BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS 2014 ISSUE

The most breathtaking and exclusive destination resort in the High Country nestled at 4400 feet, offers a true private sanctuary. Just minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, the estate has over 400 acres of park-like grounds and is surrounded by a beautifully manicured lawn with spectacular mountain views for a ceremony site or reception. The manor boasts more than 10,000 square feet of exquisitely finished living spaces designed for entertaining. Just steps away is a spacious guest cottage. Together, the estate can accommodate 40 overnight guests comfortably and offers the following amenities: a commercial kitchen; two additional kitchenettes; a spa with hot tub, steam room, sauna, and indoor endless pool; fitness facility; library with billiards; movie theater and more.  The traditional wedding last for five hours, and the bride and groom spend most of that time running from table to table. At Twickenham, your event spans 4-7 days, which means you can actually spend quality time with your nearest and dearest all together.

a letter from the

PUBLISHER High Country Wedding Guide began five years ago when I was a High Country bride excited to plan my own wedding, but grew frustrated by countless web searches to find the right vendors. I needed an all-inclusive resource, with real weddings to inspire me. I have learned so much over the years, and the greatest lesson I learned was that I needed help. A wedding can’t happen just by the efforts of the bride. She needs help. The guide also needed help in order to grow and become a better resource for brides. This year, the HCWG team expanded, and I am incredibly thankful for these special ladies who brought new inspiration. We welcomed an Art Director with a fresh, creative approach to the Guide. She expanded our print size and our online efforts with a new website and blog. This helped us define our brand and mission: to create an inspiring guide for brides that helps them feel confident in their vendor selections, ultimately planning a magnificent and memorable wedding set in the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you wish to be inspired and feel confident about your wedding day decisions, I truly hope you will choose the High Country to begin your marriage. All the talented vendors you need are right here. From big mountain views to rivers and beautiful pastoral settings, there really is no place like the High Country. These mountains have stolen my heart and I hope the same for you. I truly hope this issue will bless and inspire you, and serve as the resource I longed for when I was in your shoes.

Heather Rogers & Miah Zimmerman from Haircut 101 share some insights on the world of beauty to prepare you for your dream day and beyond. How far in advance should I wax my eyebrows for - CLAUDIA, BANNER ELK BRIDE my upcoming wedding? How far in advance should I get my hair cut and colored before the wedding? - STACEY, APP STATE BRIDE Your hair should be freshly cut and colored about three weeks before the wedding day. This will allow the cut to settle and your hair to be healthy. Your locks will hold style better and be more radiant for your day if your hair is healthy. The color will also have time to tone down and look more natural.

Should I wash my hair the day of my wedding?

- EMILY, BLOWING ROCK BRIDE

Do what is most comfortable for you, but, if you can go without shampooing for one day, do so. Your hair will style more easily if you are able to skip the wash on the day of the wedding. Most stylists will have a dry shampoo to control any oiliness.

I’m really nervous about having my hair styled for the first time the day of the wedding. Should I have a practice session with my hair stylist?

- CYNTHIA, DESTINATION BRIDE

Absolutely. Bring in lots of pictures and any head piece that you plan to be wear. The practice will allow you and your stylist to get on the same page and see which styles will look and feel the most comfortable. You will be able to see the style will last all day. This is also a great time to schedule your bridal portraits as well, since your hair and makeup will be done, and you can make sure you like the look in photos.

How do I shape my brows?

- KATIE, BOONE BRIDESMAID

A good rule of thumb is that the brows should come to the inner corner of your eye, and extend to the outer corner. The arch should be about two-thirds of the way back , curving over your brow bone. Everyone’s facial structure is different, so if you have any hesitations or questions, leave the tweezing and waxing to a stylist or esthetician who can help accentuate your natural shape.

16

The week of your event. You want to avoid waxing the day of because skin irritation may occur. A waxing lasts about 3-5 weeks, so there is no reason to wait until the last minute.

I have no lashes! How do I make it look like I have lashes for a special event? - JOY, SISTER OF A BRIDE Fake lashes! For a more natural look, we recommend using individual lashes. The full strip lashes are faster, but don’t last as long or look as real. To apply, start by curling your lashes and apply a few thick coats of mascara. You don’t want clumpy lashes, but you want them to be evenly covered and thick. Grab the individual fake lashes with a pair of tweezers, dip the ends in eyelash glue, and apply where your lashes look sparse. They come in different lengths, so they are totally customizable and easy to apply as many as you like along your lash line.

I have really sensitive, acne-prone skin. What do I do if I start to break out on my wedding day?

- SAMANTHA, WILKESBORO BRIDE

Do not pick at or irritate it! The main thing to remember is to leave it alone. Wash your face and treat the breakout with a spot treatment until it’s time to put makeup on. Wash your face again, and this time exfoliate to be sure the skin around the breakout is extra smooth. Moisturize and put on primer, then apply a green toned concealer to eliminate any redness. Finally, apply your makeup as usual.

Should I apply makeup on my face if I plan to get my makeup done professionally? - MOLLY, BLOWING ROCK BRIDE Wash your face before your appointment and make sure all your makeup is completely removed. Apply a moisturizer you like and that works well for your skin type, and the makeup artist will take it from there. Heather and Miah, true Boone natives, specialize in formal hair and makeup styling through Haircut 101. Heather has been a licensed hair stylist for 10 years and is a master stylist. Miah has been a professional makeup artist for five years.

Beautiful gowns overflow at did someone say party? on King Street, and south’s specialty clothiers in the Boone Mall. For something more simple, with a blend of comfort and sweetness, check out new local bridal designer, whitney deal.

We love how the lace-like flowering trees seem to echo the beauty of Patrice’s bird-cage veil!

The High Country abounds with a vast array of beautiful, natural settings for bridal portraits. Visit the many stops along the Blue Ridge Parkway when shopping for a location. Known for their stunning views, moses cone manor, bass lake, and grandfather mountain are favorites among brides and photographers. In Boone, check out howard’s knob, daniel boone native gardens, or even the streets of downtown Boone. Valle Crucis also offers peaceful pastoral settings along the Watauga River bank.

Bridal portraits are a tradition that have been around since the invention of the camera - and from the looks of it, this time-honored rite of passage isn’t going anywhere. They can provide some incredible perks to the wedding planning. Bridal sessions are helpful because they allow you to see the result of your planning first hand prior to the big day. Maria of STUDIO M SALON shares, “I love when brides schedule a bridal session because I see first-hand the peace of mind it brings to them to know exactly what to expect on their wedding day. There is no price too high to ensure that you feel beautiful and confident going into that day.” Bridal sessions are also a wonderful time to connect with your florist and see your potential bouquet in a mockup alongside your dress. But most importantly, it bestows a calm, unhurried timeframe to really bask in the beauty of being a bride. Because let’s face it, this only happens once in a lifetime.

Defining

STYLE

Thoughts on styling and how it can help you in your wedding planning strategies.

WRITTEN & CREATED BY Abany Bauer PHOTOGRAPHY BY Ozzy Garcia

57

There are many local wineries that can provide a stunning backdrop and add to your styling. Check out local wineries: banner elk winery,

grandfather vineyard & winery, linville falls winery, raffaldini vineyards & winery (pictured), and roaring river vineyards.

tip #1 Choose a venue that will work for you and not against you. Do you long for a garden-inspired wedding? Don’t choose a stuffy indoor location that will take you days to create an imitation garden , but instead find a real garden slathered with naturally growing heirloom roses and hydrangea so you can save your budget for other important things like your dress, or food and cocktails for your guests.

58

Rental companies such as

a&j rental and boone rent-all provide linens in every color. For vintage and reclaimed furniture to enhance the setting, check out old vintage rentals and upper barn rentals. miss match rentals provide eclectic table settings that are unique and visually appealing.

tip # 2 Think about ways to engage all five of the senses throughout your event. Have you thought about what your guests will smell when they arrive? What about what they will see and feel? Be sure that these senses are connected. Serve hot apple cider as your guests arrive for a fall fete. Place sprigs of herbs at the place setting for a meal that is heavy with those same flavors.

tip # 3 Get inspired by the beauty of your venue. The High Country has a vast array of beautiful settings to choose from. Influence the creation of elements such as your paper goods, floral and table design that echo the surroundings of the wedding locale. Doing this will make your event feel decadently luxurious and ultimately a fete they will never forget!

There are certain buzz words floating about the industry these days organic, ethereal, rustic, chic. But there is one word in particular that is sometimes easy to miss and hard to define: “Styling.” What is it? And how does it help you, as a bride? The terminology given to wedding styling leaves most brides curious, but also disconnected to the purpose and therefore its legitimacy. Styling, in short, can be defined as “the way in which something is made, designed or performed.” This can cover many areas in the world of wedding planning to help you with your budget, your overall aesthetic, and the feel that you want guests to experience during the event. Still, the number one question remains: “Why do I need to hire a stylist when I can just design everything myself?” Though most brides have a clear idea of what they want for their wedding, having a professional walk you through the process and help with the design elements makes the planning more manageable and fun. Then upon the big day, you have expert hands by your side developing the look, while you get to enjoy the day being pampered, knowing that everything is being handled for you. Stylists are also great to work alongside your photographer. Often times the photographer is so consumed by all the candid, fast-moving m o ments that the details are hard to get placed just so and captured accordingly. Stylists will team with your photographer to help create smooth transitions during the busy day and even help set up shots to get that beautiful magazine quality image that you long for!

GARDEN BLOOMS An unruly bouquet filled with peonies, garden roses, viburnum, mock orange and golden rod fills the moment with echoes of European luxury. Stop by the shops of log house florist or shady grove gardens and nursery to browse locally grown flowers that will work well with your style. Or schedule consultations with local floral designers

desi’s floral design studio, fuschia moss, millefleurs, philosophy flowers, or shay brey to discuss your options.

fter getting engaged on top of a mountain, overlooking Lake Zurich and the Swiss Alps, Tyler and Elisabeth knew they wanted a beautiful mountain view as the backdrop for their wedding day. Elisabeth grew up in the High Country, just a few curvy miles away from the Inn at Crestwood, the perfect spot for their romantic summer wedding. Many special touches made the day come to life. The happy couple “buried the bourbon” to ensure great weather on their wedding day, a tradition to honor Tyler’s home state of Kentucky. Elisabeth w o re her m o t h er ’ s lap e l pi n w i t h h e r l at e brot he r ’s i ni ti al s i n he r d re s s , o ve r he r he ar t as he r “ s o mething borrowed.” Guests enjoyed local craft beers from Tyler’s favorite breweries, and danced the night away to songs the couple collected from the guests’ reply cards. It was truly a perfect day to begin their happily ever after.

Meg and Andrew attended Appalachian State University and met through a campus ministry. When it came time to enter into wedded bliss, they knew that the High Country was the place to share their vows. They started with a vacant field off the Tanawha Parkway as a blank canvas for creating rich memories. A handmade entryway composed of old wooden doors and adorned with the proclamation “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad,” served as a backdrop and set the tone for the ceremony. Bright flowers and perfectly-paired, bold paper goods - created by the bride - were stunning reflections of the joy that God brought to Meg, Andrew, and the family and friends who shared in their celebratory day.

organ and Raun’s wedding celebration is one for the books - one filled with unique memories, quirky traditions and fun games - all taking place at Camp Sky Ranch in a ceremony-turned-1950’scamp. A few of the groom’s friends, dressed as Boy Scouts, kicked off the day’s festivities by acting as “camp leaders.” Guests were encouraged to participate in camp-style events such as a raising the flag ceremony, bugle playing and camp bell ringing - just to name a few. Guests held up wildflowers as the bride entered to Tom Petty’s Wildflowers playing on a record player. It was a fresh and fun way to have everyone be a part of the ceremony. “Even though it was about Raun and me, it felt like it was really a celebration for everyone,” Morgan, the bride explained. Both from the busy city of Chicago, Morgan and Raun wanted to get married in a place where they felt “calm and happy.” They found that in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and knew they wanted to celebrate with their family and friends as they shared their love and vows with one another. Locating their day at Camp Sky ranch filled their day with joy and laughter.

athan and Brianna were both born and raised in the High Country, with both families making these mountains their own special version of home. They knew that if home is where the heart is, then their wedding would have to be here too. They stumbled upon the perfect venue, Hugh Chapman Center, through a casual mention by a friend. The expertise of local flower guru, Sheri Furman of Bless Your Heart, helped create a rich environment - a rustic take on the classic book and film, The Great Gatsby. Many special hand-fashioned touches were incorporated into the event such as the wisteria-scented soy candles made by the groom’s stepmother, a smell that made the couple nostalgic for childhood outdoor adventures. The food, by Gatabout’s Catering provided soulful and eclectic food, a combination of the southern cooking that Nathan and Brianna remembered growing up, with with a slightly modern take on food preparation that was reminiscent of the decadence mentioned in the infamous novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The couple spent many hours attending to every detail, but the nostalgia of marrying in their hometown surrounded by family and friends will live with them for a lifetime.

h e n C l a i re be ga n d re a m i n g abo u t he r we d d i ng day, s he ke pt co mi ng back to three very d i s tinct words to describe how she wanted the day to feel: unique, intimate and meaningful. Unique started with finding the location, which they knew had to be in Blowing Rock, a town near and dear to their hearts. They started on the historic, 100-year old stone sanctuary of Rumple Memorial, and ended in the Jeffersonian-style mansion of Westglow for the reception. The intimacy of the day was captured through the joy of friends and family being nearby to jump in and help. The bride, her aunts and mother contributed colorful nomadic textiles, grass cloths from Africa, and dozens of collected treasures to create 13 unique and very personal tablescapes. Family heirlooms and accents were everywhere, but especially at the reception, and made the entire wedding more meaningful. The finishing touches of delicate dahlias, hydrangea and garden roses by the ever-talented Fuchsia Moss. The day was filled with vibrant blue skies and gloriously perfect weather - a true gift from the High Country. The dream wedding of Claire & Patrick was unique, intimate, and meaningful; and it all unfolded in Blowing Rock, North Carolina.

Ellen and Clayton’s wedding day reflected their Cinderella-style meeti n g w i t h the beauty of Chetola Resort as the setting, the wonderful weather as if sent by a fairy god-mother, and well-wishing friends and family helping to secure their wedded bliss. Ellen’s bouquet was comp o s e d of the same flowers and love knots that were carried by her own mother and mothe r - i n - l a w o n their wedding days many years prior. or Lisette, a Florida native and one mildly obsessed with fall foliage, pumpkins and pinecones, an autumn season wedding was a no-brainer. When she and Eddie were searching for venues and discovered Banner Elk Winery’s natural elegance, they both knew they had found the perfect location to tie the knot and celebrate. Lisette peppered the wedding with creative DIY elements such as jars filled with delicious jams as a thank you to their guests; lining the ceremony aisle with seasonal pumpkins; and even marking the reception tables with chalkboards listing assorted varietal grape names. The result was a festive fall wedding, full of meaning and enjoyed by all. Their talented photographer, Ellen Gwin notably commented, “Working a lot of weddings, I have seen it all, but this was one of those particularly great ones that you don’t even want to leave when it is over. You feel like you have made new friends for life!”

hen we think about a High Country wedding, there are so many wonderful venues and lovely vendors to make all the pieces and elements of the day fall into place. But with so many couples making this little niche of the Blue Ridge Mountains a getaway or a destination wedding locale, often parts of the weddings are outsourced vendors from off the mountain. It’s truly a special feté when you find a bride and groom who literally use every vendor from within the High Country. Kristie and Trey are that couple. A native of Lewisville, NC, Kristie looked to Boone as her point of reference for all other wedding needs. Her gown came from Did Someone Say party? and Trey’s tux from South’s Clothiers. Stick Boy Bread Co. provided a decadent bird-embellished cake and Marie of Hair Craft provided fabulous hair and makeup. Even the entertainment boasted of Boone’s very own Digital DJs. The day floated by in confidence and without a hitch - except their own - thanks in part to the amazing local vendors who were entrusted with Trey and Kristie’s special day. For more information on these vendors and other highly acclaimed local vendors, turn to page 107.

There are more than 100 farms in an around the High Country. Several years ago, only a handful of people, most of them farmers, cared about that. Times have changed, and the concept of getting closer to our food has surpassed trend status and is gradually becoming the norm, even making its way into the wedding industry. Visit a local farmers’ market or step into a local grocery, and it’s clear that the move from mass-produced food to fare provided by local farmers has taken over.

Include local wines or brew in your menu from BANNER ELK WINERY, BLOWING ROCK ALE HOUSE, GRANDFATHER WINERY & VINEYARDS, LINVILLE FALLS WINERY, PRODUCE AND PROVISIONS, RAFFALDINI OR ROARING RIVER VINEYARDS.

Below is a list of our favorite local caterers who can create the perfect farm-to-plate event:

Eat Crow Frugal Gourmet Gadabouts Henry’s Good Food New Public House Reid’s Catering

What’s a North Carolina wedding without classic barbecue? LEATHERWOOD MOUNTAINS provides whole hog-pit cooked barbecue, or roasted salt & pepper chicken halves from locally grown hogs and chickens. High Country landmarks, BANDANA’S and WOODLAND’S, are also great options for barbecue catering.
