlife and healthy soil for growing. Such a fertile region drew many farmers and hunters for permanent residence. Coupled with Blowing Rock’s “discovery” by Moravian Bishop August Gottlieb Spangenberg, this prompted visitors to begin making the trek to the area to enjoy the dazzling mountain views, cooler climate, and peaceful atmosphere. Blowing Rock came into its own shortly after the end of the Civil War, as families began to settle in the safest places possible. The town was chartered and incorporated in 1889, with a population just exceeding 300. Tourism was an obvious course of development for the area, with natural beauty at the top of the list of fabulous attributes. Lodging and entertainment facilities began to prosper, and Blowing Rock became the town that it is today, with 1500 permanent residents and summer residents exceeding 8000. No one could resist the charm, elegance, radiance, and hospitality of the town of Blowing Rock!

urrent day Blowing Rock is a place of elegance and charm. The hospitality and natural beauty that brought settlers so many years ago remains, while the small town atmosphere has grown and changed with the times. The community is welcoming to visitors and provides endless activities and events, in addition to all of the sights and attractions. Many travelers are drawn to the inherently leisurely pace of the Southern mountain environment, which lends a full sense of relaxation and escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life in the “big city”. The climate of the area is enticing to many who live in warm regions. The population increase in the summer months is largely due to the comfortable temperatures, lingering in the 70s for the majority of the time. In the winter, the temperatures are also mild, rarely getting far below “freezing”, but staying cold enough to support several area ski slopes. There is so much to enjoy in the village of Blowing Rock, from renowned art galleries and quaint boutiques to celebrated dining establishments and charming bed and breakfasts. Memorial Park downtown is the home to a fabulous playground and recreation center for children and the young at heart, as well as a community swimming pool. Most days there are bubbles floating mid-air down Main Street,, only adding to the almost surreal atmosphere of small town beauty. The Mariam and Robert Hayes Performing Arts Center offers performances from national and local acts. Frequent and unique festivals grace the streets and establishments, including the Blue Ridge Wine Festival, Winterfest, Art in the Park, Gallery Strolls, Symphony performances, and Concerts in the Park. Blowing Rock is also in very close proximity to Merlefest, Appalachian Summer Festival, the Woolly Worm Festival, and many others. Many attractions draw visitors to the area, both natural and man-made. The Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mountain, The Blue Ridge Parkway, and innumerable other outdoor attractions are close by. Blowing Rock is also close to Tweetsie Railroad, Mystery Hill, plenty of gem mines, and other fun family activities. There are more hiking trails than anyone could imagine, waterfalls to discover, horseback riding adventures, rock climbing and bouldering opportunities, and great white-water rafting expeditions. Visitors to Blowing Rock return time and again, to visit their favorite shops, restaurants, and overlooks. Each visit to the area offers new opportunities for adventure and relaxation.

“HOUSE RULES”
WE WANT YOUR MOUNTAIN VACATION TO BE AS RELAXING AND CAREFREE AS POSSIBLE, SO PLEASE TAKE TIME TO REVIEW OUR RENTAL POLICIES. WE WILL BE HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE. RESPONSIBLE PARTY The person in whose name the property is reserved is responsible for all occupants complying with rules, policies, and procedures. LIABILITY FOR DAMAGES Besides normal wear and tear, damages to property and its contents are the responsibility of the tenant during occupancy period. LONG DISTANCE PHONE CALLS Phones are provided at select properties and all local calls are free. Please use a credit card or call collect for any long distance phone calls. Failure to comply will result in a $5.00 charge per call + cost of call. ENTRY We reserve the right to enter the property during reasonable hours for any purpose connected with the repair, care, or management of the property. SUBSTITUTION We reserve the right to substitute accommodations if circumstances require. OWNER’S CLOSET Any locked areas or closets are the owner’s personal areas and are not included in rental. CLEANING Housekeepers provide a general cleaning to each property. Tenants are expected to wash all dishes, comply with trash rules, and leave the property in the same condition as found. Any extra cleaning will be deducted from the security deposit. WHAT TO BRING As a convenience to our tenants, linens and towels are provided in ALL our rental properties. There is no additional cost for this service. However, tenant is expected to pay for any damaged or missing linens. Paper goods and cleaning supplies are not provided in our rental properties. Tenant must furnish these items.
PET POLICY Pets are allowed in select properties. If you have a pet you wish to bring, please advise us during booking. We will make every effort to find a property that allows pets. An additional pet fee of $60.00 plus tax will be required. CANCELLATIONS Tenant has the option to purchase Trip Interruption Insurance, which covers many reasons for cancellation. If insurance is not purchased, and tenant must cancel for any reason, we cannot refund any prepayments you have made. CHECK OUT Check out time is 11:00 am on the last day of your reservation. Keys must be returned to rental office; failure to do so will result in a $10.00 charge per key. A WORD ABOUT THE WEATHER Our mountain weather can be quite unpredictable and totally out of our control. We can have rain and fog at any time of the year, and you MUST be prepared for snow and icy conditions during the winter months (AND sometimes late fall and early spring). So come prepared to drive in winter weather to your vacation rental. REFUNDS WILL NOT BE GIVEN DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER! MISCELLANEOUS While we try to remedy problems in our control as quickly as possible, refunds will not be given in the event of breakdown of appliances, electronics, construction taking place in area, power/cable outages, or tenant dissatisfaction with decor or furnishings. * Prices, terms and inventory subject to change without notice.
